Kwame Back in Purple & Gold?

by Marcel Mutoni

You thought that he was gone for good, didn’t you Laker fans? Well, think again.

Noted Laker historian Roland Lazenby penned a fascinating article about the Purple & Gold, shedding light on some of the seemingly never-ending drama taking place inside the team’s front-office.

And according to Lazenby’s sources, the Lakers are considering bringing back the much-maligned Kwame Brown.

From HoopsHype:

Faced with a “weird” situation with center Andrew Bynum, the Los Angeles Lakers are toying with the thought of bringing back Kwame Brown, a free agent.

No, this is not a joke.

While it’s no secret that the Lakers are in desperate need of inside defense and rebounding (the Celtics made sure of that this past June), is Kwame the answer? That was a rhetorical question; don’t waste your time answering it.

Unless, of course, the idea here is to convince Brown to just play on one end of the court (the defensive one, where his hands of stone aren’t too big an issue.) In which case, make the deal Mr. Kupchak.

man. that would be funny. what with players going back and forth these days.

Aaron S says:
NO!!!!! Well actually, Kwame could bring some physicality off the bench, and it’s not like he’d be playing nearly as much as he was in his last stint. Plus, if they can get him cheap, it wouldn’t be a bad signing. It could provide good frontcourt depth with Mihm behind Bynum (and Gasol for that matter).

If Kwame Brown is the answer to…..anything….then the problem is a hell of a lot worse than first feared.

HIDE THE CAKE!

Jul.25 at 12:17 pm

Aaron S says:
If he comes cheap, then it wouldn’t be TOO bad.. I’m not saying I’d prefer it, but it wouldn’t be TOO bad. As the third center of a bench, I think Kwame could actually be somewhat useful. But no, he’s not coming back. There’s no way in hell Lakers management will bring him back, especially how he was basically booed out of town and a lot of fans seemed to be more happy he was gone than for the acquisitionsteal of Gasol.

as a lakers fan, when i read the headline i was hoping he would just be signing with the sparks

Jukai says:
Kwame Brown may be the best known worst player ever

Jul.25 at 12:57 pm

SeanB says:
Aaron S id like to believe in your logic that a cheap kwame would be a help on the defensive end but the problem is once the ball goes down on offense he becomes a walking heap of utter embarrassment. now if we could sub him out on the way up the floor like hockey, then we are onto somethin

Jul.25 at 12:57 pm

DP says:
There not sure about Bynum? oh sh*t here we go. Please get luol! LO has toyed with my feelings too much these past three years. But Kwame? are they serious? Is Darko a free agent?

Jul.25 at 1:06 pm

TADOne says:
You know you’ve hit rock bottom when Darko is looked at as a better option.

Jul.25 at 1:07 pm

James aka the Artist Formerly Known as Krayzie Bone says:
I would do this deal just to make the Gasol trade look more obscene

Jul.25 at 1:12 pm

Aaron S says:
SeanB you must be out of your mind, but that would be great. I’m still wondering where Kwame pulled that 12.9 ppg and 6.6 rpg playoff series vs. Phoenix from where he was actually able to do something on offense, albeit it was in a losing effort. Seriously though, where did that come from?

Jul.25 at 1:12 pm

Yknot says:
If Kwame wants to get paid he should go to the betcats. I’m sure Jordan will give him more free money.

Jul.25 at 1:29 pm

Michael says:
I like it. Kwame was a really good defensive player with the lakers. He wouldn’t have to worry about offense and he would only play about ten minutes top. Just as long as no one passes him the ball while he’s in the game.

Jul.25 at 1:31 pm

BETCATS says:
well, the only think that keeps kwame from being as good as he could be is lack of motvation. If he gets a second chance to prove himself it could be another genius move by the Lakers.

Jul.25 at 1:33 pm

SeanB says:
Aaron S have you ever heard of the saying the even the sun shines on a dogs ass every now and then

Jul.25 at 1:36 pm

B. Long says:
Mitch has been considering this since the trade happened so it doesn’t really suprise me. As long as it’s league minimum, go for it.

Krummy Brown? Like a disease.

Jul.25 at 1:41 pm

Franchise Baller says:
Bring him backkkk i say he still has the potential he jsut needs the right situation. Maybe coming off the bench will help

Jul.25 at 1:43 pm

BETCATS says:
well if it doesnt work out, at least the Yankees are going to sign Barry Bonds which would eclipse this as the worst signing of the year

Jul.25 at 1:48 pm

B. Long says:
@Betcats: Has the Evil Empire made that offical? Damn…

Jul.25 at 1:50 pm

BETCATS says:
not yet but it is probaly gonna happen. ESPN’s people are gettin all wet in the pants region just talking about it. And it is not ‘wet’ wet its ‘weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet’ wet.

Jul.25 at 2:21 pm

Mo Charlo says:
I was talking with a buddy of mine, and we ended up with a theory that we are as good as Kwame Brown (first, we’re good, and big, so shut up). Our reasoning was that if we were put in an NBA game, we could produce similar results as Kwame. 4 points, 2 boards in 19 minutes? No sweat. Seriously, what the f*ck did the Grizz get for Pau? DAMMIT!

Jul.25 at 2:24 pm

BETCATS says:
Kwame just needs somebody to get under his skin to annoy the hell out of him until he gets motivation. He has the tools but once he gets ready to use them he falls asleep. He just needs somebody to get him motivated and all pumped up and he will be fine

Jul.25 at 2:51 pm

Joel O's says:
Oh my goodness. Sonovabitch.

Jul.25 at 2:55 pm

jbn74sb says:
I am all for this. Kwame is a serious upgrade over Mbenga, and is a very solid defensive player. Just don’t ask him to catch.

Jul.25 at 3:02 pm

Joel O's says:
Well truth be told, Kwame is much better off as a guy coming off the bench. As a number one pick, he’s the biggest bust ever. But as a seventh or eighth guy? If seen in that light, he’s a serviceable big man. As a starter he’s trash. Or I’m in denial.

Jul.25 at 3:03 pm

Joel O's says:
Well either way it’ll be funny to see Kobe’s hissy fits whenever Kwame botches trying to catch a slow bounce pass at him.

Jul.25 at 3:05 pm

Brandon Hoffman says:
If Kwame is willing to accept the veteran’s minimum, I’m all for bringing him back to LA. He’s a big body and he’s solid in the locker room. But if I were contemplating signing Kwame, I’d have to be certain that Mihm was going to make a complete recovery. Kwame plays solid defense, but he gives you next nothing on offense.

Jul.25 at 3:13 pm

akimana says:
Maybe they can trade him for Rudy Gay this time?

Jul.25 at 3:25 pm

mLev says:
as a true lakers fan, i was actually sad to see kwame go. i’m glad that he’ll be back. he’s got the heart and passion that our team lacks with kobe.

I just threw up a little in my mouth

Jul.25 at 3:52 pm

Ken H. says:
with ronny gone, i actually wouldnt mind bringing kwame back. Kwame was a good defender and rebounder, and hes not afraid to bang with the bigger players. If you play him with bynum or gasol, u wont have to worry about inside scoring as much, just dont have him out there by himself as the only inside scoring option. Bring back Kwame! I kinda miss the big oaf.

Jul.25 at 5:03 pm

ciolkstar says:
the obvious/immediate reaction is: Are you kidding me?
But really he’s probably still a better option than Chris Mihm. Sign him cheap and once/if he does earn some minutes there will be absolutely no pressure on him. I think handling the pressure of being a player who has a lot expected of him at an early age was Kwame’s biggest failure.

Jul.25 at 5:04 pm

ciolkstar says:
He also might have the worst hands in the HISTORY of the NBA. But really, how important are hands in basketball?

Jul.25 at 8:57 pm

Joel O's says:
You know what, with the unfortunate and shockingly soft way the Laker frontline played in the Finals, it really isn’t a stretch to say Kwame would’ve down better than Radmanovic or even Pau in being a physical presence down low. Remember in those exciting LA-PHX series a few years back, where he was part of a big Laker frontline that gave the Suns lots of problems inside?

Jul.25 at 10:31 pm

Arek says:
LOL if the Lakers get Kwame back that means they pretty much got Gasol for literally..NOTHING

Jul.25 at 10:35 pm

flosho says:
Couldn’t pick it any better with the aids comparison, good one Diogo! “Kwame Brown is like AIDS: It might look good right now, but you never know what kind of sh*t your into until it’s too late.” Either be safe or Have Aids, take your pick!

Jul.25 at 10:40 pm

flosho says:
honestly Kwame and his tiny hands can’t catch a cold. Plus you really want the one who’s been called a flamming f*****?? ahem…

Wait, when does Bynum come back? ‘Cuz they really don’t need the African American Leo Rautins on their team if they have Andrew Bynum. Then again, even if a team doesn’t have Bynum, they still don’t need the African American Leo Rautins.

I predicted this move when they first traded Kwame, personally I’m dissapointed in His effort at times but when he applies himself with all that athleticism he can really make a difference off the bench. To all of my friends, I told you so..
