The Post Up: Nuggets and Hornets Escape with W’s

While the Spurs stop the Warriors in San Antonio

By: Holly MacKenzie

Another night another crazy match up. I was fired up for the Denver/Phoenix rematch all day and it definitely did not disappoint. The energy level was high and it sure felt like playoff basketball. While I loved the list that Russ and Myles came up with yesterday, right now I am thrilled with how this season is playing itself out.

Except for the whole issue of San Antonio defeating Golden State last night. The Spurs are so dangerous. Down by three or four points and the next thing you know, you are looking at the clock and the deficit is 20+. Jax struggled all night, Monta was not Monta and Tony Parker had a field day leading San Anton to the W.

I was happy I caught the end of the Orlando/New Orleans game, too. I fell asleep early last night and slept through most of the evening without wanting or meaning to. I blame it on the cold I’m still fighting. I was thankful I caught most of the fourth quarter between those two teams. While CP3 definitely missed both of those free throws with 6.8 seconds left and his squad up by only one, it made me realize just how good he is when his 12 assists and 4 turnovers seemed really sloppy.

Peja’s three and his free throws saved the game for the Hornets and it was cool to see Byron with Paul after the game. The look of sheer relief on Paul’s face was enough to show anyone watching that the kid does not take losing well. I know that people have raised concern over how well they will do in the playoffs, but I get more and more confident each time I watch them play. They somehow found a way to get this win through their effort and just wanting it more, they gritted their teeth together and made it happen.

It’s crazy to think that I had the Suns to win it all this year, they add Shaquille O’Neal to their roster and now they are barely even on my list of potential teams to come out of the West.

I don’t even know who I think it is going to come down to anymore. Of course I had the Lakers and Pistons, and I will technically stay with that, but really, who knows. Boston looks damn near unstoppable when they are focused and I can’t wait to see the intensity KG gets out of those guys once the postseason hits.

Pau Gasol is expected to suit up for the Lakers as they face Portland tonight. Good news.

When is the last time we’ve seen Shaq so active on the boards? Or just this active, period? He almost ripped Melo’s arm off early in the game as he snatched a rebound away from him.

JR Smith had another nice game with 17 points last night. Just saying.

I flipped the channel for maybe two minutes in the third quarter, come back and I don’t see Raja. I see that both teams are fired up even more than they had been in the first half but I just assume that he has picked up a foul and was sitting. Took me about 15 minutes to realize that he had not just been pulled because of foul trouble, but because he had been handed two technicals and had been ejected from the game. Oops.

Tonight. ESPN. Golden State @ Dallas. Golden State is ½ game out of the playoffs, and Denver is ½ game back of Dallas who is one full game ahead of the Warriors. Did you catch all of that? Don’t miss this game.

Dirk is now listed as day-to-day and there is a possibility that he may play tonight. Another reason to watch, if you needed one.

New Orleans 98 Orlando 97

Something you won’t see often is Chris Paul turning the ball over and being unable to deliver under pressure. Both of these things happened last night, but still the Hornets managed to hold on for the 98-97 victory over the Orlando Magic. With Orlando leading by six after one and by nine at the half, the Hornets needed to come out strong in the third. They did, outscoring the Magic 30-23 in the period, putting together a 12-0 run to cut the deficit in the early minutes of the quarter. The two teams would trade leads, with Orlando going ahead by as many as 11 again, before New Orleans trimmed the lead down to two points going into the fourth trailing, 76-74. In the final quarter things were tight, with neither team leading by more than three points. After shooting only 1-9 in the game, Peja Stojakovic found his stroke late, knocking down a three-pointer with 54 seconds remaining to put the Hornets up one, 96-95. After Maurice Evans missed a jumper, Stojakovic made two free throws with 12 seconds on the clock. A dunk by Hedo Turkoglu brought Orlando within one and Paul was sent to the line with 6.8 seconds remaining where he missed both free throws. Luckily, Orlando could not convert on their final possession and the Hornets escaped. Paul finished with 19 points and 12 assists as Morris Peterson added 19 points as well. David West had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Tyson Chandler added 12 points. Turkoglu had 26 points and 7 assists for Orlando as Rashard Lewis scored 24. Dwight Howard had 17 points and 15 rebounds while Evans and Keith Bogans each added 11. The Magic were out-rebounded 50-31 in the loss, including 21-2 on the offensive glass.

San Antonio 116 Golden State 92

In the race towards the playoffs, the Warriors wanted to go 4-0 on this road trip. After opening their trip with a loss against the Spurs, they will now have to settle for a best-case scenario 3-1 after the Spurs dropped them 116-92. Turning a tied game into a 12-point halftime lead with a 20-8 run in the second quarter, the Spurs pulled away late in the third and they then turned the game into a blowout by the opening minutes of the fourth. While the Warriors got within two points midway through the third, the spurs closed the quarter on an 11-0 run to go into the fourth up 13. The Spurs continued to roll in the fourth, as they outscored Golden State 30-19 and put the game away early on as the Warriors never threatened in the final period. Tony Parker led the Spurs with 26 points and 7 assists. Tim Duncan had 17 points and 12 rebounds, Manu Ginobili scored 16 off of the bench and Michael Finley added 13. Baron Davis scored 19 points for the Warriors, Monta Ellis scored 14 points and CJ Watson added 13. Stephen Jackson struggled in the game, finishing with only 6 points on 2-12 shooting in the loss.

Boston 106 Chicago 92

Another game against a team sitting on the outside of the playoff race equaled another victory for the Boston Celtics. Last night the Celtics faced Chicago and used a strong final quarter to shake the Bulls for good, defeating them 106-92. While Boston’s offense was clicking, they fell victim to turning the ball over as they finished with 20 turnovers in the game, their sloppiness allowed the Bulls to hang around far longer than the Celtics had hoped. To start the fourth quarter, the Bulls trailed only 79-73, and they hung around until the final minutes where Boston dropped in consecutive three-pointers to extend their lead into double-figures and the Bulls could not answer down the stretch. Ray Allen had 22 points and 6 assists for the Celtics, Kevin Garnett scored 20 points and Paul Pierce added 17. James Posey scored 11 points off of the bench. Tyrus Thomas had 24 points to lead the Bulls while Andres Nocioni scored 19 off of the bench and Luol Deng had 10 points.

Sacramento 99 Houston 98

While the Houston Rockets are very much in the Western Conference playoff picture, the Kings are not. Still, they want to improve with each remaining game and with that improvement they are looking for victories and the opportunity to spoil another team’s playoff hopes along the way. Last night, the Kings did just that, hanging on to defeat the Rockets 99-98 on their home floor. In a game that was close the entire way through, neither team led by more than six points. Houston led 29-28 after the first quarter, but Sacramento held the 49-46 lead at the break and were up 77-76, at the start of the fourth. The final quarter was a sloppy one for both teams with Houston missing their first 10 shots of the period. The first field goal of the quarter came midway through, with Rafer Alston knocking down a three-pointer for Houston. The Kings were scoring at the line, but had their own struggles from the floor, scoring their first field goal with 4:35 on the clock. After the teams traded leads in the final minutes, Kevin Martin knocked down two free throws to put Sacramento up by one and after Ron Artest turned the ball over the Rockets went to McGrady for the potential game-winner, but his jumper came up short and the Kings survived. Artest led the Kings with 30 points in the contest while Martin finished with 27. Mikki Moore scored 11 points and Brad Miller added 10. McGrady led the Rockets with 32 points, Luis Scola scored 20 points to go with 8 rebounds, Alston finished with 16 points and 8 assists and Shane Battier had 9 points and 9 rebounds in the loss. The Kings won despite being out-rebounded 49-28 in the contest.

Denver 126 Phoenix 120

Only one night after Phoenix’s big 22-point comeback against the Nuggets the two teams faced off again, this time in Denver and this time with the Nuggets ½ game out of the eighth spot in the West. This time, the Nuggets were not about to go down and while they allowed the Suns to take over the lead for the first time in the contest in the final minutes, they did not cower and refused to give up the game. Forcing the Suns to foul them in the final minute, the Nuggets were solid from the line as they won the game on free throws after a huge jumper from Marcus Camby gave them a two point lead with 37 seconds remaining. After the Nuggets led throughout the game and went up by as many as 14 points, they watched as Phoenix came roaring at them to start the fourth, exactly as they had done Monday night. With Nash heating up the Suns took their first lead of the game on free throws from Nash with 3:11 remaining in the game. The teams would trade the lead the rest of the way through with Nash and Leandro Barbosa each missing three-pointers that would have put the Suns on top and after each miss it was Carmelo Anthony who came down with the rebound and went to the foul line, calmly sinking free throws. While Shaquille O’Neal missed on his free throws late, Kenyon Martin did not, sealing the game on his two free throws. The Nuggets were the aggressors early and continued it the rest of the way through, attempting 47 free throws to the Suns 26 attempts. Raja Bell was ejected in the third after drawing two quick technicals. The Nuggets were led by Allen Iverson’s 31 points while Anthony finished with 25 points and 8 rebounds. JR Smith had 17 points off of the bench, Kenyon Martin scored 18 points and Anthony Carter added 8 points, 10 assists and 6 steals. Barbosa scored 27 points for the Suns, starting in place of the injured Grant Hill. Stoudemire finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds, Nash had 17 points and 18 assists and O’Neal added 14 points and 13 rebounds.

The Rest…

Philadelphia took down New Jersey 108-99 last night. With each loss, the Nets fall further out of the playoff race. After being tied 77 at the break, the Sixers came out strong in the second and outscored the Nets 21-16 in the third and 30-26 in the fourth to take the game. Andre Miller had 24 points and 11 assists for Philly, while Andre Iguodala scored 17 points to go with 10 assists. Willie Green added 16 points and Samuel Dalembert scored 15 while grabbing 13 rebounds. Vince Carter had 29 points for the Nets as Devin Harris scored 22 while Richard Jefferson and Bostjan Nachbar each added 14. While resting Richard Hamilton, Chauncey Billups and Rasheed Wallace, the Pistons defeated the Timberwolves 94-90 in Minnesota last night. With the Wolves hanging around and the Pistons needed someone to step up in the fourth, Rodney Stuckey showed up for Detroit, scoring 12 of his 27 in the final period to lead the to the win. Tayshaun Prince scored 15 points and Walter Herrmann added 11. Al Jefferson scored 26 points to lead Minnesota while Randy Foye scored 18, as Marko Jaric and Corey Brewer each added 10 points.

I might the only one here, but I believe TP is the fourth or fifth PG in the league. And heproved last night he was ahead of baron when it comes to win games that matters. I’d like to see them face to face in the playoffs though.

great win for Denver…..I sure hope to see Gasol back in action tonight

the Celtics do look scary this year….but you know what they say about betting on ‘a sure thing’

WhaHuh says:
the Hornets should not have won, after Paul missed the free throw Magic could have gone to ANYONE for the last play. I was hoping for another inbound dunk from Howard, but either Lewis or Turkoglu should have taken it.

i will not be here today to hear all the conversations. Have a Happy Birthday everyone.

The Warriors better hope they don’t draw the Spurs in the first round.

WhaHuh says:
Al Jefferson is wasting energy at minnesota, the pistons had a 2nd team playing and they still lost

Apr.2 at 9:43 am

Russ Bengtson says:
The Pistons B team is pretty damn good. I’m sure TADOne will support that.

Apr.2 at 9:48 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
Quiet around here this morning. Did most of you catch Denver and Phoenix?

Apr.2 at 10:12 am

TADOne says:
Morning all. Thanks Russ, I do support that, although I missed the game. The future looks bright with Stuckey.

Apr.2 at 10:20 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
Tad, both of your rook’s are solid. Stuck is my favorite though.

Apr.2 at 10:37 am

TADOne says:
Mine too Holly. Arron Afflalo will definitely have a nice career though. His defensive intensity and his “gym rat” personality will serve him well. But Stuckey certainly has the much brighter future.

Apr.2 at 10:38 am

Allenp says:
Joe Dumars is underrated. Sure, his decision to pass on Melo and to let Okur walk were flubs, but that dude has done a great job assembling talent with late draft picks. He and Isiah are pretty good drafters.

Apr.2 at 10:44 am

TADOne says:
Allen: There is no arguing the Darko fiasco, but Okur got $50 mil from Utah, so that was not a mistake letting him go. There was no way Detroit was going to match that.

Apr.2 at 10:46 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Joe Dumars and Isiah Thomas should never EVER be mentioned in the same sentence unless we’re talking Bad Boys.

Apr.2 at 10:51 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
Did anyone watch the games last night? Impressive plays from the Hornets down the stretch. Rebounding, steals, 21-2 on the offensive boards, against a team with Dwight? That is crazy.

Apr.2 at 10:53 am

Russ Bengtson says:
For argument’s sake, lets say Isiah made every pick since he’s been with the Knicks by closing his eyes and pulling the name of an eligible player out of a hat. Would the Knicks have a worse record than they do now? I doubt it. Channing Frye had a pretty good rookie year then fell off. Ditto for Renaldo Balkman (he’s had an awful lot of DNP-CDs this year). Nate Robinson can be a terrific scorer on a terrible team or at best a bench spark for a contender. I won’t even get into the idea of trading two unprotected first rounders for EDDY CURRY. What shrewd judge of talent does that??? Eddy is the centerpiece, I guess–like a stuffed turkey on Thanksgiving.

Apr.2 at 10:55 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Sorry, Holly. The playoffs need the Warriors and the Nuggets. Stern needs to ban the Mavs from the postseason. NO TEAM OWNERS WITH BLOGS WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE PLAYOFFS.

Apr.2 at 10:57 am

TADOne says:
He did draft Tracy while in Toronto.

Apr.2 at 10:58 am

BETCATS says:
i have returned for 1 second to join the discussion. Renaldo needs to come to CHA, we will like him their. These are the knicks that can stay: Jamal Crawlford, David Lee, Jared Jefferies, Nate Robinson,Renaldo Balkman, Zach Randolph, Fred Jones. CUT EVERYONE ELSE

Apr.2 at 10:58 am

TADOne says:
And yes, ban the Mavs. I want to see AI, Baron, Captain Jack, Melo, and Monta all in the playoffs. I’ve seen enough of Dirk in playoff moments.

Apr.2 at 10:59 am

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Dumars is a very good, no doubt - but Isiah Allenp? Stuckey and Scola impresses me. What happened to Luol Deng budding all-star? looking so much forward to Mavs-W’s tonight!

Apr.2 at 11:02 am

FLUD says:
Russ, seeing as you mentioned it. BADBOYS, Joe D = Will Smith, Isiah T = Martin Lawrence….if we’re equating career paths with shy guys, the kinda guys who’ll always be miiiinee, mercy mercy mercy. Mavs out mavs out mavs out mavs out Mavs ou…..

Apr.2 at 11:03 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Jerry Krause wanted to trade Pippen to the Grizzlies in order to take McGrady fourth. Only reason it didn’t happen is Jordan threatened to retire. That’s a stone cold fact. Do you honestly think, had Isiah NOT taken T-Mac, that he would have fallen any farther than that? It was like the Celtics taking Pierce 10th in ‘99–that wasn’t a case of the Celtics being geniuses as much as it was nine other teams being mind-numbingly stupid.

Apr.2 at 11:06 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
Thanks, Russ. I agree with everything that Tad has said this morning, also.

Apr.2 at 11:10 am

TADOne says:
Wow, I didn’t know that. Great history lesson.

Apr.2 at 11:14 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
Russ, that’s crazy. I love your stories, have any more for us this morning?

Apr.2 at 11:14 am

DP says:
SLOW morning. didn’t see this coming with all the good games that came on last night. But anyway tonight it is going down. Mavs vs. Warriors. Who yall got? play wit it.

Co Co says:
“When is the last time we’ve seen Shaq so active on the boards? Or just this active, period? He almost ripped Melo’s arm off early in the game as he snatched a rebound away from him”. I know right. And since when does Shaq grab his head after every foul they call on him or a teammate? Quite disturbing.

Apr.2 at 11:17 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
CoCo, it’s weird, hey? He’s like a whole different PERSON out there.

Apr.2 at 11:17 am

RV says:
Kobe: “i hope they’re just peaking early”…right on

Apr.2 at 11:18 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
DP, I’m going with the Warriors because they need this W. Hoping Jax will have a big bounce back game after the rough showing last night.

Apr.2 at 11:21 am

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
DP - unfortunately I think Mavs will win it. It’ll be close though. Co Co; Shaq is just doing his Duncan impersonation.

Apr.2 at 11:23 am

RV says:
Russ, what do you think about Vernon maxwell? I was reading some articles by Yao’s personal trainer, Anthony Falsone, he mentioned how Maxwell could have been another Jordan had he had his head on straight and that Maxwell was the best athlete he’s ever seen. I was very young during his best years so I don’t remember a lot and I can’t find any highlight clips…

Apr.2 at 11:23 am

DP says:
If Monta is the Monta that is faster than the speed of light I except the Warriors to win too, Holly. Mavs are fighting though without Dirk. I’m impressed with their effort.

Apr.2 at 11:24 am

Co Co says:
I think when Dallas beat the Clippers the other day it quite possibly was their last win of the season. I think they are THAT done!

Apr.2 at 11:25 am

Candice says:
Shaq got Melo two times in that game. They should have let Nene play Shaq more. Melo got Shaq too many times for my taste. Nene was more effective against Shaq than any other Nugget.

Apr.2 at 11:30 am

TADOne says:
God, I hope you are right, Co Co. The Mavs do have a tough upcoming schedule: Warriors tonight, then @Lakers, @Suns, Seattle, Utah, @Portland, @Seattle, New Orleans. I can only see them winning the 2 against Seattle.

Apr.2 at 11:31 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Saying that Vernon Maxwell could have been another Jordan if he had his head on straight is like saying Muggsy Bogues could have been another Magic if he was 6-9. Mad Max was straight-up insane. He was definitely a stellar athlete–he was an All-State high school football player (in Florida, no less). And he scored in bunches at Florida. But my strongest memories of him as a pro were of his three-point shooting (and, of course, his being crazy). I don’t remember much about his athleticism.

Apr.2 at 11:31 am

Eboy says:
RV, the Maxwell/Jordan comparison would be equal to a Ricky Davis/Kobe Bryant comparison in the modern game. In other words, not quite.

Apr.2 at 11:32 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
Candice, any word on Melo’s shoulder? Just sore? He looked like he was in a lot of pain, he was getting beat up pretty bad the whole night.

Apr.2 at 11:32 am

Eboy says:
Co-sign Russ about Mad Max’s three point shooting in the lig. He fit in well with the Rockets teams though.

Apr.2 at 11:35 am

Co Co says:
Hi Russ. I checked Denver’s website earlier in hopes of reading about Melo’s shoulder, but they’ve not updated it yet. They’re still lamenting the Monday loss.

Apr.2 at 11:36 am

RV says:
I think he was refering to MJ’s athleticism mostly, he said Maxwell had the best combination of strength, speed, agility, etc. But i definitely remember the crazy part, like him taking his alleged son out for the day, but only to go get him a DNA test, then paying him off to not tell his mom, who he’d locked up in a closet some time before.

Apr.2 at 11:38 am

Drew says:
I was at the Nuggets/Suns game last night. It was intense, even though Rocky was clearly under the weather. The Nugs held their ground when they could have folded like the night before. KMart had his thug on. Nene can be a force. He was the only one who Shaq can’t push around. JR is playing inspired ball. He can really add a spark. That being said: The refs were awful, for both teams, but probably worse for the Suns. The Suns are scary when they are hitting their 3s. After Monday night, I was shocked that they missed two at the end of the game.

Apr.2 at 11:38 am

TADOne says:
There are plenty of stellar athletes, past and present, that have played in the league.

Apr.2 at 11:41 am

DP says:
I need to look up this maxwell kid……………….

Apr.2 at 11:44 am

f*cking joke you f*ckers. lol. sorry TAD I’m like 16 but I look 25. play wit it.

Apr.2 at 11:51 am

People's Princess says:
Mad Max n MJ??? Thats crazy talk.Even athleticism wise,MJ was jumping over fools and coming up with monster blocks when he was 35.That must be the longest sustained display of topnotch athleticism in bball history. The only person who even comes close to that would be AI,IMO..

Apr.2 at 11:53 am

Well DP, you’ll be wishing when you are 25 that you don’t look 36, trust me.

Apr.2 at 12:00 pm

Candice says:
Holly, Melo shoulder has been bothering most of the season. Anthomy Carter was on NBATV post game and they asked him about Melo shoulder and he said that Melo said he was okay. Melo just said that Shaq almost riped his arm off. I just think he was sore from getting hit from Shaq twice. Nene need’s to play more. No way Najera should be on Shaq or Amare. Also Camby just looks tired.

Apr.2 at 12:01 pm

RV says:
Kobe has been sustaining his for a long time also, not as old, but very long time, and i can see him doing it for more years to come. I’m still convinced Tmac’s trainer is hurting him more than helping, Kobe and KG have played just as long, aren’t as fragile or broken like him though. Falsone would have turned tmac into kobe..

Apr.2 at 12:02 pm

illydiva says:
Maybe no one cares but me, but my Sixers played a hell of a game last night. 3 players with double doubles? Don’t see that often. Dalembert had a monster game whether it shows in the box or not. Oh, and I remember Mad Max. He played for the Sixer for 5 minutes at the end of his career. He was not much more than a 3pt shooter by then, but I remember his being crazy. Always loved that about him. He was no MJ though. Not even close.

Apr.2 at 12:05 pm

DP says:
I see Iggy n company making some noise in the playoffs this year. anyone disagree?

Apr.2 at 12:08 pm

TADOne says:
I think Philly can make some noise too, unless they play Detroit.

Apr.2 at 12:09 pm

Eboy says:
Or Boston.

Apr.2 at 12:12 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
Illydiva, I love when Iggy get’s the passing game going. With he and Miller playing like that and the other guys hitting their shots they are fun to watch

Apr.2 at 12:16 pm

DP says:
I am really waiting to see what kind of leader Iggy will be come playoff time. Everybody in Philly is probably waiting for that as well. Anybody got ATL suprising BOS in the east? I know for damn sure I don’t.

Apr.2 at 12:17 pm

TADOne says:
Philly won’t play Boston. They won’t finish lower than the 7th seed, but could end up as high as #5. In the 6th spot, they would face Orlando, and in the 5th spot the Cavs. I think they definitely could give those two teams a scare.

Apr.2 at 12:19 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
Tad, who’s up next for the Pistons?

Apr.2 at 12:20 pm

TADOne says:
The only way Atlanta surprises Boston is if Joe Johnson averages 40+ for the series and Horford averages 20/10 and 3 blocks, and that still may not be enough.

Apr.2 at 12:22 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
And if Dominique Wilkins comes back and is magically 26 years old again.

Apr.2 at 12:23 pm

DP says:
oh okay. ATL?

Apr.2 at 12:23 pm

TADOne says:
Does it really matter Holly? Ha ha. Let’s see: NJ Friday, then @Miami, Knicks, @Philly, Wiz, Raps, Minny, @ Cavs to finish the season. Looks like we may rest our starters for the next 3.

Apr.2 at 12:27 pm

DP says:
That series will go seven games-ATL vs. BOS. I guarantee this.

Apr.2 at 12:29 pm

DP says:
Lakers, please play defense. You guys are starting to upset me.

Apr.2 at 12:30 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
that’s why I was asking, Tad! I want to check out Stuck and Afflalo :)

Apr.2 at 12:38 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Vernon was athlethíc, not compared to Mike off course, but definetly above average. I have a old Rockets-Spurs game stashed somewhere where he dunks all over some Spurs PF’- maybe Antoine Carr, don’t really remember who - Mad Max was only 6′3 so it was kinda nice. Loved his game; timely three-pointshooting, fearless attitude, weird facial expressions and the occasional punch thrown. Remember he was Artest before Ron when it came to crowd-handling.

Candice: George Karl was on the radio this morning, and he talked about how he has been easing Nene back into more minutes. The team doesn’t play until Saturday, and he said that they will run Nene hard during the Thursday practice. If he holds up, he will start playing more.
