Feeling a Draft: The Overrated and Underrated
Buy low, sell high!
By Jeff Fox
The NBA draft is very similar to the stock market. While investors keep an eye out for undervalued stock and try to avoid the overvalued ones, NBA GMs are the same. The only difference is they aren’t investing in companies - their commodity is seven-footers with wingspans like pterodactyls. While the good traders get rich off the market by capitalizing on underpriced stock, the not so fortunate end up jumping out of windows or living in a van down by the river. NBA GMs are similar – the good ones find Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Michael Redd and Gilbert Arenas in the late parts of the draft. The bad ones prefer Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan or Michael Olowokandi over Dirk Nowitzki.
So to help GMs keep their jobs, here are a few tips on some of the most overrated and underrated prospects in this June’s draft.
Underrated
O.J. Mayo
Projected Draft Range: Pick 3 to 7
Ovington J’Anthony Mayo is going to be a star in the NBA. Projected as future number one overall pick in the draft since he was still rocking Pampers, all the time in the limelight seems to have turned some people off of the prodigy. Call it a Vitamin C overdose. The positive of all the O.J. hating is that it has probably motivated him to be an even better baller. No complaints from this corner if he ends up going at pick three (even though it is a bit surprising that he isn’t even being considered as a potential pick at slots one or two), but if he slips out of the top three like a lot of mock drafts predict, some GMs will have some ‘splaining to do.
Darrell Arthur
Projected Draft Range: Pick 9 to 16
It’s true that Arthur doesn’t have the star power that Mayo does, but if he slips out of the lottery as some people have projected it would be a mistake. He is long, athletic and strong with a good skill set. The fact that other bigs like Kevin Love, DeAndre Jordan and Kosta Koufos are projected to get snatched up ahead of him is wrong.
Chris Douglas-Roberts
Projected Draft Range: Pick 15 to 27
A playoff team from this past season is going to be very happy with this year’s draft. CDR is projected to go somewhere in the 20s in the draft, meaning a good team is going to get a very good player. Douglas-Roberts has the makings of a solid player with the potential to be a star.
Ty Lawson
Projected Draft Range: Pick 24 to 29
Yes, his height will hinder him in the NBA, but with his roadrunner speed and solid assist to turnover ratio, Lawson should have a long NBA career.
Overrated
Kevin Love
Projected Draft Range: Pick 5 to 14
We still haven’t figured out the enigma that is Kevin Love in this year’s draft. Yes he is reportedly losing fat and working on his agility, but still, he doesn’t have NBA length, athleticism, speed or jumping ability. He may turn out to be a solid NBA player, but picking him at number five, with Mayo, possibly still on the board? Someone’s getting fired over that.
DeAndre Jordan
Projected Draft Range: Pick 10 to 19
NBA GMs have a very unhealthy love affair with seven-footers. You want proof? Next time you’re on the street and bump into Michael Olowokandi or Patrick O’Bryant, whip out your measuring tape and check their heights. Not to say that Jordan will be a complete NBA bust, but he only had four double-digit scoring games for the Aggies since the calendar turned to 2008. Picking him in the top 10 might be a bit of a stretch.
JaVale McGee
Projected Draft Range: Pick 10 to 20
Just reread the part above about Jordan, except add in a very skinny frame, inexperience and the fact that he played in a non-power conference. Now you get the idea about McGee.

I’m not sure about Mayo. Mayo is a wildcard to me. If he has the drive to be an elite player, then he will become one. If not, then he will be an average player. Will Mayo develop a D. Wade type game or will he develop a Larry Hughes type game?

Ty Lawson could become another Jameer Nelson. They’re about the same height and build.

The Last Kings Fan says:
A team with a really fast poing guard should be looking at Love. Can you imagine him throwing outlet passes to Steve Nash? Plus, Love knows what he’s doing; I think it was in the second round of the tournament that, when UCLA needed him to, parked under the basket and got easy points.
May.30 at 1:39 pm
TADOne says:
I completely agree with your assessment that a GM would need to be fired if they pick Love over Mayo. While I am not the biggest Mayo fan, I just don’t get the infatuation some people have with Love.
May.30 at 1:42 pm
TADOne says:
I have also let my feelings be known about CDR, but I will say them again. I’m not quite sure why 20 plus teams would pass him over? Honestly though, I hope it happens and the Pistons luck into him. But for whatever reason, there is a rumor that Detroit is in love with DJ White?
May.30 at 1:49 pm
Silky Slim says:
K. Love has the size, but lacks the speed, strength, and athleticism needed to become an elite player in the league. I can see him an a sixth man role.
May.30 at 1:52 pm
Silky Slim says:
@TADOne: D.J. White is my sleeper pick. I think his game is so underrated.
May.30 at 2:02 pm
TADOne says:
Well, Joe D. really seems to like D.J. White and is rumored to have told him that if he is still available when Detroit picks, then the Pistons are taking him. Thing is, they already have a similiar player to him in Maxiell.
May.30 at 2:06 pm
Silky Slim says:
I agree. Dyess and J. Max play the same position as White. Could Joe D. be making personnel moves this offseason?
May.30 at 2:09 pm
Jukai says:
First off, Darrel Arthur needs to stay exactly where he is. Where is this good skill set you talk about? I haven’t seen it this entire NCAA season.
May.30 at 2:10 pm
TADOne says:
Well, if Detroit doesn’t make it to the finals, that is the popular opinion. Then again, Dyess is only signed thru next season and Sheed 2011, I think. I’d rather have CDR if he is available, because he can backup both Tay and Rip, and eventually take over for Rip. A Stuckey/CDR backcourt would be incredible.
May.30 at 2:10 pm
Jukai says:
This is my impression of Arthur when he gets the ball in the mid-post: “look confused, dribble, lose dribble, regain ball, look confused, foul someone”
May.30 at 2:12 pm
TADOne says:
I can honestly say I have only seen Darrell Arthur play once all season, and that was in the championship game. He looked good from what I saw, but nothing spectacular.
May.30 at 2:14 pm
Jukai says:
and does anyone else think Jeryldd Bayless is way overrated too?? Everyone says the guy’s gonna go fourth… Why does Gordon’s draft chances go way down when he has a crappy second half of the year, but Bayless actually RISES? The guy is a Barbosa with a smaller repertoire of shots… Everyone blames Wise and the disaster that happened with the coaching for Arizona’s downright year long collapse, but I’m throwing a lot on Bayless.

and we don’t care if he’s athletic per se. we have plenty of athletes on this team. what we don’t have is a big body type. love has good post moves. no he’s not 6′10 and yeah he’ll need to get in the 250’s/240’s to be really effective but i think he’s someone who can help us. problem of course is that he’ll prob be gone when we pick.
May.30 at 2:34 pm
Mark says:
While I agree Love isn’t on mayo’s level from a talent standpoint, and will never be the NBA player Mayo is, you do (even this high in the draft) have to take team needs into account. Look at picks 3, 4 and 5. Minnesota is still banking on Randy Foye and Brewer as their future backcourt, and need to get Big Al soem down low help (especially on D)so theyll be looking at Lopez and Love. Seattle picked two 2/3’s last year in Durant and Green, and to use Mayo as a pure point is not maximizing his abilities. Sure, he’d be nice in Seattle, but do you really want an allegedly egotistic “point guard” running a team that feature two (potentially) deadly wing players? Bayless is a better fit for them at the point. And Memphis needs size, straight up and down. They have 3 young points and Miller and Gay are a strong 2-3 combo. They have nothing up front, so they’ll be looking at Love, Lopez, Arthur, Randolph…big men. So realistically, Mayo will likely go 6 or 7 to the Knicks or Clips, who could both use him well. this isnt to say he cant get picked higher, but if those 3-5 teams are looking to fill needs, Mayo likely isn’t the pick, and rightfully so.

Nobody has any idea how good any of these guys will be in the League. They’re ALL f*cking wild cards. Michael Jordan, Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, and Chris Paul weren’t No. 1 picks, but Kwame Brown, Michael Olowokandi and Pervis Ellison were. The guys who run the teams don’t really know what they’re doing. Let’s not pretend we do either.
May.30 at 3:05 pm
Ryan Jones says:
Sorry. I just don’t like the free exchange of opinions. It’s unseemly.
May.30 at 3:21 pm
Jukai says:
Pervis Ellison was actually a damn good player. He just had the bone durability of my grand mother. And no offense Ryan, but I’m not sure where you’re coming from here. We do have an “idea” of how good these guys will be in the league, through minor things like “NCAA Basketball” and “pre-draft camps” and minor things like that. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a Mayo rant to write.
May.30 at 3:23 pm
E. Sneed says:
haha Ryan, I second that!
May.30 at 3:23 pm
Jukai says:
Mark, I totally disagree with your assessment of Seattle. Bayless isn’t a good fit at all. I don’t know where this Bayless love is coming from. I honestly think Mayo would be a better fit in Seattle than Bayless will be…. I mean, having Mayo and Durant at one and two sounds like a recipe for absolute ball-hogging disaster, but what if it works? I mean, we’re talking two mind blowing players that both have the possibility of being HoF class. If it doesn’t work out after a year or two? You have a 20-something boundless potential player to be traded to whoever in the league needs him.

Ryan Jones says:
Jukai, as always, I’m coming from a land called Smart Ass. I live there. It’s nice. Don’t come visit.
The point is that people who get paid a lot of money to do this for a living have been getting it wrong for years, whether it’s the examples mentioned, or the decisions to take, say, Adam Morrison ahead of Brandon Roy, or Andrew Bogut ahead of Chris Paul, or Luke Jackson ahead of Josh Smith, or Darko Milicic ahead of Carmelo Anthony AND Chris Bosh AND Dwyane Wade AND David West AND Kendrick Perkins AND Leandro Barbosa AND Josh Howard. (Man, that draft gets better all the time). Hence, as stated, despite our best guesses and hunches and the very occasional “sure thing,” we (ahem) HAVE NO IDEA HOW GOOD ANY OF THESE GUYS WILL BE IN THE LEAGUE.
Thank you.

Kevin Love is absolutely overrated by a lot of people. He’s also totally underrated by a lot of people. I think he’s got a very good chance of being a very good player — f*cking Jamaal Magloire made the All-Star Game once or twice, I think Kevin’s got the potential to be better than him. Or maybe he really is too slow and earthbound and soft to be anything more than the third Collins twin. I don’t think so, but who knows?
May.30 at 4:21 pm
jbn74sb says:
Kevin Love already has a higher basketball IQ than just about the entire league. Add that to the fact that the guy has got more country strength than just about everyone else, and he will be fine.

Jones, you convinced me. Let’s take away draft predictions, pre-season team predictions, playolff predictions, all-star predictions, player movement predictions, coaching predictions, rumors, acolade predictions, rumors. That also means you have to shut up about Lebron and wait for him to develop.

Joel O's says:
And people doubting CDR really somehow reminds me of how nobody took Josh Howard seriously. Do-it-all small forward who can score on anyone… what don’t people see? He’s probably gonna be ready to contribute rightaway on any team that drafts him.
May.30 at 7:58 pm
Cub Buenning says:
Brandon, besides the fact that Love’s one year in college was better than any of Collison’s, Love’s strength and agility skew me to the side of Love. They are similar, however.
I heard that Love was good at outlet passes and full-court shots.
May.30 at 8:54 pm
Brandon Hoffman says:
@ Cub - With all due respect, everyone in the NBA is agile and strong. Two things concern me about Love. 1. He’s short for a power forward. 2. He doesn’t have the leaping ability to compensate for his height.

Dacre says:
No 7 footer ever provides a current 6th man role (Kevin McHale may have come off the bench but thats because he didn’t like bright lights)…so Kevin Love would not be used in that role…. He’ll be awesome you watch. He can hit an outside shot, bang low…it’s Dino Raja the second coming!!!!

Trust me…Mayo is not ready for NBA stardom. The guy is maybe 6′3″ and couldn’t even play point in college. He is purely a jump shooter and because of a lack of hops doesn’t get points in the paint. He shies away from contact and shot the least amount of free throws on his team. I’ve said this before, but physically he’s built like Baron Davis/Steve Francis, but without the explosiveness and a step slower. On the flip, he is a great college player, who can lock people down when he dedicates himself and he is willing to take the big shot when it counts. Best case scenario, He’s the next Joe Dumars. At this point I think the next Sebastian Telfair is more likely.
Brook Lopez..Brook Lopez…Brook Lopez…Brook Lopez…Brook Lopez…Brook Lopez…Brook Lopez…Brook Lopez…Brook Lopez…Brook Lopez…Brook Lopez..

DJ Augustin went to my bro’s hs when he relocated to Houston after Katrina. I saw Rose vs Rice, U of Houston & in the regional vs MSU/Texas. Augustin could not get off a shot & had trouble w/his handle under the Memphis pressure. Him going to PHX woudlnt surprise b/c he’d likely get owned on D like his wouldbe mentor. I bet people overlook CDR & he ends up in San Antonio, Detroit or Utah & makes them pay for years. Jordan apparently had discipline & work ethic issues at A&M, not good. Someone will take him on physical spec tho.

If one of Love’s major selling points is his outlet passing ability, the long fast-break filling outlet passes - why would any even bring this into the equation in the pro’s? This is the NBA not college. Not high school. Those over the top passes are simply not available at the pro level. Players are too athletic and too experienced and skilled to give up those types of ‘rookie’ transitions. I’m not saying good hands and a high basketball IQ are not going to help him, but his lack of size and athleticism are going to be a MAJOR issue at the next level. Who is he going to guard in the NBA?

Ty lawson will have a long NBA carrer because on e he can run like lighting, and also he can p;ay with anyone that can finish. Also Mayo is a wildcard because if he wants to be great he can, but right now hw isn’t showing us that. He can shoot the jumper and he also has great strength to get to the rim. But I do wonder about his deffense.
May.31 at 1:06 pm
I don't know you says:
Lawson will have a great future in the NBA because of his lightning speed and because his ability to see the court and dish the rock. All he needs is someone to finish for him. Mayo though has the ability to become a great but it looks like right now he doesn’t want to be one. Also doews O.J. even have a deffensive game. But a great ability that he has is his strength to get to the basket and he also can shoot that ball.

LAN- hes got no post skills, plays against only one true centre in Anstey in the NBL, has no concept of passing out of the double, hes not superathletic, and hes short for a centre-6-10 or whatever. How would he be a better pick than say, JJ Hickson from NC State? Jawai has a soft touch around the hoop but hes got so much to learn before the NBA comes calling, scouts are looking at him for when hes 22 (like Newley) at 20 he has the skills of an 18yr old freshmen. hes a project and he cant dominate games. I like him. I really do but hes not quite ready, mid to late 2nd round pick me thinks.

Kevin Love….OVERRATED? Which player were you guys watching. although Psycho T was the best big man in the nation, but Kevin Love was the most skilled big man in the nation. He is a low post player who has moves in the post, has a big body, can pass effectively(a lost art for big men) and can start the fastbreak with his outlet passes. He is a fudamentally sound big man and will definitely be a player in the League. Although not overly athletic or quick, his basketball IQ is too high to pass on. I agree with the Kevin Mchale comparison. Kevin Love is definietly worth a top five pick. Some of yall need to pay attention!!!!!

For all you Arthur haters ive seen him play almost half the season he is the most talented low post scorer besides michael beasly in this draft. His turnaround jumpers and post moves resemble those of kg. has a good mid range jumper and is a better defender than given credit. As for Kevin Love he isnt as unathletic as people give him credit he had a great 35 inch vert and panned out pretty well on the other test. Also has legit nba 3 point range Just check out his workout with memphis

Mike Padmore says:
The draft can be somewhat of a crapshoot. Nobody really has much of an idea of who will turn out to be what. My favorite player to look at in this draft is Ty Lawson. He is projected on here to go 24-29 in the draft, which is probably accurate to what will happen. Does he deserve to be? I don’t think so. NBA GM’s these days are seem to be afraid to take PG’s early in the draft and instead invest in 7 footers who bust (see Nicholas Tskitishvili, Kwame Brown, Michael Olowokandi, the list goes on). Sure, Mike Conley and Chris Paul were both drafted top 10 but that was a rarity of late. Lawson is an end to end lock up defender, can push the ball in transition, and finds ways to get everyone involved. His only flaw is shooting the ball. But even Paul and Conley were not known as tremedous shooters coming into the draft. They were drafted on their abilty to run an offense which is what Lawson can do. If a team picks up Lawson out of the Lottery, I would consider it a huge steal.
