Antawn Jamison re-signs, 4 years, $50 mill

By Sam Rubenstein

When the Wizards were on their way out of the playoffs last season, it seemed like a turning point for their organization to many. Do they blow it up and start over, or bring back their talent at high prices?

High prices!

“It just came down to the fact that I felt comfortable here and Mr. Pollin expressed that he was going to re-sign me and we were able to negotiate a good deal for both sides,” said Jamison, who earned $16.3 million last season in the final year of a contract he signed with Golden State in 2001. “When you have both parties willing to compromise and get something done, you can get something done.”

Oh Antawn, so level-headed, so mature, so understanding. The quiet, productive performer on this team with a few other more, shall we say, attention seeking members.

Good luck getting that Gilbert contract done!

But in all seriousness, the Wizards should be as competitive as ever in the East. You know, a round or two into the playoffs, not really sure what the big picture goal is.

Without acquiring a quality big man, once again they’re not going anywhere. And when was the last time Arenas manages to stay healthy for long stretch of time. I dont know why Wizards are just settling for mediocrity. They start to remind me of my NY Knicks.

Don’t worry about Agent Zero the Oklahoma City Cyclones should wrap him up pretty quickly.

gilbert arenas will never be a winner, they should try to sign and trade him for brand or davis who’d make them a better team, esp brand so arenas can go to his natural home, the clippers who don’t give a crap about winning, just makin money

Not hating on Antawn cause hes a great guy and a good ball player but 50 mil? WTF?

TADOne says:
Ok, i’ve never understood all the Gil hate. I’m mean sure, the guy speaks his mind. Everyone usually complains when athletes give PC answers, but then complain that Gil talks too much. I just don’t buy that Gil is a loser either. When the Wiz were completely healthy in the first half of the ‘06 season, Washington had the leagues best record. At that time, Gil was argued as one of the best in the game. What changed besides the obvious knee injury? I’ll be happy when Gil comes back 100% and makes everyone eat their words.

i beg to differ, Rasheed and Jukai. it’s impossible to simply SETTLE for that level of atrocity, one must STRIVE for it.

whats wrong with 50 mil? He deserves it as consistent as he is. He’s been with the wiz 4 yrs, 20 pts and about 9 boards every one of those yrs. Who else gets at least 20 and 9? Dwight, TD, Al J, Boozer, Amare, KG.

Nick says:
RV, you made a glaring, 7′6″ tall omission from your list. I expect better.

Jul.1 at 3:24 pm

Rasheedionics says:
RV: Gil only plays about half a regular season and usually his body all broken down by the time playoffs starts. Wizards played much better as a team when he was out of the lineup. If I’m Wizards, I would let him go. He’s a great scorer. That’s about it.

Luigi says:
okay if Jamison makes 50 mill. for 4 yrs. so thats basicaly 50 divided by 4.. hmm about 12.5 mill per yr. about a good amount for a quality starter. sure hes 32 but the man made an all star apperance last yr. gotta reward him -go wiz. Zero 2 Hero is back

Jul.1 at 3:45 pm

TADOne says:
Bob Dob: Ok, and the Lakers will be a dynasty if Bynum comes back 100%. Amare had the same questions about his knee. Any questions now? My whole point is that people just seem to hate on Gil, but the hate is kind of unwarranted. I’m no Gil apologist, but the man can play.

TADOne - Gil’s a potential injury risk, and to me seems like the second coming of Steve Francis, hence me saying he’s not worth the max

Jul.1 at 3:59 pm

underdog says:
I don’t hate neither Gil nor Bynum, but sign anybody for long years (plus fog big money) after a serious (knee) injury is a big risk for any franchise. Penny anyone? Grant Hill? Allan Huston?

They should have sign-and-traded both of them.

LOL, i apologize nick, i was looking at last year’s stats and i guess he didn’t play enough games to be listed under the leaders

Jul.1 at 7:23 pm

RV says:
@Rasheed: i’m not sure if your comment was meant for someone else? It seems you’re saying Gil is just a scorer and should be let go, right? but I was talking about Jamison, not gil

BETCATS says:
getting kicked out of the playoffs by the cavs year in and year out + 50 million to keep the team intact to go ride that rollercoaster agian = not good idea.

How funny will this be when Gil doesn’t resign? ANSWER: Hysterical!

Russ Bengtson says:
I’m really confused by what the Wizards are doing. Jamison, Arenas and Butler all appear to be good guys and terrific basketball players. But are any of them capable of being the No. 1 option on a championship-level team? I don’t think so. It’s hard for me to imagine how they’ll be able to topple the Celtics, the Pistons or even the Cavs. It’s a lot of money to spend for first-and-outs.

not a bad lineup, Davis/Mobley/Thomas/Brand/Kaman…doesn’t look like Maggette will stick around now, and they already have 4 pgs so that has to be taken care of also.

Dacre says:
RUSS…I agree. BUT….you imagine them going to any other team…become a 2nd or 3rd option there and all of a sudden it looks like a glaring mistake on their part for not resigning them…? It’s a case of an NBA playing wanting WAY more than they are worth…and getting it too.
Enter conversational pieces on Jon Koncak, Bryant Reeves, Juwan Howard, Allan Houston, Anderson Varajao, Shawn Bradley, Luc Longley…etc.

Jul.3 at 6:50 am

Slobodan Chutzpah says:
Dacre: how exactly would it start seeming like a glaring mistake if these guys went to another team and made them mediocre? The goal is to win a title, and Washington just ain’t sniffing one with the Artist who Never Saw a Circus Shot He Didn’t Like, Zero and Tuff Juice as their best players, even if those guys are 100%. Simple as that, and I agree with Russ. I don’t think it makes any sense on the Wizards part.

Jul.3 at 6:55 am

Slobodan Chutzpah says:
By the by, IMO Jamison is an Odom at best, and probably not even as tough as him when the playoffs roll around. I’m not all that sure he could even be the third option on a championship team. Maybe the fourth. I’m just saying…
