The last time Duke lost was to Maryland back on March 3rd of last season, and in the first meeting between the two teams since then, the Blue Devils got a little payback with a 71-64 victory.
With last game’s hero Greivis Vasquez watching from the stands, the Blue Devils got another great effort from its two stars, Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith. The two seniors combined for 43 points and once again played 40 minutes apiece.
Even though few would argue who was better between these two schools, last year’s loss had Duke as hungry as ever for a victory.
From The Durham Herald-Sun:
“We know that’s the last team to beat us, and we want to get them back,” Duke sophomore guard Andre Dawkins said.
The victory over Maryland now has Duke just seven wins shy of the school record for consecutive wins, set during the ’98-99 season. If it continues its undefeated start, the Blue Devils will break that mark on Feb. 5 against North Carolina State.
