Links: Playoffs Diary Day 16

Green Monsters — The Celts finally escape Round One.

by Lang Whitaker

May 22, 1988 was a Sunday, and even though two decades have since passed, it remains one of the most important days of my life.

I assume we went to church that morning, because it was a Sunday in the South and you have to go to church in the morning. My family came home and had our ritual Sunday lunch, and then I remember going out to the TV, turning on the Hawks/Celtics Game 7, and sitting on the floor, riveted, for the next three hours. The Hawks and the Celts were battling in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Celts were established as the class of the NBA, but the up-and-coming Hawks were finally developing into a team to be reckoned with. Then there we were, standing toe to toe with the champs and exchanging blows without giving an inch.

The game ended with the Celtics winning, 118-116. Dominique scored 47 points on 19-of-23 shooting, and there was a stretch in the fourth where he and Bird went back and forth, scoring improbable basket after improbable basket. The Hawks lost, both the game and the series, but it almost felt like we’d won. The Hawks had grown up, it seemed, and from now on they’d be in that upper tier of teams like Boston or Los Angeles.

They never did. The Hawks needed to get better after the series loss, so they went out and signed Moses Malone and traded for Reggie Theus, but both guys were past their primes and neither seemed much concerned with playing defense. After that landmark Celtics series, the Hawks lost in the first round the next year. And then in 1989-90, the Hawks didn’t even make the Playoffs. Then this guy named Jordan came along and basically shut down the entire Eastern Conference for the next decade.

That game turned Atlanta into Hawks fans. For the next few years, the Hawks were Atlanta’s number one team. That changed in 1992, when Sid Bream slid across home plate and the Braves set off winning the next 14 consecutive division championships. Meanwhile, the Hawks were competitive for a while, and then they went into rebuilding mode and haven’t been to the Playoff in the last decade. And Atlanta turned their backs on the Hawks.

The last two weeks, the Hawks weren’t supposed to even compete with Boston. But they did, and they managed to push the Celts to seven games in this series. The Celts were presumed to be the team to beat in the East, and when the Hawks won all three games at home, Atlanta got into the Hawks again. As a Hawks fan, it was fun to be back in Atlanta for the games, to see random people in malls and on the street wearing Hawks caps and jerseys.

Today, for Game Seven, nothing went Atlanta’s way. The Hawks won games three, four and six because they attacked the basket, got Boston’s players in foul trouble and went to the free throw line. They started Game Seven attacking but weren’t getting any calls—the Celts were called for one foul in the entire first quarter and didn’t pick up their second foul until there was 6:43 to go in the second quarter. If Boston truly plays defense that cleanly, no wonder Garnett won defensive player of the year. Mike Breen pointed out that referee Bennett Salvatore owns a steakhouse — I’d be interested in eating there, but if the food reflects his refereeing, I think we can assume that the food is cooked on only one side.

At the same time, the Celts were magnificent on offense in Game Seven, moving the ball and finding the open guys, and then knocking down the shots while the Hawks couldn’t hit the broad side of Glen Davis (29 percent from the floor). Boston ran away with it, winning 99-65.

Boston blew out Atlanta today, but the Hawks shouldn’t be embarrassed. They weren’t supposed to be here, but they were. This summer they need to figure out how to keep Josh Smith and Josh Childress, and add a center, and I’d love to see Mike Woodson loosen up next season. If he’s back.

And for Boston, when they’re at home and things are going their way, they can beat any team in the NBA. But when things start going against them, they shrink from the spotlight. They get up by a dozen, they’re rolling. Then they get down and nobody wants to shoot, nobody wants to make the big play. Defensively, they had trouble containing Joe Johnson, who was terrific at taking on the double-teams and finding the open man — so what happens when LeBron James walks through that door? The Hawks showed the world how you beat the Celtics: Drive the ball, get the Celtics in foul trouble and feast on their sub-par bench. Problem was, the Hawks couldn’t follow their own blueprint in Game Seven.

I was going to go to Boston today for Game Seven, but I figured I didn’t need to because: a) If the Hawks won, I could catch them in-person in round two; b) if the Hawks lost they’d probably get blown out, and I wouldn’t want to be there anyway. This game isn’t even over yet, but I think I made the right call by not going. The Hawks lost the game today, but in a weird way it feels like we were the winners in this series. Boston was supposed to win the series, and they did win the series.

But the Hawks sure made it fun.

Also, I loved KG calling Michelle Tafoya “man” three times during the postgame interview.

TADOne says:
You’re right Lang, the Hawks have nothing to be ashamed about, at all. However, you are wrong about the Hawks not getting any calls in the first half. Why should they get ANY calls when all they were doing was throwing the ball into double or triple teams in the high post and turning the ball over or settling for jumpers? The Hawks played tight and nervous and it showed. Boston just capitalized on that.

Jake Appleman says:
“The broad side of Glen Davis” Are you inferring that Big Baby is both male and female?…happy that you got to taste victory in that all-important Gloria Clemente sense.

May.4 at 3:59 pm

RV says:
Lang, KG actually got in a “baby”, or i guess a “man baby”, i was surprised JVG didn’t go after that one

May.4 at 4:03 pm

RV says:
i agree with Tad for the most part, the Celtics were the aggressive team and unfortunately the whistle favors that team most of the time, shouldn’t be that way, but its something the Hawks should already know

Myung says:
I liked how the players all went over and gave each other hugs after the game. That’s the essence of sports and competition. The better team won the series. All of our weaknesses were exposed today. I think someone forgot to tell Josh Smith that it was a 1 PM tipoff today. I love our Hawks… so now, I wait for next season to begin… congratulations, Celtics and the city of Boston.

DeMarco says:
What a week. I wore my “Shock The World” t-shirt around town with pride yesterday. I feel for J-Smooth and Joe for the rough game today. But best believe I’ll be at Philips for the home opener in November!

namik says:
the hawks exposed the celtics more thoroughly than anyone could’ve hoped for. I wonder how many people would like to change their finals picks. Also, I told everyone that the celtics do not want to see lebron and everyone laughed at me. Hi to all of you. Lastly, i love the lakers.

May.4 at 4:54 pm

whooo! says:
the hawks looked so disorganized on offense, and there were so many tips/bounces, that just couldn’t go there way. they really needed to get ahead early, instead of getting down. that was their best chance, because then the arena gets quiet and the celtics tighten up with mounting pressure, but getting down early did them in for the rest of the night.

May.4 at 4:56 pm

whooo! says:
and i know kg’s a great player and all that, but his antics really piss me off. he said they wanted to make this a statement game, as they were up 30 and all 3 guys were still in. needing 7 games to beat an inferior 8th seeded team was statement enough kg. the throat slashing? REALLY!? again, against the 8th seed? and the pick on zaza, which they yanked him quickly after. yeah, it was probably retaliation for the idiotic/dangerous foul on rondo, but doing it when you’re already up 30?

May.4 at 5:11 pm

Eboy says:
KG made an ass out of himself and because of it, I hope Lebron “Pistons” their asses next series.

May.4 at 5:17 pm

namik says:
even though i understandthe feeling of satisfaction that hawks fans are feeling, I think if they’re going to improve, the satisfaction should be momentary and fleeting. Otherwise franchises end uplike Denver and Memphis where thy are always on the cusp but never get over the hump. Btw, Utah gets away with some bullsh*t.

May.4 at 5:38 pm

BuckshotLefunkstiggity says:
Don’t be idiots. The Hawks were supposed to be here. If they had Bibby from October they’d be a 6th seed at lowest, they have uber athletic players, they can fly, they played fast, and after Boston’s big 3 & JJ, Bibby and Josh Smith, I would gladly take the Hawks team 4-12. The refereeing in Atlanta those 3 games were disgraceful — 45 fts to 22 I believe in game 6. You people know nothing about the league. Playoffs aren’t about 36 wins or 67 wins or the halcyon days of 88, get a life. This league’s postseason is about matchups, mathups, and more matchups once you get into playoffs, from the knicks in 99, to Barkley’s suns nearly getting bounced in the 1st round, to Dallas. Lang Whitaker, don’t cry, dry your eye, add two vets and the Hawks are poised to be a playoff team for the next 5 seasons at the very least.

May.4 at 5:58 pm

SteveSmith#8fan says:
I cannot understand how the Hawks could not be competitive in Boston. The Hawks had a good run and the way they played in the ATL was amazing and fun to watch. I just hope this feeling last for the Hawks fans next season because this team has the potential to be a contender in the East.

May.4 at 6:05 pm

BuckshotLefunkstiggity says:
The Hawks failed tonight because they ran into a buzzsaw, sure, but Bibby let them down in a major way. Forget about his box score, but he had a chance to set the table and keep them composed and call pick and rolls all night. When he gave up the ball it only got wrose: His off-ball movement was atrocious and he seemed overwhelmed by the occasion more than anyone else out there (bar Smith, who was dreaming of Oak Hill’s friendly confines). The Hawks should feel great. The NBA has never changed in this way: when you get to the playoffs, let alone winning 3 games against a #1 seed as a young team, your entire culture is transformed. This will be the most important offseason in Hawks history since they inked John Koncrap to that mega deal eons ago.

Co Co says:
Um,that wasn’t the game 7 I was hoping for…….

May.4 at 6:48 pm

Double R says:
I like how KG said after they lost game 6 that that was the loudest he heard the Phillips Arena and said that the Hawks have bandwagon fans. I guess he forgot that Celtics fans did the same thing this year.

May.4 at 6:52 pm

RedRum says:
The Cavs are going to beat the Celtics. They have no answer for lebron. I have to admit that I have been one of the biggest lebron sceptics, but after how he has been playing the last 2 seasons, especially in the playoffs, I am a believer. I will go as far to predict that the Cavs are going to the finals again, probably against the Spurs. Only this time they might win a game or 2…

May.4 at 7:17 pm

BuckshotLefunkstiggity says:
No they are not actually. One player cannot beat the Celtics, just like one player couldn’t beat the old Celtics. From a tactical and technical and personel standpoint, as well, the Cavs are a far better match-up for the Celtics than the Hawks.

May.4 at 7:35 pm

Myung says:
My 2 favorite teams in the League are the Atlanta Hawks and whoever plays the Celtics. So…I guess that means, “Go Cavs.”

May.4 at 7:39 pm

Myung says:
The sad thing is, I don’t think the Celtics were even trying to run the score up on us (they DID put in their reserves early, and in the end, they only scored 99 pts). The fact is, they came out ready to play and had a great gameplan, and we simply didn’t execute. I have some things to say about Josh Smith, but I’ve criticized him so much in the past few years that I’ll give it a rest today. We looked like an NBDL team out there. That being said, I’m still so proud of them and take nothing away from the 3 wins they racked up against the L’s best team. Today was a bust, but they put up a darn good fight 3 out of 7 times. That’s more than you can say about some of the other teams that packed their bags for the summer.

May.4 at 7:46 pm

LA Lakers Blog says:
Celtics finally make it into round 2 while the Lakers take a 1-0 lead against Utah. I’d say the Lakers are a bit ahead of schedule…

May.4 at 7:49 pm

John D says:
Gotta give it up to the Hawks. I thought the series would go 5 games at most. I just hope the Celtics can keep this momentum going against the Cavs. This is the type of performance I’ve been used to seeing all season long from the C’s.

May.4 at 8:06 pm

Joel O's says:
Truly, the Hawks have made this series special. There isn’t any glory in beating a weaker opponent, and neither is there shame in losing to a stronger one. The Hawks went out and made Boston bleed for 7 games. That’s pretty damn amazing, and it sure has gained them the respect of not just Atlanta, but the world.

May.4 at 8:09 pm

Maurice Garland says:
yeah, not the Game 7 i hoped for…i was hoping to see some ‘88 deja vu, except in our favor this time…but man…this past week has been great…ive been hoarse almost everyday this week from either going to all 3 of the home playoff games and yelling or screaming at the TV for games 5 and 7. but yeah, this has been great…i even went to the club on friday with my Hawks hat, foam fan finger and towel from the game…i was happy to see that i wasnt the only deranged fan in the building who came straight from the game…after getting decent seats for games 3 and 4, i was mad that i ended up in the damn near the nose bleeds for game 6 because of so many “new” fans buying tickets up…but i was glad to see that these “new” fans actually came and supported to the best of their abilities…maybe they werent bandwagoners after all…hell, i was even happy that my friends were actually trying to buy my tix off me, that hasnt happened since ive been a grown man… that said, i think BK might have bought himself some more time to get these key signings done and bring in another formidable big man… woody, not so sure, embarassing away losses like we’ve had comes down to coaching at the end of the day…just like how the Braves postseason failures are a result of B. Cox’s stubborn management style…. but, im glad to see the Hawks giving the city something to cheer for…lord knows the A needs it, especially with trainwreck that is the Falcons and the Braves turning their back on the “working class” people in this city.

May.4 at 8:10 pm

Joel O's says:
Whatever Boston’s defense is, I don’t think its THAT great. They’re just really “long” at every important position - KG down low, Posey on the wing and Rondo at the point. The Pistons and Spurs defenses, in my opinion, are a notch above Boston’s. Boston couldn’t stop Josh Smith or JJ down the stretch… how are they gonna stop Lebron?

May.4 at 8:14 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
If just making the playoffs changed a team’s culture the Chicago Bulls wouldn’t be sitting home right now. When they finally made it back to the playoffs two years ago–and made it to the second round last year–I thought they’d finally turned the corner. Yep, they turned the corner all right.

May.4 at 8:16 pm

Maurice Garland says:
now that youve said it russ….that reminded me…im hoping and praying these Hawks dont end up like those 96-97 Washington Bullets that got swept by the Bulls in the playoffs…they disappeared from the postseason for 8 years after that.

May.4 at 8:26 pm

Joel O's says:
@Russ: Maybe the Bulls’ recent playoff success was in itself an aberration. On hindsight, I guess everyone can say that the Bulls were a fundamentally flawed team that really needed to play their offensive sets perfectly every single game to win. But back then it really did seem like the Bulls had turned a corner, and that Skiles’ tough-guy approach was making them into a perennial contender.

May.4 at 8:32 pm

BuckshotLefunkstiggity says:
Russ you are stealing money from Slam if you mean what you say. The Bulls had coaching turmoil, major roster shakeups, in team fighting, Wallace anchoring down morale, financial issues with 2 core players, Gordon wanting to start, Duhon’s unparalled partying (here I exclude Tarpley and Lloyd Daniels)and 10 other toxic ingredients that I won’t mention here. You cannot be so ignorant. Their problems were with front office above all. Which is why, I repeat, this is the single most important offseason for Lang’s Hawks since John Battle inked that “K-Swiss” shoe deal in 89. From a front office point of view: contracts, free agent aquisitions, coaching stability, etc. That whole team pushed past the Heat but they hated Skiles, and they resented each other. (ps, are you an unpaid intern Russ?).

May.4 at 8:33 pm

Co Co says:
The Hawks have some questions that are going to have to be answered so we really won’t know if they turned a corner until we see what they do withj the Josh’s and the coach. Joe is only under contract for 2 more seasons. If they let both of the Josh’s go this team will take about 12 steps backwards.

May.4 at 8:40 pm

RV says:
why is Boston’s arena so damn bright?

May.4 at 8:56 pm

Myung says:
I agree, Co Co… those are the two biggest things: dealing with the two josh’s and coach woodson. the third biggest thing is whether to bring back billy knight again. the OTHER thing that not too many people are talking about is something that’s been worrying me for a minute now: Joe playing in the olympics. While there are a few exceptions to the rule, most of the guys who rep the national team tend to slump or get injured the following season. You mix that with the fact that Joe already played a TON of minutes this past year, and it might be tough for us to expect him to carry the load next season. We’ll see what happens… but I’ve never been this anxious about an offseason in quite some time.

May.4 at 9:18 pm

Leon Michaels says:
Wow the Celtics finally won the series! If they had this much trouble with Atlanta, what is it going to be like playing against LeBron and the Cavaliers? You know LeBron has to be saying to himself, “We’ve got a real chance to beat this guys and get back to the Conference finals.”

May.4 at 9:20 pm

RV says:
the celtics simply lost their swagger, props to the hawks for what they did, but i think the celtic’s letdown was a fluke

May.4 at 9:21 pm

Co Co says:
A fluke is one game, not 3….

May.4 at 9:26 pm

RV says:
i knew the hawk’s fan were gonna jump on me after i mentioned fluke, but that’s why i gave props to the hawks for their side of things and said the fluke was the celtics end, call it a triple fluke, but its 3 games against the same team, its similar to what happened to Utah and the pistons, just one extra loss.

May.4 at 10:48 pm

RedRum says:
@Buckshot I personally think that last year’s Pistons were a better team that this year’s Celtics. And they still are. And if Johnson can win 3 games for the Hawks, I think Lebron can win 4 for the Cavs.

May.5 at 12:14 am

c’mon now, its not like he talked about their momma or made an obscene gesture, he just slashed his throat, plus, its KG, its not a scrub like Stevenson who’s on a mediocre team.

May.5 at 1:04 am

Reggie Evans says:
Isn’t the throat slashing gesture a suspension-worthy thing? I thought they were banned that several years ago.

May.5 at 1:04 am

Reggie Evans says:
Whoa grammar alert: I thought they banned the throat slashing years ago, with a penalty of suspension.

May.5 at 1:17 am

Lang Whitaker says:
I think the throat-slashing thing was banned in the NFL, not the NBA.

May.5 at 1:26 am

Stevenson got fined for it in a game against the Cavs, so I guess KG should feel $25,000 lighter by tomorrow…Should.

Who still think this Boston team have any chance at a championship this year? Anybody?

May.5 at 2:04 am

Hursty says:
me. the hawks did everyone proud. :)

May.5 at 2:19 am

RV says:
If anything, this may help them in the long run, its an early wake up call, better now than in the conf finals or finals. They sre still in the east afterall, wouldn’t mind seeing a Lakers-celtics final

May.5 at 2:56 am

Solito says:
I think the league is officiating towards a Lakers / Celtics final. From a corporate/profit standpoint, the Spurs are not a prime investment. Becaue they don’t generate any revenue outside of their market (even if Argentina is added to it), neither do the Pistons, Cavs, Magic, Jazz and Hornets. As long as the refs can do from within the games parameters, they will…

May.5 at 3:00 am

Solito says:
But darn, the Hawks were fun to watch! Did I jump on that Hawks bandwagon? YESSIR! I hope they can build on that…

May.5 at 3:05 am

Russ Bengtson says:
I’m still not sold on corner-turning in one playoff appearance (especially a 37-win one). And a lot of that Bulls stuff was hindsight. Is Mike Woodson really the answer for the Hawks? Will they be willing to throw a LOT of money at Josh Smith? Will the Nets and Bulls be as unspeakably bad next year? I feel like the Hawks need at least one more vet (preferably in the frontcourt) to succeed, will they pick up the right one? I think this playoff run was great for the team and the city, but at the same time I don’t think it’s an indicator of future success.

May.5 at 3:08 am

what says:
They are STARTING to turn the corner, but they can only finish turning it with the right offseason moves. In other words, firing Woody and keeping Josh Smith.

“I think this playoff run was great for the team and the city, but at the same time I don’t think it’s an indicator of future success.” I agree.

May.5 at 5:22 am

Tariq says:
I don’t know if anyone noticed, but when they should Mike Woodson talking to the team in the locker room, you could see Josh Smith in the background sitting in front of his locker, and in the locker was an item that caught my eye: A yellow Golden State “We Believe” T-Shirt. I thought that was cool.

May.5 at 5:23 am

May.5 at 5:24 am

Tariq says:
Chillz should NOT be traded. Everyone who admonished Lang for giving him a third-place Sixth Man vote should apologize profusely.

May.5 at 7:21 am

Myung says:
I agree with Russ bc of all the questions that need to be answered during the offseason. We are not a stable up-and-coming team. While we’ve made progress in the past 4 years (from 13 to 26 to 30 to 37 wins), the upward trend will continue only if everything goes smoothly this summer. The advantage to brining back BK and Woody is continuity and familiarity. The disadvantage to bringing back Woody is, he has a 0.323 winning percentage in 4 years and is, for all intents and purposes, a poor head coach.

May.5 at 7:24 am

Myung says:
As much as I’ve vocally challenged Josh Smith’s status as a superstar (basically, I don’t think he is one), I won’t be mad if we re-up him, as long as we don’t give him max money. He should get as much as Iguodala and Deng get. Childress should definitely be re-upped. And of course if we do a sign and trade with Josh Smith, I won’t be bad either (as long as we get a defensive minded center so Al can move to PF). This isn’t to say we WON’T improve upon this year, but I think Russ is correct in pointing out the potential similarities to this team and the Bulls team of about 3 seasons ago.

Hawks have a great core to build on. I don’t think Bibby is the answer at PG. If he’s not hitting his shots, what good is he? Maybe Law can step up.
As far as the calls go in Game 7, I’d say the Hawks definitely got the benefit of the wistles in a few games, so they have no right (and didn’t) to complain about #7. The FT disparity for the series went in the Hawks favor.
