Did Robert Horry Add to His ‘Cheap Shot Artist’ Legend?

by Marcel Mutoni

The Spurs disposed of the Hornets in a do-or-die Game Six last night, but the major story out of that game was Robert Horry forcing David West to leave the game in the fourth quarter, after the Hornets forward aggravated a back injury.

There is much debate as to whether or not Horry’s blow to West’s creaky back was a clean basketball play, or if it was a standard-issue Robert Horry Cheap Shot.

“I’m not real OK with it,” Hornets head coach Bryon Scott said. “But if I didn’t know Robert on a personal level, I’d say that was a dirty shot. Yeah, if I didn’t know him the way I know him, I’d say it was a cheap shot.”

You’re confusing me, coach. Was it a cheap shot, or not?

No one can say for sure how effective West and his back will be in Game Seven on Monday night, and though the pick seemed innocuous enough, Horry does have a history of playing a notoriously pivotal role in big Playoff games.

Anyhow, since Lord Byron can’t seem to make up his mind, here’s the video evidence, you make the call.

Are you serious? That wasn’t cheap at all, it’s just good, hard-playoff basketball. Now what happens - If the Spurs win the championship again this year are the haters going to say it was “tainted” like they did when we murked the Suns? Ridiculous, not a cheap shot at all.

west was already hurt. he could have reagrevated it by simply just running down the court… clean pick

it wasnt a cheap shot, but looks like Horry is always in the “wrong” place at the “wrong” time.. haha

Cheap Shot!!!…..if u look at the clip Manu was throwing Horry a alley oop but Horry instead was setting a pick for nobody!!!

May.16 at 10:15 am

Diesel says:
Obviously none of you actually play basketball. Anytime someone’s in the air and you push them its a cheap shot (see Lebron v Haywood). Let alone when you know they have a back problem and you stick your elbows out to pick them in mid air FROM BEHIND. EXTREMELY CHEAP. He needs to retire because his lucky shot days are long gone. All he’s doing now is tarnishing his image.

that was just a regular pick.. and bad luck for west.. but even if horry did it deliberately it’s not a cheap shot, just a shot.
if west played hurt, he should have expected the opponent to attack him where it hurts, maybe with hard picks..
it’s more of a cheap shot from byron scott, with these comments.

May.16 at 10:26 am

marcgar says:
LAN: your an idiot spurs play great basketball. real sports players and fans know what a good basketball is and the spurs play great basketball DIESLE: you must basketball like a pansie. it was a clean pick west jumped into him and horry just kept his ground

C’mon if this wasn’t the Spurs would we even be having this convcersation? its just like hack a shaq wasn’t a problem until we started using it against the NBA darling, Phoenix. We beat them boys bad and aren’t you supposed to exploit the weaknesses/injuries of your opponent in EVERY SPORT? Also, Detroit was hammering Dwight’s hand every time he got the ball, isn’t that “dirty” in the same way?

Harry15 says:
The spurs are a bunch of flop artists especially ginobli…parker and duncan whine to referees more than anybody ive ever seen….bowen is just an ugly sob who plays dirty at times and i have no respect for horry after last year costing the suns a championship…i can guarantee u that game 7 in new orleans somebody on the spurs is gonna get takin out

May.16 at 10:47 am

marcgar says:
riggs: its the playoffs not a recreational game. everyone is only seeing what they want to see. like i’ve said thousands of times look how dirty paul is

May.16 at 10:49 am

I also thought it’s just a screen until I notice that Horry was actually leaning toward instead of standing straight.
Anywayz, it’s the crowd chanting that makes me feel that the Spurs’ fan are dirty too.

I agree with vannshy: chandler did worse to parker in G4 and nobody cared. did he check if parker was ok? no. do players check if their opponents are ok when it seems like they are injured? no. Not something I like, but that’s playoffs basketball.

May.16 at 10:56 am

the crowd shouldnt have chanted but they are just tired and fustrated of seeing paul play dirty and not getting critsised by anyone and getting away with it.

Robert Horry knows what he is doing. I think it was a cheap shot to the core but he didn’t make it out to look that way and he is such a good guy nobody would think he would do something like that. If you look back at some games, he does commit cheap shots.

May.16 at 11:12 am

marcgar says:
riggs: you’d be too busy crying about your back to kick anyones ass. its the playoffs its gonna get physical. nobody said anything when chandler hip checked parker

May.16 at 11:14 am

seand says:
Dirty. If you watch the video, Horry not only sets his forearms low to hit him in the small of the back but also lurches forward into West to ensure the contact. He is not covering his crotch to protect himself as guys normally to that are setting screens. I used to like Robert Horry but I’ve lost all respect. He doesn’t hit shots anymore and the only reason he is in the league is to foul.

May.16 at 11:24 am

DavidSpurns says:
Can you really say that the Spurs…. with their backs against the wall .. don’t go for the cheap shot ? This has been known for years!! But this time the end game is away and the refs will certainly be ready for the Bruce Bowen, Robert Horry and I bet they will even get some young blood in there. Udoka will become s Spurs Man in game seven.

May.16 at 11:29 am

im pretty sure tony parker went crying to the refs, and lol @ crying, im not you buddy.

May.16 at 11:34 am

Although I hate the Spurs, I have to say that it wasn’t a cheap shot. It was just a block for Manu Ginobili. If David West wasn’t already injured to begin with, we wouldn’t be talkin about this story.

Bob says:
All of you “babies” need to lay off just cause you can’t handle the “old” veteran Spurs. THIS IS PLAYOFF BASKETBALL!!!! Robert Horry is one of the best players EVER! More playoff appearances than Wilt Chamberlain!

William says:
If it was Tim Duncan and not Robert Horry would we even be having this debate? Their playing to win, not a scrimmage or a pick up game, hope West plays in game 7 and the Spurs fans who chanted ‘Horry’ don’t deserve to see the Spurs win, show some class you losers.

May.16 at 11:38 am

vmcb says:
Whats up with all the SA fans in here this morning? Anyways, Horry leaned into West; he definitely knew what he was doing. Furthermore, the idiot fans chanting “Horry! Horry!” just made it worse. The entire city of San Antonio must be dirty!

iLL wiLL says:
It would be interesting if Bonzi Wells pulled a Robert Horry on Manu Ginobili or Tony Parker in game 7 with a hockey-like move.

May.16 at 11:45 am

Diesel says:
Marcgar you must be some fat little sh*t of a man that can’t play and tries to make the most of his “hustle”. I’m all for tough hard play if its in context of the game. Throwing an elbow on a pick from behind with no real context to the play is a cheap shot.

May.16 at 11:54 am

marcgar says:
diesel: i’m just not a pansie like you. when i play, if i give hard picks i’ll take hard picks. if the same play happend to where duncan got hurt you would’nt be crying about it would you?

May.16 at 12:01 pm

May.16 at 12:02 pm

DavidSpurns says:
Datakiller your saying that since this type of play happened back in the day that it should still be allowed today ? Dude.. what kind of argument is that ? The game has evolved since then. Come on ! It’s so easy even you can do it !! Sorry if I made you throw your stone wheel away.

May.16 at 12:04 pm

Diesel says:
Marcgar, I’ll take a hard pick and give a hard pick all day…if it makes sense in the game. Horry wasn’t setting a pick for a driving player - West jumped for the ball and Horry picked him on the way down. If you can watch that clip and let me know how the pick would have helped that offensive set, I’ll admitt I’m wrong. And yes, if it did happen to Duncan, I would say its cheap.

May.16 at 12:06 pm

RV says:
No one will ever know if Horry had been waiting for the right moment to give West’s back a shove, but if anything it was a physical play, Horry went out there looking to push people around, set a tone, not be soft, i say that because his pick is not a natural play to make in that situation, you box the guy out with your back to keep him from advancing, he had something else in mind when he set that pick than just freeing up Manu.

May.16 at 12:11 pm

RV says:
also, anyone who says Horry just stood there setting the pick and waited for West is not seeing straight, horry didn’t set the pick standing straight up, his upper body was leaning forward, if that play was closer to the ball on the perimeter it would be an offensive foul half the time.

May.16 at 12:13 pm

marcgar says:
Diesle: as a fan of the game and having the love for the playoffs i do belive it wasnt intentional. it didnt look intentional but these are pros and like RV said horry was looking to be tough and push people. it doesnt look intentional cause west jumped back towards horry a little not knowing horry was there. horry was there to set a pick but ginobili took the shot and horry just stood his ground

May.16 at 12:17 pm

Diesel says:
I understand playing tough in the playoffs, but with a 20 point lead at that stage of the game, there’s no need for it. And like RV said, once Manu shot it, Horry should have boxed out for the rebound. He had his back to the basket still concentrating on West.

May.16 at 12:20 pm

marcgar says:
I’ll agree to that. i dont think he was trying to take him out of the series he just want to be rough

In a word: yes. Bob lost his 3-ball last year and has become Bowen’s lackey. What a waste. Ala Mark Jackson: “Come on Big Shot Brob: you’re better that that.”

May.16 at 12:36 pm

TonyG says:
of course Horry knew what he was doing, but it was a clean play..if you’re so hurt that you can’t handle a pick, why are you even playing? NBA fans are such pussies..

May.16 at 12:43 pm

truetruth says:
Horry was setting a pick to allow Ginobili to cut behind him to the basket, which is a legal move. He had no way to know that West would throw himself upward in the air at him. West did this to himself. Horry leaned forward exactly like you are supposed to do to keep the player you are picking from knocking you down. He would have been an idiot to stand up perfectly straight when he knew West was about to try to back over him. It wouldn’t have even been called a foul if West hadn’t dropped to the floor. Still, Spurs fans shouldn’t have chanted “Horry”. Of course West shouldn’t have even been on the court if his back is that fragile especially since his team was already down 21 points in the fourth quarter. And Scott is COY? In any case, the Hornets fans began the bad sportsmanship in this series by booing the Spurs for the ENTIRE game EVERY game, but no one even mentions that…

May.16 at 12:51 pm

the birdman says:
As hard as it is (that’s what she said) to say, it looks like Horry might have done that intentionally. It dosen’t really make sense to set a pick in that situation - GINOBILI didn’t have his man beat, and Horry wasn’t sealing his man or anything - no other real explaination. Lord Byron is right - hard to make a call, but Horry does have a history.

May.16 at 12:52 pm

RV says:
it wasn’t just a “pick”, it was a blind pick taken in mid-air, if everyone that was hurt sat out afraid to get hit in that certain spot then a lot of things would change. clean doesn’t equal legal

warr says:
this” the” league, and stern making it soft whoever thinks thats a cheap shot their right it is.that’s basketball they playing to be champs some of u dudes crazy yall don’t play ball yall watch basketball if thats ducan what u think the hornets going to do come on man. WNBA start saturday for some of yall.

May.16 at 12:54 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Given Brob’s history, it was a cheap shot. Especially since the game was long since decided.

May.16 at 12:56 pm

Kadavour says:
Horry was setting up the screen before West jumped. It was just an unfortunate play, but I don’t think it was dirty and intentional. Doc Rivers said that Kobe’s pinky is a bullseye and that guys are going to attack injuries. So it’s no different in this case. West’s back was a bullseye and he ran into an unfortunate screen.

May.16 at 1:03 pm

truetruth says:
Ginobili is under no obligation to make the cut just because Horry sets a pick. That doesn’t make the pick any less valid. One of Ginobili’s favorite moves is a ball fake followed by a drive, which is what Horry thought was about to happen. Just because Ginobili decided on a different course of action does not entitle you to play revisionist history with the facts.

May.16 at 1:07 pm

tenorca says:
Was that even English, Warr? And to all the people who are shouting in their manly voices “this is the NBA, dude should be able to handle it,” remember he played an entire (phenomenal) game with a bad back before Brob make his “nice hard playoff pick.” And these are the Spurs, people. If a rule can be bent, it will be bent. If an elbow can be thrown or a man can be kicked while he’s on the ground, it will happen.

May.16 at 1:13 pm

Dale Wittig says:
Agree with Tenorca, Horry’s bigshot days are behind him. Funny thing is, both he and Scott are big-time ring collectors. Both were good role players who now need to show off their rings to make them feel bigger than they were. Cheap-shot? Hell yeah, he’s crafty and vindictive and will do anything to get the most rings ever. Really great players, like Patrick Ewing, don’t need rings to make them feel important. I used to like watching Horry play for the Rockets and the Lakers, now he’s just a hungry ghost. I hope Udoka doesn’t learn the wrong things from him. Right now Ime is pretty fine, I’m just afraid Pop is going to turn him into something along the lines of Bowen or the Spurs-era Horry.

May.16 at 1:19 pm

truetruth says:
Yeah, Horry does it for the rings he never wears. You know, the one’s he seems to remember are in a bathroom drawer somewhere… Idiocy.

If it was another player it would be no issue. Its that the Spurs could once again knock out the NBA media darling that upsets people. CP has gotten away with dropping Macho Man elbows the entire series, driving in knees up like the Mailman & everyone ignored it. It was a clean play, if anything Horry leaned up high & away from West’s lower back.

May.16 at 2:17 pm

John E. Sanford says:
Horry knew what he was doing, but that wasn’t a cheap shot. He was just seeing how dude would react to taking a hit. What is this baseball? Did he break some kind of code?

May.16 at 2:25 pm

Jukai says:
Might as well throw in my two cents: it was clearly a hard pick, it was meant so David West would feel it, no doubt. But I’d be betting Horry didn’t mean to injury West. so it was a “shot” but not really a “cheap shot”

May.16 at 2:37 pm

The Promise says:
Well, there were some calls in that 3rd quarter last night that should never been called, like that little sissy charge call Bruce Bowen got when CP3 drove in and scored on him. He was clearly inside the restricted area, so how can it be a charge? Manu sticks his head down and rams Peja, and the foul is on Peja. I have never gotten the point in that. He initiated the contact, yet he gets the fould call. But its nothing new, they have gotten these same calls for years now. But Im not worried, New Orleans is gonna close it in game 7 at home. Sterns team goes home, and all the normal basketball world is happy. But, getting to the shot that Horry gave Dwest last night, I think it was a little cheap, but not really dirty. It wasnt nearly as bad as the hip-check he gave Nash last year. Just gotta toughen up because the Spurs are gonna play rough. Thats just their thing. I got New Orleans 100-96.

May.16 at 2:49 pm

Diesel says:
Ha - No prob Marcgar

May.16 at 3:01 pm

truetruth says:
Paul pushed Bowens blocking arm away with his off-arm, the restricted area is irrelevant. Same thing Paul did later. Clearly a foul. The offensive player almost always initiates the contact, but almost always gets the call. For all teams. Stern doesn’t care who wins this series as long as they are really beat up before they play the Lakers.

May.16 at 3:09 pm

Did you see the play or just hear about it. A moron might think it was a cheap shot. Maybe all the championship rings Horry was wearing hurt his back.

This always seems to happen with Horry and the spurs, last time it was nash, now DWest. Its despicable how this guy can’t seem to play fair and let the game flow as it is, the spurs had already won there was no need for any additional malice, but Horry obviously had to go the extra mile to try and stop the hornets. And Spurs fans chanted his name. Game 7 monday night, expect retribution.

May.16 at 3:31 pm

Weekend Hoops? says:
More importantly, WHY THE HELL IS GAME 7 ON MONDAY and not Saturday or even Sunday. So if the Celtics/Cavs go to a game 7 they get one day of rest, but the Spurs/Hornets, who can’t be more than an hour away (flying time) get 3 days off??? What the hell? May.16 at 3:58 pm

DirtySpurs says:
Are the Spurs dirty? Specifically Bowen & Horry? Just watch these 9 clips (ALL of them, and the slow motion), and try to explain how they are not:
http://blog.nola.com/gladow/2008/05/history_lesson_top_10_spurs_qu.html If they were really good, they wouldn’t have to play this dirty, end of story. The Hornets are not dirty, they just have REAL team skill (no cheating necessary). It is really sad when OLD teams have to resort to this bad sportsmanship. Nothing wrong with playing rough, but injuring other players on purpose is CHEATING. Bring on Game 7, and get the slow motion cameras ready.

Hey WILL…Are you wearing a blue dress. Monica wants it back. Where do you get “this always seems to happen” .Have you seen two or is it three Horry games. i love san antonio but that was definately a cheap shot. he leaned in wit his shoulder on a blind pick when west was in the air. and horry has a history. he helped us out in game 5 against the suns.i hate the ‘dirty’ tag that surrounds san antonio basketball but when you see incidents like this,it feels well earned.and ginobili is a flopper. and bruce bowen does cheap shots all the time.tony parker is the clean player that everyone loves.

It’s not a cheap shot. The Hornets beat the sh*t out of TP in Game 5 and nobody said word one about it being cheap. Horry barely made contact and he’s basketball’s satan incarnate. In my opinion, it wasn’t even really much of a foul..

Uh…really? I don’t see a regular foul let alone a “cheap shot”. Is Horry supposed to avoid setting back picks because West has back problems? This is the finest nit-picking I have ever seen but it’s not too surprising - it’s the damn Spurs, they must be cheap shot artists.
If it was LeBron setting that pick, NBA.com would show 25 some camera angles and the caption would read: LeBron - built like a wall.

Brandon Hoffman says:
From NBA.com: Illegal Screens/Picks
A screen or pick is when an offensive player gets to a legal position on the court in the path of a defender for the purpose of slowing down the defender or making him change directions. An illegal screen/pick is when the offensive player does not get into a legal position. When picking a stationary opponent from the backside, you must give that player a step. When picking a stationary player from the front or side, a player can go right next to him as long as he does not make illegal contact. If the opponent is moving, you must get to your position and give him an opportunity to stop and/or change direction. The speed of the player will determine the distance. You cannot just jump in front of a moving opponent at the last second.

That was about as cheap as I’ve ever seen.

RV says:
Tealish, it was pretty much an offensive foul, like i said earlier, had the pick happened further out where it wasn’t so crowded it would have been more obvious to the refs, its possible they didn’t even call it this time because the game was out of reach. Why was it an offensive foul? Because Horry leaned into him, he wasn’t stationary.

JoeGym says:
I like CP but he pushes off & throws more elbows than Macho Man. He’s consistently elbowed & pushed off TP. He drove into Udoka I think w/his knee up a la Karl Malone. But he’s the babyfaced media favorite so they wont call it on him, especially if its just a Frenchy he’s elbowing.

Rob says:
It was a dirty play. Watch it on YouTube when they slow it down, West jumps backwards and Horry quite clearly crosses his arms and cheapshots West in the back. And as you watch it why was Horry setting this back screen? Was Manu passing to him, if so why make a ‘back screen’ at the same time as the pass? CHEAPSHOT HORRY.

May.17 at 1:53 pm

tealish says:
RV: I didn’t see him lean (only watched it once on 1 camera angle - where’s NBA.com to show us 10?). But if he did, it’s an offensive foul and nothing more. There’s nothing cheap about it. Some people are saying it’s a blatant cheap shot because it wasn’t a legit pick seeing as how he was so ‘away from the play’. But standing your ground to draw offensive/defensive fouls - pushes or contract stemming from a player out of control - are part of the game.

If he really wanted to set a “pick”, he wouldve done it on the man guarding the ball not a defender playing help defense?

Hursty says:
If you think that every pick set off ball OR on ball is legal you’ve got your head up your a$$. Anderson Varejao does it all the time. sticks his knee out on back picks for Gibson or sexyback. When he jumps for an on ball screen for Bron or whoever, hes not stationary when Bron starts to move…. Amare sticks his knee out to catch players going over. Shaq hips people when he rolls. Scola humps people with his chest, rolling into them.

May.18 at 6:05 am

Hursty says:
Horry and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich both noted that Horry’s foul on West was no harder a hit than Hornets center Tyson Chandler’s backside pick on Spurs guard Tony Parker earlier in the series. In both cases, the hits likely would have been legal had Horry or Chandler stood still or fell back and absorbing the contact. Instead, they each leaned forward to ensure the opposing player took the brunt of the collision. Parker also went down hard, but was not injured on the play. “Very silly,'’ Popovich said of the scrutiny given to Horry’s foul on West. “It’s nothing. Just like the back pick that Chandler put on Parker. … It was just a basketball play. I just think it’s typical of where we live. This is our country. We’re sensationalistic, we look for things, we have to have stories.'’

Garrett says:
It only becomes a cheap shot when you look at the history of the player involved. Like, if Bruce Bowen did the same thing, people would be screaming cheap shot. Had Tim Duncan done this, nobody would say anything because he doesn’t have the history. Like previous posters have said, the worst part is that the crowd chants his name afterwards. That’s cold.

1hush D says:
It almost looked like a called play but Horry doesn’t need to be told how to cheap shot a guy, he wrote the book. Pslight nailed it…a pick on West was not needed or even desirable… plus the pass was coming cross court but cheap shot Bob was not even looking to be in the play, he had a mission: Lay a shoulder into David West’s back. I hope West is healthy and can come out and punish the San Antonio Sours and Cheap shot Bob.

Oh and they should apply football (soccer rules) to flops - if its legit you draw the charge, if you flop you get a T and at the second T you’re out …. seems fair enough when its sooooo bullsnit and springboarded

bball_fan says:
Not a ‘Cheap Shot’ at all, just an ordinary foul bc the screen was illegal as Horry wasn’t still. Unfortunately, West was injured and the contact re-agravated it.
