Another Brawl in Detroit

by Marcel Mutoni

And this time, Ron Artest had nothing to do with it!

The LA Sparks and Detroit Shock played earlier in Motown tonight, and things got a little , ahem, heated. Candace Parker took exception to some rough play underneath the boards, and after shoving a Plenette Pierson of the Shock to the floor, all hell broke loose.

Here’s the wild video.

The craziest part of the whole mess is assistant coach Rick Mahorn’s shove of Lisa Leslie. Dude actually knocked her to the floor. You stay classy, Rick!

Once a Bad Boy, always a Bad Boy I suppose. Naturally, head coach Bill Laimbeer came to his former teammate’s defense, and called him a “peacemaker”. Nice try, Bill.

Oh, by the way, the Sparks won the game by three points. If you care about that sort of thing, that is.

(Thanks to Holly for being a night owl, and for passing along the vid.)

WOW. That’s pretty terrible. Mahorn should be suspended, at the very least. I’m interested to see what develops from this. I feel for the knee-injury -> wheelchair development.

Who says the WNBA isn’t intense.I don’t necessarily watch the games, but regardless it wasn’t surprising that they stood up for each other.I don’t think Candace planned for the “push” to turn into anything more, but it did.The reaction of the Shock is what started this in my opinion.I definately give mad respect to everyone that tried to stop the fight.Bonita Ford was holding back a team mate and was hurt. Then, the icing on the cake. As if Detroit basketball doesn’t have a bad rep already: the bad boys(Laimbeer,Isaiah etc.),and the Artest brawl; former Piston bad boy himself pushes a woman down. That woman was one of the most respected women of the WNBA, Lisa Leslie, and what makes it worse is the fact that she was doing nothing wrong at the time.Laimbeer’s comments about Mahorn being a “peacemaker” just kill me, come on whats next will he call Isaiah a good coach, Rodman normal, or himself handsome.Brawls happen, but this one seemed unnecessary, and pitiful on Mahorn and Laimbeers part. peace

who watches the watchmen? says:
Wow! That’s pretty bad. Suspensions all around obviously. I haven’t seen too many fights between females in pro sports. It seems like women go all out to kick someones ass when they get into it…not that I’m condoning it. Mahorn is a douche btw. No sh!t you wouldn’t push or hit a woman. Were we expecting you to say something else like ” I love cracking a woman’s skull from time to time after a few brews! Who’s with me?!”

insanity…rick mahorn could go up on assault and battery charges….pushing girls around…. how about that one girl that got hurt trying to stop the ohter?…thats no fair..

all of detroit’s professional basketball players seem to have their kool-aid spiked or something. one fight after another, i remember at the end of a bulls win in detroit, tyrus thomas and rip hamilton got in eachotehrs faces and were ejected, and the fans, as usual, threw sh*t at tyrus

as much as i hate to see girls in a situation to get hurt, its great to see some fire in them.

Jul.23 at 2:17 am

Hursty says:
Mahorn did wrong Im not denying it but Leslie got pushed and fell down way further than what seemed like she should have- it almost seems like he missed her and collected on the second pass. He did wrong but it didnt seem like he hit her hard enough for that to happen so dramatically. It really, really sucks for the chick who busted her knee trying to keep her team-mate off. 4 players were suspended inc. Parker… she did win the ESPY right? @ Kadavour- I was laughing until the girl hurt herself, that was when it became more serious for me. Not cool…. just a bit of hit n giggle for me in the Outback though.

Jul.23 at 2:21 am

solito says:
That’s exactly what the women’s game needs. You finally have a player who has media exposure, and what does she do? To much EGO not enough CHARACTER (on all sides). Rick Mahorn? When big dudes shove, people fall. When short dudes shove NOTHING HAPPENS. So get over it!

Milton is gangsta, punching Rick Mahorn!

Jul.23 at 2:58 am

RV says:
well let’s break it down….candice and peirson get tangled up and take each other down, peirson charges and swings, candice pulls her down, pierson swings (and connects?)at Leslie, #14 of the shock takes candice down and pins her to the floor, Mahorn pushes Leslie, Milton not only punches Mahorn, but also shoves him…..

Jul.23 at 3:14 am

Hursty says:
… meanwhile the girl breaks her knee, the ref trips on her own foot, the commentators are going ‘omg omg someone stop it’. Everyone stands up in the stands and Parker pops her jersey. Ron Artest is smiling somewhere…

Jul.23 at 3:15 am

RV says:
forgot the Spark’s bench coming over to also shove Mahorn, weird how both times its the other team and not Detroit who took the most swings.

That´s awful: women fighting, men getting involved in a women brawl, an athlete badly injured, all the sh*t it throws at the image of the (W)NBA again, and again in Detroit (maybe there´s something strange in the Palace´s air)… and that´s strange: Bill Laimbeer not taking a charge and flopping during all this mess.

rob.b says:
Did anybody actually see the highlights, no way in the world did he actually push lisa leslie. I heard the article about it and was thinking ‘oh my gosh i have to see this’. Then after watching, he barely touches her. He was obviously just trying to put his hands against her to keep her away and she tripped and fell. What a joke.

Jul.23 at 9:07 am

TADOne says:
I’m in no way going to defend Mahorn or the previous brawl, but the Pistons have sold out 235 consecutive games, have led the league in 4 out of the last 5 years in attendance and people still want to look at Detroit fans as crazy or unruly? Whatever. I know there was some sarcasm in those comments, but i’ve only had 1 cup of coffee this morning and feel a bit testy.

Jul.23 at 9:09 am

Eboy says:
Yes, yes, you guys are so correct!!!! Lisa Leslie, one of the greatest woman’s athletes of the last 50 years, with an incredible sense of balance and athleticism, just happended to trip over her own feet after being pushed away by a person who weighs somewhere in the vicinity of 320 lbs, because you know, Rick Mahorn has always had a sterling reputation during bench clearing brawls.

Jul.23 at 9:11 am

Eboy says:
This had nothing to do with the Detroit fans, TAD, but the blatant stupidity being spouted during this conversation isn’t making the perception any better.

Jul.23 at 9:14 am

Ben says:
Yes, Lisa Leslie will probably need to be admitted to the hospital after being mauled by Mahorn. That’s if she hasn’t died from internal bleeding yet of course. But our prayers are with her.

you guys are some b!tches. If you watch the video on ESPN (they broke it down frame by frame) then you can clearly see 2 things:
1. Rick Mahorn pushed Lisa Lesbi@n down after she was ruining into the fight and she swung at him right before Rick pushed her down.
2. right after the ‘push’ Rick extends his hand to help Lisa back up. These are the facts not opions and if you guys want to act like some b!tches about this fine, but these are just the facts.

BETCATS says:
and another thing, before this who cared the WNBA exsisted? When their was no girl fights, the WNBA was consitantly on yawn staus. They have a small fan base but if you are a dumb@ss like Riggs, who says “lol @ candace parker having an ego? now ive heard everything. at least my girl can fight yall see that MMA takedown from the floor??”. Seriously? You are a Candace Parker fan because she can fight? An attribute that has nothing to do with basketball? If you like Candace because she is skilled fine, but dont come in here with this bullsh!t about being a fan because she can pull some Raw v. Smackdown sh!t. And stop acting like the 7ft bean pole lisa leslie is so inniconet. This rant is over until somebody else decides to say some dumbsh!t. All eyes on you Eboy.

Jul.23 at 10:22 am

TTP says:
i wish peeps would quit bashing mahorn. it looks like he was trying to be a peacemaker according to this clip. i don’t know why they didn’t play this cut over and over when it was all happening. http://television.aol.com/tvtop5/wnb…B83808AE66E790 she shouldn’t have been swinging on him to begin with. they need to fine and/or suspend her and all the chicks that ran up and snuck him, IMO. could you imagine what’d happen in the NBA if this happened to a coach?

Jul.23 at 10:26 am

BETCATS says:
i dont know professor Eboy, what do you think? If Lisa Lesile swung at you and was running into a fight would you A. Push her away B. Just let her jump in C. Swing back? And you act as though Lisa is the size of Earl Boykins. She has 1-2 inches on Rick and is stronger looking then Rick (who appears to have not lifted anything but hot dogs in the last 5 years), and if you really think Rick was trying to kill Lisa, or beat Lisa why didnt he jump on her after he pushed her? Instead he extends his arm and appears to be trying to help her up. Then Miton-Jones pops up behind rick and shoves him, then hits him. What does Rick the women beater do? Nothing. Then the lady from the Sparks coaching staff comes up and gets in Rick’s face, what does Rick do? Nothing. He was their as a peace maker and if you dont belive it, go vote for Ralph Nader.

Jul.23 at 10:45 am

TTP says:
BETCATS… dude i’m with you that they need to back up off of mahorn, but lisa leslie is only six five to mahorn’s six ten. maorn probably weighs almost 300 lbs if not more by this point. still i don’t think he needs to take a hook to the face just because he’s bigger. he’s got a right to defend himself like everyone else. breaking up and gettinga handle on the players was just him doing his job.

Jul.23 at 10:47 am

BETCATS says:
she is only 6′5? so a 6′5 person is the most dominat Center in WNBA history? O never new that. But those 300 Lbs are Sean May pounds, not Mr. T pounds.

Jul.23 at 10:58 am

Jukai says:
BETCATS, did you think she was seven feet or something?

Jul.23 at 11:00 am

A WNBA dress code would settle all of this.

Jul.23 at 11:34 am

Ben says:
You know, that’s right about the lady hitting Mahorn. I mean, it’s kind of a double standard when there’s a big deal made about Leslie getting shoved, but nobody in the media seems to be upset about that lady popping ‘Horn in the back. If that was Artest punching Phil Jackson or something, that’s all you hear about for the rest of his career…

Hey, anyone else notice that Milton, a woman, threw a punch at a gigantic dude way bigger than she is and DIDN’T backpedal halfway up the court afterwards? she’s more man than some basketball players I know… and if nobody had interfered with cute-as-hell Parker’s takedown, she’d had that girl in a Kimura lock within seconds, methinks.

Jul.23 at 11:43 am

d.Y. says:
True Russ. At least you’ve got heads talking about the WNBA, tastelessly as it is.. (ASPOV please? Co Co? HollY? PP? illy? Anybody? I notice the ladies have completely abstained) Oh well.. folks have been saying Candace Parker would bring more and different pub to the league.

Jul.23 at 11:46 am

Khalid Salaam says:
3 things. first, it didn’t seem at all to me that mahorn piushed leslie, it was more he was trying to stop her from going into the fight and it was the weight difference that caused her to tumble. don’t think he did it on purpose……
Second i think this is the biggest story of the year for the WNBA. Kinda sad….and lastly, i like Candace Parker even more now.

Jul.23 at 11:54 am

Joel Kimmel says:
I bought tickets to see Candace Parker and the Sparks against the Liberty on Friday, so this is pretty unfortunate!

Jul.23 at 11:59 am

d.Y. says:
Why Joel? Oh… suspensions? They can’t suspend Parker for getting the WNBA the longest Sportscenter segment in a decade.

Silky Slim says:
If more incidents like this were to happen, maybe more people would watch and attend games.

Jul.23 at 12:18 pm

Silky Slim says:
I would hope CP3-fm (female version) knew that at some point, someone was going to “send her a message” on the court. She’s a rookie who’s grabbing all the headlines and getting all the attention. What did she expect!

Jul.23 at 12:22 pm

RV says:
I definitely have to disagree BETCATS, Mahorn clearly pushed Leslie, perhaps he didn’t intend on flooring her and it does look like she lost her footing at the very end, which is why she flew across the floor rather than just falling or stumbling down, but there was definitely a push….First, whoever was doing the game said she saw it live and it looked like Mahorn didn’t mean any harm, Rebecca Lobo said the exact same thing. However, even a female Sparks assistant coach (i think) stepped up to Mahorn, there definitely was some kind of threat there. Maybe the TV crew was trying to protect the league. Second, Leslie was still crying post game, she looked frightened more than anything, which leads me to believe Mahorn wasnt exactly trying to hold her by the hand and walk her back. Third, Mahorn was holding and pushing Leslie back at the very beginning at the chest, which is cool with a NBA player, but its possible Leslie took that offensively and therefore swung at him, which pissed Mahorn off resulting in the push. Finally, of all the people in the WNBA, Leslie is probably the least likely to be a threat (if you don’t provoke her), she went to help out Candice and Mahorn just walked in there looking to clear out anything in purple, which was his first mistake (the second being pushing Leslie in the chest and the third pushing her down). As a coach he should have restrained his own team. Laimmbeer also seemed very hesitant to get in there, he was just talking to the players.

Jul.23 at 12:26 pm

B. Long says:
I’m with Khalid on this one. No way Rick pushed Lisa down. He simply was trying to hold her back to keep it from being escalated and she fell down kinda dramatically. Obviously it looked worse than it was because your looking at a 300pd man and a 150(maybe) 6′6″ woman. Hope Cheryl is OK.

Jul.23 at 12:29 pm

Silky Slim says:
What is it about the Palace that brings out the mean streak in people?????

Jul.23 at 12:30 pm

TTP says:
RV, that’s a rather warped point of view to have if you ask me.

Jul.23 at 12:34 pm

mike says:
I like how this all happens less than a week after the WNBA ‘making history’ with the ‘outside game’ and candace parker winning an espy award.
i agree with myles brown about a dress code solving all of this.

Jul.23 at 12:37 pm

RV says:
You could argue that he was too strong for her and this was just a man not being used to the situation so he put too much mustard on the shove. Maybe had he pushed Alonzo Mourning the same way Zo wouldn’t have even moved a bit, but the physical force was there, it was enough to get her off her feet, so there’s no optical illusion there. It didn’t appear as a push due to weight difference, there was a push.

Jul.23 at 12:39 pm

RV says:
TTP, what exactly?

Jul.23 at 12:41 pm

TTP says:
or maybe she lost her balance because she was wilding and either swinging at him or swinging to get away when he gave her that nudge. either way, her (possibly) swinging at him and her teammates reactions by running up and sucker punching/slapping/pushing him was highly innaprorpirate and you seem to have ignored that.

Jul.23 at 12:45 pm

Moose says:
brawls should stay in baseball and out of basketball.

Jul.23 at 12:46 pm

RV says:
actually, i pointed that out early in this post, that long comment i made was in reponse to BETCATS comment on the Mahorn-Leslie incident, so it wasn’t necessary for me to comment on Milton punching Mahorn…..was it unnecessary? Yeah, but I don’t blame them, not when you see your female teammate flying after apparently being pushed by a MAN, who’s a coach on the other team.

Jul.23 at 12:49 pm

TTP says:
it’s a warped view. whats simple is that these basketball players were fighting and he as a coach went to break it up. regardless of whether you think it’s obvious that lisa was the least likely to be a threat, because all of this happened in less than five seconds and to him it probably looked like she was trying to join the melee. i really hate when people say “but she’s a woman.” if the exact same thing happened in an NBA game, or if the coaches were all female, no one would be having this discussion.

Jul.23 at 12:51 pm

RV says:
Also, i did point out Leslie possibly tripped at the end making it look worse, but there was clearly a push by Mahorn and he clearly went out of his way to confront Leslie when she was simply trying to break up the fight. That’s not up for debate. The question is was it a case of him not realizing how much stronger he was in that situation or him reacting to her punch and trying to floor her. Unfortunately, without a better/closer angle there’s no way to figure that out.

Jul.23 at 12:55 pm

TTP says:
they should be fined and suspended for that. what if it were a female coach and they ran and snuck her? ironically, i think that’s a rather sexist perspective to take. these wnba players probably endure way more physical contact during one quarter of a game than that what lisa leslie experienced. don’t give me the argument “but she’s a woman/he’s a man..etc” because in order to get as good as they are at what they do, they have to play against men to begin with.

Jul.23 at 12:59 pm

TTP says:
he didn’t go out of his way. they first got tangled up in the middle of the pile. he only walked away from it when she was noncompliant. what’s he supposed to do? let her go and beat up a defenseless member of his team? remember, lisa was being pretty aggressive there.

WNBA is lame. Gotta love Motorcity, though.

Jul.23 at 1:00 pm

Ben says:
Yeah, so you’re saying it isn’t a big deal that Mahorn got hit in the back, because he was a man. So it’s ok to hit somebody because you know they won’t hit you back? I don’t get that. I think striking somebody multiple times is worse than a shove, man or woman.

Jul.23 at 1:05 pm

TTP says:
exactly, ben

Jul.23 at 1:24 pm

RV says:
Ben, your link “the gayest website ever”, goes along with your gayest post ever (no offense if you’re gay, but please read my argument more carefully)..if anything is warped here (which by the way, means twisting things, how i can possibly twist anything when i’m taking into account both point of views, Leslie’s AND mahorn’s???) its you’re responses, i never said it was ok for the females to be physical and not ok for the men or a bigger/lesser deal, i’m not the one who’s going to dish out the fines/suspensions and I sure as hell aint God, so my own personal view on that isn’t going to be the deciding factor on any punishment handed out. I’m looking at things from their own point of view. Maybe to you, right now, sitting down and relaxed and with a level head it doesnt matter if she’s female or if he’s a man. BUT TO HER, as female, not in an in-game situation (so who cares if she’s played with guys before and took in game hits, thats like saying a woman should take her husband beating her because she use to take the hits her bro gave her while they were horseplying- diff situations, so you cant compare them), during a fight, she sees mahorn, who i doubt had a smile on his face, so he was probably frowning (and he is a scary man period), then I CAN UNDERSTAND her reaction and the reaction of her teammates, IM NOT SAYING ITS RIGHT. I did say Milton’s punch was unnecessary (or “wrong” if it makes you feel better) but i can UNDERSTAND where she was coming from.

Jul.23 at 1:26 pm

Ben says:
ha ha ha, I can’t believe you actually clicked on that! Wow that’s gay

Jul.23 at 1:30 pm

Ben says:
And I’m just saying that you’re pretty quick to judge Mahorn and point that out and hint at sexual abuse, which is kind of effed up. But you “understand” that he should get punched in the back. So let me ask you this: can he punch her back?

Jul.23 at 1:36 pm

TTP says:
“hat’s like saying a woman should take her husband beating her because she used to take the hits her bro gave her while they were horseplaying” is the dumbest thing i’ve ever heard. for one because what happened there was othing compared to getting beat and second, was nothing like what she experiences during the course of the game. AGAIN you’re bringing gender into play. if rick mahorn was a female coach and leslie fell to the ground, you wouldn’t be saying anything either. what you’re doing is supporting an extremely flawed argument.

Jul.23 at 1:40 pm

RV says:
and please feel free to point out where i said “its ok so hit someone because they wont hit back”… Or maybe that was just you injecting your own views/thought into my comment…and there’s nothing gay about clicking on anyone’s orange name on here, you’re acting like your name says “Ben: by the way my link goes to a gay website”…..and dude you’re just digging that hole deeper and deeper, i never hinted at sexual abuse, i simply made a reference to it to counter TTP’s example. I was in no way linking sexual abuse to the fight. And no, i dont “understand” he should be punched in the back, i UNDERSTAND WHY SHE DID IT, but you were ooh so close, thanks for playing.

ha ha ha ha you totally cliked on it though c’mon now, you knew what it was Oh, SNAP!!!

Jul.23 at 2:01 pm

Jul.23 at 2:02 pm

its just alex says:
Just goes to show doesn’t matter the sex, sports are emotional and people can and do act irrationally. It’s sad it’s such a big way for the League to grab attention, especially since Parker’s arrival seems to have given it a big boost. I don’t think Mahorn intentionally pushed Leslie, but it would’ve been much brighter on his behalf if he’d just said, “I was trying to break it up” rather than he wouldn’t touch a woman or whatever he said, which just sounds like a lie once you’ve seen the video tape. Above all it’s just sad that someone trying to help break it up ended up with an injury for such a stupid reason.

Yo, if this would’ve been oiled up models instead of sweaty basketball players, this would’ve been hot. BTW, why didn’t Mrs. Parker AKA Sheldon Williams get involved. Dude’s pretty big and I hate Bill Laimbeer.

Really? Why don’t you just say “I know you are but what am I?” And you still didn’t answer my question.

TTP, read my post right after yours to clear up that abuse thing, i wasn’t comparing sexual abuse and the fight. There’s nothing flawed about what i’m saying. First, Mahorn’s shove/push and Leslie’s punch/swing were all there, right? Right. That’s not fiction or an illusion. Second, i’m not trying to make an argument as to who was right or wrong. I’m trying to look at both sides and see where they were coming from. Yes, i did point out how Leslie being a woman might make her react differently and how she may not be able to take a shove like Zo would, BUT, i also pointed out how Mahorn may not have realized he put too much force on the push and that he was just reacting to her swing. Just because i talked more about Leslie’s point of view doesn’t mean i think she was right. There’s just more to say on her end than Mahorn’s since his side is more straight forward. Also, i was harder on Mahorn because he did initiate the contact by going over there and trying to retrain her, had Leslie ran towards him to pull him off and then punched him and Mahorn shoved her, then i’d be harder on her for starting it.

TTP says:
RV there is nothing wrong with the way rick acted. it does not matter that lisa leslie is a woman and he’s a man. what matters is lisa leslie is a six foot five center who was being aggressive and looked like she needed to be restrained. mahorn did what coaches are supposed to do when players start to scrap in the middle of the game, which is separate them from the pack. I’m sorry but the man is restraining a basketball player and does not have time to think about how much force he’s putting into some push.

“TripleDouble says:
I’m now a Candice Parker fan… she was dope. That other women was buggin out, Candace served her ass up by throwing her down. Go Candace!” This is the type of ignorace i am talking about. A note to TripleDouble and all people who share this view: If you want to see women hit each other watch wrestlemania. The WNBA is where women play basketball and if you only like it because their was a girl fight then your intelligence level is at an all time low. If you consider yourself a WNBA fan (i dont) then that is why you should like Candace not because she can hurt people.
