NYC Legendary Head Coach Jack Curran Dies at Age 82

Known for having the most combined wins in the country as a basketball and baseball high school coach, legendary Archbishop Molloy head coach Jack Curran passed away this morning at the age of 82 after coaching at the school for an impressive 55 years. Among the NBA players he coached at the school are Kenny Smith, Kenny Anderson, Kevin Joyce, Brian Winters and Robert Werdann. Standout Louisville point guard Russ Smith, who is in New York tonight for the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden, was also one of Curran’s student-athletes at Molloy. We can expect the Brooklyn native to have a chip on his shoulder tonight when he goes up against Villanova. From the NY Daily News: “Jack Curran, the legendary baseball and boys basketball coach at Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens, has died, the school’s athletic director confirmed to the Daily News Thursday morning. Curran – who won more basketball and baseball games combined than any other high school coach in the country – was 82. Mike McCleary, Molloy’s athletic director, confirmed Curran’s death after reports began circulating early Thursday morning on social media websites. McCleary had filled in for Curran over the final three weeks of the basketball season after Curran broke his right kneecap in a fall outside of his home last month. He had also been undergoing regular dialysis treatments and was recovering from cancer.”
