Devin Ebanks Jordan Brand Classic Diary Day 2
A full day for the Jordan Brand All-Stars.
Last year we set the internet on fire with our Jordan Brand Classic game week diary, which was delivered by Patrick Patterson, who spent the week debating what college to attend. We’re going in a similar direction this year, as Indiana signee Devin Ebanks, who is now free to go somewhere else after Kelvin Sampson was let go, takes his time making his own decision. We featured Devin in the Punks section of SLAM two issues ago, but Devin has a lot more to say (and not just about the college choice, though most of these new commenters have a one-track mind). Read below and then check back later for a third entry from the young man, and be sure to watch or attend the game, which you can learn more about at JordanBrandClassic.com.
As told to Konate Primus
Today I’m going to give you guys a li’l recap of what me and the fellas have been up to on this trip so far.
Woke up Thursday morning, had some breakfast, and then we had a li’l meeting just to meet all the Jordan Brand people that are taking care of everything for us this weekend. Directly following that we went to practice, and I had a lot of fun playing with my teammates. The level of competitiveness and talent is incredible. We ran some 3-man weave drills and hit the weights kind of light—a couple of sets nothing major. We ran a scrimmage and everybody was just happy to be playing ball, so that was fun. After practice we hit the showers and talked to the media. I spoke to about 100 people today but’s its all good [smiling.] Of course, they all asked the same questions: “So Devin, uh, where are you going to school?” and “are you still undecided?”. And I gave all of them the same answer: “I am still undecided.” I need to visit a couple more schools first and check out campus life for myself. I was at West Virginia last week, next week I have Rutgers and then Memphis. So we’ll see what happens.
Later on in the evening we had the Boost Mobile Jam session. Dunk contest, the point guard obstacle course for the fans, I cant remember what its called but you know what I’m talking about, and a game of around the world with Styles P, Jadakiss, DJ Clue? and Emily King. I didn’t participate in the around the would but I tried to give the crowd a li’l something in the dunk contest but that didn’t really work out as planned. I lost in the first round but hey its all in good fun, I enjoyed it a lot. Big shout out to my man Iman [Shumpert]—he did like a crazy 360 dunk, it was sick!
I’m looking forward to the game at the Garden tomorrow night. My mom will be there; she couldn’t make it to the jam session because she had to work but she’ll definitely be at the Garden. And all my folks from L.I.C should be in the building and they get to see me play. It’s definitely going to be live in there so I can’t wait.
Today we’re going to be kicking it with some li’l kids at P.S. 307 which should be cool. Later that day we have a scrimmage and an award dinner so I should have some cool stuff to tell y’all about.
Until next time… Peace!

Devin, we need you at INDIANA!!! Coach Crean is a stud and he is buddies with Sampson! I think he will treat you right and and the fans at IU will love you!! Think about what Coach did for Dwayne Wade and he wasn’t a 5 star recruit like you coming out of high school?? All I want to ask you is “How many championships does Memphis, West Virginia and Rutgers have??? Chances are that even if you go to Memphis or West Virginia, there is no championship in sight!! Memphis had its best chance this year to do it and they couldn’t, so with everyone going to the NBA, I don’t think that it’s a possibility. I think if you come to IU, we will be a lot better than any of the schools your thinking about going to and you will be in the Big Ten with the chance to win the conference and get National Exposure!!!

XOXOXO
Hi Devin! We would love to have you down in Memphis. You will get to play in the most exciting and innovative system in basketball. You will NBA ready when you decide to go. You will be part of the city’s most cherished entity. And, there are more beautiful girls in Memphis (like me!) than anywhere that are dying to hang with you! Can’t wait to see you at Balla U. in Tiger blue!

Imagine having the Empire State Building lit up in SCARLET in your honor! Imagine having your highlights shown in Times Square! Imagine 20k fans in SCARLET cheering you on in the BET at The Garden! Imagine playing in what is widely known as one of the top home courts in America! Come to RU and make it happen!
Apr.18 at 4:34 pm
Ryan Jones says:
I like the realistic nature of RU fans: All of them are hyping up Devin’s chance to play in the Big East tournament, as if they’ve already accepted the fact that they won’t make the NCAAs. Which they pretty much never do.

cmt says:
Devin, Memphis is the place for you. Talk it over with Tyreke this weekend, come down for your visit and understand what you will be walking into. We are this century’s team, not last century’s. Calpari will have us back in the final four this season. Just imagine, you in the Final Four. Then off to the NBA.
Apr.18 at 6:23 pm
IU fan says:
seriously devin, why do you need to go visit the other schools? ill break it down for you. rutgers sucks, WVU requires you sleep with barn animals for team initiations, Texas is ok but its a football school, and then you have IU, a basketball school where you could start right away and make the highlights on ESPN every night. I left memphis out because you cant tell me calipari is going to take your game to the next level when he cant win the most important game of his career up 9 points with an extremely talented team. you might as well go to tennessee over memphis since webber knows how to finish games. But to sum it up, you’re better off with a coach like tom crean or rick barnes, and i should know since were so close and I know your whole situation. (Joke) Good luck buddy in whatever you choose.
Apr.18 at 9:37 pm
chris says:
Going to rutgers is the equivalent of committing career suicide.
Apr.18 at 9:42 pm
Jeff says:
Please reconsider going to IU. Bloomington is the best place to play college ball. You would love it. No more controversy and Tom Crean’s system would suit your style of play.
Apr.18 at 9:42 pm
chris says:
Memphis went to the nc game, wv went to the sweet 16, and texas went to the elite 8, rutgers lost 20 games and didnt make the big east tourney. Go to memphis or wv.
Apr.18 at 9:45 pm
old school says:
The unenlightened talking trash about RU used to say the same thing about RU football, but they aren’t saying that anymore, are they? AT RU you’re an instant legend Devin, part of the biggest turnaround in NCAA history. Come and make it happen. If you’re truly THE MAN, then there’s no bigger stage than the Big East in the NJ/NY area to prove it.
Apr.18 at 9:51 pm
old school says:
All the people running down Rutgers are AFRAID of you going there. chris is a Villanova fan. RU certainly didn’t hurt Quincy Douby’s chances of making it to the league, did it? If you’ve got the talent, you’ll go. Speaking of Villanova, ask Randy Foye if Fred Hill can help you get the NBA.
Apr.18 at 10:31 pm
RUbballman says:
devin, chris doesnt know what he is talking about how is going to rutgers career suicide? the last time we had real talent to compete in the ncaa we went to the final four in 76…with you on the team, the current players we have, and the other players coming to RU, we have the talent to make the ncaa tourney and make a run…this is your choice, but RU is a great choice and you will have amazing fan support in your time in new brunswick/piscataway
Apr.18 at 10:45 pm
Dan says:
Yo Devin, Going to Rutgers would be awesome for you as far as the NBA is concerned. If you rip it up with Rutgers and lead them to the NCAA’s that would look better then getting Memphis back to yet another Final Four. Plus, you have the opportunity to play and dominate in front of your family and friends. Something that only Rutgers offers.
Apr.18 at 11:06 pm
Rutgers Rising says:
Devin- Come to Rutgers. They are easily the best choice. First of all when you succeed at RU, you and Mike Rosario will be the “Princes of New Jersey.” That’s much better than being the Prince of WV or Memphis. Also, a Rutgers degree means something. And, you have to factor in that Fred Hill is good at coaching guards and perimeter players (3’s). You are a natural 3 and would be a good fit over here. Look at what Fred helped do with Randy Foye and Quincy Douby. Randy Foye came to Villanova because of Fred Hill and worked himself into a lottery pick. Quincy Douby stayed at Rutgers because of Fred Hill and became a mid first round pick. With your skills, Fred Hill could help you become a Top 3 pick next year.

the chocalate thunder says:
cinderella vs. expectations….. I understand that RU only hangs in becasue it is an option to stay close to home BUT one things to consider is the opportunity to SHOCK the world. The Memphis’, WVU, Texas, Indiana, etc of the world expect NCAA tourney success but to achieve success with a team that has been lacking it over the past 15 years (at the very least) in the media capital of the country….. they eat these stories up. There’s no duplicating the exposure of a collegiate star like March Madness and teaming up with the likes of Rosario, Chandler, Echenigue, Coburn, etc. you my friend could be the catalyst to something very special that everyone will hear about…. Best of luck with your decision…..
Apr.19 at 12:15 am
RU Rocks says:
Devin: Rutgers is the obvious choice! With you, Rosario, Chandler, and N’Diaye, Rutgers will definitely be dancing next year and you will get media exposure in the biggest media market in the world and you would be near your family.
Apr.19 at 12:51 am
Josh B says:
Again, RU would be a great opportunity to become a legendary player. With the players FHJ has coming in, takes 1 superstar to bring it all together. Playing for an established program is awesome, but there’s something pretty damn special about being “the guy” who turns a program around…

Kev says:
You can easily get to a 1-2 seed with Memphis. You, Reke, AAA, Dozier, Taggart, Kemp, Robinson, Mack, Niles as well as others. That’s another loaded Memphis team. This style of play will make you look like a star. Dribble drive, attach the basket. Play in the FedEx forum in front of 17,000+ people each night. Is it really that hard of a choice?
Apr.19 at 7:49 am
Ben Osborne says:
If Rutgers has so many passionate fans how come the attendance at the games there is always so low?

Devin, Please look at the great new DVD video “History of Indiana University Basketball” that just came out a few months ago. It tells it all,the history, the past players & phenomenal teams. You’ll be cheating yourself to not at least take a look at what Indiana basketball is all about.

Gary Waters says:
E—to da Bankkkk to the flooooorrrrrr I just can’t take it anymoreeeeee Mr Ebanks, tell me, Do you remember who was on Memphis 3 years ago? Or rather, can you name someone on Texas or WVU from 3 years ago? Me neither. Does Dejuan Wagner ring a bell? I can’t remember him either. But, I can tell you that everybody knows who Brian Leonard and Ray Rice are. Why? because they are legends. Legends are remembered. Winners only last while they are there but Legends last forever. I Am Legend. Are you?

navynap says:
Devin, go to whatever school you like best. I’m an IU guy in the military and where-ever you go, i’ll still support IU and that team. And i’ll watch you when i can. Follow your heart friend.

Michael Jordon says:
Devin, I really like your game and I feel your best bet would be becoming part of Rutgers Super Freshman class. There is something to be said for your friends and family being able to go to your games. Stay home, get a great education, and make NY/NJ proud.
Apr.19 at 3:15 pm
DL says:
Devin, If its exposure, a great coach and one of the best college campuses around then you are crazy if you don’t go to IU. You won’t get the TV exposure you get at IU anywhere else but maybe Duke. You ever hear of a guy name D Wade??? His college coach that turned him from a no name to a super star, Coach Crean. Then look at the campus in Bloomington. If the campus is your deciding factor than Indiana is the easy choice.
Don’t let the bad press IU has got fool you. There will not be any post seasons bans. IU cleaned house and made the right decisions. This would be your team and you would be the star. You would be unstoppable in the Big 10. Good luck wherever ya end up but the Hoosiers still want you.

tiger ballers says:
Memphis= 2 straight elite eight and a nc game with a ncaa coach of the year. Top 5 incoming player and the best offense in the nation. Devin Memphis is the only choice. We Want You in Memphis Blue!
Apr.19 at 4:45 pm
MJF says:
Devin, it’s a simple decision, you want a better life for your family, audition for a NBA team on a daily basis, play for coach who coached in the pros, play a pro-style (the dribble-drive offense), play in the best college and pro arena in the country, and I leave you with this, Derrick Rose came into the year ranked below players, like OJ Mayo, Jerald Baylis, Kevin Love, and Michael Beasley, ONE YEAR running this offense has made him maybe the FIRST pick in the draft, the same can happen to you and Tyreke, it up to you!!!

Corey Preece says:
At this stage in the game I don’t see any reason why you, Mr. Ebanks, wouldn’t enroll in the NBA training academy aka. West Virginia University. Think about it, if Huggins can produce studs like Kenyon Martin and Jason Maxiell, plus turn a so-so Joe Alexander into the most dominate player in the Big East, what could he do with you? Forget Rutgers, there are more kids from New Jersey at WVU then go to Rutgers. Though there is no question you would flourish anywhere you choose, why not get on board with Huggs and his rising crop and win a National Championship.
Apr.21 at 12:49 pm
Hill is the Man says:
Out of all your choices, the players at RU are the least selfish and will give you the best chance to be noticed by the NBA because make a losing team a winner shows a lot more than keeping a winning team a winner. You can accomplish a lot more at RU.

Devin:
If you go to Memphis— Evans isn’t gonna pass u the ball and sadly ull become just another face in the crowd.
If you go to Texas— You’ll be another face in the crowd, yea, they’ll be happy but they wont appreciate you.
If you go to WVU– u’ll be in the middle of fricking no where, and in a town that loves football not basketball.
If you come to Rutgers— You will be loved. Every kid will wear a jersey with Ebanks on the back. U see what happened to Rutgers football, u could do that for Rutgers basketball, The RAC IS THE LOUDEST ARENA, u could make the roof come off of it. The NY media will love and embrace a story like u. Ure name and Rutgers Basketball will be one forever. No one will say a sentence that mentions Rutgers Basketball without the name Ebanks in it. You can’t same that for any of ure other options. Also, RU girls are HOTT. On the Ebanks of the Old Raritan will become the alma mater.
