Fantasy Basketball, Week 4

Lots of new production after the Knicks Fire Sale.

Jamal the Warriorby Emry DowningHall

First off, I apologize for the delayed release of the fantasy column this week. Thanksgiving is almost upon us, and you know how the holiday seasons go. My schedule has been as foolish as one of Don Nelson’s rotations.

The Knicks jumped out to a quick start this season, climbing above .500 for the first time in what seemed like a decade. The sudden high-energy team was paced by the outstanding play of Zach Randolph and the sharp shooting of Jamal Crawford.

With Donnie Walsh’s native New York eyes fixed on the free agent summer of 2010, the Knicks turned around and dealt both Randolph and Crawford this past Friday in separate deals.

Though the move was clearly a box-out for position in arguably the best free-agent crop of all time, its fantasy implications will be felt immediately. Here we go:

The New York Knicks — Tim Thomas and Cuttino Mobley were previously only useful in abysmally plain fantasy leagues, but now should be on everyone’s radar.

Cuttino Mobley’s situation is complicated by the rumors that he failed his physical due to a heart condition [Insert Eddy Curry reference here]. If you are already holding Mobley, wait and see how this develops because he can hit the deep three and will see a lot of tick in D’Antoni’s system. Assuming, of course, he is actually medically cleared to participate.

Tim Thomas flourished in Phoenix for half a season under D’Antoni and should be an intricate part of the rotation for the undermanned Knicks. In his first game he scored 16 points, grabbed six rebounds and added four assists. Thomas’ value is always difficult to judge, but if he’s motivated to perform (read: needs a new contract), he will be an excellent addition in deeper leagues.

Al Harrington is Donnie Walsh’s mans and them, and he has the versatility to excel in an up-tempo situation. He should get plenty of minutes in New York, and I expect his value to be above what it was in Golden State, based mainly on the opportunity to get his in the Garden. Obviously, if he was dropped by an impatient owner, snatch him up immediately and look to buy low right away. It will take him a while to get acclimated to a new system, and shake off the rust from sitting out, but he is going to produce.

Jamal Crawford — He’s expected to run the point in Golden State which will benefit his assist totals. It’s always a dice game with Don Nelson’s rotations, but hopefully Crawford finds a niche as one of “Nellie’s Guys” and flourishes in his role. I think his scoring will dip a bit, but his field goal percentage and assist totals will increase. The plot thickens when Monta Ellis returns, but for now Crawford should continue to produce for fantasy owners.

Zach Randolph — I’m still confused why a team that already had Marcus Camby and Chris Kaveman would make this move, but that’s par for the course for the Clippers. You have to wonder where Randolph’s minutes will come from, but at the same time, why make the move if you’re not going to give a player that clearly needs a lot of shots the minutes to produce? There’s no doubt Baron Davis has the ability to get Z-Bo the ball where he likes it, but I still expect his numbers to dip in L.A. If you’re still able to sell high on Randolph, now would be an excellent time to do so.

Manu Ginobili made his season debut with the Spurs much earlier than anticipated, scoring 11 points in 12 minutes Monday night. The original prognosis on his ankle had him out much longer, and that’s great news for anyone who drafted Manu in the mid-rounds. There’s no reason to go into what he brings to the court, because the man is a stud, but guys like George Mason and Michael Finley could see a drop in production but maintain their value at least until Tony Parker returns to the lineup.

Even during the holidays, the waiver wire never nods off. There’s a lot of action right now, and a lot of potential keepers floating around:

Andrea Bargnani — He’s in the starting lineup and is coming off his best week as a NBA player. He should no longer be available in any leagues and will provide points, rebounds, blocks and three balls to owners fortunate enough to have Rook's going to lead.snagged him (which could have been you, if you listened to my advice last week!).

D.J. Augustin — Here’s another guy who should be scooped up in 12-team leagues right away. He’s starting, and Larry Brown is bullish on the rookie. There are also trade rumors speculating that Jason Richardson will get sent out of town, which would free up even more clock for Augustin. Even if that falls through, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Felton moved at some point this season. Augustin looks like the real deal and an excellent pickup.

Ramon Sessions — Luke Ridnour is once again banged up and Sessions is starting at the one-slot. If you need a point guard and Augustin isn’t available, Sessions is a nice addition.

Eric Gordon — Now that Mobley is out of town, Gordon will see increased playing time and shots. Don’t rush to pick him up, but if he has a good game, expect him to be added in a lot of leagues.

Brook Lopez — Josh Boone’s injury has extended his playing time, and he’s performed well enough to keep the starting job. The Nets are focused on the future and while both Boone and Lopez have talent, it makes more sense to give the starting job to Brook right away. Center is the rarest position in fantasy, and though Lopez will be inconsistent he’s worth an addition in most leagues.

An-Dre!Quentin Richardson — He’s had a solid year so far in New York, and the trades and injuries are going to open up a ton of playing time and a lot of headband patting. He’s always inconsistent but will get enough minutes to start and produce in most leagues.

Andray Blatche – Blatche exploded last night for 25 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks. The issue with Blatche has always been playing time and his comfort level under Eddie Jordan. This was the team’s first game playing for interim coach Ed Tapscott. A performance like that, even one game, warrants an addition in all leagues. Go get ’em!

D.J. Augustin is going to be a Top 5 assist guy in the League for many years. Since he’s starting, I think it’s still possible for him to lead al rookies is assists this season.

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Nov.26 at 1:12 pm
Ryne: Agreed. He looks like the real deal Holyfield. I think they make a deal soon to either get Felton or Rich. out of town so he can tick tick tick

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.26 at 1:14 pm

Andray Blatche In an eight team league, should I make any add/drop moves?

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.26 at 1:37 pm
Seeing Crawford in a Warriors jersey just looks right. If your a rookie pg getting burn and putting up numbers for a Larry Brown coached team, you’ve got a long, illustrious career ahead of you. Congrats, D.J.

  • nothin personal Posted: Nov.26 at 2:42 pm
I am a close third in my league, and I want to upgrade on Marc Gasol. I need some rebs (damn you Tyson Chandler), 3s and blocks, and I have already replaced Udrih with Augustin. I have Josh Smith, so I figure that Blocks will be Ok down the road. The Question is: Yi or Blatche? Blatche has C eligibility for yahoo, but I have 3 other Cs. I like Yi’s line, but I hate his instability. It all comes down to rebounds, because There are 5 teams within 50 rebs. What do you think?

  • nothin personal Posted: Nov.26 at 2:47 pm
Also, should I cut Rudy Fernandez, or should I wait a bit longer? Sisco Garcia was waived in my league and I like him with Kevin Martin out.

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Nov.26 at 3:16 pm
@Moose: You seem a bit light @ center but the only guy on that list that seems really drop worthy is Big Z - Nene Hilario is having a really solid season based off rankings… I think I would rather own him than Z.

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Nov.26 at 3:16 pm
@Moose: That’s assuming you need a Center, the best guy available is def. Manu.

  • Moose Posted: Nov.26 at 3:17 pm
Thanks, Emry. I have dropped Ilgauskas and picked up Nene. Thanks, man.

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Nov.26 at 3:19 pm
@Nothin Personal: I would rather own Blatche right now than Yi - Blatche may turn into a bust but, Yi is going to go downhill for sure when Boone gets healthy. I think he is a more stable solution for you. Rudy has been frustrating but Garcia hasn’t played yet… if you can patiently wait for his return, and he will be rusty even then, thats not a bad move.

  • nothin personal Posted: Nov.26 at 3:33 pm
Thnks Emry. I think I will wait till next game and I’ll take Blatche. I don’t trust stats vs the Warriors. I still worry about that 3 ball. though.

  • J-O Posted: Nov.26 at 3:42 pm
should i trade rudy gay for kevin durant?

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Nov.26 at 3:51 pm
@J-0: How is the scoring figured in your league?

  • J-O Posted: Nov.26 at 4:06 pm
    its H2H

  • what Posted: Nov.26 at 4:54 pm
I think you mean George Hill, not George Mason, unless the Spurs’ backup PG is making a surprise Final Four run. Good lookin’ out on Lopez and Augustin, I picked both up this week and they are both putting up big numbers.

  • what Posted: Nov.26 at 4:54 pm
    J-O, no.

  • Andrej Posted: Nov.26 at 5:03 pm

  • Moose Posted: Nov.26 at 5:14 pm
Jeez, Andrej, how’d you pull that one off? 6 team league?

  • Andrej Posted: Nov.26 at 5:36 pm
    10 team league

  • Andrej Posted: Nov.26 at 5:52 pm
and i just got billups cuz my friend was retarted and i convinced him that maggete is better then him

  • GOAT Posted: Nov.26 at 5:58 pm
I saw the question about Rudy above…..but still aren’t sure what to do with him in my league….it’s only 10 teams so there is some decent talent on the waiver wire…still, the guy drops bombs and steals (which are both tough cats to come by). Should I try to ship him out, or just drop and pickup?

  • GOAT Posted: Nov.26 at 6:03 pm
In that league I just mentioned, I need serious help in FG% and steals (which Rudy does both pretty well), and could also use some help with boards and assists…..I’m winning pretty much every other category though. Any players you think I should try to target as a trade for Rudy Fernandez? I like whats he’s given so far, but don’t see that continuing, now that Oden is back and Webster must be back soon too I’d imagine.

  • GOAT Posted: Nov.26 at 6:07 pm
some free agents that could help are:
Battier, Ariza, Farmar, G Hill, Mobley, Earl Watson, Marquis, Eric Gordon, Conley, Outlaw…..I’m leaning towards Gordon….whaddya think?

  • GOAT Posted: Nov.26 at 6:09 pm
Also, do we wait to see what Barbosa is capable of despite his tremendous loss? Or just cut him loose and move on?

  • GOAT Posted: Nov.26 at 6:15 pm
Didn’t see Augustin on the waiver wire until now, just dropped Rudy and picked up DJ….thanks for being there to listen as I thought (typed) out loud to myself.

  • Andrej Posted: Nov.26 at 7:12 pm
cut barbosa lose i did he was horrible so far this season i cudent part with him but i finally did and it was worth it you should do the same

  • Petter Posted: Nov.26 at 7:14 pm
GOAT: Marquis is the most productive of those players right now, but you don´t need the things he does best, so… Funny that you dropped Rudy for DJ, I did the same thing yesterday$ in my league… He just don´t get enough minutes and contribute to little!

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.26 at 9:22 pm
I’ve been hurting recently, thanks to the trades (Jamal has not been playing), blowouts (Lebron hasn’t been playing), injuries (T-Mac and Deng), and now I’m worried about Camby with Randolph heading over to Clipville. Times are tough!

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Nov.26 at 10:22 pm
@JO - I would hold onto Gay. Durant has the ability to break out but is still showing too much inconsistency this season. Truthfully though, both guys have been a bit disappointing.

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Nov.26 at 10:23 pm
@What - Good point about George Mason vs. George Hill - Both are underdogs though right? Lol. Glad the waiver guys worked out!

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Nov.26 at 10:27 pm
@Goat: I thought you were talking about Rudy Gay and almost had a heart attack. Rudy F. for DJ is a great add drop.

  • Ben Osborne Posted: Nov.26 at 10:30 pm
Emry: my team is currently named Hawesome. You are the man.

  • G-O Posted: Nov.26 at 10:49 pm
    Thanks for the help

  • G-O Posted: Nov.26 at 10:51 pm
Also should I be looking to trade al thorton now with zach coming in and his 20 avg?

  • Andrej Posted: Nov.27 at 12:56 am
    Chauncey Billups
    Dwyane Wade
    Andre Iguodala,
    Antawn Jamison,
    Amare Stoudemire
    Vince Carter,
    Gerald Wallace,
    Tracy McGrady
    Jermaine O’Neal,
    D.J. Augustin
    Monta Ellis*,
    Marvin Williams
Drew Gooden, my team and im losing 1-7 my team is playing horrible this week but i still have half of the week left im tryin to trade tmac beacuse hes really ingury prone im tryin to get amare and tmac for dwight and bargnani

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Nov.27 at 2:47 pm
@Ben: Cheers! Glad he worked out, I think he’s going to get better @ some point this season when the Kings either 1. Trade B. Miller and let him play the 5 35+ a game or 2. B. Miller goes down as he usually does with injury.

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Nov.27 at 2:49 pm
@GO: As always, it depends on the package. If you have someone who is high on him and can make something work, it wouldn’t be a bad idea but the truth is he’s still going to get tick @ the 3 b/c Kaman, Z-Bo,Camby can’t come close ot guarding a SF and the Clips want to develop Al anyway. So while I do expect some dropoff, I wouldn’t expect it to be staggering.

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Nov.27 at 2:53 pm
WAIVER NOTE: After Eric Gordons night, he should be added in all leagues. Scoop him up if he’s still available! I added him wherever I could.

  • Evan Yarbrough Posted: Nov.28 at 10:12 am
This is my team which is injury laden right now:
    Jason Terry
    Dwyane Wade
    Tony Parker
    Josh Howard
    Michael Beasley
    Carlos Boozer
    Lamar Odom
    Andrew Bogut
    Tim Duncan
    Kevin Durant
    Al Horford
    Luol Deng
    Derrick Rose
    Tracy McGrady Available
    Augustin
    Ginobili
    Kenyon Martin
    Nene Hilario
    any ideas??

  • ti-sizz Posted: Nov.29 at 10:55 am
    Hey emry,
Do you think it is worth it switching lamar odom for kirilenko?
And also, what do you think of paul millsap right now, before boozer comes back? i’m thinking of picking him up and dropping either brad miller or chris duhon

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Nov.29 at 6:52 pm
Evan Yarbrough: Unfortunately you are having some tough luck with J Howard, T-Mac, Beasley, Odom, Deng… I wouldn’t drop anyone you have for any of the guys on the wire… save maybe dropping Odom for Manu… actually, I think I would drop Odom for Manu and Beasley for Nene…

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Nov.29 at 6:53 pm
ti-sizz: Millsap is a great short term option but unless Boozer has a setup it’s a bit late in the game for that. I wouldn’t do that… As for Odom for AK, I would def. make that move!

  • ti-sizz Posted: Nov.29 at 7:40 pm
thanks a lot emry! nothing like expert advice..

  • Balltastics2000 Posted: Nov.30 at 8:50 pm
Hey Emry, well Al Harrington was still available in my league when the trade went down so I was able to snatch him up (thanks for the advice there). I’ve been holding onto Tyson Chandler all season and he’s not giving me much at all, and Udonis Haslem is available. Should I drop Chandler for Haslem? Cheers

  • Balltastics2000 Posted: Nov.30 at 8:53 pm
    Bargnani is also available.

  • Petter Posted: Dec.1 at 12:19 pm
Hi Emry! Quick question: Should I drop Marvin Williams for Shane Battier? I need stls and blocks, and I think that Shane will give more of the hustle stats while still giving enough pts and rebs to be viable. True?

  • Evan Yarbrough Posted: Dec.1 at 10:46 pm
Hey ive got Andrew Bogart who is seeming to be highly injury prone (along with the rest of my time) but him more so, is he going to be worth keeping?

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Dec.1 at 10:55 pm
Balltastics2000: Hmmm, you have to assume that Chandler would get it figured out at some point this year and dropping a 5-6th round value guy is tough for Haslem or Bargnani. I would hold Chandler. Is he your most droppable guy? I do like what I’ve seen out of Andrea and I have added him where I could.

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Dec.1 at 10:56 pm
Petter: I hear you, but I wouldn’t do that. There’s no way Battier is the best available guy in your league for steals and blocks. Is Marvin the worst guy on your team? Battier’s D is nice and he will be good with T-Mac missing a weeks worth of action, but I wouldn’t make that move. WHo else are you looking at?

  • Emry DowningHall Posted: Dec.1 at 10:57 pm
Evan Yarbrough: Yes, injuries suck but hold onto Bogut. SHould be back next week.

  • Balltastics2000 Posted: Dec.2 at 1:25 am
Hey Emry. It’s tough, I’ve got a fairly solid team but I’m coming 4th at the moment in my league. Here’s my team, if you think one of these guys is drop worthy for Bargnani I’ll give it a go to shake things up a bit -
    Chris Paul,
    Devin Harris,
    Mike Bibby,
    Brandon Roy,
    O J Mayo,
    Gerald Wallace,
    Wilson Chandler,
    Al Jefferson,
    Al Horford,
    Al Harrington,
    Troy Murphy,
    Andrew Bogut,
    Tyson Chandler

  • ti-sizz Posted: Dec.2 at 2:09 am
hey emry.. me again al harrington’s still available in my league, but and im considering picking him up, but i hesitate, since im not sure how consistent he will be. the only drops i can make are shaq and brad miller.. shaq’s really killing my FT% and his days off on back to backs are really annoying.. and brad miller.. he just looks older every single day. what do you suggest? should i drop one of them, for al harrington? on another note, is chris duhon a good enough fantasy option, to drop one of those two bigs? i know he can help me with assists, but what else…? thanks for listening man, appreciate it

  • [...] After releasing last week’s column on Wednesday, I don’t have too many waiver gems this week. Still, there are some players making the most of injuries and playing time who deserve consideration: [...]
