‘Nique Likes Atlanta’s Chances Against Boston

by Marcel Mutoni

Ladies and germs, the Crazy Train is about to leave the station. All aboard!

Dominique Wilkins, who as a VP in the Hawks organization, I suppose is paid to say these sorts of things, has confidence in his beloved (and woefully mismatched Atlanta Hawks) as they prepare to be swept face the League’s best team in the first round of the Playoffs.

“We played Boston well up to [last Saturday]. It will be a nice matchup for us. We know they’re focused. We know they’re trying to get to the championship.

“It’s a chance for us to do what Golden State did last year to Dallas. Anything can happen in the playoffs.”

Why, ‘Nique, are you planning on suiting up? Because that’d be about the only chance your Hawks have of making this a series.

As amazing as a Hawks upset would be, the fact remains that only twice in the last 15 years has a number one seed been knocked out in the first round. History may repeat itself, but it won’t this year.

James AKA the artist formerly known as Krayzie Bone says:
Thats silly. Atlanta is not a playoff team except by virtue of being where they are (that goes double for my raptors. Philly got hot, so they get a pass for now)

Apr.16 at 12:04 pm

Gerard Himself says:
yeah Nique, go all Wyclef “Anything can happen”. Sure, I might sign a contract next year to be the new coach of the Nets - what what say what say what anything can happen.

ESneed says:
Nique is having flashbacks to his playing days…too many power dunks made his head swell

Best playoff game ever.

Eboy says:
I’d take the 1988 team in a matchup with this Celts team. The current one? Dominique is trippin’.

Apr.16 at 12:22 pm

Solito says:
That’s what they said about Denver, too. Seattle thought they could cruise that best record streight to the throphy. Don’t forget, the slates are wiped clean at the tip of of the first game… (I don’t really see ATL going, either. I m just saying).

Logan Light says:
Joe Johnson is getting slept on!! We don’t know what he’s capable of… frankly, cause he’s never been there, but he’s about to make some noise! With that said… Nique is nuts.

I’ll be surprised if they win one game. I’ll be surprised if they are within 10 points at any time in a game.

Mo Charlo says:
All it would take is three Horford karate chops to get the Hawks to the second round.

Apr.16 at 12:51 pm

Mo Charlo says:
Like Huey says in “The Boondocks,” ‘it’s fun to dream.’

Apr.16 at 12:53 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
27.5 game difference, dude.

Apr.16 at 12:55 pm

d.Y. says:
Exactly. Why is this even being debated? Is there a chance one of these games isn’t a double digit finish? Even a small chance?

Think of how good Atlanta would be if they drafted Paul like they should have.

‘Nique still wants payback for losing to Bird in their epic duel from way back. This time: Zaza vs. Powe. Instant classic.

John E. Sanford says:
The ATL better get the brooms ready.

Apr.16 at 1:15 pm

TADOne says:
The C’s in 5…..5 quarters that is. After the 1st game and the first 12 minutes of the 2nd game, the Hawks are going to raise the white flag.

Apr.16 at 1:19 pm

albie1kenobi says:
TAD, i thought you meant 5 minutes, but okay, 5 quarters work too.
and big ups to Gerard spotting Wyclef’s underrated track. that’s one hilarious song, with all the imagery about being James Bond and sh!t. worth mentioning is that there’s a line in the song: “Will the Knicks win the championship this year”. granted it was written closed to 10 years ago, but man this line is more absurd than ever.

Confidence doesn’t equate to victories. They can have supreme confidence, but they are still going to get beat down.

You guys are gonna make Lang cry. C’mon! What do you expect ‘Nique to say? He’s VP of Basketball Operations for the Hawks & one of their best players ever.

Apr.16 at 3:50 pm

AC says:
Celtics in 4. Atlanta might make a couple of the games tight… but KG’s hungery… Birds are on the menu. Besides… like hursty said… he can’t say they’re gonna lose when the Hawks pay him.

Apr.16 at 4:01 pm

what says:
Haha even as a Hawks fan I gotta say Nique’s on crack.

Apr.16 at 4:17 pm

Gerard Himself says:
Albie: I just thought about that Knicks line, yeah, that IS sad!
What’s even more sad that The Carnivale is Wyclef Jean’s only good solo album. I can still listen to it even after all those years.

Apr.16 at 5:37 pm

The Promise says:
Can they? Yes. Will they? No. Celtics in 5

Apr.16 at 6:18 pm

Tim Duncan says:
I’ma agree with Celts in 5. Garnett will dominate the post. Unless, Horford gives him a chop as earlier stated. LOL

Apr.16 at 9:18 pm

Shooter#9 - Brasil says:
i don’t know… bibby grows a lot in playoff time
hahahahahhaahhahah
c’s in 4, and, like “canadian”, if any game is below 10 in point diff, i’ll be surprised

Apr.16 at 9:32 pm

Ethan says:
Somebody tell Nique that he retired and this is not 1993—and he doesnt play 4 them anymore, plus Big Al,J-Smith & company are good, but they are the 8 in the east. I’ve said enough.
GO LAKERS

Apr.16 at 9:49 pm

Dacre says:
Would love atlanta to win this series… Boston in 5.

Apr.17 at 12:51 am

TC says:
The only way the Hawks can win the series is have Dominique Wilkins suits up for the Celtics and plays 40 minutes a game.

Apr.17 at 2:45 am

B. Long says:
I,m gonna be the only one with the balls to say this but I say the series goes to game 7.

Apr.17 at 4:47 am

hursty says:
nique would break both his legs, arms and would then we would get a repeat of the old nba all star game for retired players with torn ACL’s and dislocations all over the place.

Apr.17 at 5:04 am

LAN says:
wtf hursty?

Apr.17 at 5:05 am

bballer says:
What is crazy about Nique expecting Atlanta to win? I’m sure we tought it was crazy to think that Dallas was going to lose to Golden State last year or Seattle lose to Denver in ‘94 or Miami lose to New York in ‘99 all in the first round. But it happened. It’s called an upset and it can happen when people underestimate a team and call them “crazy” for thinking they have a chance.

Apr.17 at 5:20 am

Jukai says:
Continuing on bballer’s point, Celtics in 4.

Apr.17 at 8:37 am

Mike says:
I want to know what barkley thinks about this.

Apr.17 at 9:23 am

Mark Z says:
A bunch of people have pointed this out, but I’ll say it again. The Mavs/GState series doesn’t apply. Upsets can happen (GState-Cavs), but even Avery admitted he made a mistake last season by pushing the Mavs to win every single game and burning out his team in the process. Doc Rivers did the opposite. He kept his starters fresh by playing them just enough minutes to win. At the same time he developed a solid bench that wasn’t supposed to exist. Nice trick. Whatever I thought about Doc’s coaching in the past, he was up to the challenge this year.

Apr.17 at 10:54 am

ellis says:
good point marcus Z.
will doc get coach o year? i’m hoping
i’m digging the celts, but scared of playoff time bibby
get up KG

Apr.17 at 8:24 pm

Gerard Himself says:
Doc coach of the year? Not over Byron Scott I hope!

Jeremy says:
I am a Hawks fan. Any of you ready to change your mind. Looks like the Hawks are doing much better than most of you side-line analytics predicted. If you look at the starting 5 of Atlanta they match up very well against Boston. It’s not until you go to the bench does Atlanta have problems. Kudos to Atlanta!

[…] ‘Nique, who you might recall predicted this series wouldn’t be a cakewalk for the C’s, has the keys to Atlanta forcing a seventh and decisive game.
