Boston Celtics star point guard Rajon Rondo’s future has been a hot-button issue of late, and while he says that staying in Beantown is his preference, Rondo admits that going through free agency (in the summer of 2015) is something he wouldn’t mind experiencing. Per the Boston Herald:
“It is (intriguing),” he said. “I haven’t thought about it. I’ve just thought about getting my leg as strong as possible next summer. It’s kind of like college recruiting, but a lot more money is spent. I’ve heard stories of guys getting calls right at midnight (on July 1 when contracts expire). It’s something I haven’t experienced and may want to go through, but I haven’t thought about it.”
Rondo’s curiosity doesn’t come as a surprise to Celtics types, whose extension proposal was recently turned down by the guard. They may have expected the rejection, but not because he plans to leave. Rondo has already said that he would like to remain a Celtic — a statement wholly dependent on what the market eventually bears.
There’s little doubt in the minds of Celtics management, or elsewhere, that Rondo has a max contract in his future if he returns to previous form.
