Ja Morant’s ascent from Murray State to the NBA has both captivated and inspired basketball fans around the world. Yet, before he was named the 2020 NBA Rookie of the Year or leading the Memphis Grizzlies to the NBA Playoffs this year for the first time since the 2016-17 season, Morant was just a small-town kid growing up in South Carolina, playing on a concrete court built in his backyard. And it was on that court that his basketball journey began.
Morant’s story is captured in the six-part docu-series, PROMISELAND, which is set to air June 3 on Crackle. Directed by Dexton Deboree (Unbanned: The Legend of AJ1), the film will tell the “coming of age story” of Morant’s upbringing down South and his eventual rise to NBA stardom.
As told through Ja’s perspective, viewers will also get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how he navigated his rookie season and grappled with the reality that both the world and the 2019-20 NBA campaign were forced to come to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The series also features exclusive interviews with those around the game, including NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony, WNBA All-Star and MVP A’ja Wilson, and Morant’s teammates Jaren Jackson Jr. and Brandon Clarke. Both his father, Tee and his mother Jamie also make an appearance, as well as rapper Moneybagg Yo.
