You might remember the Foot Locker commercial in February that featured Stephen Curry in a 3-point contest with four secret challengers. Among them was 5th grader Jaden Newman, a sharp-shooter who has been playing with her HS varsity squad in Florida since the third grade. She went on to beat Curry in the contest and the video went viral in the aftermath. Now, she’s back making headlines, this time after reportedly dropping 57 points in the home opener on Tuesday night. And, yeah, she’s only 10 years old.
Back in February, Steph Curry took on some of the best and most clutch 3-point shooters of all-time and only one person was able to beat him in a shootout: not 3-pt champ Tim Legler, not Big Shot Rob, not his father. The winning competitor was a 10 year old girl named Jaden Newman. Luck right? Jaden was allowed to shoot from a closer line but she’s a legit lethal shooter. She’s been playing on the varsity girls team at her school since she was in the 3rd grade and averaged 30.5 points & 9.2 assists per game last season.
At all-star weekend I asked Steph when were they going to have a rematch and he laughed and said “anytime, because I haven’t heard the end of this since that video.”
Although she’s still about 8 years away from being eligible to play in the NBA – her goal is to become the 1st woman in the NBA – she looks ready for that rematch. In the home opener on Tuesday night, Newman dropped 57 points!
If you aren’t familiar with the Newman family, her older brother – 13 year old Julian – has some serious skills too. Earler in the year he became the youngest player to ever score 1,000 points in high school.
