SLAMonline Top 50: Joe Johnson, no. 26

The definitive ranking of the best players in the NBA today…

by Earl K. Sneed

While Joe Johnson was in Phoenix, the picture of what he could become was always hazy. You certainly never saw it during  the 48 games he spent in Boston his rookie year. But now J.J. is in the ATL, and he is undeniably the No. 1 option on the offensive end for the Hawks, and the picture is no longer blurry.

J.J. averaged over 20 per game each of his three seasons for the Hawks, and last year it finally paid off with a playoff berth. The athletic swingman has shown that he is one of the most versatile players in the league, spending time at the point and two guard positions throughout his career, while also using his 6-7, 235-pound frame to slide over and guard athletic small forwards.

It’s hard to believe the kid who spent just two seasons at Arkansas, before leaving for the pros after a sophomore All-American campaign, is now 27. He is now ready and poised to serve serious notice to the Eastern Conference this season, after the upstart Hawks pushed the Celtics to the brink of a first round exit. In the series, J.J. averaged 20, while shooting 44 percent from behind the arch.

Last season, Johnson rebounded from an injury-shortened 57-game season the previous year – in which he was averaging 25 per – to have his second best statistical year.

Johnson is one of the rare players that can go left and right, work off of screens to get open from deep, work with the ball in his hands to get his own shot or get others involved, or take small shooting guards down to the block. Oh, and did I mention that he has one of the prettiest Js in the game?

While other players at his position are getting all of the pub while shooting under 40 percent from the field, J.J. has a career 44 percent average from the field, putting up consistent averages in the points column.

One thing keeping Johnson from moving up the charts, for these rankings’ purposes, is the fact that he is a “tweener.”

He is not a deadly sharp-shooting assassin, but he is also not a surefire iso-guy that can put his team on his back and get a shot from anywhere on the court at any time, and mainly in the clutch. At least he hasn’t shown that he is night in and night out. But keep in mind, very few guys are.

No one expects for J.J. to be mentioned in the same sentence as Kobe, LeBron and D-Wade, but for the Hawks to go from a David versus Goliath like effort against the C’s to a perennial contender, Johnson will have to improve from No. 26 to No. 15 on this list, and he can’t rely on the emergence of Josh Smith and Al Horford to get the Hawks over the top.

J.J. is a more than adequate scorer and shooter, but as the No.1 option, he has not shown ATL fanatics that he can ascend to the next level. Can he average 25 plus and still shoot over 40 percent from deep? For that matter, can he still knock down 40 percent from deep, a feat that he hasn’t reached since knocking-down close to 48 percent from behind the arch in his last year as a Sun.

So, the big questions are what can J.J. do to join the game’s elite, and how will he lead the Hawks now that they’re no longer a secret?

Either way, you know what you’re getting from Employee No. 2, and anything he shows this season will simply be icing on the cake. Already a 2-time All-Star, keep your eyes on Johnson this season, now that he is surrounded by the right supporting cast. The picture is clear – J.J. is quietly one of the best that the league has to offer, and if he continues to progress, he will soon be a household name.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 8:09 am
    my bad…

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 8:10 am
thats cool. what you think of JJ ranking?

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.27 at 8:13 am
JJ is a flat out killer. Anyone who doesnt think he can be ‘that dude’ on a playoff squad is wrong. He can improve though, and as Sneed mentioned can be labelled as a tweener, but isnt Gilbert Arenas? I love his game to bits. He’s always under control and looks very comfortable with his job, not just as a veteran scorer, but as a leader on the court as well.

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 8:14 am
true that Hurst, what you think bout games today?

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 8:14 am
i told already…i would take him over Lebron on a close international game (just because he can shoot the ball while having solid athletisism). He seems a heady player.

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.27 at 8:16 am
I have JJ around here on the list. In PHX he wasnt the leader on that team with a happy Marion and developing Amare behind Nash in 04-05. I think that the Hawks being unsuccessful for such a long time may have hurt him by 5-10 spots in the list. If they were successful hes around top 20.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 8:16 am
    solid points Hursty…

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.27 at 8:26 am
Did Johnson play in the Worlds in ‘06? I have some vague thinking that he did. Anyways, he was on the Team USA training team.

  • mike Posted: Sep.27 at 8:27 am
he is not better than ray ray, rip, vince and ai he should be ranked much lower

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 8:30 am
yes he is better than all

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 8:31 am
    he played in the world’s….

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.27 at 8:32 am
Hes better than all those you listed (but not Allen Iveron) Mike. You meant Iggy though didnt you? Go crawl back inside your hole of hate.

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 8:33 am
    nasty hurst

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 8:40 am
he is better than vince and A.I (easily) and maybe better than Rip…Ray seems to be unexpectedly underappreciated being the best shooter in the world and at the same time being an American guy…strange…

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 8:40 am
mIke those are excellent points. I never thought of it that way..that’s groundbreaking type thinking right there. I mean, how do you argue that? I’m sold..

  • Simone S.Y Lawy Posted: Sep.27 at 8:43 am
    calm down, Hursty

  • scott Posted: Sep.27 at 8:51 am
This seems about right for Johnson but he still made a huge mistake by leaving Phoenix (they would have won at least one ring by now). Does anybody really think Atlanta is getting back to the playoffs or that was a one year fluke. I’m leaning towards the later.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 8:51 am
    Moose in da house!

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 8:51 am
This is a good placement for Johnson. A subtle all star.

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.27 at 8:52 am
Calm down? CALM DOWN!? *jokes* Nah, Mike says sh8t like that quite often without backing it up. (Unless he does so now). Its frustrating when anyone says stuff like that. Not just him.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 8:56 am
It’s the Zursty Hursty, for lack of a better nickname to rebound yours of me . . .

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.27 at 8:57 am
IN NO ORDER (for the morons), for me, the East playoffs will comprise of: pistons, celtics, wizards, cavaliers, bucks, magic, raptors, philly AND one of the following fringe teams - ATL, MIA, NJ. I dont see any of the other teams competing.(Sorry BET).

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 8:58 am
    The kids are here… I’m out….

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.27 at 8:58 am
G’day Moose. Check out the blog.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 8:58 am
    BUCKS…?

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 8:59 am
    aight hurst, i’m on it . . .

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 9:00 am
    Hold up .. RAPTORS?

  • scott Posted: Sep.27 at 9:00 am
Joe Johnson is a nice player but Josh Smith is their most important player. Smith has the potential to be another AK-47 only difference is that Smith does everything a lot better then Kirlenko. Just can’t see Atlanta getting back to the playoffs the East is much deeper and 37 wins isn’t getting you into the playoffs this year.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:01 am
you talkin bout what RV wrote?

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:02 am
fluxland, was that a shot at young people???

  • scott Posted: Sep.27 at 9:04 am
Good picks mostly Hursty but I can’t see Milwaukee getting into the playoffs. It should be more like Boston, Detroit, Cleveland, Orlando, Philadelphia, Toronto, Washington and Miami. Milwaukee has a defensive minded coach with a bunch of players who really aren’t known for playing defense.

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.27 at 9:04 am
    @Moose- yes on both points.
@Flux/Giannis- can you explain why not? I will give my reasoning after you give yours.

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 9:05 am
Yeah, Moose it was.. this place is becoming a kindergarten. Talking about cereals and recess..etc etc..

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:07 am
come on, flux. we’re not THAT young. Usually we be talkin bout hoops.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:08 am
Hursty, I didn’t read the whole thing, that was a huge-@ss article. I’ll read it some other time when I’m not that lazy.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:08 am
and fluxland, how old might you be . . . ?

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 9:09 am
The Raptors had a giant roster swap, the PG situation took a hit, Jose will be playing 36 min plus and burn out by April, bench has no depth, Bosh or JO get injured or miss games - goodnight playoffs. Rebounding issues have not been solved (don’t kid yourself), no legit shooters, no clutch players, no legit 3… etc etc etc.. The East is stacked.

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.27 at 9:09 am
Right but theyre TEAM is far better than the Nets and Heat. I also forgot the Bulls as one of my fringe units. My bad.

  • halkias Posted: Sep.27 at 9:10 am
    ela re bouroush paixtara!!!

  • scott Posted: Sep.27 at 9:11 am
How won’t Toronto make the playoffs. They got rid of TJ Ford to let everyone know that Calderon is running the team and as a bonus they got O’Neal in return. Now I know O’Neal has missed like 500 games over the last three years but if he can play in 70 and give Bosh some support how wont they win 45 - 48 games this year.

  • scott Posted: Sep.27 at 9:12 am
    Calderon>>>>>>>>>>Ford

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 9:12 am
Old enough, Moose. What about Chicago? No love for Vinny? And do not sleep on the Pacers.

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 9:14 am
scott, I am not getting into a Ford/Jose discussion. I’ve had a 1000 of those this summer. Jose’s last two playoff performances. - fumble vs NJ on last play game six and hot one night cold the next vs Orlando, doesn’t spell clutch performer to me. Hurst didn’t see the Bulls comment before I typed mine.

  • Simone S.Y Lawy Posted: Sep.27 at 9:15 am
Hawks will rise in East Con’ce… watch out, Boston

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.27 at 9:17 am
@Flux-read above. Good points as well. Same as scottt. My comment regarding team was re. the Bucks. The starting 5 is Ridnour, Redd, Alexander, Villanueva and Bogut. Pretty solid imo. Far better than the others. Chemistry may be a problem, and people seem to think Skiles will get the most out of his team early on in his tenure (not 4-5 years down the track).

  • Simone S.Y Lawy Posted: Sep.27 at 9:19 am
    where’s jefferson? Hurtsy..

  • scott Posted: Sep.27 at 9:21 am
You’re right Flux I forgot how clutch Ford has been in the playoffs and you have no worry about injury to Ford. Who do you think is coming out of the East.

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 9:21 am
Ridnour and Bogut = SUSPECT. Toronto, like many other teams I suppose , have a lot of IFs. The problem is if any of the starters go down for any length of time (and you look at the bench) the team is DUNZO.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:22 am
@ Simone S.Y Lawy: We are watchin out . . . and I hate to say it, but we’re scared.

  • the baconator Posted: Sep.27 at 9:22 am
He reminds me of David West, in that he’s a player no one’s really heard of, but yet he’s still an all-star and a damn good one. It’ll be interesting to see this season if he steps up his game to make up for the loss of Childress. At any rate, good pick

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:23 am
the hawks are nasty. I hate to say it, but they got some nasty playaz on their team. congrats, lang.

  • Pve84 Posted: Sep.27 at 9:23 am
Joe is solid (as shown in the playoffs) and is still in a position to improve. Add smith & horford (and don’t sleep on bibby) and you have to like the Hawks more than the Bucks. Maybe the bucks will make the playoffs but they aren’t much better than they were last year. I think they would have been significantly better if they kept Mo, but Ridnour is too much of a question mark to favor the Bucks over the Hawks who finally made it to the promised land last season and are bound to be hungry for more.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:23 am
    good analogy, baconator.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 9:23 am
    geia sou re Halkia!!!
@hursty…:just don’t see them having sufficient talent,..they are also a young team with many new faces. At the same time i think Skiles is one of the best coaches in the NBA so you never know…

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 9:24 am
Yeah but if we kept TJ and he goes down we got Jose. Who do we got now Scott? WHO? A scrub? A rook? FORD is 10K times more clutch then Jose. Read each of theirs wiki if you need to. CLUTCH is not a word associated with Jose while with FORD it is. Jose is “fools gold”- efficient for 3.5 qs and the pulls a David Blaine. (I said I wasn’t gonna do this, darn it)

  • scott Posted: Sep.27 at 9:25 am
Chicago should have drafted Beasley. Doesn’t Chicago need scoring down low? Perhaps Beasley could have given that to them? Chicago’s backcourt wasn’t as big as a problem as the frontcourt. I thought Beasley would have been the better choice for Chicago.

  • Simone S.Y Lawy Posted: Sep.27 at 9:26 am
what makes ya’ll think BUCK is gonna make the playoff? they’re dunzo…

  • scott Posted: Sep.27 at 9:27 am
So I’m taking it that Flux is a frustrated Raptors fan?

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.27 at 9:27 am
Ok, well if Wade gets injured and misses even 10 games then the Heat season is effectively over again. The Bucks can survive without one of their starters for 10 games at a time. I forgot about Jefferson btw. Sessions will back up the point as well. NJ is just, I dont know exactly, but I cant see them in the playoffs this year. Anything can happen with the Bulls. Russ could tell you that.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:27 am
The bucks are dunzo . . . we got andrew bogut, y’all!

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:28 am
Yeh, Wade shouldn’t get hurt this year. I went to one of his last games before he got hurt in Miami last year and he lit up the jazz for 25 points and a game winning buzzer beater. hurrah.

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 9:30 am
No, scott… REALISTIC. I don’t really care what happens in the regular season or how many wins they get. IF they make the playoffs .. they are going nowhere. Period. I am sick of people saying contenders when the bench looks like the cast of Semi-Pro.

  • Simone S.Y Lawy Posted: Sep.27 at 9:31 am
Aussie’s love their only nba player…

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 9:31 am
if Jermaine is healthy and plays 90% of his best Toronto is top-4 in the East…don’t forget that they have one of the top-4 point guards in the world finally being the undisputed starting point.(i know,i know….). And Bosh showed in the Olympics that he is a complete big man (top-5 NBA).

  • scott Posted: Sep.27 at 9:33 am
I never said they were going anywhere in the playoffs or that Toronto was a contender. However, Toronto has a much better chance of getting to the playoffs then Indiana, Milwaukee or Chicago.

  • scott Posted: Sep.27 at 9:34 am
Semi - Pro was a horrible movie. Jive Turkey.

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 9:34 am
if I had wheels I’d be a truck.. i made my point about Jose…the NBA is played in the US not the world.. Bosh had his best games vs the weak teams in the Olympics and got worked vs the better ones.. don’t kid yourself… and had only limited duties… he’s got a lot more work to do when he plays for the Raps…So the Olympics mean nothing.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:35 am
Bosh was always an elite big. CB4!!!

  • Simone S.Y Lawy Posted: Sep.27 at 9:36 am
    you got the point, flux

  • scott Posted: Sep.27 at 9:36 am
Actually the NBA is played in Canada too.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:37 am
come on, flux. Bosh is great, and you can’t deny it.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 9:39 am
if you had wheels you would definitelly be a truck…!!!(just kidding)and Bosh didn’t have his best games only against weak teams, maybe he wasn’t great in the final if that’s what you wanna say but not many NBA teams have the size of the Gasol brothers so don’t worry about Toronto IF Jermaine comes back strong (a big if..)

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:39 am
Here is the proof that he can hold up the Raptors in the L: 22.3, 8.7, 2.6.

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 9:40 am
he’s great (stacks numbers) cuz he plays for the Raps.. on any other decent team he’s another body and don’t get me started on his 4th q performances..

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:41 am
Come on, fluxland. a video coming as soon as the moderators let it through for you, flux.

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 9:42 am
Giannis… you didn’t watch all the games, IMO.. Moose.. that’s great .. tell me who else is there to take those numbers from him?

  • scott Posted: Sep.27 at 9:42 am
@Flux…Bosh played bad in the Olympics so he has to a lot to prove in Toronto. However, the Olympics mean nothing so if Bosh played bad during the Olympics (Spain for example) it doesn’t matter cause it is not the NBA. Thanks for clearing that up.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:42 am
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMvjmkv6j5M

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:43 am
fluxland, i just put up a video for you. And now he got Jermain ONeal to take some of that away. I’m betting on Bosh keepin most of it. Friendly wager, Fluxland.

  • scott Posted: Sep.27 at 9:43 am
I can’t wait for when Chris Bosh shows up on the list.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:45 am
Me neither, scott. And he’ll be top 15.

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 9:45 am
I never said he has anything to prove.. when did I say that. I simply said that his duties on both teams are completely different, and that what I meant by “he has a lot more work to do” Cleared up, now? Need to work on your comprehension, pal.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 9:46 am
….truth is i didn’t watch all the games . i watched the U.S. games though…..anyway,we will see in a few months. I just think that the presense of a good Jermaine can really help him (last year they were palying with Rasho at center..)

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 9:46 am
I’m out. fluxland, enjoy the nasty Chris Bosh Top Ten video when it shows up. I’ll be back later. Peace!

  • Simone S.Y Lawy Posted: Sep.27 at 9:46 am
Andrew bogut won’t be on this list…

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 9:47 am
Highlight reels don’t impress me at all. List mean very little either.. Oh there goes CB4 for another 1st round exit (the new Tmac) but hey look at those highlights and let’s not forget he’s ranked X on X list. YES!!

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 9:48 am
Andrew shouldn’t be on that list (for now…)

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.27 at 9:48 am
Not getting into the whole world vs. NBA thing, but my opinion regarding the Bucks has nothing to do with bias on Bogut. I can see that so far, he probably hasnt lived up to the expectations of a number one pick, but, he has had numerous 20/15 games and 25/10 games. But, he is only an above average centre, not a star. The Bucks are a better team roster wise than any of the others I mentioned. Problem is the Knicks have a pretty nice roster as well.

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 9:51 am
knicks have good roster on paper, but they just need to turn it into solid play

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.27 at 9:52 am
Of course he wont be on this list and shouldnt ever have been. Not in my dreams would he be. Calderon is in danger of missing out. Danny Granger? Has he come up yet?

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 9:54 am
Hursty .. I think it’s (no order) Boston, Cavs, Detroit, Magic, Philly, Wizards… then you got 2 spots that are up for grabs and no team IMO has a drastically better chance then the rest.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 9:55 am
Calderon is the current world champion and an unselfish person in general so he propably won’t bother if he doesn’t make our happy list…(if he ever see it ,that is…)

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 9:57 am
calderon is not making the list, his play is solid but there are still 50 players better than him

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:01 am
    1)Deron Williams
    2)Chris Paul
    3)Steeve Nash - Jose Calderon (a tie)

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 10:01 am
hey Money Bill, what’s good? 100!

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:02 am
    but enough with Calderon…

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 10:02 am
Giannis, I’d take Rondo over Calderon.

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 10:02 am
g’day moose, whats the go bro?

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:03 am
    i bet you would….

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 10:03 am
How did the Raptors get into this in the first place? back to atlanta . . .

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 10:04 am
chillin so hard i could be an ice sculpture, Money. (BETCATS, holla!)

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 10:04 am
Giannis, I bet I would too.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:05 am
    !!!!

  • B. Long Posted: Sep.27 at 10:05 am
Lang had to have been behind this.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 10:05 am

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 10:08 am
cool moose, saturday morning there or friday?

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 10:08 am
Saturday morning. How bout over there in AUS?

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 10:09 am
lang would have him top 10

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 10:10 am
sunday morning, well 10 minutes into it. its 12:10 am here and im tired as fu*k

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 10:12 am
understandable. same here, but its 10:15 on saturday.

  • tinchek Posted: Sep.27 at 10:14 am
    canadian pig vomit?

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 10:15 am
you check out my update of blog?

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 10:16 am
tinchek, you had to be there

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:18 am
@Moose…:i have the feeling that in a pick-up game with our lives on the line you would take rondo over Jose, A.I over Manu, Carmelo over Nocioni, ELTON BRAND over Scola, and Al Jefferson over Pau and ….do you got any doubts on the result of this…?

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 10:21 am
    i would take jose,ai, melo,scola and al

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:22 am
    same result file mou…

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:24 am
any combination with A.I. and MELO would lose…they are great salesmen to high school kids but not serious team players…

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 10:25 am
Giannis, for my life I would take Calderon, Iverson, Carmelo, Elton Brand and Al Jefferson. I just like Rondo on the Celtics with the big three, and he’s learning a lot. After he gets the jumper he’ll be deadly. Right now he has NO jumper.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:25 am
and basketball is still a team game (although AND-1 is trying hard for the last decade to tell as the other way with obvious results on the game of young american players…)

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 10:27 am
true that, but if i had my life depending on a pickup game i would want a player that plays with lots of heart everytime (AI) and a dirty player who will do anything to win for me or throw a punch (melo)

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:27 am
Rondo will get the jumper when LeBron will get the jumper….

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 10:28 am
if i had a $5 on it instead of my life i wouldn’t take Pau

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:30 am
that was my mistake(i apologize). i meant pick - up game as “one and done”. Not a game played on the street with street rules….

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 10:30 am
Giannis…. Nash/Jose are better then: CBillups, Tony Parker, Marbury, Baron Davis, Steve Francis?

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 10:32 am
btw Nash and Jose couldn’t play defense if THEIR lives were on the line.

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 10:32 am
but didn’t you just say my team was wrong because of no team play

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:33 am
think of Pau playing as part of the above mentioned team, not as an individual (and think also of A.I and the others as part of their respective team, not what they would have done on a one-on-one streetball game..)

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:34 am
@flux…:Steveeee Franchise..!!!!(i love you only for mentioning his name!!!!)

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 10:35 am
its too late in the night to argue. so for sake of saving myself thinking i will say yes

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.27 at 10:36 am
    Me too MBW

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:36 am
I honestly (no joke) didn’t observe that you had the one and only Starbury on the mix…what can i say now..just thanks!!!!(i know it is not enough…)

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 10:38 am
    u get my email hurst?

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:40 am
i agree with you on the 10:32 comment but the whole concept is to see my picks playing as team…(Spain never had e problem with NAVARO’S, jose, and gARBAJOSA’S individual defense. There is also something called: TEAM defense and this is what matters usually in a game)

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 10:42 am
yeah but i want flat out ballers who will kill motherf*ckers for me if my lifes on the line. Do i get to picka coach?

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:44 am
and my favorite Starbury highlight reel:

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.27 at 10:45 am
    leme check

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:45 am
    you can pick coach megale..!!

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 10:48 am
ok, i will take pop then pitheya

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 10:50 am
I don’t like Marbury’s attitude or motivation, but his skill is undeniable. No way Jose are Nash are better then any of the guys I listed. And that makes Jose not even close to 4th best in the world. FRANCHISE is the man!!!

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:51 am
pitheya?(tell me in english to give you the word)

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:51 am
pop is the best pick to coach my team,so nice call

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.27 at 10:52 am
    I got it, replied too…

  • Josh Posted: Sep.27 at 10:52 am
In the write up, it’s stated that Johnson gets overlooked while his peers who shoot under 40 percent get all the pub. This is flat out wrong. What elite perimter player shoots under 40 percent? There isn’t one. Johnson’s a solid player but what limits him from reaching the top tier or the top of the second tier even is that he’s only an average athlete with an average wingspan. He’s very skilled but he can be contained out on the perimeter by good defenders and forced to shoot too many contested jumpers. When he does get inside, he’s not explosive and acrobatic enough to finish with a dunk or a contorting layup–he mainly goes with floaters. His inability to get to the line, again partly due to his average athleticism, prevents him from being a no.1 offensive option. I think he’s a no.2 option on a good team, a no.3 option on a great team.

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 10:52 am
child or children, im just spelling it as i say it lol

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:54 am
check Marbury at 8:44 of my clip :he reaches legendary status!!!
By the way: for those of you that don’t know about that stuff (i hope everybody…) the guy is definitelly on drugs on this video , most propably coke

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 10:56 am
child: pedi children pedia, keep on cool..!!!

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 10:59 am
havent looked at your video you linked but i presume it is the video of marbury interview where he starts yelling at the end?

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 11:00 am
thanks for clearing that up, i ain’t know how to spell sh!t in greek

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 11:04 am
yes it is this video…i remember Bill Simmons saying for him that now he has reached the point of where we are not asking about him if he will be in the league in 2 years but rather if he will be alive…sad end to an extremely talented player…(i wonder what his I.Q. is though…)

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 11:08 am
    ok im out….yassou

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 11:08 am
it’s not drugs.. it’s called chemical imbalance. If it were coke he would have got suspended by now… NBA doesn’t mind week but coke is a different story.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 11:10 am
    correct…!!!yassou

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Sep.27 at 11:11 am
    booya!

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 11:12 am
man ,you got no idea how many big time players do serious drugs…(i ain’t say that i know the exact number or names…)

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 11:15 am
i tell you just this: it was part of the deal in order for NBA players to appear at the Athens Olympics NOT to have ANY kind of drug (or anabolic and that stuff)testing on them…that doesn’t mean that all players from other countries are clean though…

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 11:16 am
I’m just saying the NBA doesn’t usually mess around with hard drugs… they have lost a few players to them and are tested regularly. Also, remember the Birdman. Coke also wouldn’t make you do what Marbury did. Ecstasy, maybe. But I don’t think he does drugs, something is not right with his melon… judging from the distance.

  • JackBrown Posted: Sep.27 at 11:17 am
Brandon Roy > The Armadillo Cowboy.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 11:20 am
they have to expose somebody because nobody will believe that out of 350 millionaires of such a background nobody is doing nothing…they just choose someone with a name that cannot hurt the league image…anyway enough of this,it is just a sad truth that anybody close to pro athletes knows….

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 11:20 am
Oh, is this the NBA does steroids European argument? I don’t know.. maybe…Dwight Howard does look suspicious at times. Like Carrot Top.. but I doubt it. It’s hard to hide all the side affects from hard drugs for long periods of time and not worth risking millions IMO. I think these guys work hard to get their bodies to the point they do.

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 11:23 am
    Diego Armando… *sigh*… effing drugs!!

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 11:25 am
in a survey taken by the greek sociology university 10 years ago ,the majority of the greek track&field athletes asked if the would take drugs to be world champions if they knew they would die at 40 they answered YES (no jokig, they weren’t giving names and it was not oficial,..)

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 11:28 am
the mentality here in Rom ain’t that different either…

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 11:29 am
    ah…Diego….

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 11:33 am
you are comparing apples to oranges I think. I bet most of the sports were olympic sports or low profile where making serious money is hard to do. Being a world champion brings more exposure and more money. So you can see why take that risk. You can be a nobody in the NBA and still make more money then a track and field guy.

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 11:36 am
And big time players have superior talent compared to their counterparts.. they don’t need drugs.. it’s the guys that can’t make over the hump that usually take them.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 11:40 am
i agree with your reasoning but i have inside info on some things i am telling you…on the other hand some things are obvious even for kidd…i mean..you think that human race had such a development in the last 20 years for LeBron making Dr.J’s dunks look easy, and for Usain Bolt finishing 6 metres ahead of “king” Carl Lewis (a rare physical phenom was called on 1984 for those too young then…) making him look slow..?? you don’t have to be an expert, just common sense…

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 11:42 am
“even for kidd” = even for a kid (ithink i should stop typing…)

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 11:50 am
It’s not that unrealistic to think with the way athletes train, developments in sports technology and human genetics to think they have developed that fast. You think kids in high school back then trained they way they do now? Or professionals for that matter. Plus the downsides of taking drugs are too many (as the Germans showed us back in the day) that again..it’s not worth the risk. When drugs are involved the results are obvious right away.. (germans back then, the chinese with swimming last decade) ..and don’t forget Donovan Bailey and Michael Johnson before Usain… it wasn’t just a leap from Carl Lewis to Bolt.

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.27 at 11:58 am
AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAHAHAH Yeah, wow….. So Michael Redd gets 40-something and JJ, the identical phoenix counterpart, gets 20-something. That’s all I’m even posting in this thread. Literally.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 11:59 am
physically (naturally-biologically however it called correct) it is imposible to have such a leap in 20 years. I am not the one to know but i was curious and i read and asked experts. And be sure that top athetes at the early 80’s where having serious training all year long. (the same “doubts” expressed Carl Lewis on a recent interview, you understand that he couldn’t say more).

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 12:00 pm
even this was an honor Jukai…(seriously)

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 12:02 pm
and if you cannot figure out the difference on the overall game between Johnson and Redd….

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 12:04 pm
Carl Lewis started complaining as soon as he started losing..he never said anything about drugs before that. And rumors has it drugs were in the sport a long time before the started losing.. so whatever that means to you.

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 12:06 pm
    Identical counterpart? Please elaborate…

  • scott Posted: Sep.27 at 12:07 pm
Johnson can play the point. I forgot that Redd to can run the point for Milwaukee. Come on Johnson is the superior player to Redd.

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 12:10 pm
Just so you know Giannis…. 4 of the 5 top finishers in the 88 100 m final tested positive for doping (when Ben got stripped and Carl given the gold). And that includes Carl, Linford and Mitchell. So Carl Lewis needs to STFU because he’s a hypocrite.

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 12:12 pm
    Read the book Speed Trap…

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 12:23 pm
that is true(and the fact that doping is here a long time) but doesn’t change the fact that we get from 9.95 to 9.55 (Usain’s record if he had given it all for 100 metres) in 20 years time. To have such a rapid improvment on the most popular track&field sport (meaning we always had great athletes participating ,from Valeri Borzov to Carl Lewis to many others)..i mean…check if you can what was the improvment (and time period) from Borzov to early 80’s…

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 12:24 pm
i am also sure that Carl did the same…

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 12:30 pm
and i can asure that if Usain had made the mistake to run a 9.55 at the Olympics(which he did but not officially)now he would have been “Ben Johnson 2008″. Jach Rogh wouldn’t need the lab results ,such a thing would have destroyed his marketing plan for ten years(”gentlemen,we need to break the world record every year for the sake of revenue so we do it slowly”)…

  • big nigga Posted: Sep.27 at 12:33 pm
joe johnson is a very underrated player
he can score as well as pass
and last yr. the coaches of the nba chose him as a reserve for the All-Star Game over veteran ray allen
when that happens, u know ur doing something right

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 12:36 pm
There have been studies done here that show girls are developing at a younger age then ever before (faster).. I assume the same could be said for boys. So it’s not hard to believe that the times are dropping faster with the inclusion of other factors (say, shoes, clothing etc). Also, let’s remember that electronic timing didn’t kick in until the 8os and hundredths of a second became part of it..anyway.. it went from a 9.9 to a 9.6 in 30 years and prior to that from a 10.2 to a 9.9 in 30 years.. what’s the difference and what’s so shocking to you? It really is not that hard to believe humans and their development could do that. We are smarter then ever before, no? Kids graduate colleges at 9 years old.. what it’s all drugs? Evolution, no?

  • niQ Posted: Sep.27 at 12:38 pm
    silent assassin

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 12:38 pm
Owens runs a 10.2 in ‘36 and Hines runs a 9.9 in ‘68! Freaking dopers, I tell ya!!!

  • Mo Posted: Sep.27 at 12:50 pm
Joe Johnson is a solid underrated player.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 1:07 pm
from 1968 to 1994 (26 years)we get from 9.95 to 9.85,.. seems ok to me.(and to Zach Rogh i guess!!!). At the same time, a difference between pre-world war 2 and 1968 can definitelly be atributted to proffesional training.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 1:14 pm
and no ,we ain’t smarter than ever (unfortunatelly). This is a concept that western civilization is trying to impose based on its obvious technical achievments, in order to hide stagnance (or even steps backward) on other major aspects of human activity…(philosophy being one of them)

  • MeloMan13 Posted: Sep.27 at 1:17 pm
woah woah i like JR smith but i dont kno if hes better than Joe johnson…

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 1:18 pm
    he can jump higher…

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 1:19 pm
    so he is propably better!!!!!

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.27 at 1:21 pm
OK you just opened up like 10 cans of worms there… email me fluxland at (really warm)mail dot com

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 1:28 pm
i cannot e-mail you and don’t take this bad, i am sure it would have been interesting (and creative )to elaborate with you in some intelectual fields..i really enjoyed this conversation though and i love this “10 cans of worms” expression (first time i hear it …
    )

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 2:08 pm
    Moose back in da house!

  • TADOne Posted: Sep.27 at 2:09 pm
I have no idea what the previous 198 comments said because I’m not reading them all, but J.J. is a player I always look over or forget. It is probably because he is quiet and unassuming, or the fact he plays for the Hawks. Stat wise and by his skill set, this is a good ranking for him. The fact that he is so forgettable at most times makes me think he is overrated. Taking a glance back at the players ranked below him, I guess I can’t really argue. Either way, you know Joe could be so much better. The Hawks need him to figure that out.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 2:11 pm
I agree, TAD. The rest of these comments had arguments about the Raptors and Chris Bosh, and the Nuggets, AI and Melo. And basically everyone agreed with what you just said.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.27 at 2:20 pm
@ fluxland: You have some serious issues against powerforwards, don’t you? First KG, then Bosh…

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.27 at 2:20 pm
Two of the best powerforwards in the league today..

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.27 at 2:22 pm
Anyways, Joe Johnson is a solid player who is about to reach his prime. One of these days he’s going to breakout and explode, that’s how close he is to being a top tier superstar. He is, though in my books one of the elite players today in the game. I’m looking forward to what the Hawks can do this season.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 2:23 pm
yeh, I agree with teddy. “kg is a poser” . . . come on, man.

  • what Posted: Sep.27 at 2:23 pm
I would probably put JJ 5-6 spots higher… of course I’m biased as a Hawks fan, but I’m pretty confident that with a non-potatohead coach he would be a more efficient and better player.

  • k-mart Posted: Sep.27 at 2:24 pm
i think jj is a top 15 at least he’s one of my fav players and most complete

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 2:25 pm
teddy, J.J. hit his prime a few years ago and he is still in it. In ‘06 he averaged 25 ppg, 4.4 apg, and 4.2 rpg.

  • what Posted: Sep.27 at 2:25 pm
Jukai you are smoking crack, Redd can’t pass or defend nearly as well as Joe can.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 2:25 pm
@ what: you think johnson is THAT much better than J-Smoove?

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 2:43 pm
    Nobody’s here . . .

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 3:00 pm
it is because a bomb exploded at around 12:00 pm….

  • what Posted: Sep.27 at 3:12 pm
Moose I thought J-Smoove should be ranked higher too, but Joe’s basketball IQ and ability to avoid making bad plays makes him that much better than Smoove at this point. Hopefully that changes over the next couple of seasons.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.27 at 3:40 pm
@ Moose: What I’m saying is that he can do EVEN better.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.27 at 3:49 pm
J-smoove was 20cm close to not even making the list…so he is lucky in that sense even to be in the top-50.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.27 at 3:51 pm
I understand what you guys are saying, teddy and what. But, teddy, I have to say that I think J.J. has reached his peak and will not elevate from 2006.

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.27 at 6:43 pm
this is so exciting!!!!! JJ is a very talented player and he should have stayed in Phoneix. Imagine if the suns still had him….

Great article. I liked it and Joe Johnson is ONE of the best in the league. :D

  • what Posted: Sep.27 at 10:31 pm
Damn I remember being in ISS in high school… didn’t know they did that sh-t in states other than GA too

  • scott Posted: Sep.27 at 11:53 pm
It is a damn shame Johnson broke his eye socket in the 2005 playoffs. They would have beaten San Antonio and won the championship. Maybe Johnson would have felt different and stayed in Phoenix. Imagine having Johnson, Marion, Nash and Stoudemire as the main ingredients to your team. Basically you are now set for the next 5 - 6 years. Johnson was a perfect fit in Phoenix. How did this not work out?

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.28 at 12:29 am
haha! What a variety of comments lol. Sorry MBW about the pick up game.

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.28 at 12:31 am
Money Scott. He was also unhappy with not being the no.1 or 2 option on most plays, but with him, they would have won the chip that year imo. They would have beaten the Pistons. But the pistons had a very good team that year as well.

No better time for some shameless self-promotion. I’m officially linked (click the link, click the link). Subliminal messages rule. Ohh and 294th

The run & gun Suns of the D’Antoni era got exactly the share of titles they deserved (broken eye socket or not…). You cannot be the champion in a basketball league when you are so weak in one of the most basic fundamentals of the game (Defense). Even if this league is the NBA…

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.28 at 4:23 am
it was very entartaining though to see them play and i will really miss them…

  • scott Posted: Sep.28 at 6:00 am
@giannis…Did you forget that the NBA has the greatest players in the world? Perhaps that is one all the great international players flock to the NBA to play against the best and to get paid.

  • Giannis Bourousis Posted: Sep.28 at 6:20 am
NBA has the best players in the world (by a wide margin that is…)but the quality of basketball is not at the level of the 3 best leagues in Europe (first is Spain and then is Italy and Greece..)

I don’t get this, really. Joe Johnson and Michael Redd pretty much are IDENTICAL save assists. Joe Johnson has about two more assists a game than Redd: plase note how much better of a team Atlanta is. Obviously, Johnson is a better player, but twenty spots better? Really?
What’s this about Johnson being able to play point? Every year there was a suicidal RUSH to get a point guard in Atlanta. They traded away half their team for the shell of Mike Bibby. If Johnson was such an effective point guard, why was he traded out of Phoenix when Phoenix really needed a back-up? Why has Altanta drafted point guards continuously?
Joe Johnson plays the point, sometimes. He’s not a point guard. He is NOT a good point guard at all.
If Michael Redd is 40-something, Johnson should be 30-something.

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.28 at 4:01 pm
JJ is definatly NOT a point guard and never wanted to be one. That was a crazy scheme the Atlanta front office/Mike Woodson made. He is very versitile, and numbers arent everything. JJ also gets them ‘hockey assists’ were his pass leads to a pass that leads to a basket. The point is, JJ is more of a playmaker, but still is no PG. Its a good spot for him

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.28 at 4:34 pm
Oh c’mon, everyone who is a guard gets hockey assists. Michael Redd loves to swing around the perimeter and get that extra pass in to open up the floor.
He’s not that great of a passer or a defender. He’s a slightly better Michael Redd. I guess I’m just not seeing something in him that everyone else sees. More upside?

  • Moose Posted: Sep.28 at 7:09 pm
Simone, them censors don’t work for you guys or what? If you really want to do that, please email it to BETCATS himself next time, we don’t wanna see that stuff.

He is not a deadly sharp-shooting assassin, but he is also not a surefire iso-guy that can put his team on his back and get a shot from anywhere on the court at any time….What!?! Was I the only one who saw that 20 point quarter against the Celtics in the playoffs?Joe Johnson isn’t a franchise player, (but there are only 6 of those in the league), but he’s a top 5 shooting guard behind Kobe, DWADE, T-MAC and ahead of Ray Allen.#26? More like #20
