The Post Up: Playoffs Edition
Break out the brooms for Denver?
You’ve got me for another night while Lang holds it down in ATL with the messed up shot clocks and the crazy Hawks. He’ll be posting game notes, while I’ve got this spot for you all to get your discussion on.
After a late lunch with some of my family I came home to settle in for the day/night. I am the laziest person alive during these playoff weekends and it is the most amazing thing in the world until I actually stop and think about how inactive I am over these 48 hours. Doesn’t get any better.
First game of the day was Toronto and Orlando and when I tuned in, Toronto was up and looking good. I definitely jumped the gun when I emailed a friend who was covering the game in Toronto to say something along the lines of, “Yeah Raps, lets go!”. Before I knew it, we were in the final minutes of the fourth and the Raps blew it. Again.
Jameer did his best “Kobe” impersonation in the fourth, dropping in 12 points for the quarter, including 10 straight as the Magic pulled away late.
Now we head to Orlando where the Raps will either “win or go home”. Fun. Looks like I won’t be heading to see any second round action in Toronto this year. Chris Bosh put up big numbers, finishing with 39 points and 15 rebounds but he also got the big fat “L” to go with it.
Lakers and Denver was actually dare I say, boring? Another 20+ point win for LA (of course, for a fan like myself, this was a fantastic kind of boring, but I can see why other basketball fans found it boring). I thought to myself early on that the Nuggets looked like they were playing without believing. After the game, Melo pretty much said the same thing, that they had all quit in the third quarter. Iverson was not happy either, and the Nuggets are rapidly imploding before our very eyes.
Cub will have game notes coming up soon.
To be brief, AI and Melo combined to shoot 10-38 from the floor. The Lakers had five players in double-figures and two others with nine points as Kobe led a balanced scoring attack on the Nuggets.
Also, before the game Melo said he did not want to hear “MVP” chants for Kobe in Denver. Guess what? They rang out loud and clear (Unlike that nasty “no means no” chant that didn’t really catch on).
While I don’t believe in the Nuggets, the worst part is, I don’t think any of the Nuggets have believed since game one.
I can’t wait to read about the shot clock issue that went down in Atlanta. What is up with the clocks and scorekeepers in Atlanta? The players were cracking me up as they waited for things to start up again.
Doc is cringing. I am laughing out loud. KG is going to murder someone and Rondo looks stressed. Are we really going to have a guy counting down the shot clock?
I’m just going to say that I really hope Al wins ROY, Rondo is fantastic and Josh Smith is one of the greatest guys to watch.
Yes, again, Josh is something else. Imagine being able to jump out of the gym and fly like that. If only. Kiss the damn sky, Josh Smith, you are insane and I love it.
Al decided to get a little crazy on PP at the end of the game and now I’m worried about game four. Love the passion, my ROY, not sure if I will like the consequences. Still, how much fun was tonight for those Hawks? Great stuff to watch, that’s for sure.
Okay, Lang has those notes for you right here. Enjoy. Congrats, Hawks fans. You got to watch quite the show tonight.
Final game of the night is Houston and Utah. It’s an eight point game with Utah on top right now at the start of the third and I’m going to leave this one for Russ to recap for you. I’m hoping Houston can grab another win here, because then we’d have something interesting.
Before we go, a few links:
Here are two crazy MJ video’s that I saw recently and sent to Russ immediately since he is the MJ expert around here. I’ve never, ever seen him shatter the backboard before and seeing a skinny Michael is always fun.
Here’s a clip of the Nuggets mascot trying to show up the Lakers and how the Lakers respond. Don’t miss Charles at the end of the clip!
And finally, a picture that always makes me smile. Before I go, I just want to say that I don’t want a Spurs sweep, I wish the Suns would find a way to get at least one win.
One more thing…. Landry without that front tooth is FANTASTIC. Thanks, RV!

Hi insomniacs. ATL must be the most corrupt arena to play in. That’s the worst officiating I’ve ever seen in a game where I wasn’t rooting for one team or another. Plus, nobody brings backup shot clocks to a nationally televise game? This never happened before? With the scoreboard problems, and this, shouldn’t the league look into the competency of the arena staff?

“Summer of 1986, Stefanel Trieste vs Juve Caserta, Nike exhibition game with Michael Jordan.” Apparently. I’d never heard of this before, and I’m pretty obsessive.

Russ Bengtson says:
Also, I feel like the Nuggets might look a lot different next year. They have too many guys making too much money to flame out in the first round again. Either Kenyon or Nene (or both) has to go, and it wouldn’t shock me if either AI or Melo got dealt as well. They’re kind of like the Knicks in the sense that they have too many guys who expect to be stars, and no discernible identity. Marcus Camby should be catching lobs like Tyson Chandler, and I’m not sure if he even scored tonight. They did well with guys going off backdoor cuts, but too often they revert back to AI or Melo trying to go one-on-one. Obviously a lot of this falls at the feet of the coaching staff, who also have a lot of work to do.
Apr.27 at 5:03 am
Hursty says:
camby had no points and is 30+ russ, Chandler is like, 25, 26?
Apr.27 at 5:19 am
Russ Bengtson says:
Oh, I’m not saying he’d be able to do the same things Chandler does on a regular basis, but you’d think he’d at least get a couple of lobs a game. Hell, it’s the least they can do for him given that often he’s their only line of defense. What was that old Shaq line about keeping the dog fed?

Hursty says:
something about Kobe and shakin’ trees….

Hursty says:
the way the Nuggets DONT use their front line is amazing and fu(ked up in the same way, the ENTIRE frontline would average a combined 10 points in a perfect melo, AI, JR, Kleiza world, Anthony Carter is the only one who can see the sense of retreat dribbles and re-setting their ‘offense’ of Iso city for AI and Melo.

Jason says:
Yeah, Denver is done. Iverson needs to not give them a choice on wether he stays or not, he should opt out and leave before they try to ruin the rest of his career. And the Nuggets organization should be embarrased for trading for a player of Iversons caliber if they weren’t ready to win now. Also, its not a surprise that the Nuggets crowd was chanting “MVP” for Kobe by the end of the game considering that half of Denvers crowd are Lakers fans. How pathetic. Could you imagine when Iverson was playing in Philly and the Philly crowd chanting MVP for Kobe? Yeah right. Even if the Sixers were losing, that Philly crowd is too live for that. Also, i’ve said it befor and i’ll say it again, Carmelo is a fraud. Even when Iverson has a bad game (like he did lastnight) I never question his effort…I have been questioning Melo’s efforts all season long. People can say what they want about Iversons teams in Philly, but at least his teams never gave up. Even if they were losing or where facing a supirior opponent..they never gave up, because they were molded in Iversons image. That Nuggets team is half molded in Iversons image and half molded in Carmelos. Half that team plays hard everynight and half of them don’t. And the Coaching at times is atrocious, which doesn’t help any. My god, I have never seen so much talent wasted.
Apr.27 at 6:06 am
Jason says:
I was thinking the same thing ‘Hursty’ about Denvers offense. It was too relient on Melo and AI from day one. Its a shame that Kobe and Gasol don’t even have to have big offensive games and the Lakers still blow out Denver. Denver has entirely too many offensive weapons to just be relying on two of them, no matter how great of scorers they are. That team would be so much more dangerous and effective if they would just be patient and rotate the ball to find the easiest shot possible. No not this team…they make things so difficult for themselves. Also, Camby is probably the softest offensive center in the league..thats probably why they don’t use him as much. Kenyons shot selection has the tendency to be atrocious as well though. LMAO!
Apr.27 at 6:20 am
Tariq says:
The Post Up: Playoff Edition is even better than the regular season version. Also, I agree with Russ about the need for change in Denver. I don’t think AI and Melo can co-exist. Plus, the fact that Melo was once seen as a peer of Bron’s is becoming more and more hard to believe. Trade one of them and get a low-post scorer.
Apr.27 at 6:22 am
Hursty says:
nice putback off Kobes block by martin. thats about it. its not like Denver deteriorates into a tmac hold, run around and shoot offence (to be brutal), they START like that. Karl has sh!t all influence and the managment needs to fire his @ss for a strict coach, if that doesnt work, theyll find out after the 2nd or 3rd coach its the players not the staff that dont give a fu(k and are out to get theirs.
Apr.27 at 6:23 am
Hursty says:
melo will never be ‘the guy’, but ive said this before on other playoff links. blah blah blah
Apr.27 at 7:15 am
Jason says:
I wanted to see AI and Melo under a new Coach before they break them up, but the sad part is that I read on ESPN’s website that they said Coach Karls job is secure. After all this nonsense? I understand that team had 50 wins this season and all..but if they let Coach Karl come back after watching that teams style of play and his coaching style obviously not working, then that goes to show that organization is not serious about winning in the playoffs. Coach Karl either needs to stop being stubbern and change that teams identity and get up in some of his players faces when need be, or he needs to go. I say Coach can go first and if the players are still not responding then they can go to as well. But that team needs some type of structure…because they look like the Harlum Globetrotters out there..just a free for all, and to think people actually wanted Ron Artest there as well as if that team doesn’t have enough to deal with. SMH

B. Long says:
AI needs to stop worrying about what people in urban society think and tell Melo to man the fu(k up. That would be “Keeping it Real.” From what I’ve seen Melo is more worried about making the All-Star team than he is about winning a playoff game. For everything AI has done for this league and been through in his career you would think that he wouldn’t watch such a talented teammate waste his potential. Watching Melo sleep walk his way through this series kinda depressing and I’m a Lakers Fan.

B. Long says:
Rocky the Nuggets Mascot should wear a Kobe jersey to the next game so he’ll have something to cheer for. All the fans that are in the stands in the fourth will be chanting MVP for him anyways. And Melo needs to be banned from SLAM’s cover and get his Jordan shoe deal taken back until he wins a playoff game. They need to remake that New Jordan commerical where he says that maybe he made it look to easy and replace the 17 yr. old kids with Melo. “Or maybe your just making excuses.”
Apr.27 at 9:09 am
DP says:
Agree with B.long, Melo is starting to bore me with his antics. He used to be in the class with LeBron and Wade. Now both of those cats are light years beyond Bron. Melo is just a guy that can score. He is a little better than Linas Kleza. and that is an understatement.
Apr.27 at 9:10 am
DP says:
Al Horford is more athletic version of a Tim Duncan. Kid will be an all-star no doubt. Mike bibby! Finally you got some swagger back!
Apr.27 at 9:14 am
DP says:
Trade melo for Chris Bosh. gutta.
Apr.27 at 9:17 am
B. Long says:
Denver should trade Melo and Keliza to Dallas for Josh Howard and Brandon Bass. JHo is obviously trying to find a way out of Big D and Melo wouldn’t have to be the man there. Plus the Nuggets would get two players that have played defense in there life.
Apr.27 at 9:21 am
Jason says:
B. Long, half the people in Denver lived in Cali before moving there…which would explain the Laker fans in the crowd with the chants. Denvers crowd is not that great anyway..I wonder if Iverson misses playing for those crowds in Philly, when he went back you can tell they missed him, and he missed playing for them. Philly has one of the best crowds to play b-ball for. Golden State too. You sure as hell wouldn’t be hearing no MVP chants for Kobe (no matter how well Kobe is playing this year), their crowds don’t play that sh*t.
Apr.27 at 9:22 am
DP says:
I just don’t like cats that can JUST score. They are meant to come off the bench…..Barbosa, Keliza, Ginobili(he can start though), Sasha,Bobby Jackson, Boobie Gibson, Gilbert, and Carmelo should be added. They are great players, they just need to be used as spark plugs.
Apr.27 at 9:22 am
Russ Bengtson says:
If the Knicks don’t hire Mark Jackson, the Nuggets should bring him in specifically to yell “YOU’RE BETTER THAN THAT!” at Melo 25 times a day.
Apr.27 at 9:23 am
DP says:
Iggy must ball out of control tonight if Philly wants to win. Detroit is pissed off and I don’t think anyone wants that. Especially a pissed off Sheed.
Apr.27 at 9:25 am
Russ Bengtson says:
And that’s because I think Melo IS better than that. He just needs some direction. And maybe a smack upside the head from someone who’s been there before. Time for MJ to make a phone call. Or a house call. In fact, Melo needs to go to the Bobcats so MJ can be in his ear 24/7.
Apr.27 at 9:26 am
DP says:
Larry Brown??????????????????????
Apr.27 at 9:26 am
Jason says:
Denver should keep Melo and let AI walk, because Denver is the only place that will put up with the half effort that Melo gives on any given night. He couldn’t play in a city like New York or Philly…the fans and press would eat him alive.
Apr.27 at 9:27 am
B. Long says:
Russ, Charles Oakley could be his Motivational Asst. and hand out bitch slaps at need. Damn, his hand would be hella sore.
Apr.27 at 9:27 am
Russ Bengtson says:
Not sure if Melo’s interested in getting THAT much direction.
Apr.27 at 9:27 am
Jason says:
I’m surprised AI hasn’t smacked Melo in the head yet.
Apr.27 at 9:28 am
DP says:
nice point Russ, he has tons of talent, he just doesn’t put forth a 100 percent effort on both ends of the floor. I hope he is not the new T-mac. first round swimmers.
Apr.27 at 9:30 am
Russ Bengtson says:
(I meant Larry Brown, but that applies to Oak, too.) And I assume if it was either/or between AI and Melo, the Nuggets would have to pick Melo just because he’s so much younger. Although I think AI’s the better player right now. And the more dedicated one, as hard to believe as that may be.
Apr.27 at 9:33 am
Russ Bengtson says:
Melo needs to be on a team with a driven superstar who practices as hard as he plays and goes all out on both ends of the floor. Like a Duncan or a KG. It’s crazy, but it probably would have been better for his career had he been drafted by Detroit instead of Denver.
Apr.27 at 9:37 am
B. Long says:
Russ,Would have been better for Detroit too.
Apr.27 at 9:40 am
Jason says:
Its a shame that it should have to take another player to drive another player to want to play hard. But seriously Russ, if a player like AI, a player thats known for his heart can’t inspire Melo to play hard then how could anyone else? Even if Iverson doesn’t play defense all that well. LOL! Melo could still play off of how hard Iverson plays. I have watched the Nuggets all season and I haven’t seen Melo take one charge. Not one. See thats why i’m losing hope in Carmelo, because no one had to force Kobe, Lebron, AI, Timmy or K.G to want to be great…they wanted it for themselves and went out and got it. And to me that attitude is whats going to seperate Melo from being an All-Star vs being one of the best to ever play the game.
Apr.27 at 9:40 am
B. Long says:
MELO last night after the game: “We sucked, we all quit. I’m not saying that I quit but as a team we all quit tonight and I’m a part of the team so I’m included in that too.”….wtf?
Apr.27 at 9:42 am
Russ Bengtson says:
I wonder what would have happened? Would they have played him at the four alongside Big Ben and Tayshaun and never traded for Sheed? Or would they have traded Tayshaun and gotten Sheed anyway? And had they done that, would they have just wound up being the Detroit Nuggets? Defense would have suffered, that’s for sure. Maybe if they do that, they don’t beat the Lakers and the Shaq/Kobe split is postponed.
Apr.27 at 9:46 am
Russ Bengtson says:
Jason: The problem with AI doesn’t have anything to do with the games. By all accounts he’s indifferent about practice and isn’t much for the weight room (or early nights). Which is fine for him—it works. He’s a once in a multiple-lifetimes player. I love AI. But he’s not someone you want a young player emulating. What he does works for him, but it probably wouldn’t work for 95 percent of the League. Melo appears to be in that 95 percent. And no, he doesn’t seem to be as driven as Duncan or KG or Kobe, or even Amare or Dwight.
Apr.27 at 9:47 am
DP says:
If if’s were true…………damn basketball would be on point for real right now. But I’m glad Shaq did get traded. Kobe needed to find himself.
Apr.27 at 9:49 am
Jason says:
But George Karl says AI actually practices in Denver. LOL! But I get what you are saying.
Apr.27 at 9:51 am
Russ Bengtson says:
They would have split up eventually–maybe even that off-season. The loss in the Finals just made it, well, final. But they might have gone out on top, at least. And maybe it all wouldn’t have been so acrimonious. (And if the Mailman and GP got rings with the Lakers, would GP have gone on to sign with the Heat? It opens up a whole alternate NBA universe where maybe Dirk Nowitzki has a ring and Dwyane Wade doesn’t.)

Apr.27 at 10:27 am
Jason says:
The Sixers should have traded Iverson to the T-Wolves to play with K.G (then K.G wouldn’t have gotten traded). Iverson should be playing next to veteren Superstars, like how they are right now in Boston (K.G, Paul P and Ray Allen)..Stars that know what its like to go years of carring a team on your back and most of the time getting nowhere. Carmelo seems more worried about trying to get into All-Star games right now more then winning playoff series…maybe if Iverson opts out and leaves and Carmelo goes a few more years of getting knocked out the first round (if even making the playoffs at all), maybe he’ll understand then how important winning is to some of these players.

Denver is definitely “blowing up” something in the offseason. It kinda sucks that Nene, after working his way back from his cancer scare, would be the guy that gets shipped out, but it appears that is exactly what happens. From the look on Iverson’s face during game 3, he doesn’t seem long for Denver. I definitely think he opts out at the end of the season, no question. I would say that Karl gets the boot, but from what I understand, he is tight with the owner.

I don’t think so Bubba, to me Melo needs to stay right there in Denver. And Iverson should find a team with vets or at least players that are ready to win and don’t just sit around talking about it, they actually go out and do it. A player like Iverson should be playing b-ball back in a larger market anyway where he belongs. Leave the small town stuff to Melo.

I desperately want Iverson to win a ring. If he goes to a contender next season, I’m ON that bandwagon. How could this scenario conceivably happen? A multi-player trade to the Suns? A Dallas swap? What?

Jason says:
Tariq: If the Suns and Denver get swept in the playoffs and Dallas doesn’t get out the 1st and 2nd rounds…that three way deal could be a possibility. I don’t know with who, but I remember during the Iverson trade from the Sixers, Mark Cuban saying that he has always been a big fan of Iverson and was trying to figure out how he could bring him to Dallas (to play with Dirk ofcourse), but they couldn’t figure out the money issue and he said he knew that the Sixers wouldn’t buy Iverson out (because they weren’t going to give him up without getting something in return) so he could bring him to Dallas. We all know the only thing Dirk is missing on that team is a heart! LOL!!

The day Iverson comes off of anyones bench will be the day hell freezes over.

H to the izzo says:
What legitimate championship contender can afford AI?A legitimate contender definately does NOT need Ivy to take as many shots as he does or to have as much possesion of the ball as he currently does.BTW AI to the Celts would be unbelievable.
Apr.27 at 11:36 am
Jason says:
Hey what about Iverson to Orlando to team up with Dwight Howard (AI has never played with a dominate big man), Lewis and Turk?
Apr.27 at 11:36 am
DP says:
alright izzo, you want to go at it bro?
Apr.27 at 11:39 am
Jason says:
The celts were also a team that wanted Iverson during the trade from the Sixers. They were actually one of the top teams on the list. But the Sixers were not about to trade Iverson to a team in the East..let alone a team in the same division. I would jump right on the Celtic Pride bandwagon if AI went to the celts.
Apr.27 at 11:41 am
Jason says:
Izzo…you don’t think Iverson would opt out his contract and sign an affordible one with a contender? I think with the right Coach, Iverson would be fine on the shotgun shooting of the ball. He has actually averaged less shots per game (beleive it or not) and his percentage is up in Denver.
Apr.27 at 11:42 am
Bubba Chuck says:
Hey what if iverson got traded 2 tha Denver Nuggets 4 Andre Miller, Joe Smith & 2 draft picks?
Apr.27 at 11:44 am

Andre Miller is playin like he needs a new contract…Philly needs to give him one. depending on how he plays today of course.

Iverson and Iggy pt.2 would be tight if they could get a consistent post player. Iggy is much better since Iverson left the house. One thing is that he just doesn’t dunk anymore. SLAM is pretty good at picking the rookie diary peeps. except for Joakim Noah, Kyle Lowry,. Next year if you guys don’t give it to Mayo, Beasley, Rose, or Love, I will stop my subscription. But didn’t Dre say something earlier this year like, “This is not my favorite place to play.” I hope he sticks in Philly for Iggy’sake. And if Philly beats Detroit Im buying a Reggie Evans jersey.

TADOne says:
Iverson should opt out and join Paul in New Orleans. Other than the fact that tiny backcourt would get killed on the defensive end, that team would be quite sic.

DP says:
he had SOME good moments. that’s bout it. Jarvaris C. is going to be a beast though. That is who Lowry should be worried about for his starting spot. and some kid named conley jr. too.

Jason says:
I wish things didn’t end so rocky between Iverson and the 76er organization…it would be nice if he could just opt out and go back and finsh his career as a where he belongs, as a Sixer. Philly finally has a real PG again with Andre Miller (sort of like how Eric Snow was) and the players seem to have matured their game and at least play hard everynight. All they are missing is that legit go to guy…*hint, hint* When Iverson went back to Philly for the first time this season that crowd was ridiculous.

B_Easy24 says:
I was watching game 2 today (didn’t get a chance to see it when it was televised)and I see that as talented as roster that the Nuggets have the the offense is completly incumbent on meloman an AI get to the offensive gears moving. I believe that the Nuggets would have won game, because in the first half of the game the Nuggets were up by like 6, but in the second half that’s when kobe started going nuts they eventually got blown out by twenty points. I think that the only way that AI can win a chip is if scales his game back and incorporate his teammates into the game that’s why the Nuggets organization brough AI so that he can hepl them to win and possiblyinfluence his younger teammates, but the converse seems to be happening where as the whole team wants to be like AI and I look at Melo and as good as he is he seem to be another AI copycat. Hopefully the Denver management can probably pull some strings and get a good draft pick or probably Trade somebody(Not AI & not Melo)for a good power forward and center, because if they expect k-mart to be effective then they’re smooking dope. dude doesn’t even have a faceup jumpshot, he’s ineffective once he gets at least 5 feet away from the basket. If I were the Nuggets coach I would scrap the team with the exception of klenis (is that his name?) and melo and get better coaching talent.
