Worthy of Your Attention

by Marcel Mutoni

For all intents and purposes, tonight’s Game Five is the season for the Hornets.

A loss tonight, and they can pretty much kiss the series and their magical year goodbye; even they know that the odds aren’t exactly in their favor should they have to face an elimination game back in San Antonio.

With the pressure squarely on their young (and inexperienced) shoulders tonight, it’ll be interesting to see how they react.

After absorbing two consecutive beatdowns to start the series, Gregg Popovich and co. finally figured out that the way to beat the Hornets is to let Paul and West get theirs, while shutting everyone else down. Your move, Byron Scott.

(Oh yeah, I guess I should mention that Jameer Nelson and Rashard Lewis will be doing his best Joe Namath impersonations in Detroit tonight. Um, good luck with that, fellas.)

You guys, as members of the media, should help put an end to this stupid trend by not reporting on any ‘gaurentees’ made by any player that’s not top 10 in the league.

Diesel says:
And..if byron scott can’t figure out a way to get Peja good looks after seeing the defensive scheme for 2 straight games, someone needs to take away his coach of the year award.

tenorca says:
I disagree. It seems like the playoffs are feistier this year: guys are talking trash, refs seem to be letting more contact go, and no one looks unbeatable. And like Jameer Nelson said, he wasn’t exactly going to guarantee a loss. I know he could’ve kept his mouth shut too but if you’re one game away from elimination, I think it’s smart to at least try and fire up your team.

tenorca says:
And I think the Hornets win easily tonight. Just saying.

vannshy says:
its Peja we’re talking about, not Kobe, and he has Bowen on him, there’s nothing he can do. Spurs in 6

May.13 at 3:52 pm

Diesel says:
I don’t think guaranteeing a win fires up young and inexperienced teams. I think it puts unnecessary additional pressures on a team already in a high pressure situation. And if a guarantee had to be made to fire up Orlando, all I’m saying is it should have came from Dwight because, ya know, he actually has an effect on the game.

May.13 at 3:55 pm

Diesel says:
Exactly vanshy, its peja..who’s 6′10″. Being gaurded by an old Bowen 6′7″. Peja also has a guy named CP3 on his team. I’m guessing if they run some screens for Peja or post him up, CP3 will get him the ball.

albie1kenobi says:
the spurs/hornets series changed when pop put bowen on peja and effectively took out the Bugs’ outside offense. it’s not so much that parker can defend CP3, but without hornets’ major outside thread, the spurs can collapse and defend the paint much better. peja is a jump shooter and have no post game, posting him out will not be an effective way of utilizing peja.
another nice move by pop was starting ginobili again, whom the hornets have no one to match up with. if i was Byron “coach of the year” scott, i’d start bonzi wells who is very comfortable posting ginobili up (the weakness in manu’s defensive game), thus forcing other spurs to help and thus freeing CP3 to wreck havoc. did i mention that bonzi has consistently killed the spurs, regardless of what team he played for?

Mo Charlo says:
As a Spurs fan, I’d like to apologize to everybody for my team systematically taking out all the fun, young, energetic teams year after year. Having said that, Pop for Prez.

May.13 at 4:34 pm

Diesel says:
As a Spurs hater - you haven’t done anything except hold court in this series. Keep doing that and your Golden Girls team loses this series.

nic says:
i know its recorded all over the place, but im having a tough time really wrapping my mind around the idea that peja is 6′10″. just sayin.

May.13 at 4:57 pm

vannshy says:
of course, his whole game is behind the 3point line, the last time he went to the paint was during warmup.

May.13 at 5:11 pm

WhaHuh says:
Hedo is 6′10″ as well

Dutch Rich says:
I’m sorry Marcel but I think that Pop figured out how to get Chandler in foul trouble and out the game. Huge pendulum swing on offense and defense.

May.13 at 6:49 pm

albie1kenobi says:
amen to that, Dutch Rich. chandler is the 2nd most important hornet because of the role he has on the team. he’s the last line of defense, and spurs having to worry about CP3 lobbing him alley oops gives CP3 enough room to be THAT much more dangerous.

May.13 at 6:51 pm

WhaHuh says:
removing chandler, removes 5 assists and 10 points per night for the hornets

Joey E. says:
It was a nice season New Orleans. Get a bench, and maybe you’ll be back next year

May.13 at 7:17 pm

albie1kenobi says:
hmm… really? hornets have a weaken bench than the spurs? talent wise hornets is actually better than the spurs, the main difference is Pop and the fact these spurs had played together for about 246145 years.

So wait, even though Orlando finished with fewer points than Detroit they still won, right?

May.13 at 10:21 pm

Tuomas says:
Phew, jeeeez. Picked the wrong game to watch live (it’s nearly 5.00am where I live). Detroit survived after letting a god-awful Orlando hang on for the entire game, and hence being god-awful themselves. Shoulda really been over by halftime, but the Pistons just couldn’t hit anything. However, I was sure it was over when they put the clamps on to start the fourth (Magic’s first field goal came with something like 3.30 left) and Detroit (=Dice) started to finally hit shots. But no. Orlando actually showed more poise down the stretch this time, with Hedo making two clutch drives. Alas, on his final try it was TAAAAAAYYYYYYY with the huge block! Reg and 2004 all over again, except Hedo was gonna dunk it. That’s the play of the series right there. Stuck was great, although the playmaking obviously suffers with Chauncey on the bench. Btw, Billups needs to buy Antonio dinners the rest of the playoffs for giving him time to rest, without The Dice Man they would’ve lost. 17 and 11 with huge boards and hustle, and the three field goals the Pistons desperately needed when they had Orlando suffocated on D. All in all, two teams playing like crap and one of them had to escape down the stretch. I can’t sleep now, hands still shake. Might as well catch Spurs-Hornets.

May.13 at 10:35 pm

Tuomas says:
Also, Howard with the quietest 14 and 17 you ever saw, most of the boards came on D with the Pistons missing open jumpers and not going for offensive glass. And Rashard really needs to be less “talkative”, this time he got his dunk bluntly stuffed by Maxiell and then proceeded to get beaten to a board by LINDSEY HUNTER.

I never thought Tony Parker can school by CP3 like that, just like what he did to Steve Nash.

May.14 at 11:41 am

marcgar says:
spurs will win game six and then we’ll see if the hornets can handle the pressure of a game seven.

May.14 at 1:48 pm

JoeGym says:
Tony Parker did his thing (great And-1 play). Even though he looked off he still shoots 50% for the game but damn Manu (5-15FG) and Duncan (5-18) need to figure out how to make shots. Role players need to wear their home gear on the road since their game wont travel
