SLAMonline Top 50: Caron Butler, no. 24

The definitive ranking of the best players in the NBA today…

by Holly MacKenzie

After being drafted 10th in the 2002 NBA Draft, Caron Butler said he would make the teams who passed on him regret it. Spending time in Miami and Los Angeles before being traded to Washington, Caron left fans in both cities wishing he was still on their squad.

Defying logic and limitations far longer than his six years in the NBA, before we delve into Caron the player and why he is holding it down in the 24th spot on our countdown, let us first look at the person behind the player to see the passion that keeps him going. All odds stacked against him, his path to becoming one of the best in the NBA is a good one.

By now, most of you know Caron didn’t really get into playing basketball the way most children did. He didn’t allow himself to fully fall in love with the game until it ended up becoming the only thing he did have. Incarcerated when he was 14 (after 15 or so arrests), Caron began to see the game as his way out. That and a meal ticket towards Little Debbie snack cakes. Before he was through, he was cashing in those tickets daily and the game had his heart.

How can anyone root against a guy who counted his victories by snacks won? Don’t knock that hustle.

Turning things around upon his release, Caron had a more than successful collegiate career, averaging 20.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in his sophomore year and capping-off his college experience by pouring in 32 points in a loss to Maryland in the Elite Eight. He was also named co-Big East player of the year in what would be his final season at Connecticut.

Despite that strong send off to the Draft, the drop to 10th happened and he really wasn’t pleased. Not that this would end up being a problem. He treats obstacles as stepping-stones, reminders to keep pushing.

While his rookie season was successful, it was in the postseason of 2004 that the basketball world was forced to stop and take a closer look at the Miami Heat and their guy, Caron. With a rookie named Dwyane Wade tearing it up, Caron almost seemed to fade into the background. Then Game 7 came, and he showed up to play. 23 points, 9 rebounds and one Slamadamonth-worthy throw down over Baron Davis, and he had arrived.

May 4, 2004, the NBA learned Tough Juice can be tough to swallow. Boom will attest to that.

After being in the spotlight during the playoffs, Caron ended up being sent to LA along with Lamar Odom and Brian Grant. Playing alongside Kobe Bryant only aided his development as he continued to improve his game and come into his own on the floor. While he spent just one year in LA before being sent to Washington, he solidified his reputation as a hard-nosed, heady player whose versatility allowed him to provide whatever was needed for his team to be successful.

Washington–Caron’s home for the past three years. While health plagued the team in each of these seasons, Caron worked himself into a two-time All-Star while also emerging as a leader on a Wizards team that lost Gilbert Arenas for most of this past season. To anyone wondering why he’s got the 24th spot, consider this–despite playing banged up for the better part of the year (and appearing in only 58 games due to injury), he averaged more than 20 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. The three others in this category? LeBron, Kobe and Vince Carter.

His fearlessness is exactly what the Wizards need from him and exactly what his previous teams lament letting get away. Whether he is making the decision to get to the basket or is letting it fly from outside, Caron is confident in his game. That quiet confidence has always been there and after adding a legitimate three-point shot to his repertoire he is on the verge of having a big year this season.

While Caron Butler has made it onto this list, most importantly he has made it. When he was headed down a dark, dark path the game swooped in and saved him. Look at him when he plays. Straw in his mouth when the game is on and chewing furiously during time outs. Beyond the jumpers and athleticism you will see the steady determination, intense focus and the unbreakable drive of a man who has seen more than most can imagine and more than he could ever forget. He is a story of survival. And after becoming living proof that some dreams do come true, he will now try to bring life to the Wizards championship aspirations.

Yes! I would rank him behind Billups, but here, he’s right! …first?

  • Tombomb Posted: Sep.30 at 8:07 am
    First

  • andrew Posted: Sep.30 at 8:08 am
And… he kills on NBA Live, every time I play the Wiz. Good spot for him, even thought I expected him to be higher, and therefore, to argue the point. I haven’t had to argue much with these rankings so far. Which is probably good, because I don’t know anything about basketball.

  • James The Balla Posted: Sep.30 at 8:11 am
Good spot i guess, but its still messed up. There are about 5-7 players i would have picked before him that are higher ranked!!

  • Ken Posted: Sep.30 at 8:11 am
If he can stay healthy, this seems like a fair place. I assume Gil is ahead though? I wonder if people would rearrange the ranking if they knew about Gil’s 3rd knee surgery.

  • TADOne Posted: Sep.30 at 8:16 am
I hate the Tough Juice nickname, but I love the mans game. Along with B. Roy and C. Paul, he is one of my favorite young players in the game today. I hope Caron stays healthy because I want to see him wreak havoc over a full 82 games. I vividly remember an image of Caron from the All Star game two years ago grinning from ear to ear and looking like a little kid on Easter who just got a basket full of chocolate. It’s hard not to root for a player like that.

  • Kostas Tsartsaris Posted: Sep.30 at 8:19 am
    @Ken…:no they would not.

  • Bruno Posted: Sep.30 at 8:21 am
    good ranking.
actually, just good choices since de jason kidd fiasco…

  • Eboy Posted: Sep.30 at 8:24 am
I STILL miss this cat in Miami. I think he belongs top 20, but this is a nice spot for him.

  • Tunez Posted: Sep.30 at 8:25 am
Favorite player in the L not wearing a Raptors jersey

  • LAN Posted: Sep.30 at 8:29 am
good ranking… i think jamison should be a lil closer or even above him but

  • LAN Posted: Sep.30 at 8:31 am
^take that back lol i thought you had him in the 30s 29 good ranking for him too

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.30 at 8:40 am
Caron Butler!!! My man! I love this dude. (no homo).
@Eboy- I replied on my latest post to your comment. (suck it Jukai).

  • cultjah Posted: Sep.30 at 8:44 am
butler is the truth 2.0. and playing D doesn’t hurt making minutes in the L.
    he’s underrated.

  • 9th wonder Posted: Sep.30 at 8:44 am
I still miss this cat in LA. When I think about the tandem of KB, Caron, Pau, Bynum, and Odom, I wet my pants because I know that would be some championships coming out the woodwork if Caron had stayed. But I really didn’t appreciate the guy until he left LA and I was wrong for that. The Wiz should be glad they have a dude with the determination of Caron. Dude is a monster.

  • andrew Posted: Sep.30 at 8:45 am
I love this no homo bizness. Reminds me that people in high school are still scared of being thought of as homo. Wattup, hursty.

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Sep.30 at 8:51 am
How can you not love tough juice? About right for Caron although he could easily been 20-24 imo. Nice write up MacKenzie, although I think Caron’s D should have had a bigger mention, seeing as he’s one of the best and most hardnosed defenders in a L where this breed is rare these days.

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Sep.30 at 8:55 am
Hursty; As Andrew pointed out, it’s perfectly okay that you are still insecure about your sexuality, but you can save that “no homo” stuff for when talking to your reflexion in the mirror.

  • My opinion matters Posted: Sep.30 at 8:59 am
Good ranking….he seriously holds the Wiz together…if every stays healthy the wiz are going to do some damage…remember we were first in the east a couple years back when we were healthy…Eddie Jordan coached the all star game…I got a question, any other time besides the lakers and wiz have three people in the top 50?

  • My opinion matters Posted: Sep.30 at 8:59 am

The Pistons do as well. Four, as a matter of fact.

  • Nguni Posted: Sep.30 at 9:14 am
good writing holly! Caron is def where he needs to be. Dude is a baller.

  • J-Bomb Posted: Sep.30 at 9:21 am
Good spot for him i love his game and like ppl have said he plays some solid D. @My Opinion-the Suns Will and the celts aswell as the Pistons…heck they have 4 i think probably more but its too late in aus to do thinking

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.30 at 9:22 am
    @ Opinion- Rockets. Easily.
@Andrew- Just a habit. To protect myself here (I have lots of gay friends). But now it sounds like an excuse lol. I dont have a problem. My neighbours behind me are lesb*ans, while those on my right are two males in their 70’s.
Will Andre Miller make this list? he should have popped up somewhere by now right? I must’ve missed it.

  • J-Bomb Posted: Sep.30 at 9:24 am
i meant probably more teams not more players on the pistons…unless some1 thinks kwame is a top 25 player

  • andrew Posted: Sep.30 at 9:28 am
Hursty - I’m just giving you sh!t bro. It just totally reminds me of high school. That, and there actually are people who post on here that get all weird about ‘the g@ys’. And I was just about to school you on who the fu(k the third rockets player was until I realised Artest is there now. I keep forgetting that.

  • Michael Posted: Sep.30 at 9:30 am
Butler is a great player and I think he deserves this ranking, its a great backstory, but its sad when you think of how many guys who grew up like him, ended up in jail after being long term criminals, yet unfortunately werent 6foot 8 or whatever and insanely talented at playing basketball…there lives probably turned out differently to carons.

  • Michael Posted: Sep.30 at 9:31 am
gotta figure boston might sneak 3 players into this list

  • andrew Posted: Sep.30 at 9:32 am
Michael - why be such a downer? Here we all were, having a fun time, and here you come, getting all socio-political-killjoy on us. Boo!

  • andrew Posted: Sep.30 at 9:33 am
^ = me being sarcastic. Your point is a valid one, Michael, and I guess that’s what makes Caron all the more likable, as an individual, and a basketballer.

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.30 at 9:33 am
Haha andrew. I know mate, Im just taking the p*ss though lol. It is like HS, most junior years though, phobia and sh*t.
    :)

  • Michael Posted: Sep.30 at 9:34 am
andrew, i think its a relevant point, especially when half the write up focused on all the obstacles he has overcome etc…

  • dfrance Posted: Sep.30 at 9:36 am
@Micheal. Is there any doubt? Ray would be the only wild card and he’s better than most of the people ranked ahead of him.
Caron is a really good player though. I moved to MD two years ago and I’ve really had a chance to watch the man’s game evolve and there is not one thing on the court he can’t do. Off the dribble, in the post, from 3 and defense. He does it all!

  • Michael Posted: Sep.30 at 9:37 am
also, its not a negative point about caron, all power to him for maximising his abilities to turn his life around, its an inspirational story. Just made me ponder is all…

  • Michael Posted: Sep.30 at 9:43 am
@dfrance, yeah i know dude, more being jokey. Of course the big 3 will fetaure, although i think people are overrating ray, he is a fairly limited player at this point in his career.

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.30 at 10:01 am
The pistons could ‘hide’ Ben in the last few minutes of a game though. They had/have very good free throw shooters and a lot of offensive variety to look at for a basket. The Cavs had LeBron. Thats all you need though… now they have West, Mo and LeBron. More options offensively.

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.30 at 10:02 am
    dead….

  • overtime Posted: Sep.30 at 10:04 am
So we have entered the top 24, or basically the all-star section?Caron is top 20 in my opinion,no way Gilbert should be higher.

  • andrew Posted: Sep.30 at 10:04 am
Hursty: beat me to it with yr 10:01 comment.

  • Bo Diddly Posted: Sep.30 at 10:10 am
I have Caron a few places higher, with Gilbert not as high…possibly too soon to start doubting Agent Zero? Probably but Caron has a more well rounded game. If Caron is this high, why the hell isn’t Tayshaun?? Is Luol Deng gonna make this list? Andre Miller? Jason Richardson? “Think think about it!!… “Will somebody please remove these cutlerys from me knees” (Flight of the Conchords) - Off topic but still important.

  • Simone S.Y Lawy Posted: Sep.30 at 10:12 am
    he’s better than Gilbert, that’s all i wanna say…

  • Michael Posted: Sep.30 at 10:13 am
Bo, i think its safe to assume, that if you aint seen deng/miller/j-rich yet, you wont be seeing them. Its best not to think about the flaws with this top 50, it makes your head hurt. The last top 50 had darko in it so this one isnt too bad

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.30 at 10:15 am
Yeh, about my 10:01 comment, that was meant for the Cavs season preview. Sorry everyone.

  • Bo Diddly Posted: Sep.30 at 10:15 am
I think you may be right. My own top 50 is however, flawless. In it I would have Josh Smith up next…

  • scott Posted: Sep.30 at 10:34 am
I believe I called this last night.

  • scott Posted: Sep.30 at 10:35 am
@tad….Tough Juice is by far the best nickname in the league.

  • TADOne Posted: Sep.30 at 10:53 am
I personally don’t like it but hey, to each their own.

  • Sparker Posted: Sep.30 at 11:04 am
i’m not questioning placement, but caron is one of the few guys in the league who’s genuinely unstoppable when he gets going. in that area, i’d put him up there with lebron, kobe, amare, ye olde t mac and joe johnson (he has that one-man-team quality too). he can dismantle teams seemingly single-handedly

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.30 at 11:39 am
    Mackenzie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.30 at 11:39 am
    Madam Mackenzie that is

  • B. Long Posted: Sep.30 at 11:45 am
TUFF JUICE!!! Thanks Holly. And yes, don’t all Laker fans wish we could have somehow kept him and still got Pau. Damn.

  • King David Posted: Sep.30 at 11:47 am
    damn right
    he is nasty
    Tough Juice

  • B. Long Posted: Sep.30 at 12:01 pm
My name is orange now. How’d that happen?

  • MeloMan13 Posted: Sep.30 at 12:03 pm
i saw him chewing the straw and i tried it one game but my mom told me to take it out cuz it will give me cancer

  • My opinion matters Posted: Sep.30 at 12:14 pm
My bad for the bad grammar in my last entry..I was in a rush to leave work…but yeah @hursty, your right Rockets easy…the pistons too…and the Celtics…Spurs…denver had three…i definitely was off on that one!!!

  • Keith Posted: Sep.30 at 12:24 pm
Top 20 - no doubt but a great piece Holly.

  • DP Posted: Sep.30 at 12:47 pm
oh B. long! you have joined the old cats! I’m shocked.

  • garron Posted: Sep.30 at 1:02 pm
to be fair, paul peirce is also in that class. he just played a lot less minutes. caron is sick though. his first year in washington where he broke out, i had him 6th round in fantasy draft and he was statistically a top 10 player. you forget his shooting percentages are off the charts, and for a guy who handles the ball that much (when gil’s out) doesn’t turn the ball over much either.

  • mike Posted: Sep.30 at 1:11 pm
    U-C-O-N-N

  • dfrance Posted: Sep.30 at 1:22 pm
@B.Long when u put a website in, it makes you orange.

  • scott Posted: Sep.30 at 1:47 pm
Three Washington players in the top 30 and they are a fringe playoff team in the east.

  • what Posted: Sep.30 at 1:48 pm
Good ranking, this guy is a pimp and I always wondered why he slipped all the way to #10 in that draft.

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.30 at 2:39 pm
Scott: I’ve already commented on that.

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.30 at 3:08 pm
    Caron Butler>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>anyone else so far

  • G Diddy Posted: Sep.30 at 3:29 pm
He should be ranked much higher.

  • PTown$$ Posted: Sep.30 at 3:42 pm
Good player. Ranking him ahead of B Roy is a joke. Style over substance.

  • B. Long Posted: Sep.30 at 4:03 pm
dfrance doesn’t understand how to self market his work smoothly.

  • Kostas Tsartsaris Posted: Sep.30 at 4:14 pm
their team is a fringe one cause 2 of them are slightly overated (not Caron though, good ranking for him, on of the best players in the league has some Scottie Pippen in him) they are not good defenders(Caron is the best one from the three) their supporting cast is kinda weak and they are almost never healthy all of them at the same time.

  • TADOne Posted: Sep.30 at 4:27 pm
The thing with the Wizards is that they could get healthy and get hot and end up as like the 2nd or 3rd team in the east. They could also not get Gil back until mid-Jan, rely too much on Stevenson and crew, and be scrapping for the last playoff spot in April. Either/or wouldn’t surprise me.

  • Kostas Tsartsaris Posted: Sep.30 at 4:33 pm
@flux…: Miro and Kandinsky(ok,he was born in Russia you got a point here…) are currently over my laptop(both painters, don’t lose time to google them)and usually i prefer to listen mozart or Bach.sorry if it sounds somewhat elite this to you but i haven’t read somewhere that you got to listen only hip-hop or gangsta rap(i hope i called them correct,i learned most of them through SLAM,…)if you like bball…this one is one of my favorites: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=df-eLzao63I the only thing Russian (almost) in my place at the moment is a girl from Moldova (i won’t give you details cause definitely you won’t believe…)but this is a good thing even for you i guess (ok, i suspect some things but it doesn’t really matter, everyone has the right to choose what prefers…)

  • Kostas Tsartsaris Posted: Sep.30 at 4:48 pm
    Fiorentina you lucky punks….go Steaua!!!!

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.30 at 6:17 pm
As good as Caron is, this might be a bit high for him. When he’s healthy though, he’s top 20 no doubt.

  • USA 4 LIFE Posted: Sep.30 at 7:09 pm
i love him but Telfair should be here

  • USA 4 LIFE Posted: Sep.30 at 7:11 pm
ey Kostas Tsartasis u want a real video wach this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkDGSzK_x9I

  • Moose Posted: Sep.30 at 7:48 pm
    USA 4 LIFE, no.

  • Luigi Posted: Sep.30 at 8:06 pm
i believe arenas should be on this list.. then SLAM will explain why hes up there. [games b4 his injury] then we will still disagree while i think Butler is the best team on my fav wizards. he shuda gotten top 20 atleast. or atleast ahead of gil. like Arenas-18
    Butler-17

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.30 at 10:06 pm
Okay, just for the record, the best NBA nickname is Betrayal Skull Dude.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.30 at 10:08 pm
Man, the thing with Caron Butler is, I never know where to place him. He isn’t a top tier superstar yet, while he manages to be better than others in his “class”. I can’t explain it. Still, there are a few players on this list so far I’d rather have than him.

  • darth Sternicus Posted: Sep.30 at 10:37 pm
Caron is the good twin of Ron Artest

  • David Posted: Oct.1 at 1:33 am
Hey wait a second - didn’t this site say that lists are bourgeois?

  • D.A. Posted: Oct.1 at 2:24 am
I just had a quick review of the Draft Class of 2002…. I now remember why he was so pissed to go at 10…. wow.
