Major League legend Alex Rodriguez is now officially involved in the world of professional basketball.
On Tuesday, the NBA Board of Governors approved Rodriguez and Marc Lore as limited partners for both the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Rodriguez, a three-time MVP and 14-time All-Star in the MLB, and Lore’s ownership group now owns 20 percent of the Timberwolves and Lynx, which is just the first step in the group’s path to total ownership. In 2022, the group will have the opportunity to purchase an additional 20 percent and can become majority owners by 2023 (when they can purchase another 20 percent of the franchise).
Rumors have been active that Rodriguez’s intention with the T’Wolves is to move the team to Seattle, where he spent the first few seasons of his MLB career. However, for now, those remain only rumors.
The current owner of Minnesota’s professional basketball franchise, 80-year-old Glen Taylor, will remain with the franchise for the time being.
The Timberwolves have had a rough go of it over the past few years, with only one playoff appearance since 2005 despite having a respectable assortment of high-end talent. In 2020-21, Minnesota finished 23-49 and 13th in the Western Conference after going 19-45 in the previous season.
