Celtics-Heat Release Statement Before Game Following Ruling in Kenosha and Protests at U.S. Capitol
In response to the ruling by Kenosha District Attorney, Michael Graveley, that the officers involved in the shooting of Jacob Blake will not be charged, as well as the protests at the U.S. Capitol building by Trump supporters on Wednesday, the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat have released a joint statement before tonight’s game:
“2021 is a new year, but some things have not changed. We play tonight’s game with a heavy heart after yesterday’s decision in Kenosha, and knowing that protesters in our nation’s capital are treated differently by political leaders depending on what side of certain issues they are on. The drastic difference between the way protesters this past spring and summer were treated and the encouragement given to today’s protestors who acted illegally just shows how much work we have to do.”
They added: “We have decided to play tonight’s game to try and bring joy into people’s lives. But we must not forget the injustices in our society, and we will continue to use our voices and our platform to highlight these issues and do everything we can to work for a more equal and just America. #BLACKLIVESSTILLMATTER”
The Celtics walked off the court prior to the game, and then, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, held a 45-minute players-only meeting in the locker room.
After returning to the court, players on both the Celtics and Heat took a knee for the national anthem.
