Michigan Lands Commitment from Elite 2016 SG Tyus Battle

With recruiting for the Class of 2015 in the rearview mirror (except for Thon Maker or Jamal Murray, who may or may not reclassify), college coaches have begun chasing after the Class of 2016 in full force. And Michigan has emerged among the early winners after receiving a verbal commitment from five-star junior shooting guard Tyus Battle via Twitter.

More from the Detroit Free Press:

Michigan basketball missed out on Jaylen Brown for 2015 but not Tyus Battle for 2016.

The five-star shooting guard, ranked the No. 14 player nationally on rivals.com for the class of 2016, announced on Twitter that he’s “going to be a Wolverine.” His father, Gary Battle, also confirmed to scout.com that Battle has committed to U-M.

The 6-foot-5, 180-pound guard out of Gill St. Bernard’s School in Gladstone, N.J., gives the Wolverines an elite commitment for the 2016 class shortly after they missed out on Brown, the No. 3 overall player for the class of 2015, who committed to California.

“John Beilein likes big wings that can shoot,” tweeted Evan Daniels, scout.com director of basketball recruiting. “Tyus Battle fits that description. High-level shot maker. Michigan beat heavy hitters for him.”

Battle chose Michigan over the likes of Duke, Louisville, Kentucky and Syracuse. He reportedly visited U-M last week and had visited Duke and Louisville as well.

“He loved Michigan and schools like Duke and Syracuse and Connecticut from the start,” Gary Battle told scout.com. “When he went to the official visit to Michigan, it just confirmed it for him. I could tell when he was there, because he had a big smile on his face the whole time.”
