Mark Cuban Is Giddy Over the Euro Exodus

by Marcel Mutoni

Logic would dictate that most NBA team owners are, ahem, a little worried about the ever-growing possibility of losing some of their key players to international teams.

Mark Cuban, though, is not like most owners (in any sport for that matter.) He not only welcomes the foreign competition; the billionaire Mavs owner actually relishes it.

Cuban sees the Euro exodus as a fantastic thing, not just for the teams in the Euroleague, but for the players, the NBA, and generally anyone else with a vested interest in the pro game. From his personal blog:

“If we lose a few players, thats not a bad thing. in fact a couple All Stars going over there is a GREAT GREAT thing.”

[…]

“Then of course we could create our own World Cup type tournament every 4 years. All of this could open the door to create more NBA owned competition. I’m not saying it would be easy or automatic. Quite a few parties that dont always see eye to eye would have to come to agreement, But the timing for all of that is right and its an amazing opportunity for players, leagues and teams alike.”

In the post, Mark Cuban is looking at this whole thing with a big-picture perspective, and perhaps that’s the best approach to take here. And his ideas are certainly worth listening to.

I’m just curious to know if he’d think it a GREAT GREAT thing if Dirk left Dallas and went back home at the end of his current deal.

i bet hes hoping some euro team will take josh howard off his hands. i bet josh is hoping there is a team in amsterdam that needs a sf.

Darksaber says:
I’d rather you be giddy in your attempts to get Dirk and Josh some much needed Backcourt / frontcourt help in the quest for Dallas’s first Championship, CUBES!

TADOne says:
I’m sure the big picture for him is buying an NBA team overseas when/if the NBA expands into global competition.

H to the Izzo says:
Mark Cuban not only owns the rights to Dirk as a basketball player, but also owns Dirk the person.

Darksaber says:
Like HE needs another team to micromanage.

fiba should give the nba champion a spot in the euroleague each year then that way they can see our players without trying to steal them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aug.8 at 1:18 pm

Darksaber says:
Mr whiteman? That suggestion has merit.

Mark Cuban is both the best and worst thing that ever happened to the Dallas Mavericks.

just wait until Dirk decides he’d be willing to try Euro ball as well and then Cuban will be giddyless.

Yann Blavec says:
Tarzan !! You’re so funny !! Josh Howard to Amsterdam !! I hadn’t thought of it !! Too bad they don’t have any good basket-ball team …
don’t you have an expression in english that says that where there is a smoke there is fire ?

Aug.8 at 1:36 pm

B. Long says:
@RV: The women’s leagues don’t pay as much over there, so Dirk’s not going. 8)

B. Long says:
And yes I know they actually do but it didn’t work for my joke.

a_whiteman says:
i love how people hate on dirk but he is a top 10 player in the league just because he had one bad playoff series

Aug.8 at 1:45 pm

Mo Charlo says:
I never, ever thought I’d say this, but I agree with Cubes. Also, call David Stern with whiteman’s idea. Also, whiteman, Dirk is not top ten, and he’s had three bad playoff series in a row. In your face.

Aug.8 at 1:47 pm

B. Long says:
@a-whiteman:LMAO, you can’t be serious, right? One bad playoff series? You did watch last years asswhooping by the Hornets, right? You did see David West treat him like Magic Don Juan treats girls named Candy and Lexus, right?

Aug.8 at 1:59 pm

a_whiteman says:
06 playoffs dirk was the best player to not get washed by the refs the man slammed all over the san antonio sterns to win that series then disposed of phoenix to get to the finals and have his hole team tragically disapear in an unexplained phenomenon between the end of game 2 and the start of game 3. Golden state fine he played like a woman i ll give you that one. BUT, you cannot say he played weak last year cuz he was clearly the best player in a dallas uniform against the hornets as his 26.8 12 and 4 showed. And, you cant really blame that series loss on him because last time i checked it was old man kidd guarding the real mvp

“Then of course we could create our own World Cup type tournament every 4 years.” Like, the FIBA World Cup?

Aug.8 at 2:01 pm

a_whiteman says:
if you go and check the numbers dirks career playoff averages are ridiculous before 07 his lowest playoff average was 23.4 and hes averaged a double double every playoffs. name 5 pfs in the league better then dirk

Aug.8 at 2:03 pm

B. Long says:
@a-whiteman:True on the J-kidd guarding CP3 part. Have fun next year, Jason.

Aug.8 at 2:05 pm

B. Long says:
KG,Tim Duncan, Pau Gasol, Chris Bosh, Elton Brand.

Aug.8 at 2:07 pm

a_whiteman says:
gasol bosh and brand are NOT better then dirk the only one out of that 3 you can argue for is brand but you cant even do that cuz the man has only made it to the playoffs 1 time

Aug.8 at 2:15 pm

Yann Blavec says:
Pau Gasol isn’t in any way better than Dirk. Put Dirk in LA instead of Gasol… Come on…

Aug.8 at 2:17 pm

a_whiteman says:
the only 3 pfs you can put ahead of dirk are kg duncan and amare but bosh is closing in

Aug.8 at 2:19 pm

B. Long says:
How the hell did I leave Amare off the list! I was thinking of him as a center I guess.

Aug.8 at 2:20 pm

B. Long says:
Dirk should play the 3.

Aug.8 at 2:20 pm

Yann Blavec says:
and Duncan has always played alongside pfs since D-Rob left.L Doesn’t that mean he’s a center !?

I hate Cubes but i agree with him here. Also, euro teams have had a history of defaulting on players contracts. 9not paying0 i think that would definitely be a possibility if someone signs a NBA superstar to a 2-3 year deal for 100 million plus, especially in turbulent economic times or if they miscalculate the increased revenues said player would generate…I’m just sayin.
I’m also not a Dirk fan but putting Pau ahead of him is the dumbest thing B.Long has ever posted here, and that’s sayin something.

Aug.8 at 7:45 pm

Young Chris MP3 says:
Al Jefferson is better than Dirk too. As is Rasheed Wallace. Elton Brand is a million times better than Dirk. Carlos Boozer… The list goes on.

Aug.8 at 10:15 pm

John D says:
^ None of those guys you just listed are better than Dirk.

Aug.9 at 1:23 am

Darksaber says:
Ahhh, the Dirk haters in full effect. Mr. Whiteman put up a good fight, but you’ll never win those IDIOTEN over son. Good thing you don’t have to, since Dirk kicks ALL the above mentioned PF’s butts when he plays them. Brand, and Bosh better than Dirk? Questionable. JEFFERSON and BOOZER? Reaaaaally? The hate is so bad, fools are even bringing up unrealistic comparisons. Dirk is Top 10 All World. Deal with it haters.

TalkAboutSport says:
He won’t be giddy for too long when he sees Dirk interested in moving out and going to Germany to play basketball. Wow and to
YOUNGCHRISPAUL - how are those players better thank Dirk? No offense that is just blasphemy. Gasol and Brand are not better than Dirk by the way. Anyways check out my blog.

AC says:
Dirk is Dirk. His game is wildly different than CB4, Amare, TD, KG,Brand, booze or any of the other comparisons… It’s just where he hits on a particular team. Someone up top said he should play the 3… speaks to his versatility, since he already plays the 4 and spots of 5. I’m not really a fan, but the man is a nightmare to match up against.
