Team USA Defeats Serbia 96-66, Win Gold at 2016 Olympics

Team USA got off to a shaky start in its Gold medal game against Serbia, but Kevin Durant made sure that Coach K wouldn’t have to sweat it out. Following a sloppy first quarter that ended with the USA holding a four-point lead, Durant exploded in the second half to give the United States a 52-29 lead.

The dominant second quarter carried over into the second half as Team USA completely manhandled Serbia. The Red, White and Blue stretched the lead to 36 after three, making the fourth quarter a mere formality.

Kevin Durant led all scorers with 30. With seven rebounds, Carmelo Anthony became the all-time leader in rebounding at the Olympics. He is now the all-time Olympics leader in games, points, rebounds and Gold medals. After the game an emotional Carmelo announced his retirement from Olympic play.

“We fought. It wasn’t always pretty,” Melo told NBCSports during his post game television interview. “We came together July 17 and we all committed for this one reason. It was a special moment for me. This is the end, this is it for me.”

The game also marked Coach K’s last as head coach of Team USA. Gregg Popovich will now take over the reins.
