Hawks Replay: Part Deux?
Something tells me that the people in charge of operating the clock at Atlanta Hawks home games didn’t get the memo this season that team is actually pretty good and is likely Playoff-bound. Because they keep screwing things up.
For the second time this season, a Hawks game is likely to be contested by an opponent because of faulty clock management by the guys in the front row. AJC columnist Sekou Smith breaks it down for us:
Down 107-104 with 11.5 seconds to play in regulation, the Hawks get three chances to tie the game and after missed 3-pointers from both Mike Bibby and Joe Johnson, Josh Childress finds Bibby in the corner on an inbounds plays and Bibby drains the shot with .5 of a second to send force overtime.
But on the ensuing play, the Raptors somehow sneak T.J. Ford behind the Hawks’ defense and he grabs a lob in the air and lays it in at the buzzer to win the game for the Raptors. Only, he didn’t get the shot off in time (a fact the officials had to clarify via replay). But what they didn’t catch was their own error tenths of a second before that, when the clock started before Ford touched that lob.
How amazing would it be if the League had two games replayed this season, and they both involved the Hawks?

I’m a sports journalist, and APTN fed us that game today. I just watched the play frame by frame, and it appears the clock was already at .3 when Ford caught the lob. And I think that’s what made the difference, so the Raps have the right to appeal.

That was terrible and the Raps got robbed twice in Atlanta in three years. There is no excuse for this mistake with the use of instant reply. None. I hate the NBA.

Steve says:
I tried to contact the NBA regarding this, but for some reason their contact forum on their website has been down since the end of last nights Raps game. Not sure if its because too many people were sending complaints so they just closed it, but I know Raps fans can be emotional so I wouldn’t doubt it.

Have you seen the Raptors board on realgm.com? (don’t know if i can mention that site here, oh well)
That board went crazy last night. Even the Hawks board is getting a ton of posts too due to Raps fans.

Yeah I was watching the game and it was clear that Toronto got shafted. The clock was at .4 when Ford caught the ball and it was released by less than .1 of a second from counting, with the messed up clock. It might work out for the Raptors if they can slide into the 6 seed instead of 5th though.

Jess says:
This was absolutely ridiculous. How are they going to let this keep happening? Is this realy the only way the Hawks can win ballgames? I mean the Raps won on an amazingly executed play (and lack of Hakws defence) and yet again they were robbed in Atlanta. This was HUGE because Washington lost and it would have put the Raps a full game ahead of them. Something needs to be done in Atlanta..And I mean I know the refs were watching the red light in the reviewing but common sense should have played a role. You have HALF A SECOND, and you’re telling me that a guy -who is already in the air- cant lay it in? I mean I have seen a guy catch turn and shoot(with .3 left) and his basket was good…maybe the refs should have looked at the clock one time in their reviewing (and I dont even think they had 100% accuracy as to whether the ball was out of TJ’s hands)..wow..and I think the reason that you think Canadians are touchy is because we’re passionate. I know that the 150 people at the game last night were glad that their scoreres table won again but I mean come on the Raps got screwed. What is it about TJ Ford that the Hawks don’t like? Wasn;t it one of his points last season that didn’t make it on the scoreboard, Horford almost decapitated him, and now the clock starts early and his game winning basket doesn’t count…hmm…

steve says:
An error in judgment during the game without the assistance of instant replay is forgivable, sometimes, but the fact that they had instant reply and they still blew the call is a joke. This should never ever happen. Whether its the score keeper or a referee, someone needs to get fined or lose their job. If its the score keeper in Atlanta, he definitely needs to lose his job.
Apr.3 at 11:25 am
Co Co says:
I seriously doubt the league is going to fire a ref because he screwed up a Hawks/Raptors game! I mean let’s be serious, the Hawks haven’t gotten this much publicity in years. The Raptors are cute, but come on. Do you really see them advancing past the first round regardless of who they play?

The call was wrong. The shot by TJ Ford should’ve counted. That being said, it wasn’t the first time in history a home team got a call to go their way. I’ve been to a ton of home games and watch every other Hawks game that I don’t go to… RARELY do we get calls for our benefit.

The way both teams played defense, they both deserved to lose. To me, the biggest shock of the night wasn’t that the Raptors blew a big lead. Or that the Hawks have won 5 in a row. Or that we’ve won 9 of 11. Or that Mike Bibby hit that crazy 3 from the corner. Or that Sam Mitchell drew up an awesome inbounds play. JOSH SMITH WAS 3 FOR 3 FROM DOWNTOWN?! Every time this cat shoots anything outside of 4 feet of the rim, I cringe. This was me 3 times last night: “What the heck are you….YAY!!!”
Apr.3 at 12:42 pm
Jukai says:
I know you don’t like to read outside of the Slam forum Co Co, so I’ll post it for you: —————————————— “Still, it’s unknown who actually started the clock at the moment in question last night. Each of the three referees is equipped with a belt pack outfitted with a button that starts the clock. The timekeeper, a Hawks team employee, also has the power to start time. The first one to hit the button triggers the countdown.” ——————————— if it’s unknown, I’m going to say the Hawks scoring table, who have already rigged games twice in the past two years, had something to do with this.
Apr.3 at 12:43 pm
Jukai says:
Really though, regardless of who did it, the Raptors beat the Hawks. I really think the victory should be overturned and the Raps given a W, and I don’t like either team.
Apr.3 at 12:46 pm
Co Co says:
Give me a break Jukai. The game is over and the Hawks have the win. That probably won’t change. Move on. I’d have to assume in a situation like that one of the refs starts the clock just so things like this don’t happen. Either way, the Raptors aren’t a real threat to anyone in the playoffs, so it doesn’t matter who they play.
Apr.3 at 12:48 pm
Myung says:
Like Lang said, if you want to add up every tenth of a second that was called wrong throughout the game, then go for it. If not, well, I doubt they’re going to replay this game. The Raps played well (especially Bosh and Rasho). They blew a huge lead. We got some home cookin’ on that TJ Ford call. Period. I’m not going to get into a war of words with you TDot fans (I know how passionate you guys are, which I really admire), but you’re talking about a team and a fanbase in the Hawks that has the longest playoff drought in the NBA. We’ve been playing in Philips Arena since 1999, and we’ve yet to host a playoff game there. Let us have our rare moment in the sun.
Apr.3 at 12:48 pm
iLL wiLL says:
Myung hit it right on. JSmoove went 2 for 2 on the long ball in the final minute. That should never happen. Plus, the Hawks had three good looks at the end which Bibby hit to send to OT.

Myung says:
iLL wiLL, I’m a diehard Hawks fan (like Lang and CoCo), but I’m also one of the few who really dislikes Josh Smith’s game. I DO think he’s the best weakside shotblocker not named Camby in the L. He’s an athletic freak who can jump out of the building. He can occasionally hit a J (as he did last night). But let’s just say I really hope we do a sign and trade this summer where we ship him off to another team. He’s one of my least favorite Hawks. You know how Duncan has the patented bank shot? Shaq has his one handed FT? AI has the crossover? Well, Josh Smith’s patented move is the “1 for 2 FT.” Watch him play. When he goes to the line for 2 FT’s, he’ll go 1 for 2. That’s his patented move. =)
Apr.3 at 1:04 pm
Jess says:
So just because the Hawks haven’t made the playoffs in so long they should be given the W - enough said..wow I dont agree but whatever whats done it done its just a shame that this game could be huge in determining playoff seeds. Whatever no matter how much we all b*tch and complain it isn’t in our hands. The Raps lost and the Hawks won. It is now up to the Leauge to step in and do what is right.
Apr.3 at 1:07 pm
iLL wiLL says:
JSmoove has improved his freethrow shooting. He just doesn’t get to the line consistently each game. When he does get to the line a lot, he usually makes em, but yeah, that 1/2 freethrow business is annoying. Smoove is the heart of the Hawks, nobody on that squad can match his heart. The guy is 23 though. He’s no Darius Miles, but certainly the Hawks would be making a mistake letting him go. He has really excelled since Bibby came on board. His field goal percentage has shot up, and he’s putting up
Apr.3 at 1:08 pm
Co Co says:
Myung you should know Josh’s value to this team. I’m so disappointed to hear you say trade him. Trade him for who? He has his faults, but he’s averageing 17 points, 8 rebounds, 3 asst, 3 blks and he’s only 22. If you think this team is better without him you’re wrong. Marvin is only effective if his jump shot is falling, if it isn’t he doesn’t contribute anything else. At least Josh attempts to play defense and when his shot isn’t falling he’ll still hustle. I’m not ready to give up on him and if they trade him then we can lookd forward to another few years without the playoffs.

I hope the Raps bounce back and go on a tear the rest of the season, hopefully we can meet in the playoffs. but thats very very unlikely Reazun

plus, he’s averaging close to 2 steals per game.
Apr.3 at 1:15 pm
Myung says:
I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree, CoCo. I would say, “I watch all his games,” but I suppose the same could be said for you. We’re just 2 hardcore Hawks fans who don’t see eye to eye on Josh. I know the stats are there. I know he’s young. But I also think his basketball IQ is low, he makes too many dumb turnovers, he has no offensive moves, he takes too many jumpers for his own good, he pouts all the time, and he argues too much with our (poor excuse of a) coach.
Apr.3 at 1:16 pm
Co Co says:
Let’s not forget Josh was the best player on the team at the beginning of the season because Joe was STRUGGLING! I was amused that Joe was the Hawk that made the All star team.
Apr.3 at 1:20 pm
Co Co says:
Who on the team doesn’t argue with that coach? If several players on the team have gotten into it with Woody, then perhaps Woody is the problem. I don’t have a problem with Josh pouting, because at least he shows some sort of emotions which no one else on the team does. That’s the reason Joe doesn’t get calls, because he doesn’t stand up for himself. Josh definitely doesn’t need to make a habit of dribbling, but I think if you can point out all the things that are wrong with him and still get the numbers he gives you, then you live with it.
Apr.3 at 1:20 pm
iLL wiLL says:
He pouts because he does not like Ty Lue taking so many jumpers. He argues with his coach. How is Woody a coach? The guy will do what it takes to win. The ‘jumpers’ that he takes, yikes. THAT he needs to work on, but he’s never going to be a go to guy or anything. He’ll be a tremendous sidekick. Hawks should be honoured they have him.
Apr.3 at 1:22 pm
iLL wiLL says:
At this point, Smith and Horford should not leave the Hawks. Anyone else is good to go. That goes for Joe Johnson too.
Apr.3 at 1:23 pm
Myung says:
What defines best player on the team, Coco? Just one’s stats? I’ve played basketball for the past 20 years of my life (never on a high level team, but I still play as much as I can), and I’d hate to play with a guy like Josh Smith, as arrogant as that may sound. But again, the BIGGER point is, I never said let’s let him walk. I never said I hated him. I never said he sucks. I simply said I don’t like his game and that I hope we do a sign and trade. There’s a difference. Then again, we have a GM who will probably… not… do the right thing.

Smith is a pretty underrated playmaker. He makes some dumb passes, but that’s because Zaza has hands of stone. As for his low basketball IQ, yeah, he can work on that, but he is doing all he can to help the team. That cannot be said for other guys on the team.
Apr.3 at 1:27 pm
Myung says:
Coco, are you an attorney? =) I said let’s agree to disagree, but it sure sounds like you’re baiting me. “If you think this team is better without him you’re wrong.” You have your opinion; I have mine. The difference between you and me is, I never once said yours is the wrong one. Either way, I’ve stated my case; you’ve stated yours. Whatever. We both pull for the same team, and I’m sure we’ll both be screaming at the top of our lungs come game 3 of Round 1 of the playoffs at Philips Arena (my wife and I have already purchased our tickets). Go Hawks!
Apr.3 at 1:29 pm
Co Co says:
I don’t think you hate him or anything like that, but I don’t see how the Hawks get better by trading him. Who would you suggest they sign and trade him for? You can not like his personality, but he’a a baller. I don’t care if he’s not a choir boy. It’s not like he gets into trouble off the court. If he has a problem with losing games, I love it! I just don’t see how you can dislike someone for being competitive.
Apr.3 at 1:31 pm
Co Co says:
I’m not trying to bait you…..promise.
Apr.3 at 1:36 pm
Myung says:
I don’t see how some people like country music, but they do, Coco. They do. Goodness, I’ve never ONCE said I dislike him. I never ONCE said anything about his competitive drive. I feel like you’re putting words in my mouth, my friend. Once again, I dislike a lot of things about his game, and I like a few things about his game… the dislikes outweigh the likes (in my opinion); therefore, I’d like to see us get some bench depth and veteran leadership and more shooters (to answer your question of how we get better by trading him). I’d be perfectly fine if we threw in Mike Woodson in the trade, even if we got back a bag of chips and $300 in return.
Apr.3 at 1:39 pm
Myung says:
But again, Co Co, I’d love to just agree to disagree… bc Hawks fans are few and far between (although I sense the bandwagon has grown from about 10 to about 100 in the past month). No need for us to stand divided. =) I dig your passion for the home team.
Apr.3 at 1:42 pm
Co Co says:
All of your complaints lead me to believe you dislike him. I mean if I pointed out 20 things I don’t like about someone every time I talk about them, one might get the feeling I don’t much like that person. One might be right. Either way, we tried the whole veteran leadership thing with the likes of Speedy, Lue, AJ, forgive me if I don’t want to go that route again. Mike Bibby is a vet Joe is a vet and hell The Josh’s have been in the league 4 years. They’re vets too.
Apr.3 at 1:43 pm
Adam says:
I think Smith definitely needs to take it to the rack more. On the other hand, he rarely has plays called for him, he has to get in where he fits in. Woodson’s whole arsenal of plays consists of Joe isos, the occasional pick and roll, and the even more occasional backdoor alleyoop to Smith. Also, you guys haven’t mentioned Childress yet. Me and my buddy were trying to decide if we need to try and keep Smith, Childress, or both…
Apr.3 at 1:43 pm
Co Co says:
But, we will agree to disagree.
Apr.3 at 1:43 pm

I say keep Chills and Smith and let Marvin walk. He’s a one trick pony.
Apr.3 at 1:47 pm
Myung says:
First of all (Chuck’s favorite phrase), I DID point out the things I do like about him (which you might have overlooked). Secondly, you pointed out in one argument how young Josh is (therefore we should overlook some of his impetuous behavior), yet you just mentioned how he’s a veteran….OK, I’ll stop here. Now I’m the one baiting you. Haha…whoops.
Apr.3 at 1:50 pm
Myung says:
I WILL agree with you on this, Co Co: Marvin IS, so far in his career, a one trick pony. A 6′9″ spot up shooter. What a shame. He’s one of my favorite Hawks, but it’s sad that he’s relegated to hitting wide open J’s (a la Steve Kerr).

Apr.3 at 1:59 pm

We also agree that Mike Woodson’s a terrible coach. That’s 2 things. =) Let’s see what else we can agree on: Al Horford is the best rookie we’ve had since Jason Terry? Chick-fil-A in the CNN Center food court is the best place to eat a pre-game meal? We need to go back to the Pac Man uniforms? Dominique Wilkins is one of the most underappreciated superstars in League history? Our home crowds have improved but still, in a word, suck? Mike Bibby needs to shave his head for the Playoffs?

I think keep Chill and Smith, but keep Chill coming off the bench a la Ginobili, move Horford to the 4 and somehow pick up a true center (I don’t know who).
I will be so pissed if Durant wins ROY.
Chik-fil-a is delicious, but that Gorin’s place has the best beer

Yeah, they’re not that bad (I have an away #15 Horford jersey), but I’d still love for us to eventually go back to the 80’s Pac Man look (Atlanta’s Air Force).

Durant is going to win ROY, Horford should win, but think back to Melo and Bron….

Myung says:
I think the most VALUABLE rookies have been Horford and Scola, but I compared Horford’s #’s with Durant’s, and I’ve got to admit that Durant has him beat, if it’s just based on stats. Don’t they normally award ROY to the rookie with the best stats and not really take into account team success (a la the MVP)? I’m with you guys: Horford’s the best rookie (and he’s quickly becoming my favorite Hawk)… but I wonder if he’ll win the award. Maybe it’ll be a split, like when Ason Kidd and Grant Hill shared it?
Apr.3 at 2:10 pm
iLL wiLL says:
Durant is asked to be the face of a franchise, go out and carry the scoring load for 82 games. Horford is not. Scola is not. Durant is putting up 20ppg. That alone will probably get him the ROY. Does he deserve it?
Apr.3 at 2:11 pm
Adam says:
Hmm, I could live with a split decision I guess. Horford is my real dad.
Apr.3 at 2:15 pm
Myung says:
If we need a center, I hear Cal Bowdler and Priest Lauderdale aren’t doing anything these days. We could also sign Solomon Jones. Oh wait. He’s already on our team. He’s just one of those 5 guys who sit there and watch the Kiss Cam during time out’s while Woody goes with the 7 man rotation.
Apr.3 at 2:16 pm
Co Co says:
Of course Durant was going to average 20 ppg, they traded away anyone who could possibly take shots away from him this summer. No one hearts Durant more than me, trust me on that, but I gotta go with my boy All who is leading all Rookies in double doubles. He contributes to wins in more than just one way. I think that should count for something

game’s done. one team got an L & the other a W. but this nonsense about Tor deserving an L & the Atl deserving a break? sure, that makes sense! & lang, we know it’s your team & this is your block, but should the final seconds in any tight game…in any sport…never be questioned because seconds could’ve been lost earlier in the game? you serious?

[…] And it looks like, technically, the clock did start a little early. But my point, which I made earlier this morning here in Mutoni’s post, is that I’m pretty sure the clock starts that early on every inbounds play in every game. It’s impossible for a human to be correct all the time, so we often have to accept the closest thing to perfection that’s available. […]

While it’s true that the Raptors blew a 17 point lead, it’s also true that the referee first ruled that Ford’s layup was good. After PONdering DI REPLAY(sorry, i couldn’t resist), the refs ruled that the ball was still touching TJ’s fingertip(s) when time expired, but that was only due to the fact that the game clock was started early, soo…the NBA should factor in the lost tenth of a second or so and decide whether or not it had an effect on TJ getting the shot off on time.

Al Horford says he tipped the inbound. Regardless it’s too close to call either way. But if Horford tipped it it’s a moot point.

It dosent matter if they gave up a 100 point lead, the team who scores the most points in 48 minutes is the winner. Thats 48 mintues. Not 47 minutes and 59.8 seconds.

ill will- Breaking out the salami and chees is never a bad thing, provided you do it at appropriate times and don’t over use it. Also, I feel that it is something that needs to be shared with NBA fans teh World over.
*”Break out the salami and cheese…” is something that Raptors play-by-play announcer Chuck Swirsky says when he feels that the Raps have no chance of blowing a lead. He also says “Onions, baby, onions!” after a nice play.

Also, if Horford tipped the inbounds, like he claims he did, shouldn’t the clock have expired before the ball even came close to touching TJ’s hands?
(I’m not crying about losing the game, cuz if we had played better it wouldn’t have even come down to this; I’m just trying to factor logic into the debate).

So, guy who wrote this Marcel Mutoni, the clock in question was actually started by an NBA ref, from his hip. So it wasnt anything at the scorers tables, or anything like the first flook. Go Hawks
