Mark Cuban Is Part of the Starbury Fan Club

by Marcel Mutoni

Prior to his Mavs ending their ugly five-game skid against a resilient Knick team in overtime last night, Mark Cuban made sure to greet Stephon Marbury (who, as per usual, did not take part in the night’s festivities.) Afterwards, Cuban professed his appreciation of the exiled guard.

From Newsday:

“I’m a Stephon Marbury fan,” Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said.

“We have an organization that we think we’ve put in place that we think has baby-sitting skills,” he said. “And that’s not a reference to any specific player. But different ages, different maturity levels, different skill sets - you’ve got to put the organization around them and hopefully, it puts them in a position to succeed. Some guys are higher-profile than others, and unless we think it’s going to be a negative, we’re willing to take a chance.”

Well, isn’t that simply wonderful? Cubes thinks his players are babies that need to be watched over until their parents come and pick them up after work.

When asked if teams around the L would be interested in Marbury if/when the Knicks buy him out, Cuban said “absolutely”. Ten games into an already quite frustrating season for the Mavs, is the owner ready to shake things up that much? Unlikely, but with Cuban, you just never know.

first! dang does the Mavs suck or wad?!

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.17 at 10:40 am
They should play Starbury at center. He can’t be worse than Dampier.

  • mike Posted: Nov.17 at 10:47 am
I just want Steph to go to start on a contending team that plays on nationak TV all the time.

  • JackBrown Posted: Nov.17 at 11:01 am
Exactly what would Marbury have to do to lose all support?

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.17 at 11:01 am
just what the Mavs need, another old guard who’s golden days are far behind him. Was JKidd not enough?

  • Justin Walsh Posted: Nov.17 at 11:05 am
haha babysitting. the nba is one big game of backyard basketball to him

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.17 at 11:13 am

Dallas was the last team to gamble on Rodman so this doesn’t surprise me. If they get Starbury it will remind me of an old school classic Yo MTV Raps music video titled: SELF DESTRUCTION!

  • Mo Charlo Posted: Nov.17 at 11:39 am
Cubes is going to by the Cubs and get Starbury to play shortstop.

  • Breeze Posted: Nov.17 at 11:48 am
well with all the money cuban has..i dont see why hes not clearing ship and buying one of the decorated free agents next year…marbury and j terry will fight less than 5 mintes…and devin george hates him personally..i wonder do dampeir still thinks hes the best center in the league

  • riggs Posted: Nov.17 at 12:01 pm
marbury isnt even a bad player, sure hes a lil rough but he’s nowhere near a bust yall are making him out to be, the problem is his mindset and HOW he plays now, he needs to change that ish (and i think he will if he gets the eff out of NY)

  • Trap Star Posted: Nov.17 at 12:06 pm
i think he is an great pick up for alot of teams.. i think if he was at Toronto he can help out the calderon problem even make a strong 1-2 punch for the raps at the guard with starbury commin of the bench

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.17 at 12:10 pm
Would Cubes make a trade for Marbury, or would he just claim him on waivers?
I can’t see Cuban trading Jason Kidd straight up for Marbury, but I could be wrong. Kidd in New York would be outstanding.

  • akimana Posted: Nov.17 at 12:12 pm
Cubes was charged with insider trading!

Since Cubes is making the All-Star game happen in what will be the greatest sporting facility on the planet he’s getting closer to coming off my “people to kick in the nuts” list. If he traded JKidd for Marbury I would offically become a Mark Cuban fan. Not because it would make the Mavs better but just because of the entertainment value of Steph in Dallas and Jason in New York. Make it happen Cubes!

  • Breeze Posted: Nov.17 at 12:47 pm
i agre blong he more doing things on his own impulsive..like as real recreation just because he can and not for the team and the fans…

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.17 at 12:55 pm
Allenp: -HOW- could you see that? I get it that the Mavs function better as a set of guys going one-on-one and drawing openings (instead of focusing their offense through one guy), but Marbury?

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.17 at 12:57 pm
11 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds, 2.7 steals, 48% shooting and nearly 40% from the three point line, ALL in 36 minutes of play. +22 efficiency rate. Who is that? Why, that would be Jason Kidd. Say what you want about how Dallas is doing, Kidd is balling way above the credit he gets.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Nov.17 at 1:14 pm
    Insider trading.

  • Joel O's Posted: Nov.17 at 1:23 pm
Well, why not? He brought over Nick Van Exel back when everyone had all but given up on him, and he was a heck of a sixth man for Mavs back then.

  • [...] Suddenly, the Mavs’ problems on the court (and the Starbury flirtation) don’t seem like such a big concern now. var staf_confirmtext = ‘Mail sent’ #stafBlock { position: absolute !important; z-index: 100000; display: none; width: 200px; } #stafForm { background-color:#f60; border: 2px solid #000; padding: 5px; margin:0; } #stafForm h2 { margin:0 0 4px;color:#fff;font-size:12px !important;} #stafForm input,label, h2 {font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px; color: #222222; } #stafForm .input_text { width: 90px;margin-bottom: 5px;padding:2px; } #stafForm label { float: left; display: block; width: 75px; line-height: 16px; } #stafForm .input_submit {color:#fff;padding:0 5px;} #stafClose { float: right; margin-right: 5px; } x [...]

Cubes likes attention and controversy. Let’s revisit this when Steph is actually released.

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.17 at 2:45 pm
I wonder if Josh Howard and Pacman Jones share the same babysitter.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Nov.17 at 3:03 pm
Also, I’m going to go out on a limb and say Cuban sells the Mavericks to Vladimir Putin before he trades Kidd for Marbury.

  • the baconator Posted: Nov.17 at 3:05 pm
Funny he should say that, cuz I remember hearing that no one wanted Starbury. It’s sad really, cuz on paper he’s a great player: great points, decent assists, etc. But Marbury’s such a headcase, it’s like he’s intentionally trying to make himself untradeable, like he wants the Knicks to want to kill him.

  • Moose Posted: Nov.17 at 4:29 pm
baconator, he also is a terrible team player.

  • The Promise Posted: Nov.17 at 4:35 pm
I just hate how the guy’s career is going down the tubes as he plays for a doormat team. I hope he does go to Dallas. Hes an upgraded from Jason Terry, thats for sure. Nothing against Jterry, its just he aint as good as Starbury, plain and simple.

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.17 at 4:41 pm
    Jukai
I said I couldn’t see Cubes trading Kidd for Marbury. Maybe putting Marbury and Kidd together in the backcourt might work, but I don’t see a straight up trade being good for the Mavs.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.17 at 5:12 pm
Damn Allenp, my bad once again. I keep reading yer posts wrong, I guess my brain just can’t register that we agree on certain things.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Nov.17 at 5:43 pm
The Mavs are better than their record, the way I see it. They won’t be under .500 for long. I’m not sure what team Steph needs to go to, but I’m pretty sure Dallas isn’t it. Miami would work. Maybe, uh…I have no idea. Who else is a long shot for the playoffs and needs a point guard who will dominate the ball? There’s no way he goes to a lock playoff team—the risk is too great.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Nov.17 at 5:45 pm
Addding Steph to a stable team would be like dropping pure sodium into water.

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.17 at 5:56 pm
@Russ:What on God’s Gerald Green Earth would make you think that the Mavs are better than their record? They’re struggling against mediocre East teams had to go to overtime just to beat the KNICKS!

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Nov.17 at 6:00 pm
The Knicks have been shooting the lights out lately, they’re not exactly mediocre at the moment. (I don’t think they’ll make the playoffs, but they’re on a frickin’ roll right now.) With Kidd and Nowitzki as their best players and Green playing quite well, I think the Mavs will be back above .500 before long. You really think they’re gonna maintain this pace all season and go 27-55?

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.17 at 6:16 pm
What about the Magic? I don’t think they’ll go 27-55 but your dreaming if you think this team is winning 50 games this year.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.17 at 6:17 pm
I think Dallas makes it into the playoffs before San Antonio does.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Nov.17 at 6:19 pm
I didn’t say the Mavs would win 50. But as of right now they’re on pace to win 27 games, and I think they’re better than that. As for the Magic…maybe? Although Steph’s propensity to dominate the ball would take away from Hedo and Rashard, I think.

  • ab_40 Posted: Nov.17 at 6:26 pm
yeah let’s add another undersized overpaid 2 guard who can’t guard his own shadow and screws up the already not so great chemistry on this team… whatever happened to the NYC point guard? they’re coming from spain now?

  • ClydeSays Posted: Nov.18 at 12:05 am
Uh, I think Carlisle’s already got his hands full trying to keep JKidd’s corpse animated, restoring Dirk’s ego after the DWest b!tchslap and keeping JHoward away from the weed. Throwing Marbury into the mix right now would be a move worthy of… um …Isiah.

  • Dacre Posted: Nov.18 at 12:30 am
At this rate I would take Marbury in a dalmav uni…it would be the second coming of NICK VAN EXEL!!! (WHERE IS HE THESE DAYS ANYWAY??????)

  • jaywhy Posted: Nov.18 at 6:06 am
the national anthem? i dont give a dang, im black!
