Was it a foul? Or can we move on?

Not again…

By Sam Rubenstein

The Lakers outplayed the Spurs, who looked tired at home. Somehow the game came down to one final shot. You saw what happened. The non-decision was Joey Crawford’s, who famously clashed with Pop in the previous round, and once ejected Tim Duncan for looking at him (seriously). Do we have another controversy/conspiracy?

    no foul

  • j rich Posted: May.28 at 8:51 am
    first!!!

  • Benoit Benjamin Posted: May.28 at 8:51 am
The spurs were classy enough not to arge the call. Why should we?

  • James The Balla Posted: May.28 at 8:53 am
It was a bit of a foul … but the whole game was officiated terrible for the Lakers … they were lucky to pull out the win. KOBE MVP … Lakers in 5!!!

  • James The Balla Posted: May.28 at 8:54 am
52 shots and only 1 foul shot … and D Fish’s shot hit the rim which they never gave credit for!!!

  • James The Balla Posted: May.28 at 8:55 am
Kobe took 52 shots in San Antonio and only took 1 foul shot … the refs were either bought, or Manu is good on his knees when he flopping around down there.

  • Sam Rubenstein Posted: May.28 at 8:56 am
I don’t want this to be another controversy, but I feel like it’s something people will want to talk about. Don’t worry… we will have the Laker fan perspectives on it as the day unfolds, should be entertaining.

  • James The Balla Posted: May.28 at 8:58 am
O, and only ONE foul was called while Bruce Bowen was piggy backing Kobe the whole night …

  • riggs Posted: May.28 at 9:02 am
its not a foul, because a foul wasnt called when the spurs were trying to intentional kobe during the last seconds, so it has to remain consistent. everything after the 53 second mark was BS, especially the fact that lamar odom blocked that layup.

  • James The Balla Posted: May.28 at 9:06 am
    That too!

  • Eboy Posted: May.28 at 9:09 am
    “Instant Karma’s gonna get you”

  • James The Balla Posted: May.28 at 9:11 am
    Whats that mean Eboy?

  • Tariq Posted: May.28 at 9:19 am
It WAS a foul, but it wasn’t in the act of shooting. So it shouldn’t have been three free throws. But Fisher definitely made contact, no question. Although I don’t think you can put the loss on that alone. It happens. Lamar’s fifth foul was a charge, for example.

  • Tariq Posted: May.28 at 9:20 am
Or should have been a charge, I mean.

  • Eboy Posted: May.28 at 9:21 am
Beside’s being a great John Lennon song line, it was meant to shed light on some of the things the Spurs have gotten away with in years past, particularly anything related to Bruce Bowen’s defense and Robert Horry’s well placed hip checks. Karma’s a bit*h, I think it caught the Spurs last night. And it was a foul, for the uninformed or the dense.

  • solito Posted: May.28 at 9:28 am
Simple rule: Players decide the game, not refs. Barry decided to pumpfake, and got fouled during the dribble. Great no-call! If the contact would have been in the shooting motion it would have been called. Barry nevertheless had a chance to make the shot. Missed… The End - and yes, karma is the proverbial b..ch!

  • TADOne Posted: May.28 at 9:43 am
This is obviously an Eboy imposter commenting.

  • Rubens Borges Posted: May.28 at 9:53 am
yeah karma… and still kobe can get to the finals… (roll eyes)

  • BETCATS Posted: May.28 at 9:57 am
    no

  • Eboy Posted: May.28 at 10:10 am
No, it’s me, TAD. I just came to the realitization that after last years horrid Finals, the Sternbot needed to fill the slots with two teams with the most bandwagon fans this season to push the ratings. Plus I’m happy for Marcel, Myles, Bodie, Holly, jay, etc. They are true fans to the end, regardless of my dislike for Kobe.

  • BETCATS Posted: May.28 at 10:16 am
well if it was Manu or Tony Parker who got fouled, the call would have been made. For any team, which bench/trash player(s) expect any call in clutch time? Bones gets a call? Get the fu(k outta here, thats like saying Zaza Pachulia or Ricky Davis would get that type of call in that situation. Garbage/Bench player get no big calls, that is why you get the ball to your SUPERSTAR in the clutch.

  • TADOne Posted: May.28 at 10:19 am
Eboy must have had a relaxing holiday weekend. That is good to know. Regardless, the Lakers should finish business Thursday night at Staples. I’m more focused on my boys tonight, obviously.

  • BETCATS Posted: May.28 at 10:22 am
Tad, i am not sure if you guys can ever beat KG when he goes into lockdown mode.

  • ciolkstar Posted: May.28 at 10:27 am
That game sucked. We, The Spurs, sucked. Barry should’ve went staright up once Fisher left his feet, or atleast exaggerated the contact and throw his arms up. Manu disappeared. I just hope Popp admits that we need to get younger this offseason. The league is getting younger and younger and our big 3 is on the downswing. I just wish we had a bench like Detroit’s instead of a retirement home.

  • PatRick Posted: May.28 at 10:41 am
I agree with solito, it was a foul but non shooting. I wonder how many team fouls they had then, hmmm. but the ball did hit the rim on LA’s possesion before that so maybe they shouldn’t have even had a chance. good karma call Eboy.

  • TADOne Posted: May.28 at 10:45 am
BET: I would agree with you, but we DID beat KG in game 2 when he had a big game. Just saying…

  • Myles Brown Posted: May.28 at 10:52 am
It wasnt a foul when Rip did it to Bron in the ECF last year and it wasnt a foul when Bownen did it to Bron in the Finals. Its not a foul now. Get over it.

  • Eboy Posted: May.28 at 10:59 am
Geez….you would have thought the Lakers LOST the game.

  • Ben Payne Posted: May.28 at 11:06 am
the one chance that a spur has a prime opportunity to flop to potentially win a game….and doesn’t take it
    AWESOME

  • Bishop1405 Posted: May.28 at 11:25 am
Brent Barry said it best - “That is not a foul in the Western Conference Finals”

  • caeubona Posted: May.28 at 11:29 am
it was definitely a foul, but it being a no-call just cancelled out the two bad calls the officials made earlier in the game… the shot that fish made hit the rim before bouncing of cheap shot bob, and had the correct call been made, it would have given the lakers a new shot clock, and which they of course would dribble out, forcing the spurs to foul. also, the goal tending call on lamar was also wrong, as replays clearly showed that he got the ball before it hit the glass. so, in this case, two wrongs make a right.

  • Simone Lawy Posted: May.28 at 11:44 am
karma, duncan 5 step dunk? kobe get’s only one call in 2 night under bruce bowen? odom goaltend? fisher DIDN’T hit the rim? spurs will no even get close to lakers if they wasn’t have the home court adv’…

  • DP Posted: May.28 at 11:45 am
It doesn’t freakin matter because at the end of the day if the Joey had made that call and Barry would have made those 3 free throws, we would be talking about how the Lakers got screwed. so it doesn’t matter. The Spurs just need to be focused on their last game of the season. play wit it.

  • DP Posted: May.28 at 11:47 am
Yeah Simone is right. The lakers didn’t get any damn calls last night and every time Timmy even attempted to shoot it was a foul. Bruce Bowen was out of line trying to take Kobe’s manhood from him and the refs just let that act continue the whole night. Ray Ray would have stuck that mothaf*cker.

  • thesubwayconnection Posted: May.28 at 12:25 pm
They missed a ton of calls. A TON. That last one included.

  • RV Posted: May.28 at 12:29 pm
i’m not sure how anyone can say it wasn’t a foul, forget consistency, there’s no rule that say refs must be consistent, it was a foul (non shooting). However, in real time i dont think the contact was that evident. Usually the shooter is knocked back a bit, but Barry was focused on getting the shot so he kept going forward

  • Dma Posted: May.28 at 1:57 pm
foul. 2 shots. overtime. then more bullsh*t would have ensued. i am 100% convinced that lakers/celtics final has been in the making since day one. i hate you david stern. so much right now.

  • B. Long Posted: May.28 at 2:13 pm
If Greg Popivich says it wasn’t a foul, it’s probably not a foul. Just saying….

  • Chukaz Posted: May.28 at 2:36 pm
Bones is a b*tch and that’s why he didn’t get the foul. Besides, why didn’t he jump INTO Fisher? Is he stupid? By the way, Fisher’s jumper hit the rim and the shot clock didn’t reset. They’re even. Actually they up 3-1.

  • kHulaHula Posted: May.28 at 3:04 pm
I hate how everyone’s saying there was no foul…if the shoe was on the other foot, everyone would be screaming about how the Lakers were fouled and didn’t get the call!!!

  • Tommy Patron Posted: May.28 at 3:07 pm
Watching Inside the NBA last night made me sick. To hear those guys (especially Reggie)talking about “He didn’t sell it enough”, and “I hate to see the refs decide the game.”, tells us what’s wrong with the NBA. Why should players be worried about “selling” anything”? The ref didn’t decide to bite on the fake and jump into someone, DFish did.

  • Co Co Posted: May.28 at 4:26 pm
I don’t know if anyone else has addressed this because I haven’t read all the comments, but the precedent has been set for this type of thing for as long as any of us can remember. Until they start officiating the 12th man like they officiate the Superstar then none of this will change. Too many times we hear people say “he’s a superstar so he’s going to get that call” and no one even bats an eyelash in disbelief. So there’s no need to get worked up over it now. Brent Barry is not Timmy, Tony or Gino so hell he might not even get that call in the second quarter if we’re being honest. It is what it is. The Lakers won and they’ll likely be moving on. There have been more egregious calls and no calls throughout the history of the league and chances are very high that there will be more to come. So relax.

  • TADOne Posted: May.28 at 4:36 pm
    Co Co: No.

  • Co Co Posted: May.28 at 4:38 pm
    Haha! No what Tad?

  • TADOne Posted: May.28 at 4:52 pm
    I won’t relax!

  • TADOne Posted: May.28 at 4:54 pm
You know me Co Co; I could care less about this series really, i’m more focused on the game tonight. Of course, I know i’m by myself on that.

  • BETCATS Posted: May.28 at 5:09 pm
look brohams, let me tell you something. Brent Barry aint sh!t. Plus, i watched the video of that shot about 100000000000000000 times and saw the game, and it was clear that brent wasnt even shooting, from most angles it looked like he was flinging the ball at the backboard. He only got fouled on the fake and that wouldve been 2 free throw not no 3. So take that m@sterbation whistle in a bag sh!t somewhere else.

  • Tommy Patron Posted: May.28 at 5:39 pm
BETCATS-You WISH you could be Brent Barry.

    BETCATS…….Touche`
    EBOY……….Thanks
TADOne……..Go Detroit…? Spurs as far as my biased reasoning goes, should never ever get a call ever again.
    ^_^

  • Dacre Posted: May.28 at 8:48 pm
If he was reggie miller, it would have been a call. If he was Rip Hamilton it would have been a call…if he was tim duncan,….he would have made the shot..? if it was a reg. season game he would have got the call…
it was a make up-non call, perhaps at too crucial a situation for it. but nontheless, considering how the past two games have played out it came down to it….ONE thing you realise….forget joey crawford: NO ONE ELSE that had a whistle blew it.

  • marcgar Posted: May.29 at 8:15 am
every body is crying that kobe didnt take any free throws but you cant even name one time he got fouled bowen and the spurs were letting him shoot rather then fouling him. get over it. and chuck really pissed me off by saying the ref doesnt want to make the decision on the game by making that call. hey idiot he made the decision on te game by not making that call. if the ref didnt want to make the decision on the game he should have called it gave him the two free throws and if he makes them let the teams decide in overtime
