Brooklyn Basketball Tournament Aims To Encourage Voter Registration For 2016 Election
When you live in a fast-paced, kaleidoscopic metropolis like New York City, people rarely take it upon themselves to better their community, assuming a city official will take care of it. However, being from a neighborhood that NYC historically and currently neglects opens opportunities for people to step up and make their area a better place.
In Brownsville, Brooklyn, on September 26th from 6 PM-9 PM, and the 27th from 11 AM-3 PM at the Thelma Hamilton Campus, venerable residents Ulyses Moran (Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.) and Earl James (Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.) are bringing their respective fraternities together for a voter’s registration drive basketball tournament in hopes of encouraging people to register to vote.
“It is time to uplift and unite our community. We have the greatest gift in the world being able to pick our leader, so we must encourage the youth to be educated in their choices,” said Ulyses Moran, the hulking former European league basketball player and current youth mentor.
Joining the two fraternities will be four other teams, the Brooklyn Democracy Academy men’s basketball team led by seniors Jahrell Thomas and Damark Mitchell, a team of NYC legends including Gordon Malone and James “Speedy” Williams, and two additional fraternities, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Brooklyn assemblywoman Latrice Walker will be the keynote speaker and looks forward to explaining the importance of voting in such a pivotal election. Local townsfolk are encouraged to come by and fill out voter’s registration forms while they watch electric NYC hoops action, halftime entertainment and enjoy provided refreshments.
