St. Vincent-St. Mary high school ballers will now play in the LeBron James Arena in Akron, the King’s hometown. After using James’ donation last year to renovate the gym, the school officially unveiled the new gymnasium this past Saturday. More details from the LeBron James Family Foundation:
“On the day of St. Vincent – St. Mary’s first men’s home basketball game of the season, the LeBron James Arena in Akron, Ohio officially opened its doors with a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony. Last year, James pledged $1 million to completely renovate his alma mater’s gym, which was gutted and rebuilt to include new hardwood flooring, bleachers, branded scoreboards, lighting, and all new sports equipment. The renovation also includes brand new locker room facilities for both men and women student athletes.
‘The days I spent in that gym playing basketball were some of the best times of my life, and I want the current St. VM students to have an equally amazing experience during their time there,’ said LeBron James. ‘The people at St. VM helped me grow both as a person and as a basketball player, so this is my way of thanking them and helping future generations of Irish athletes also be proud of where they came from.’
In addition to basketball, the gym will also be used for volleyball, wrestling, school assemblies, and various school events.”
