Pat Riley’s well-deserved induction into the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame was the lone bright spot in an otherwise nightmarish season. And the induction might be Riley’s calling card to step away from coaching the game.
Ever since the enshrinment, Pat Riley has been sounding like a man ready to leave the bench for good.
”When you come to a fork in the road, you take it,” Riley said after Monday’s news conference. “I don’t know what it’s like. But I think shortly, I’ll find out.”
Riley told WQAM (560) on Wednesday morning that he would ”make the decision quickly, right after the season,”
No one would blame Riley if he retired at this time; the man certainly has nothing left to prove as a coach, and he has earned a break after 40 years or so on the bench.
He won’t completely go away, though. It is believed that he’ll continue to lord over the Miami Heat organization as team president.
