Nets and Nuggets Talking ‘Melo Trade?

by Marcel Mutoni

After everything that’s happened with Carmelo Anthony and the Nuggets this season, it was only a matter of time before the trade rumors began swirling.

Today, we have our first: According a Jersey paper, the Nets and Nuggets are exploring the possibility of moving ‘Melo to The Swamp.

Thinking big, the Nets have had exploratory conversations with Denver about Carmelo Anthony and Marcus Camby, league sources said. Vandeweghe traded for Camby and drafted Anthony in Denver.

Should there be any truth to this, logic would dictate that for New Jersey to get their hands on ‘Melo, they’d have to give up Vince Carter. And unless a third team elects to get involved in this mess of a trade, I don’t see how this move would significantly improve either squad.

So, for argument’s sake, let’s say this goes through: New Jersey gets a former defensive player of the year, and a young scoring forward with some baggage, but a great future. And Denver gets a past-his-prime wing player, for whom defense is the only thing he hates more than contact.

It’s a perfectly terrible idea, but I’ve learned not to underestimate the Nuggets front office.

Makes no sense.

and if you include all this Lebron to Brooklyn talk into it, you could be looking at a combo of Carmelo and Lebron.. With D Harris runnin the point and the decent young bigs they got (S Williams, Boone.. )they could be pretty good in 2010 is it??

B.Long, didn’t we have a talk some time ago about how funny hackneyed and bland your humor commentary is?

Funny, there’s talk in Miami that they may have interest in Melo too.

Kadavour: I apologize for attempting humor in your presence. Please forgive me for mentioning your Man Crush Melo and make sure that he gets a cab next time he leaves your apt. after a night at the Bald Knob Bar.

Melo for Richard Jefferson, some draft pick(s), and cash. That would be good.

May.15 at 12:52 pm

Maurice Garland says:
after all these crazy trades we’ve seen this season…im not ruling anything out.

May.15 at 1:03 pm

JR says:
Everyone knows Melo’s days in Denver are numbered after the blow up with the press after the Nuggets went down 3-0 to the Lakers, where called out the entire Nuggets coaching staff and all of his teammates saying they all just quit.

May.15 at 1:16 pm

Gerard Himself says:
Marcel, in the article there’s no mention of trading Carter. The Nets can’t trade him even if they wanted to, for the simple fact that they’ve overpaid for him, and no one will take him after that. IF (big if) such a trade would be made, it would be without Carter, like the article said: “Having said that, the Nets have assets to do something: three draft picks, Keith Van Horn’s contract, young players Marcus Williams, Sean Williams, Josh Boone, Richard Jefferson coming off his best statistical season, Nenad Krstic’s contract that they can use in a sign-and-trade and one $3.3 million trade exception from the Jason Kidd deal.” Those are the options, but of course it’s highly unlikely this will happen.

May.15 at 1:23 pm

Candice says:
I don’t see Melo getting traded and I also think no matter what player’s are playing in Denver it doesn’t matter because George Karl is still the coach. I think a different coach different result’s then past year’s.

May.15 at 1:30 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I gotta think a trade for Melo and Camby would involve RJ, Marcus Williams, Sean Williams or Krstic and one of their two (their own and the Mavs) 2008 first-round picks. Not Vince.

May.15 at 1:37 pm

Brandon Hoffman says:
It’s time for Nuggets VP Mark Warkentien and player personnel executive Rex Chapman to take the blame for the trade that brought Allen Iverson to Denver. By trading Andre Miller, Joe Smith, and two first-round picks for Allen Iverson and forward Ivan McFarlin, Warkentien added $11 million in additional salary in exchange for 5 more regular season wins.
Bottom line: the Nuggets were a better team with Andre Miller and Earl Boykins than they are with Allen Iverson.

May.15 at 1:39 pm

B. Long says:
@Russ: Yea, I can’t see Jersey keeping Marcus now that they have Dash. Too much young talent at the point. Where does AI fit into all this. Is he staying?

May.15 at 1:41 pm

Wabba301 says:
IF MELO CANT DO ANYTHING WITH AI ON HIS TEAM WHAT IS HE GOING TO DO FOR THE NETS.

May.15 at 1:48 pm

Cub Buenning says:
Who(m)ever ends up with Melo (he should stay here)will be lucky. Especially when he will be soon be considered one of the world’s best players after he dominates the Olympics. Russ, that trade makes more sense; for both teams. I would rather the Nuggets moved AI and Camby, not Melo…..keep the youth, move the age. Nuggets current front office has made some pretty strong moves (trade for AI and JR, resign Melo) they just haven’t changed the culture (NO ACCOUNTABILITY-anywhere) that started with, surprise,….KIKI!

May.15 at 1:51 pm

Weapon X says:
I hope this @ least sparks more trade interest by other teams for Melo. Camby needs to stay.

May.15 at 1:59 pm

Weapon X says:
or like Cub said, move The Answer. He needs to go to a stronger contender so he can get his chip.

May.15 at 2:12 pm

TADOne says:
Hey Cub, did you ever drop your ‘State of the Union’ for the Nuggets?

May.15 at 2:12 pm

what says:
Good idea to trade Melo, terrible idea to make this particular trade.

May.15 at 2:29 pm

Gerard Himself says:
About Camby: can somebody explain to me why Camby’s name always is coming up during trade talks? Why do the Nuggets want to get rid of him? The obvious answer: because of his contract? To me, he’s the second best center in the West, so I don’t get it.

May.15 at 2:29 pm

nastruthomas says:
Can….shut up right now.

May.15 at 3:02 pm

WhaHuh says:
Camby has NO offensive skills and is consistently owned by heavier PF/C. He has no post defense and now the West is becoming stacked with great offensive big men. Camby is only good at help Defense

May.15 at 3:03 pm

WhaHuh says:
Whoever gets melo will be successful, hes a great player, maybe a he needs a change in scenery and no more George Karl

May.15 at 4:01 pm

B. Long says:
Melo somehow belongs on the Knicks…but I really wouldn’t wish that on Steph. He’s been through enough.

May.15 at 4:04 pm

warr says:
Melo good regular season player average playoff player only team he going to be great on is if hes the 3rd option believe or not he does not rebound enough and does post enough

May.15 at 4:10 pm

glen lewis says:
Hoffman, that’s good analysis and thinking but I really think the problem rests more with the coaching, chemistry, and style of play. I’m not saying Iverson is all good but I don’t think you can place a majority of the blame on the Iverson trade.

May.15 at 4:23 pm

tealish says:
As overrated as Melo is, any trade with the Nets not including a third party, would be a bad one for Denver. The Nuggets need to go after a talented and hardworking post guy like Elton Brand. And I think Melo’s still considered a “top player who hasn’t quite reached his potential yet”, so maybe Denver can fool the Clips into packaging Livingston or Maggette. And get rid of JR Smith. Talented as he is, he does the team more harm than good.

May.15 at 4:24 pm

tealish says:
Sigh, AI just deserves a championship more than anything. I hate for him to go down as the greatest player to never win a title.

May.15 at 4:31 pm

Allenp says:
I think the Nuggets got better talent when they got rid of Miller for Iverson. Did they become a better overall team? I’m not sure. I, like Cub, blame it more on coaching and the way the team is run then some problem with the players.

May.15 at 4:45 pm

bakers' dozen (12-13) says:
I blame it on Steven Hunter…freakin’ cripple.

May.15 at 5:44 pm

Drew says:
Don’t believe any rumors about a trade for Melo unless they come out of the Denver area. I am sure a lot of teams are asking about him, but Denver is not eager to trade him. And nobody out here thinks he is overrated. He has actually become a very good rebounder. 12th in the NBA with 9.5 a game. His defense needs work, but he is only 23 and should be improving. So why does Denver want to trade him? They don’t.
And Denver was not a better team with Miller and Earl Boykins (no team is better with Boykins — he makes JR Smith look like a pass-first player who only takes good shots). The loss of Miller was big, because they don’t have a real point guard. But with AI they don’t blow as many big leads. They still need a lot of work, but they are better than the were.

Yes please!

May.15 at 6:17 pm

Bubba Chuck says:
But id rather get ron artest

May.15 at 6:18 pm

what says:
I’ve been saying what tealish said for a few months now. Trade Melo for Elton Brand and you have a title contender in Denver.

May.15 at 6:23 pm

Bubba Chuck says:
@what: not bad

May.15 at 6:31 pm

Young Chris #3 says:
Nuggets should trade for Artest straight up. Iverson would become the unquestionable primary scorer, averagin over 30 a game, Artest will get his 15-20 a night, K-Mart will get his 14 per, and they’d b rolling…

May.15 at 6:33 pm

Bubba Chuck says:
Young Chris is my new best friend

May.15 at 6:41 pm

niQ says:
send melo and camby to the raps for ford, barg, and someone else!

May.15 at 6:41 pm

Young Chris #3 says:
Since ‘Melo is making about 6 million more than Artest, another player would have to be involved, or a draft day package I suppose might work, but I can see no reason why Sacremento wouldn’t do everything they reasonably can to get a scorer of ‘Melo’s ability and likewise, I can’t see any fathomable reason why the Nuggets wouldn’t kill for a defensive powerhouse like Ron Ron

May.15 at 6:43 pm

Young Chris #3 says:
And JR Smith really reminds me of Ricky Davis, from the athleticism, to the erratic behavior to the way he would rather shoot jumpers (preferably threes) than drive to the basket in spite of his leaping ability

May.15 at 7:01 pm

B. Long says:
J.R. should’ve went to college. A year under Roy Williams would have done him wonders.

May.15 at 7:03 pm

Bubba Chuck says:
@niq: ya rite!
@young chris & blong: ya he has amazing talent, but hes stupid

May.15 at 7:14 pm

tealish says:
Yeah that’s actually a really great comparision, Young Chris. The only difference is that I don’t remember seeing Ricky Davis jack up 30footers, but their styles are almost identical give or take 10 feet from the basket.
@what: That is a glorious suggestion on your part then. And hopefully, Melo impresses with the US team again and the Nugs can get a third option along with EB in the trade.
@Drew - thoroughly impressed that you know the half million or so living in your city to conclude not a single person believes Carmelo to be overrated. He is probably the most overrated in the entire L if I’m not forgetting anyone obvious at the moment.

May.15 at 7:37 pm

poohbiz says:
i’m all for melo leaving
but there’s not a player on the nets(sadly) that’d be worth it
i’d like to see them got a top 2 pick this year

Michael NZ says:
Melo is appallingly overrated. Some else has said it here before, but he’s Glenn Robinson 2.0.

May.15 at 9:50 pm

Nick Ruland says:
Almost every response is retarted. Even with Harris the Nets have little they can legitmately offer. THis is purely Kiki gamesmanship going on here. Melo’s press is as bad as it will ever be. People ovbiously don’t understand how dysfunctional Denver is on the court right now. When you consider Melo was playing w/out a pg, and basically with the worst off-ball offense in the NBA and he gets you 26, 7.5, 3, on almost 50% from the field, he’s 23 and he has arguably been the best TEAM USA player these last three years? Please people, he’s easily the best individual scorer for any non-primary ballhandler in the NBA, it’s not even a question. You surround him with some shooters, a pg, and a post prescense and he’ll dominate any team offensively. He was doing much of the same when he was playing alongside JR adn with a distributing pg in ‘06- almost 32ppg with nearly 5 assists on 50% shooting. And honestly, the reason his value is diminished is becuase right now the NBA has 4 great extremely young and very mature players that make Melo look bad. That is no reason to give up on a 23 year old.

Glenn Robinson never averaged 28 and 8, though.

May.16 at 3:20 am

Jason says:
Carmelo to me is just flat out lazy at this point and his basketball IQ is below average. I don’t think Denver trades him (i’d rather see Iverson leave first and go to a team and organization that is serious about winning), I think because of Melos age they should hold on to him a few more seasons and at the very least try a new Coach to see what they could get out of him..and if that doesn’t work send him packing. I think Carmelo is an All-Star player and thats it. He’s certainly not as great as he thinks he is and he is lacking that certain x-factor thats makes the great players great. I think he can be part of a team and contend, but I don’t see him ever leading one..he’s just not that guy.

May.16 at 3:35 am

Jason says:
“Brandon Hoffman”: I watched Denver this year and if it wasn’t for Iverson, that team would have been a .500 team this year in the West. Trading Miller was a gamble, not because Miller is such a great player..but because he is a pure PG (something they needed this season)and the Nuggets traded him away for a SG/combo gaurd and didn’t do a good job in addressing the issue of finding another PG to team up with Iverson in the backcourt. Blame the system and Coach for their style of play, and blame that organization for making a trade for a player like Iverson without a plan in place, Iverson is not the type of player you can just add onto a team without a plan. They have won more games this season with Iverson (even withthat teams lack of structure)in the toughest Western conferense in recent memory then with Boykins/Miller (they were 1 and done with them in the playoffs as well). And as long as that team has some of the same players with the same lackluster lazy attitude the results will be the same regardless of whos on the team. I remember Andre Miller actually called Carmelo out for being lazy, and a year later Andre was traded. Iverson comes in and Carmelo is still half-assing it during games. You can’t be a quiter and play lazy everyother night during games and walk around calling yourself a “Superstar”. Give me a break. If Iverson leaves the Nuggets, Carmelo may have to start looking at himself in the mirror…and Coach Karl can stand right next to him. Iverson should leave before Melo, because all they are doing in Denver is wasting that guys time. As a fan of basketball, if I have to look at Iverson play with Carmelo and Karl next season on that lackluster team i’ll probably lose it. Iverson deserves better.

May.16 at 3:50 am

Jason says:
tealish: I don’t think Carmelo is overrated, I just don’t think he will become the player that the Nuggets fans think he will become (if that makes any since). I think he is a solid player who has some things to work on, but I don’t ever see him as the type of player that will have a big impact on the league and will change the game. If you listen to some Nuggets fans, they think Carmelo is the second coming of MJ, and unfortounatly for them thats just not the case. A few years from now they will have the same excuses, “Melo is young give him time”, well so is Lebron and D-Wade…so was Iverson and Kobe (yet all of them became who they were meant to be during or before their 5th years and are special), its starting to become now or never with Carmelo. I say you can always tell what type of player a person will be by their 5th year in the league. I think this is who Carmelo is going to be..nothing more, nothing less. I don’t think it is too much of a stretch to suggest that Carmelo has reached his potential, he may polish some moves over the next few years, but thats about it. If the Nuggets fans are waiting on Melo to become a “once in a lifetime” special player like Duncan, Iverson, Kobe, Lebron or Shaq…lets just say they better not hold their breaths. Melo should stay in Denver, because thats the only city that will put up with half effort and praise players for giving it. That guy wouldn’t last 10 minutes in a major market like New York or Philly, the fans and press would eat him alive.

If the Nuggets front office is dumb enought to trade away their future for the next 10 years away for a guy whos claim to fame is a dunk he did back in 2000. That simple. Just because you dont everything just right off the court dont mean you should be traded for a washed up has-been. They will completely destroy what little they have going for them if they trade him. Dont do it. Just dont.
