The crowds may have thinned out a bit by the final day of the Reebok Classic Breakout at Philadelphia University, but that didn’t slow down the action on the court.
As teams got more familiar with each other during the course of the several days together, play became sharper and cleaner. With one final day to show off in front of the host of college coaches and recruiters on hand, several tried to make as loud of an exit as possible, especially with Florida coach Billy Donovan roaming the gym. One of those was Breein Tyree, a 6-2 point guard from St. Joseph’s in Metuchen, NJ. While most of the campers were rising seniors, Tyree is a rising junior, and rise he did. In his final game of camp, Tyree took the ball to the rim and tried to turn every drive into a YouTube-worthy clip, showing off serious hops.
The camp’s All-Star Game brought out some of the top performers in camp. While the squads turned pregame warmups into an impromptu dunk contest, Philadelphia’s own Derrick Jones (Archbishop John Carroll, 2015) carried it into the game. The 6-7 swingman, who told SLAM he’s registered interest from top programs like Kentucky and Kansas, put on a show for the crowd, throwing down on, over and around everyone else on the floor.
Just like in most All-Star outings, players were almost too eager to share the ball in the early going, seeking out alley-oops to make their teammates look good. But as the game wore on, the intensity picked up, with Entertainers Basketball Classic’s Hannibal on the microphone calling the action. Donovan Mitchell (Brewster Academy, NY, 2015), Corey Sanders (IMG Academy, FL, 2015) and Kendall Small (Mayfair, CA, 2015) flashed their point guard skills, but it was Small who helped pull the Classic team ahead in the final minutes, with Mustapha Heron (Sacred Heart, CT, 2016), who has verbally committed to Pittsburgh, breaking a late tie to secure the win.
