Klay Thompson Suffered a Concussion from Trevor Ariza’s Knee-to-the-Head

Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson was inadvertently kneed in the dome Wednesday night by Houston Rockets swingman Trevor Ariza in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals.

The blow knocked Thompson out of the Dubs’ 104-90 clinching victory in the fourth quarter, and the All-Star required eight stitches to close the wound.

Thompson, who scored 20 points in the victory, unsurprisingly suffered from concussion-like symptoms after going down.

Per the Contra Costa Times:

Thompson left the game in the fourth quarter of the Warriors’ 104-90 win after being kneed in the head by the Rockets’ Trevor Ariza and received stitches for an ear laceration, according to coach Steve Kerr. The team later announced he had been put through a concussion evaluation during the game and began not to feel well after the game.

Thompson was kneed with 9:31 left after Ariza left his feet only to catch the side of the head on the way down to the ground. Thompson stayed down on the court before returning to the locker room. He was available to return to the game, according to the Warriors at the time, but did not do so. […] “He is a good shooter, so you don’t want to give him any open 3-pointers,” Ariza said. “I was just trying to run and contest it. He happened to be leaning forward, and my knee hit him in the face.”

The Warriors will have seven days off before Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Oracle Arena on June 4.
