No Brotherly Love for Elton in L.A.; Brand to Sign With Philly

by Marcel Mutoni

That startling sound you just heard? It’s the yelp of pure, unadulterated joy from the long-suffering hoop die hards in the great city of Philadelphia. Well, that or Baron Davis’s head slamming against a brick wall.

It appears as though the Sixers are well on their way back to respectability, as Elton Brand has pulled a shocker on the Clippers by reportedly agreeing to a deal with the Sixers.

EB’s (now) former hometown paper has the details:

Elton Brand has reached a verbal agreement to sign a multiyear contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to an NBA source who requested anonymity because he is not authorized to speak on player movements.

The deal is believed to be in the $80-million range and expected to span five years.

Yowza! Hey, Baron, you got a little over an hour to pull a Boozer on the Clip Show. Your former team is also getting Corey Maggette. It’s not too late to change your mind is it?

Much more on all of this madness tomorrow, obviously.

Philly is officially nasty looking now. The L is getting better again.

Jul.8 at 11:04 pm

BETCATS says:
i never thought the Clippers could become any more pathetic. They lost their #1 guy, their #2 guy (who never even ever played for them), lost the best SF since Darius Miles, and wasted a lottery pick on Shaun Livingston (who isnt comming back either). Seattle Clippers? Seattle Clippersonics?

Fvcking Elton Brand man.

Jul.8 at 11:34 pm

Lang Whitaker says:
I love this…mostly because it means the Hawks will probably keep Josh Smith.

Jul.8 at 11:37 pm

Double R says:
Lang, I have it on good authority (from a source close to the situation) that much like LeBron in 2010, Josh Smith will retire this year. Sorry.

Jul.8 at 11:38 pm

Co-sign Lang

Jul.8 at 11:40 pm

BETCATS says:
what about iggy? think of the iggy?

Jul.8 at 11:51 pm

swift says:
Don’t worry; the sixers are going to sign Iggy. They’ve got about $10M in cap space left over due to the cap holds on Iggy ($8M) and Lou-Will (~$2M) and they’re allowed to go over the cap to sign their own players. It looks like both will be signed without the sixers so much as sniffing luxury tax territory. I wonder what they’ll do with their midlevel?

Jul.9 at 12:02 am

airs says:
i just hope all those sportswriters don’t bash him for this. clips weren’t going anywhere if he stayed anyways. good for EB

Jul.9 at 12:06 am

Double R says:
Airs, you know they will, especially Bill Plaschke

Jul.9 at 12:21 am

Talented says:
I like Philly tho. Thas a good fit for Elton Philly is lookin up now.

Jul.9 at 12:32 am

RIOT says:
so all of a subben brand goes to the horrible 76ers and all you guys think they are going places get real really. BTW AI days are numbered in philly believe that. they were tryin to trade this guy not so long ago. so who do the 76ers have? EB and AI thats it period!!! hear this they will NOT, i repeat WILL NOT make the playoffs.. !!!

Jul.9 at 12:40 am

matt604 says:
RIOT are you dumb? The sixers came together well at the end of the season and even put a first-round scare into the Pistons. They have a solid core, and EB is a great addition. They’ll be in the playoffs for sure if EB really does sign.

Jul.9 at 12:40 am

todd says:
excuse me riot, they aren`t in the western conference. thanks.

Jul.9 at 12:48 am

Pedro says:
Brand and Maggette, - no Clipper team spirit or loyalty. With Davis the Clips could have been much improved and more exciting to watch. Now without Brand & Maggette the Clips are the Pits. Terrible general management, Elgin. How could ownership let them get away, - both of them????? There are now about two Clipper fans left in LA.

Jul.9 at 12:50 am

Pedro says:
Take off the last sentence.

Jul.9 at 1:04 am

K Holls says:
And the Clippers are back at square 1………this is punishment for stealing them from Buffalo!!!

Jul.9 at 1:11 am

razorblade says:
baron should just back out of the deal…hes not getting the max dollars and the clippers are going nowhere

Jul.9 at 1:25 am

niQ says:
oh how lucky philly is…

Jul.9 at 1:29 am

TripleDouble says:
Yeah, do they have the $$ to resign Iggy still?

Jul.9 at 1:35 am

Bunch Chizz says:
Alls I gotta say, is that without a dizzity doubt the sixers will be the second best team in da east next year and a c-rious shot at winning it all next year. Who wit me holla at a bull

Jul.9 at 1:38 am

d.Y. says:
Did we win something?

Jul.9 at 1:41 am

Krishan says:
Ahahaha, I knew it! Good fer you elton. Where is khalid btw?

Jul.9 at 1:42 am

don’t celebrate yet Lang….Josh in a Clippers uniform can happen….

Jul.9 at 1:43 am

Donn says:
NBA: Where your dream of playing in your hometown can turn into a nightmare happens.

Jul.9 at 1:46 am

Krishan says:
Does RIOT rhyme with IDIOT? They looked GREAT at the second half of last season, and gave detroit the sweats in the playoffs. If they resign iggy (IF!), they’ll be one of the top teams in the east. That is, if brand stays healthy.

Jul.9 at 2:01 am

RV says:
I guess the warriors panicked and threw the bank at maggette, what are they going to do with him when they already have Stephen jax, matt barnes, Belinelli AND Azubuike? they better have a trade proposal on the table for a PG

Jul.9 at 2:05 am

RV says:
Wait, y’all do realize the only way the sixers can sign Brand is if they create cap room by trading Carney and Booth to memphis and/or minny? I dont think a trade has been agreed to yet, the sixers just think they can make it happen

Jul.9 at 2:17 am

RV says:
ok, apparently the sixers have worked out the trade already to Minnesota and there’s a possibility the warriors and bulls are working on a deal to bring Hinrich to GS.

Jul.9 at 2:39 am

Clockwork says:
Will Baron even report to training camp? Love this move for the sixers, hope they regain some relevance in the East this year.

Jul.9 at 2:45 am

LAN says:
B Diddy will bring this sh*t together forreal, gordon is his monta, thornton is his s jax, no1 is his al har (who is not much of a pf cept sick shooter)n kaman is better than biedrins ya’ll c he in sam position hed b in at goldenstate cept he’s playin in his hometown!

Jul.9 at 4:25 am

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Baron, tell me how my ass tastes? Sincerly yours Elton.

Jul.9 at 5:35 am

nothin personal says:
I just hate the 76’s, I always did, no reason in particular (well, I hated AI shenanigans, but I think it’s mostly the way writers from philly bash everything and everyone). Brand wasn’t a good fit for Baron, but this is ugly. I hope they can get someone to sign with them, they got around 12 millions a year to spend (I think).

Jul.9 at 6:42 am

GGG says:
Fark me…didnt think that would honestly happen…next think you know, Ronaldo will end up at Real Madrid…on 2nd thoughts, Man U no better.

Jul.9 at 7:23 am

Oh, Rion! says:
I completely agree with Langford. I sincerely hope that this means that Josh Smith will stay in Atlanta since the 76ers will not have the money to give him what he’s worth. We would miss our Atlanta home-grown star and slam dunk champion! Rise up and shock the world, Hawks!

Jul.9 at 7:31 am

Roy says:
B-Diddy perhaps made the worst career move ever… the clips will have to find a good replacement for Elton Brand asap if they still want to contend with the loaded western conference…

Jul.9 at 7:36 am

Silky Slim says:
First it was Carlos Boozer. Now its Elton Brand. Is this a Duke University thing? Is this a Coach K thing?

Jul.9 at 8:10 am

TADOne says:
HaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Jul.9 at 8:11 am

TADOne says:
Oh, and a great move for Philly if he stays healthy.

Jul.9 at 8:15 am

Moose says:
no chances for LA, now

Jul.9 at 9:13 am

Tom says:
Daaaamn…..Clips can’t do anything right….so who do they throw all that cash at now? Or do they become the Nets of the west and wait for 2010?

Jul.9 at 9:14 am

Tom says:
Philly is gonna have the best frontcourt in the L now……Brand & Dalembert……wow!

Jul.9 at 9:39 am

TADOne says:
The words ‘Dalembert’ and ‘best frontcourt’ should never be mentioned in the same sentence.

Jul.9 at 9:39 am

TADOne says:
Does Philly have enough left to keep Iggy now?

Jul.9 at 9:42 am

Hursty says:
I imagine they would keep Iggy, otherwise Brand would have been far less likely to sign (if it happens). The pieces in Clipperland are better than those in Philly without Iguodala.

Khalid Salaam says:
FYI: This pleases me.

Jul.9 at 10:30 am

Myles Brown says:
Congrats. And Im glad that Minnesota was able to contribute to another franchise reaching their dreams.

Jul.9 at 11:30 am

adbphilly says:
im in love with ed stefanski. And with Brand now in this wonderful city of philadelphia, iggys gonna wanna stay. Contenders. RUN WITH US! the whole eastern conference is gonna fear coming into the Wachovia Center next year. Better get the paramedics!

Jul.9 at 11:42 am

adbphilly says:
I say now we look at ben gordon to be that outside sniper eddie said he was looking for.

Jul.9 at 11:47 am

Z says:
Gordon dominates the ball… Sixers should look for someone like… Korver.

Jul.9 at 12:20 pm

albie1kenobi says:
amazing development. this is proving to be one hell of a summer.

Jul.9 at 2:23 pm

Diogo says:
Still doesn’t make the Sixers contenders. But he and Miller did play together for like two-seasons right? Perhaps some chemistry will help.

Jul.9 at 5:51 pm

Anon02 says:
Here we go with the Philly fans getting all excited talking about the Sixers supposidly being a contender again..the Sixers (although looked decent at the end of the year) are still a average team at best. As much as I like Elton, he has never lead a team anywhere but maybe the playoffs. This move does not make the Sixers a contender and only solves one of their multible problems, give me a break.

Jul.9 at 6:11 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
anon02= hateful clippers fan

Jul.9 at 8:34 pm

TJCLANCY says:
i just hope that this doesnt turn out to be another huge signing of a once great veteran ala glenn robinson, chris webber. i dont think i could survive that again as a philly fan. and now that weve signed Elton, are we done goin after Josh Childress and Josh Smith?

Jul.9 at 9:10 pm
