Wizards Offer Big Money to Arenas; Warriors Interested?

by Marcel Mutoni

Gilbert Arenas has a decision to make: The Wizards have offered him a huge deal, something in the neighborhood of 125-127$ million.

Take it or leave it, Gil.

The Washington Wizards yesterday offered unrestricted free agent guard Gilbert Arenas a six-year contract that would pay him between $125 million and $127 million, the maximum amount allowed under the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement, multiple sources said.

That’s a lot of money, and all things considered, Arenas would be nuts to turn it down. And Washington isn’t the only team willing to throw big money at Agent Zero either.

The free agency period opened early yesterday with Arenas receiving an offer from the Golden State Warriors — his former team — for a five-year deal that would pay him just less than $100 million. But it did not appear yesterday that Arenas was seriously contemplating the offer.

You’re gonna have to do a lot better than that, Warriors! Or, you know, just hand over the keys to Monta Ellis.

Arenas with the Wizards have a better chance of making the playoffs every year than the Warriors. The West is getting crazy.

It’s better for Arenas AND the Ws if he doesn’t come out here. But Monta’s no PG. Wish he was. A PG makes the Warriors like last year’s Sacramento: a good bad team.

I really don’t see how Gil is worth $100 million over 5 years to GState but Baron wasn’t worth $65 mil over 5 years…to be worth a MAX you really should do something besides score.

I can’t wait for GSW to low-ball Monta and have him skip town… Sure will make not extending he and B Diddy last season look a little foolish…

ciolkstar: who is worth his money in the NBA? All those Kapono guys are getting paid big bucks, and every mediocre 7-footer too. That’s how it goes. Players are comparing each other’s salaries, thinking “if he’s making that kind of money, I’m at least …. dollars worth” it’s the market which is screwed up. I’m not complaining, I hope that every player gets paid, everybody has the right to earn big bucks. If you’re in the NBA you can get that kind of cash. However, it does screw some things up, because guys like Andrew Bynum (or just his agent) think he’s 80 mill worth. Not yet, Mountain Drew, not yet.
You gotta play to get paid. Like Deron Williams said the other day: “I want to earn every dollar that I get”, or Tim Duncan who didn’t want to get “maxed” so San Antonio could get more good players.

Diesel says:
This is what I don’t understand about the Wizards…they’ve had this team for the last 6 years (sub caron for hghes) and have pretty much done nothing. This team will not compete for a chip anytime soon. Jamison is getting old. Why commit so much money when your team obviously needs to make changes in order to push for a chip. If nothing else they’ll need to find a replacement for jamison once he starts lagging in about 2 years. These 2 contracts for Jamison and Arenas that they signed is keeping the same mediocre team in the short run and taking away any tradeable assets in the long run.

Jul.2 at 12:53 pm

Gerard Himself says:
Diesel, I don’t agree with that. If they are able to keep Arenas, you have to look at the bench. I think they are one player away from being an elite team in the east. Maybe a better big man, or a decent wing from the bench. They also have to keep Roger Mason jr., that dude’s got talent.

Do we even know if his knees still work? Wiz may end up like Orlando when they signed Grant Hill. Even if he’s perfectly healthy, that seems like a lot of money, especially if there’s no one else out there that can pay that much.

Rasheedionics says:
Let’s be real. Arenas is not worth all that money. He’s glorified Allan Houston. He’ll be doing Warriors a favor if he doesn’t sign with them. I agree with Diesel, Wizards are not going anywhere with the current group of players. And Gerard, there are a lot of teams “one player away” from being really good. It’s not that easy to find that “one player”. They can’t afford no Josh Smith, Elton Brand or Okafor and anything less than that wouldn’t make a difference.

Jul.2 at 2:03 pm

Diesel says:
@Gerard, I second what Rash has to say. How are you going to get that one extra player when you just tied up most of your money in 2 players that are good enough to make you competitive, but not good enough to win it all for you. They’ve got a decent bench, but no one that would be attractive trade bait. You also need to take into account injury history and age. I see Washingotn making a final push this year, then getting passed up in the following years by Orlando, Chicago, Atlanta, Phila..and all the other young, building teams.

John E. Sanford says:
What does it matter who is worth what in professional sports? The owners have the money to pay it, so more power to the players to get as much as they can. At the end of the day the real Max players are the owners.

Jul.2 at 2:24 pm

Rasheedionics says:
Sanford, the points is not if the owners can afford to pay the players the max, but whether you’re getting the value for your money. The reason it’s not smart to tie so much money in Arenas because Wizards can probably get a better player than him for that much money in the long run or may be 2 or 3 good players for the same amount. Good teams always look long term, not just “right now”.

Jul.2 at 7:40 pm

Emphasis says:
The thing about the Wizards is that they are DEFINITELY capable of competing for a championship next year if Arenas re-signs. There is no doubt in my mind that Arenas, Butler, and Jamison form the best trio in the NBA right now (when Gil’s healthy). The Wizards have two big holes to fill right now: a post scorer and a shooter (don’t try and convince me Antonio Daniels or Roger Mason is a shooter, or Arenas, he’s a scorer). As far a a post scorer goes, Brand would have been a great pick-up, but that’s not gonna happen. D.C. seems to be waiting for Andray Blatche to develop into a big-time scorer, which could take another couple years, or never happen. For the time being, Brendan Haywood has to carry the load inside. A shooter would also help the Wizards greatly. Somebody like Jason Kapono could fit in well in D.C. An option I see would be to package either Songaila or Pecherov with DeShawn Stevenson and see what you can get as far as either a post scorer or a shooter. But rest assured, the Wizards even with these two big holes still have a chance to compete for a title; if the Big Three bring it every night and role players step up, the Wizards are very tough to beat on any night (just ask Boston, the Wiz took 3/4 from them this season).

Jul.2 at 9:40 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Arenas, Butler and Jamison are better than Pierce, Allen and Garnett? I don’t know, I just don’t see the Wizards as currently constructed as a championship team. Are they going to be better than Boston? Detroit? Cleveland? Yes, they haven’t all been healthy at the same time, but don’t you have to take that into consideration?

Jul.2 at 9:49 pm

Hursty says:
The Wizards beat the Celtics @ the celtics without Gil while the C’s had the big 3. They beat Cleveland during the reg. season, not sure about Detroit. But the reg. doesnt really mean sh*t anymore. ask the mavs. then ask the celtics.

With Baron verbally agreeing to go to clippers, warriors need a very good point guard to fill Barons shoes and Arenas may well be that guy.

if cleveland could get him i think he’d go for that, more shots and a better chance at a win, never know wat will hapen wit bron on ure team.
maybe miami? hahaha all hell would break loose, Wade, Marion, Beasley and Arenas??
Or maybe new york, they love guards who shoot too much

Tom says:
Arenas may not be a max player on court, but who ever cared about the Wizards before he came here (the MJ years excluded)? Gilbert puts fans in the seats puts the team on TV. He gives the team a lot more buzz than they have had in years. He makes alot of money for the franchise. That said….I wish they would give Brendan Haywood the boot and get a big man who can actually play.
