Back in the day, the Capital Classic was the premier All-American boys basketball game in the country. This sunday, Under Armour is presenting the 35th annual Capital Classic on the campus of the University of Maryland. With rich history and a mighty healthy line-up of good prospects set to square-off, this year’s Capital Classic should prove to be pretty good.
Personally, I love these All-American games because they present the chance for players to earn reputations against other kids who are considered the best players in their respective areas. One of my favorite examples of this happened in 1989’s Capital Classic, when a point guard named Curt “Trouble” Smith outshined Kenny Anderson, who some considered the best high school basketball player ever, pre-Lebron. It’s also exciting because over 125 former participants have gone on to the NBA and there should be a few from this years line-up that will do the same.
This year, Danny Hurley (Son of Legendary high school coach Bob Hurley Sr.) of St. Benedicts Prep will coach the team of US All-Stars and Joe Wootten (son of Hall of Fame Coach Morgan Wootten) will lead the Capital All-Stars. Additionally, tomorrow afternoon, the players will participate in the SLAM Magazine dunk contest (that’s right, we are partners in the weekend) at Bishop O’Connell High School in Alexandria, VA.
