Sacramento Kings: the teenage sitcom

Coach Bill Fuller will turn these wacky kids around

By Sam Rubenstein

The Sacramento Kings are interviewing Reggie Theus for the head coaching job. Is he qualified to handle the delicate situation known as Ron Artest? Can he make a winner out of a squad that fell apart and underachieved? Sure, why not. He’s gotten more out of lesser squads in the past. Like this one. Hang Time! In a way, this is the perfect move. The Sacramento Kings are in need of more team unity, and who better to get them there than a man who had to put up with a pushy cheerleader, a female star on a men’s team, lots of stereotypes… that’s kind of like getting Ron Ron to stay on earth, right?

Did I write this post just so that we can enjoy a stupid little video? Yes sir.

I actually used to enjoy this show in High School.

    Hi Sam

  • Sesa Posted: May.18 at 12:41 pm
    first and second!

  • the brown guy Posted: May.18 at 12:42 pm
    that video…

  • the brown guy Posted: May.18 at 12:42 pm
    (third?)

  • Sesa Posted: May.18 at 12:45 pm
Ouch! Reggie Theus was a movie star…

  • Homie Posted: May.18 at 12:45 pm
Hang time should be remembered just for introducing the world to Anthony Anderson. And the chick was cute!

  • Sesa Posted: May.18 at 12:47 pm
Young Zo still looks like needs a straight jacket, just like current Zo.

  • JZ Posted: May.18 at 12:48 pm
wow…if they hire reggie, they should definitely use the sitcom intro as their pre-game video (just change the faces on the pics…haha…put ron ron’s face on the cheerleader body!)

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: May.18 at 12:48 pm
Didn’t the Bobcats interview Reggie as well? Movin’ on up!

  • Ryan Jones Posted: May.18 at 12:49 pm
A poor man’s Saved by the Bell. Get that sh*t out of here, Sam.

  • Sesa Posted: May.18 at 12:51 pm
I’ve simulated Spurs-Suns matchup on my NBA 2k7. The score was a Spurs win 103-99 over Suns. Tim Duncan getting 14 points and 18 rebounds. Ginobili had 18 points.
Steve Nash had 23 points and 11 assist while STAT had 31 points and 8 rebounds.
Let’s just hope I’m wrong, I’m very happy if I am wrong.
And why are we talking about the Kings?

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: May.18 at 12:59 pm
Because we’re already talking about the Spurs and the Suns in EVERY OTHER POST ON THIS ENTIRE WEBSITE. There are other things occurring in the NBA.

  • Dennard Posted: May.18 at 12:59 pm
I remember that show too. I remember one episode when Marques Johnson played Anthony Anderson’s dad, and he told him that he had gotten too fat to be a good basketball player.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: May.18 at 1:00 pm
Even if Reggie gets the Kings job, I’m thinking he won’t have to deal with Ron Artest.

  • Alex Posted: May.18 at 1:03 pm
Ron Artest needs to get traded to the Warriors… We’ll give you Al Harrington for him and have starting line up of Davis, J Rich, Artest, S Jax and Biedrinus…

  • Alex Posted: May.18 at 1:05 pm
He’s a Tru Warrier after all..

  • Joel O's Posted: May.18 at 1:05 pm
Artest might be moved? Who’ll take him though, with his track record of the last few years? We’re still waiting for him to get his act together and become the defensive monstrosity he once was…

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: May.18 at 1:09 pm
I think Sac is at least gonna look into trading him. Obviously things haven’t worked out. Hell, I’d blow the whole thing up and offer up Bibby and Brad Miller as well.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: May.18 at 1:29 pm
“Because we’re already talking about the Spurs and the Suns in EVERY OTHER POST ON THIS ENTIRE WEBSITE.” Not on mine we’re not.

  • Michael Posted: May.18 at 1:40 pm
He won’t have to deal with Ron Arrest. He’ll be dealing with Kwame Brown. I gaurantee it.

  • jbn74sb Posted: May.18 at 1:42 pm
Slamonline appears to be as burnt out on basketball and over these playoffs as I am. It doesn’t usually happen for me until the finals…

  • Steve O Posted: May.18 at 1:43 pm
Hang Time! was a classic, Saved By the Bell it was not but it did comprise a great saturday morning run that NBC used to put up. Theus had success at New Mexico State with a bunch of transfers why couldn’t he do it with the Kings?

  • Sam Rubenstein Posted: May.18 at 1:51 pm
Every Saturday morning show from back then was a poor man’s Saved by the Bell. This one happened to be about basketball played on 6 foot rims.
The NBA playoffs are a marathon not a sprint. We’re just pacing ourselves. Hopefully.

  • Derms Posted: May.18 at 1:54 pm
That show was ill and that chick was hot.

  • Slobodan Chutzpah Posted: May.18 at 1:55 pm
That poor man’s Dustin Diamond completely destroyed ‘Zo one-on-one! Very lifelike, I must say.

  • ALX8725 Posted: May.18 at 1:57 pm
is there any chance Artest gets waived by Sactown?

  • Bryant Reeves Posted: May.18 at 2:16 pm
I used to watch that show too. One thing that always killed me is that there is only 6 or 7 people on the team! How are you supposed to practice, let alone play a game, with 6 or 7 players?!?

  • nic Posted: May.18 at 2:22 pm
practice? is big country talking about … practice? i mean, if he was talking about a game … but … hes talking about … practice..?

  • Ryan Jones Posted: May.18 at 2:29 pm
In fairness, bodie, your playoffs were over a couple weeks ago…
Sorry, just playing man. All these inbreds from Kentucky have me riled up, and you left me a hanging curve. Had to swing.

  • Sparker Posted: May.18 at 2:49 pm
reggie has been a legend to me and my ball playing buddies for years, mostly because of this bit of wisdom he dropped in an interview: “there’s a good time, there’s a god time and there’s a good time. as long as you’re having one of the three, you’re all right.”

  • bdiddy Posted: May.18 at 3:07 pm
what the ? that has got to be ‘triple single’ mike dunleavy jr on that team on hang time. that is him right? the guy before reggie on the credits

  • jbn74sb Posted: May.18 at 3:09 pm
Ryan - Who is your team again?

  • Nadav Mor Posted: May.18 at 3:46 pm
Reggie got with Juanita before EmJay.

  • Michael Posted: May.18 at 3:51 pm
I remember waking up every saturday and turning on NBC so i could watch Hang Time, City Guys, and that one show about the foster home Kids.

  • Max Airington Posted: May.18 at 4:17 pm
Whatever happened to Saturday morning cartoons? Or after school cartoons? Michael shouldn’t have had to grow up watching such tripe.

  • Boing Dynasty Posted: May.18 at 5:27 pm
Hangin’ with Mr Cooper > Hang Time

  • bdiddy Posted: May.18 at 5:29 pm
and we know kobe was into moesha

  • Billy Blanks Posted: May.18 at 5:31 pm
Yeah i grew up watching cartoons. I wasn’t really into the whole high school sitcoms. But nowadays the cartoons and sitcoms are just terrible.

  • Dennard Posted: May.18 at 5:58 pm
What happened to cartoons? They don’t even show Tom & Jerry on regular TV anymore. What da hell is the world coming to?

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: May.18 at 7:12 pm
Tom & Jerry was racist against cats.

  • Kevin Wilson Posted: May.18 at 7:41 pm
Sorry to be a dick, but I’m going to go ahead and talk about Reggie Theus. Speaking as somebody in New Mexico, I can say Theus has brought some legitimacy to New Mexico State. Theus’ success had a lot to do with the University of New Mexico canning Ritchie McKay and breaking the bank for Steve Alford. The Lobos can’t stand the idea of being second in the state, and Theus’ ability to recruit people to Las Cruces has made that a possibility.

  • Max Airington Posted: May.18 at 8:02 pm
Tom & Jerry actually was racist. The old mammy character in some of the earlier episodes was just horrible. But I still love that duck.

  • snyper48 Posted: May.19 at 3:11 am
Tom & Jerry was THE best cartoon ever made by mankind

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: May.20 at 5:49 pm
So I guess Sam Vincent is the leading candidate for the Charlotte job. It would be nice to see some new blood in the NBA head coaching ranks, that’s for sure.

  • Danny W UK Posted: May.21 at 6:04 am
ALX8725, can’t see the Kings waiving Ron Ron, he just has too much value, and the race for Lottery picks is over. They should have done it when he beat his wife, or hold on to him and trade him. But who’d take him? I’m thinking that they’ll have to package him up with someone else to get shot of him. Artest and Bibby for Smush and Kwame? If I were in charge I’d ship out anyone, including KMart, he’s good, therefore he has value, but I feel his Stats are inflated like the first year in an expansion team. Not neccessarily someone to build a team around.
Remember Corliss Williamson averaged 17 points for the Kings back in the day.

  • [...] The second NBA story is much happier. Reggie Theus will coach the Sacramento Kings. This possibility was floated about a month ago and I wrote a quick post on why it was so pleasing. Those reasons all hold true (okay one reason: HA-AAANG TIIIIIME! HAAA-AAAANG TII-IIIME!!!), but now it’s even better because it means Larry Brown won’t get the job and his NBA/NCAA/ABA resume couldn’t beat an ex-children’s sitcom star who coached at New Mexico State. Hey Larry, every time you beg another team for a job and get rejected, an angel gets its wings. That’s not a nice thing to say, and I assign blame to the ‘05-’06 Knicks season for it. This is sweet justice. [...]
