Illinois’ Rayvonte Rice Out Indefinitely With Broken Hand

One of the best scorers in college basketball is sidelined for the foreseeable future with a broken hand. Illinois guard Rayvonte Rice hurt his left hand during practice on Monday, according to Gary Parrish of CBS Sports. Rice—who leads the squad in scoring (17.2 points per game) and rebounding (6.9 rebounds per game)—is expected to miss up to six weeks.

From CBS Sports:

Illinois star Rayvonte Rice suffered a broken left hand in Monday’s practice, a source told CBSSports.com on Tuesday morning.

Illinois coach John Groce subsequently confirmed the news.

Rice will have surgery Wednesday. And though Groce declined to speculate how long Rice might be sidelined, a source told CBSSports.com that four-to-six weeks is a fair estimate.

Rice began his college career at Drake and is averaging 17.2 points and 6.9 rebounds for the Illini this season. The 6-foot-4 guard scored 20 points in Saturday’s loss to Ohio State. He had a season-high 29 points in a loss to Oregon last month.
