Josh Childress To Greece?

by Lang Whitaker

One last post before the Return of Mutoni. According to Yahoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sports, Josh Childress is seriously considering an offer to play in Greece. I emailed back and forth with Josh on Friday night, but he didn’t mention anything about his current contract stuff. Interesting stuff…

And here’s my favorite Josh Childress photo for you…

That has to be from the draft. He fills out a suit like I do, so I can’t make fun of him.

Childress to Greece wouldn’t be a good look.. i wonder how bad the contract talks are going right now for this to even come up.. anyways, random question that i’m hoping someone can answer - why isn’t Beasley on the US Select squad? did he turn it down or was he jus never invited? i’ve seen/heard 0 mention of this guy in terms of that..

underdog says:
Well, I would like to see him in the Pistons or the Hawks, but if the greeks pay him some big time money, than he should sign there.

Jul.21 at 8:14 am

RedRum says:
Childress has signed with Olympiakos. He visited athens to see whether he likes it and signed his contract. Just to let you know, this 20mil is tax free (taxes are paid by the team) as well as paid accommodation and a car. so it is the equivalent of a 12 mill per year contract in the US (if not more…) The depreciation of the dollar makes it possible for europe to start hitting on top notch NBA talent. This should be fun!

Ryan Jones says:
RedRum hits on the truth. This sh*t will happen more and more. Basic economic reality — tanking dollar, the tax situation. Granted, not all NBA players are going to be brave and/or open-minded enough to uproot and move overseas (Josh is a Stanford dude, so you know he’s more well-rounded then most), but he won’t be the last one, either. David Stern can court the international fanbase all he wants, but until he starts paying motherf*ckers in Euros, he’s got a potential problem.

Jukai says:
Uh, can you find an article that says he signed? I’m only seeing articles that is saying he’s considering it.

Jul.21 at 9:28 am

Co Co says:
I hope he does this!!!!

Jul.21 at 9:29 am

Jukai says:
Also, it’s not really just the money and the location thing… it’s much more than that in Childress’ situation. Josh, right now, is unable to leave the Hawks. As a restricted free agent, a team has to offer Childress money, which probably wont be fantastic, and then the Hawks just match it and sign him up for another one or two years. What if Josh really doesn’t like the Hawks? He’s stuck there, and if he demands a trade his stock INSTANTLY goes down. But aha! Here comes the Europe thing. No contract buy-outs, no chance to outbid the other team… He can just get up and leave to Europe, making the situation very bad.

Jul.21 at 9:29 am

Jukai says:
Co Co, what’s with the hate for the Hawks?

Jul.21 at 9:35 am

halkias says:
Dont talk about European basketball like its whack…Its in a very good level not only for teams, but for players as well..Of course its not in the same level as NBA but the fact that more and more european players play in the NBA means a lot to me..And of course a very good NBA player will get a lot of money in the Europe too…

Jul.21 at 9:39 am

Co Co says:
No hate for the Hawks. But they need a rude awakening considering their business practices. They should have taken care of both Josh’s last summer. They still haven’t made a real effort to re-sign either one. I don’t want either of the Josh’s to leave, but if the Hawks organization doesn’t appreciate them then they need to go elsewhere. They swore since the end of last season that re-signing both of the Josh’s was the number one priority and they’d match any offers. Okay so no offers were made, but they still haven’t made a real effort to sign either of them. The Josh’s need to do what they need to do.

Jul.21 at 9:50 am

RedRum says:
Jukai, the news is on Greek newpapers, unless you know Greek you would not understand it… Josh is in Greece already to sign his contract. Now if for some reason’s things fall out in the last minute I cannot say, but Josh is in Athens right now. Also look for high-school stars to start skipping college for a year or 2 in Europe. It makes sense. The money and level of support these players will receive does not compare with college. Imagine this: at least 400.000 contract (tax free, house, car, all in top luxury and almost all expenses paid). Players get to practise twice per day with level of coaching being higher than most colleges. Any family members that follow them are taken care off my the team. Things are looking bad for the NBA at the moment… I am wondering which top NBA player will make the move. There are teams here that can afford 15 mill dollar contracts, easily (tax free…)

Jul.21 at 10:03 am

Jukai says:
the NBA really should have some sort of huge buy-out clause in these guys contracts like Europe does, so at leas the club gets some money.

Jul.21 at 10:13 am

Co Co says:
Haha RedRum.

Jul.21 at 10:21 am

Jukai says:
Sorry RedRum, a LOT of websites are reporting he’s in Greece but none of them have said he’s signed. He very well may, but I’m reading an article that was written twenty minutes ago about Childress in Greece talking things over, weighing his options. Nothing is on paper yet.

Jul.21 at 10:23 am

Jukai says:
Apparently the Hawks situation is worse than I thought. There’s some ramblings about how he asked the Hawks to sign-and-trade him cause he was really unhappy about the contract situation, and they refused. He REALLY doesn’t want to play for Atlanta and this is his way out.

Jul.21 at 10:31 am

halkias says:
Jukai recently a representer from olympiakos was in the u.s. and came to an agreement with Josh..He came in Greece in order to see the city of Athens and the lifestyle since he is close to come in Greece to live..He is signing any time now..Thats what i read..Dont get me wrong…

B. Long says:
This is not a good trend. First Brandon and now this?

Jul.21 at 10:43 am

Jukai says:
I don’t really put this in the same catagory, B. Long.

Jul.21 at 10:48 am

Co Co says:
Josh has to do what he has to do. He can’t just sit back and wait for the Hawks to make a move. He needs to be proactive. Its funny I NEVER hear so much concern when the European players are coming to America. No one cares about how they’ll adjust and all the issues people have with Brandon. It’s like the European guys are smart enough to handle coming to America, but the American players aren’t smart enough to make the transition abroad.

Jul.21 at 10:49 am

Jukai says:
Anyway, I can’t find anything of Josh deffinitely going to Greece. He told a reporter is was greater than 50/50 he’d sign with Olympiakos, but that’s about it. Not saying that I don’t think he’s going to do it, not so, I think he’ll be playing in Europe next season. I think the reason though, is because Atlanta wont do jack to stop this from happening.

Jul.21 at 10:50 am

Jukai says:
Co Co, great point. People never gave a crap about Darko and the struggles he musta had coming into America so young and totally failing adjusting to the rules of the game and the culture. Never really thought of that…

It begins. I think Josh will adjust to living in Greece just fine. Eat some Gyros, vacation in Cypress… he may never come back. Co Co, props to you for not being mad at a cat from your team for making a good decision.

Jul.21 at 11:18 am

Co Co says:
The Hawks ownership is inept and that’s putting it lightly. No one in their right mind would wait around to see what they’re going to do…. I hope he does this in the worst way. I hope Josh Smith follows him……

Why won’t he take the Spurs’ MLE????

Jul.21 at 11:39 am

RedRum says:
Jukai, from what I have read is that he sent a signed contract, with the provision to withdraw in case he did not like Athens after his visit (very unlikely, Athens is amazing). Once he sees the house and car he is given, I would be very suprised if he withdrew… Olympiakos has a leasing deal with most luxury car brands, and his house will be in one of the most expensive areas in Athens (unless he decides to stay in a 5 star hotel). On another note, top european teams now have budgets comparable to NBA teams (close to the 55mill dollar range). I am waiting to see what the Olympiakos rival (Panathinaikos) will do… they brought Dominic Wilkins in the 90s… Maybe the Lebron sweepstakes next year could include a euro-team??? CCSK for example has almost unlimited badget, I can see them easily pulling a 25 mil per year deal. Well… maybe not lebron, but unless Stern imposes a buy-out to euro teams, I see some big name skipping to europe soon. no Co Co, not Marbury… ;)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
Didn’t La Bomba get a huge deal earlier this year, like 15-20 mill?
At this pace the Europeans will out of money pretty soon themselves. Josh needs to find a new team but not a Euro squad. While maintaining a great FG% (about 57%, I think) last year he’s really not a strong jump shooter either, he’ll definitely need to play the 3 there and try to get his buckets on the inside/midrange. He should only sign a 2 year deal if he signs anything at all.

Go get that money, J. Chill. F the NBA.

Jul.21 at 12:34 pm

d.Y. says:
If LeBron really wants to be that millionaire, he could go to Leband with 20-30 mil in Euros, get an even more international presence (and endorsements), and then be the biggest free agent signing ever when he comes back to the NBA after 3 years… globalization is a b* tch isn’t it?

Jul.21 at 12:35 pm

RedRum says:
Who got next?? my money is on Artest and Melo. Again, Starbury is not a top NBA player…

Jul.21 at 12:45 pm

RedRum says:
I actually think that Euro teams will be going after any free agent in the NBA from now on… Deng, Gordon, Iguodala, etc will be getting some crazy offers next year… If a euro team can offer Josh essentially a 12 mill contract per year, I cannot see why Deng would turn a 15 mil offer from a euro team. Remember, in europe rivarly between teams is crazy, and owners do not see their teams as businesses but as obsessions, they are the team’s biggest fans and can splash out for making themselves happy and rubbing it on each other. Let me give you an example. In football (soccer for you yanks… ;) ) Real Madrid is offering 160 million dollars in cash to Manchester United for one player, Christian Ronaldo, and ManU did not accept it!!!! (that is not considering players’ wages…)Imagine the Knicks offering the Cavs 160 million for Lebron…

So Redrum, you’re saying that European soccer (fubol for you Euros) is like American Baseball? Cool. Also, once again, not saying Childress ain’t signing, but I don’t think your sources were correct, sir.

Jul.21 at 12:52 pm

Jukai says:
Underdog, there’s nothing we can go. We can only hope European basketball will slowly begin to get exciting with the influx of NBA players so we can watch that too.

Jul.21 at 2:00 pm

Chuck Daddy says:
Regarding the exodus of Euro players back to the Continent, I believe it in large part has to do with the weakness of the dollar against the euro. Face it sports fans the greenback ain’t what it used to be. Also there has been a significent decline in Euro players coming into the NBA the last couple of years. I’m interested in seeing what that 20k that the Greeks are offering J Chills is in euros or dollars. If it’s euros……See Ya!

Jul.21 at 2:41 pm

Redrum says:
Jukai, it is quite possible. But this is what my friends from Athens tell me (from inside the team that is to sign him). That his people have sent a signed contract with the clause that if after visit (he is now in Athens in Olympiakos offices) he does not like the environment he can drop the contract. Maybe I am wrong, let me know if you know more. Oh, it is football for europe, Futbol for south america, and soccer for you crazy Yanks!
