New York Knicks: Offseason Summary 2020

Despite being in one of the NBA’s most illustrious markets, the New York Knicks have earned the unsavory reputation of being the league’s worst-ran franchise. After making sweeping changes in the front office and coaching, and drafting within the lottery for three consecutive years, the Knicks are looking to change that.

Having one of their more quiet offseasons in the last few years may actually be a good thing, as the franchise has been known to make desperation signings.

Biggest Acquisitions

  • Obi Toppin: Considered to be one of the most NBA-ready prospects in the 2020 NBA Draft, Obi Toppin will join Kevin Knox and R.J. Barrett as the team’s most recent lottery picks and hopeful franchise cornerstones. Highly athletic, with a high basketball IQ and a well-rounded offensive game, look for Toppin to be a highlight machine in the Big Apple.
  • Austin Rivers: The Knicks have long been looking for a point guard but with high-profile floor generals linked to New York — as usual — it was surprising to see that Austin Rivers had reached an agreement with them. A steadily developing player throughout his NBA career, Rivers is a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none type of contributor that should fit well within their starting lineup.

Biggest Losses

  • Bobby Portis: Bobby Portis has had better seasons than his 2019-20 campaign with the New York Knicks, as he found his shot attempts and rebounding opportunities. Still, he’s a big man that can make a Montrezl Harrell-level impact.
  • Taj Gibson: A grizzled veteran who plays with toughness and a mean streak on defense, Taj Gibson is surprisingly still available; maybe the Knicks bring him back if they’re unsure that 33-year-old Wayne Ellington could replace his experience.
