As expected, Mike Woodson is now on Mike D’Antoni’s coaching staff in New York. The Knicks will make the hire official later on today. Reports the NY Post: “The Knicks have hired Mike Woodson as Mike D’Antoni’s defensive assistant and are expected to announce the move later today, according to a person familiar with the situation…Woodson, who coached Atlanta from 2004 to 2010, was a key assistant on Larry Brown’s staff during the Pistons’ 2003-2004 NBA championship run. Woodson, a former Knicks first-round pick, is regarded as having good defensive principles, having learned at the lap of Brown and Bobby Knight at Indiana. Woodson played for Red Holzman in 1980-81. ‘I’m interested,’ Woodson told The Post on Aug. 9. ‘It’s where my NBA career started. I’d like to help Mike and see things continue to grow there.’ D’Antoni has long opposed hiring a defensive assistant when it was first suggested in Phoenix but Knicks management convinced him after the Knicks struggled on the defensive end the past three years.”
