Amare Has Nash’s MVP Vote

by Marcel Mutoni

You could make a compelling argument that ever since Shaq got traded from Miami to Phoenix, Amare Stoudemire has been the best player in the League.

With apologies to Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James, but Amare has been on an entirely different level over the last two months, and thanks to his superhuman efforts, Phoenix has an outside shot at ending up with the best record in the West.

Perhaps not surprisingly then, teammate Steve Nash thinks STAT should be in the running for the League’s top individual honor.

“I pass the torch to STAT,” two-time MVP winner Steve Nash said, referring to teammate AmarĂ© Stoudemire. “He’s deserving.”

Nash, who also likes Chris Paul’s chances, was quick to point out that the award should go to the player whose team ends up on top.

Sorry Amare, though you’ve been incredible of late, you simply entered the conversation a little bit too late.

As the season winds down, and with the Lakers having arguably the easiest road ahead among the top MVP contenders, most seem to agree that it remains Kobe’s award to lose.

Kobe might have already lost it.

Holly MacKenzie says:
Marcel, I don’t see our boy getting it this year. I think it’s CP3’s award to lose right now. Amare is going to be ridiculous to face in the playoffs if he keeps this up. His free throws are looking great.

Apr.2 at 12:11 pm

ciolkstar says:
I think Kobe will still get it. Mostly, because of how ridiculous it is that he hasn’t been MVP yet. CP3 is the definition of Most valuable Player right now. And, honestly, so is Lebron.

Apr.2 at 12:13 pm

TADOne says:
Wow, you guys really think the tide has turned against Kobe that much? I’m still up in the air as to who gets it personally. I do think the LeBron is out of the running, IMO. I want to lean towards CP3, but Kobe still makes quite a compelling argument. It will definitely be the closest finish I have ever witnessed.

Apr.2 at 12:14 pm

TADOne says:
Let me rephrase that: I don’t think LeBron is out of the running entirely, but between the top 3, I don’t see how he overtakes Kobe or CP3.

Apr.2 at 12:15 pm

vmcb says:
Amare has been absolutely unguardable since Shaq came into town. I think CP3 deserves the award, though. Earlier in the season I was convinced Kobe was going to get it, but the Lakers have slipped up lately, whereas the Bugs have kept strong with Chris Paul at the helm.

Apr.2 at 12:15 pm

Jukai says:
Kobe will get it, really. CP3 and Lebron are more deserving but Kobe’s going to get it.

but who gets exec of the year (ainge?) and coach of the year (scott) i read somewhere (here?) that chris paul’s chances were smaller than kobe’s because his team hasn’t sustained a serious injury all season… interesting point, though is it one that will sway enough of the voters? my two cents: it’s kobe’s mvp to lose. the best player taking a very so-so team so close to the top of the west? best AND most important player to his team? how can he lose???

Apr.2 at 12:38 pm

Myles Brown says:
Im still holding out until the season is done, especially since the HOrnets and Lakers still play each other (and the Lakers play San An right after that), but those two games against the Grizz and Cats really hurt Kobes case. If theyd won, theyd still be on top of the Conference. But its not to late. And poor Bron, first no MVP, then Jay Z gets married. Poor kid cant catch a break

CP3 or Kobe. Bron will get his when the Cavs have a better season. Garnet and Pierce are too good together for one to get it. Amare wouldn’t be in the running if he didn’t play with Nash and Shaq.

Apr.2 at 1:13 pm

canadian says:
CP3 or Kobe. Bron will get his when the Cavs are better and for anyone on the Celtics to get it you’d have to give it to Garnet and Pierce.

Apr.2 at 1:16 pm

I’m pretty much certain that Kobe will get it.

Apr.2 at 1:41 pm

Jukai says:
what’s all this with CP3’s MVP to lose? Kobe’s been throwing down 50 points with a dislocated pinky so bad, that you or me couldn’t get through the day with it. Not to mention, his teams gone through so many shifts and injuries, and the expectations on it were so much lower than when they started… unless Lakers tank to 7th-8th place, it’s gotta be Kobe’s.

SLAM, didn’t we already have this conversation? Amare is great, but his lack of defense is going to be what holds him back. I hate to say it (because I’m a bonifide hater), but Kobe really deserves it this year. The only way I see him not getting it is if he chews another refs ear off… and on that note, KB24 has 13 techs… but if it were ANY other player they would have had 40 by now. Have you seen the way he talks to the officials? Pretty ridiculous.

Apr.2 at 3:12 pm

Myles Brown says:
What Paul could do to convince me beyond a shadow of a doubt is assure me that the Hornets aren’t going to be this year’s Mavericks. The Hornets are certainly an overachieving team and Pauls certainly responsible for that. But theyre not the best team in the league and hes not the best player in the league, so its not such an easy decision. Especially when Kobe Bryant can make those claims. It’s close, and it’ll stay close until the seasons over.

Apr.2 at 3:33 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
No assurances in this League. Chris Paul led the Hornets to 50-plus wins while putting up historic numbers at (perhaps) the game’s toughest position. And unlike another certain point guard who may or may not have won consecutive MVPs, he plays exceedingly well on either side of the ball. If I had a vote–which I don’t–I’d cast it for Paul. Um, today.

Apr.2 at 4:18 pm

No, Ray Allen is Jermaine. But Pierce? A more successful solo career, yet still in the shadow of big brother? At the risk of misinterpretation, Im gonna go ahead and call him Janet.

I think KG has the “misfortune” of having his MVP traits be less noticeable. When Rondo was icing two free throws at the end of the 22-point comeback against the Spurs, all I could think of was KG being in Rondo’s head all season. Living in Boston and being able to watch every KG game for a whole season has been the biggest treat of the past 20 years of watching the NBA. Still, my vote is for CP3.

Man, why do people forget about KG all of a sudden? Regardless if they are in the East or West…the Celtics have the best record in the entire L. And I feel like KG has not only provided his talent, but he has came in and provided the leadership that team desperatly needed. He basically helped breath new life into that franchise. So I feel like he should still get the MVP award. I like CP3, he is certainly a legit canidate…but I feel like people are just jumping on the bandwagon at the end of the season (people have been jumping on and off bandwagons all season) what is so different from what CP3 is doing from what D-Will has been doing? I like Lebron, I wouldn’t argue if he got it, he has certainly taken his game to the next level. Kobe has been amazing…but Kobes attitude might cost him the MVP, sad but true. Also, Amare seems like a cool guy, but I was LMAO at Steve Nash talking about Amare for MVP. They should be thanking Shaq for allowing Amare to play in his rightful position at PF.

Apr.2 at 6:54 pm

Dacre says:
I’m going to go and give the award to Kobe. Almost out of pity. Almost.

Apr.2 at 7:26 pm

Joel O's says:
Lebron’s Cavs wouldn’t survive out west, honestly. CP3 gets the advantage because his team is flawed… while the Lakers are stacked. But the Lakers have played much of this year with various injuries (remember at one time the word “curse” was being thrown about?) so they’ve been through adversity and an incomplete roster much of the year, and have still been very successful. And, flawed though most Hornets players may be, some of them are pretty damn good at what they CAN do, whether its Peja’s shooting or Chandler’s solid presence - which allows CP’s leadership to bring out their potential. Hence, the Laker team hasn’t been as stacked as people think, and the Hornets aren’t thaaat bad. I do hope Kobe wins it though.

Apr.2 at 7:31 pm

Joel O's says:
Don’t think Lebron’s gonna win it. MJ posted a similar 37, 5 and 5 in his 3rd season but lost it to Magic, whose team ultimately won the ring that year (I think).

Apr.2 at 8:01 pm

AB_40 says:
so what nash acualy is saying is give KG the damn thing. He should get it or the DPOY he’s turned the celts program around. I ain’t on their bandwagon though if cleveland advances LeBron will be a hard 1manshow to stop. And then there is detroit who will whipe the no7 and destroy orlando 4-1 in the seccond round to face em all fresh in the confrence finals. I like the spurs becoming no1 cuzz them and LA in the seccond round will be like last years playoffs the best matchup in the seccond round New Orleans or Utah would lose to the spurs in the seccond round… Spurs, Lakers, Pistons and Celtics are the teams most likely to make the finals with Phoenix and cleveland outsiders, cleveland would be no 10 in the west people if lebron would get mvp this year that would be a disgrace

Apr.2 at 9:35 pm

Abcdcamp21 says:
CP3 MVP…..sorrry lebron, big fan…u definitely leaving the league with the most MVPs by any one player. CP3 waaaaay too consistently dominating. New Orleans no longer a doormat of the NBA western conference, nuff said!

Apr.2 at 9:54 pm

tealish says:
Chris Paul without a doubt. I think most of you all have started accepting the fact that NO is at/near the top of the West. No, people, that is STILL a ridiculous feat. Look at their lineup, they shouldn’t even be sniffing at the West’s elite. Rafer is a little b*tch, but the b*tch is right in saying David West is no superstar. Hell, he’s no All Star either.
But anyways, what I’m getting at is this: NO has no place among the top 3, and even if they slip to 3rd or 4th, the MVP award belongs to CP3.
Kobe, nope. Maybe if you want to crown him for his collective work over the past 4 years. But honestly, he hasn’t been the MVP in any season of his career. It’s unfortunate, but he never truly deserved it - and it’s not the L hating on him.
If anything, the L acts like his b*tch. Black Mamba should be sitting at double his current techs if the L had the balls to call it straight. But of course, it’s the NBA so…

one thing i haven’t heard anybody say yet but has been on my mind is this: KG’s not having an OUTSTANDING season individually (not jus talkin bout stats, but rather impact) compared to even his best years in Minny.. yes, he’s the center of what has taken place in Boston this year, and yes, that’s been wonderful for the NBA.. but his impact in games for Boston has been NOWHERE near how Kobe or Chris Paul affects games on a regular basis.. i remember when Kevin Garnett would DOMINATE games - be unstoppable with the midrange jumpers and intimidate the sh*t outta the other team when he’s in the paint on D - and he hasn’t really done that more than 3-4 times this year. whereas Kobe, Chris Paul & even Lebron do it routinely the way Garnett used to.. i would say Chris Paul has the edge so far, but i want to see Kobe have a ridiculous final few weeks to clinch his 1st award.. the fact that he hasn’t won one yet doesn’t seem right. Chris Paul & Lebron will have their years later on.. Stoudemire deserves a mention if he continues this absurdly efficient offensive display though..

Apr.3 at 5:37 am

GGG says:
Lebron could average 50ppg and still wouldnt get it…everybody expects him to be a beast day in, day out and I’d say thats why Kobe has never won it and probably never will. (CP3 is my guess with the Hornets massive turn-around).

Apr.3 at 5:56 am

TC says:
Chris Paul is the real MVP this season but Kobe would get it. I know the award is based on this season’s performance but Kobe has done too much in his career to lose this one to a third year PG. Lebron’s team is all that great. And Garnett has 2 other all stars on his team. The Mamba will win it!

I see Kobe winning for multiple reasons. 1: The Lakers are having a great season and one of the greatest coaches of all time is saying that it’s his best all-around season yet. 2: He probably should have won it in 2006. That year was ridiculous. 3: The Lakers have sustained a good record despite injuries to almost every starter. 4: He’s probably playing the best defense of his career.

Apr.3 at 7:24 pm

stan redding says:
I believe Kobe is the MVP. There are two sides of the court, and Kobe is one of the best defenders in the league, and quite possibly the best perimeter defender. Chris Paul gets steals based on gambling the passing lanes, but his man to man defense is horrible. Sure he gets assists, but that’s what a PG is supposed to do. Should we name it the MVPG? Chris Paul has also had a healthy team the majority of the season. With 2 allstars in David West and Chandler playing great all year. Kobe has never played with all his starters together once this season, NOT ONCE. Bynum has been injured for months, Mihm all year long, Gasol out 3 weeks, and Ariza has been out 2 months as well. Kobe is also been playing with a finger that needs surgery, yet he put it off so his team wouldn’t fall out of the playoffs (as it would if he was not playing). I think Kobe has had a much better year when you analyze it, both on defense and offense (as he has made all his teammates better) and the adversity he has faced this year with injuries to him and his teammates proves to me that Kobe is easily the MVP…also the Lakers after so many injuries are only 1.5 games from 1st place. Kobe is the MVP when one looks at it objectively without bias. Kobe is a polarizing athlete, but truth is truth. This is his year, and it would be ashame if the medias hate for this man comes into conflict with the proper vote.
