OJ Mayo, money, scandal, NCAA, yawwwwwwwn

Who spent more money, those who allegedly paid OJ’s way through a few months of college, or ESPN on their coverage of those who allegedly broke the NCAA’s sacred rules? Yahoo! sports got Reggie Bush, so ESPN went after OJ Mayo. Does anybody care?

pointless… why are we even talking about this?

H to the izzo says:
HE should have taken a short term contract abroad. He would have got more money,a better standard of play(a better chance of developing)and not have put money into the hands of the NCAA money grubbers.I guess this is what he gets for doing things their way, huh?

rav says:
out of interest did oj get paid for his slam cover last year? if not then did he do it for free - if not wouldn’t that be violating the NCAA ‘rules’? (even though the majority of folks know that the NCAA are eejits)

rav says:
are SI gonna go after matt leinhart then?

what says:
I’ve been saying what h to the izzo said for a long time. Someone needs to wake these high school American athletes up and let them know that they can get paid AND learn against better competition if they go from high school to Euroleague for a year and then enter the draft instead of playing NCAA ball. Then they can avoid the greedy-azz NCAA and David Stern’s fascist age limit. I’m no fan of the European game (too soft, too much flopping) but it’s DEFINITELY better than the NCAA game.

um, is anyone remotely surprised to hear this? if anything, its surprising how long it took for this to get out

RV says:
i’m pretty sure Slam doesn’t have to pay anyone to have them on the cover, they’re getting exposure through it, makes them more popular and every once in a while the curse kicks in and they have a bad season, but overall its all good

May.11 at 7:32 pm

Dacre says:
I personally think that if a high school player goes overseas there is a big chance that they lose too much exposure….would high school kids have the maturity to leave like that? Some can’t handle going to a university three states over?!

this is the dumbest thing since cottage cheese

May.11 at 9:25 pm

Bucknuts says:
Uh, yeah I care. But I think this was a no briainer, why else would he goto a school that didn’t recruit him. The real question is, why don’t you care? Doesn’t slam have ethics?
I see OJ is getting paid and can’t help but remember the article slam posted on him, what a joke.

Cottage cheese isn’t that bad…

May.11 at 9:59 pm

RV says:
agree with Dacre, sometimes its difficuolt to get any video from games overseas or games alone, i’m sure scouts would go over there, but even Mike Harris had like a 40-20 game overseas and he was the leading scorer i think, so its hard to gauge how good a player is playing against oversears comp

@ Dacre : I’m with you on this one. Can you picture Mike Beasley going wild in Ibiza or taking all out week ends in Prague? That can only end badly. Kansas St gave him some sort of structure that was very much needed for him. Remember, they’re pros in Europe… no one is going to babysit them.

Bucknuts, what rules-abiding team and player do you cheer for?

Dunkadelic MC says:
O J Mayo is just another one of the hip-hop/ballers of the past 15 years (The “Dunkadelic-Era”) who are about getting their money. He made alot of money for USC while he was there for one year. He should’ve been allowed to enter the NBA Draft right out of high school like KG, Kobe, D-Howard, and LeBron. All 4 were on the NBA First Team. See you in June for the 2008 NBA Draft O J and good luck.

May.12 at 8:14 am

Z says:
Can the term ‘hiphop/baller’ be moderated? It’s ridiculous on so many levels.

May.12 at 11:49 am

Khalid Salaam says:
“hip-hop/baller” is hands down one of the most intellectually infantile phrases i’ve ever heard.

Steve says:
yea maybe alot of kids do this but it seems hippocritical for SLAM to be saying who cares. A lot of the Mayo article you ran was about how misunderstood he is and how people shouldn’t jump to conclusions just cuz he’s got shady associates. Then when it turns out he’s dirty, you go and say, well, no one really cares anyways.

curious, why doesn’t he just fess up and say yeah, i did this (because we know he did). then when he goes pro and the penalties are assessed, he can endow a scholarship for future the usc basketball players that won’t be able to recieve one. it would definitely help his image, and would not cost him much.

May.12 at 4:40 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
much to simple of an answer steve-o. therefore i will no longer continue to discuss this topic.

All he got was 30k, what a tool. Slam said OJ wasn’t getting pimped in a artical like 2 years ago on this site. I guess he was. Atleast get bank like Reggie. and Stev your right, it is funny how Slam makes it a COVER sotry about OJ and how he might now be dirty blah blah blah but then they accuse ESPN for covering this sotyr like it’s nothing and brushing it of as who cares. I love you guys so please stop making cover stories about things that make you yawn.

May.13 at 1:54 pm

SES says:
ESPN is bias. They praise errbody else but when oj comes up its always something negative. They just need to chill on all that n let dude live his life. They have something against USC. Next year they’re gonna investigate Derozan. Since when did they start investigating like dey da police

@rainman 10: Kwame James the guy who stopped Richard Reid the “shoebomber” on that flight went to Lawrence North HS in Indiana where Oden, Mike Conley & Eric Montross went. He was set to play at IU for the Hoosiers.

Bambam says:
well here is my view on this situation first and foremost there are few if any jv, varsity, aau, coaches who are well verse in ALL NCAA recuiting rules. I say this because as a coach, and mentor I feel it’s my duty to this opened the players eyes to the pitfall and vultures lurking to make ther living on our youths God given gifts. As coaches we need to understand that we are more than just coaches and realize that after 4 or plus years having coached them we’re mentors for life and these kids trust us. The kids see us as coaches, mentors , and father figures. As coaches we need to protect our childrens from the elements unknown to them so lets teach ourselfs about NCAA rules and recuiting tricks so that kids like OJ in the near future won’t jeopardize ther future , And please kids do some reserch before saying yes to any knuckle head in a suit with his/her name on a card. P.S perhaps us coaches should get together and write a B.B.B on these agentcy to help them make better decisions

fanofthegame says:
So I guess we know now everything I wrote here when Mayo was on the cover was true? So if some yahoo on a forum like this knew then(and long before that) that Mayo wasn’t an amateur an Guillory was bad news how did USC not know? And how did Slam get suckered by Mayo so badly they wrote an article telling us how everything we knew about him was untrue?

May.23 at 1:16 pm

SLAM ONLINE | » OJ Mayo is Agent-Free says:
[…] Not too long after someone snitched a report came out alleging that college basketball star OJ Mayo accepted gifts and cash while playing for USC, he has been dropped by his agent Calvin Andrews of BDA Sports. “Due to the overwhelming intensity of recent allegations regarding the recruitment of O.J. Mayo, we feel that our representation of him is a distraction for he and his family at this time,” the statement said. […]
