Carmelo Anthony Becomes No.9 All-Time Leading Scorer in NBA History, Passes Moses Malone
In the Los Angeles Lakers’ 121-118 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday, Carmelo Anthony surpassed Moses Malone for No. 9 on the NBA All-Time scoring list.
Melo saying the best part about his accomplishment is the level of play he’s continued to sustain going into year 19.
“I’m still here doing it,” Anthony said, per ABC News. “I think that’s what I’m honestly excited about. I’m here in Year 19 still doing what I’m able to do. Still passionate about the game. Still passionate about coming to work every day and getting better. And what a better night to reach ninth than with a win, the way that we needed a win tonight.
Melo entered the night only needing 15 points to surpass Malone’s 27,409 career points. He scored 18 of his team-high 28 points in the second-half of the game, and then continued to pour it in from deep, shooting 6-for-8 from three while making a pair of free throws with 1.9 seconds remaining to help solidify the win.
At 37 years old, Anthony is averaging 17.7 ppg so far this season.
He ignited Staples Center with back-to-back threes in a 48-second span, flipping a two-point deficit into a two-point lead late in the fourth. Anthony continued to pour it in from deep, shooting 6-for-8 from three on the night while icing the game with a pair of two free throws to put the Lakers up with 1.9 seconds remaining.
After the game, the team presented Melo with the game ball.
“They wanted me to give a speech, but I was too tired,” he said per ESPN.
After netting their first win of the season, the Lakers turn their attention to a Tuesday night matchup against the San Antonio Spurs.
