The Post Up: Hornets Outlast Cavaliers
CP3 My MVP?
By: Holly MacKenzie
Last night, I was being greedy and wanting that 20th assist for Chris Paul. Of course CP3 gets it and he gets it on the final play of the game, for the game, on a dish to David West. West drains the jumper with .6 seconds left on the clock and the Hornets walk off of the floor victorious. 15 points, 20 assists, 2 steals, 1 block and only 1 turnover for Paul. This is really getting ridiculous. I think my MVP vote has changed for good this time.
And, Kobe getting thrown out of the game last night really wasn’t pretty. Neither was that loss to the Bobcats, but I have to admit I didn’t see much of it. Yes, I know. I fell asleep sometime in the first quarter, not really sure. I woke up after 4am with the light still on, TV still on and I was in one of those annoying states of confusion where you don’t really understand what is going on.
The game of the night was definitely Cleveland and New Orleans. It’s too bad more people couldn’t have watched it because it was really nice. While Bron was relatively quiet (except for the Cavs final possession of the game where he gives them the lead with 7 seconds left on a layup where you just know it is going in, because really, who is going to deny LeBron James), Z came up big for them and it is always fun to watch that guy go off.
It’s Thursday which means two things…. NBA on TNT and… NCAA tourney returns. Perfect day before the weekend. And, you know what TNT’s got for us all tonight. Dallas @ Denver. Cannot wait for this one. Portland and Golden State lost a little bit of its excitement with Roy sitting it out, but any chance to watch those Warriors in action is alright with me. I’m also really thankful they are not subjecting us to the horror that would be Detroit and Miami facing off.
While I mention the NCAA Tournament, I want to give some love to Canadian sports station The Score for their extensive coverage of the tourney. The person responsible for making those highlight videos is killing it.
It was refreshing to see Jose Calderon give up his starting spot to TJ Ford because he knows Ford plays better as a starter. I’m still not sure how I feel about the distribution of minutes between these two (although, both were on the floor together at the end of their victory over Detroit last night), but Calderon’s team-first attitude is admirable. The guy just wants to win and he will go to the general manger and coach to sacrifice his spot if need be.
Speaking of Ford, those two dishes to Jamario on the break were crazy.
Shaq was showing some serious class yesterday when he decided to call out Ricky Davis and Chris Quinn of the Heat. I just don’t get it. They traded him so he could get out of a losing situation, he is with a supposed contender so why can’t he just be quiet. Miami has got enough trouble to worry about without him running his mouth. I’m on Ricky’s side here and I never thought I would wind up defending him before. At least Davis suits up every night, even in Miami.
New Orleans 100 Cleveland 99
With two MVP candidates going head to head, the game between the Hornets and Cavaliers went down to the final possession with each team’s star producing in the final seconds. After three close quarters of basketball with neither team leading by more than 9 points, the Hornets led 73-71 at the start of the fourth. The final period saw the two teams trading baskets and leads with neither team being able to shake the other. In the final minute, Zydrunas Ilgauskas tipped in a miss by LeBron James to get the Cavs within one. A missed three-pointer by Jannero Pargo turned into a layup for James with seven seconds left in the game, giving the Cavaliers a 99-98 lead and the Hornets a timeout. On their final possession of the game, Chris Paul got the ball and calmly drove into the lane, drawing three Cleveland defenders before turning and kicking the ball out to David West who was waiting near the foul line. West drained a jumper with .6 seconds remaining in the game and the Hornets held onto the best record in the Western Conference. Peja Stojakovic led New Orleans with 25 points, David West scored 20 and Paul finished with 15 points, 20 assists and only 1 turnover. Tyson Chandler added 13 points and 1 1 rebounds and Pargo scored 13 off of the bench. Ilgauskas had 29 points and 15 boards for Cleveland. James finished with 21 points and 8 assists, Anderson Varajao scored 11 points to go with 15 rebounds and Sasha Pavlovic added 10 points in the loss.
Boston 117 Phoenix 97
With their seven game winning streak snapped in Detroit the other night the Phoenix Suns came to Boston looking to start another one. The Celtics were trying to do the same and thanks to a strong second half they were victorious in blowing the game open and dropping the Suns 117-97. With the game tied up at 57 at the break, the Suns came out flat to start the third while the Celtics managed to find their rhythm. At the end of the period, the Celtics had outscored Phoenix 27-16 and held an 11 point lead. The fourth quarter was more of the same with the Suns unraveling as Boston found their stride. The Celtics outscored Phoenix 33-24 in the final quarter and the end result was a twenty-point blow out. Kevin Garnett led the way for Boston with 30 points and 6 assists, Paul Pierce scored 27 points, Kendrick Perkins had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen added 10 points apiece. Amare Stoudemire led the Suns with 32 points. Shaquille O’Neal had 16 points, Boris Diaw scored 15 points and Steve Nash added 12 points and 9 assists.
Philadelphia 121 Chicago 99
While the Sixers have not strung together 22 straight victories like the Houston Rockets did this season, they have done something similar in going from out of the playoff race to firmly in the middle all within the span of a month. Going 11-2 in March and winning 19 of their last 24 games has helped them move up the rankings. Last night they faced a Bulls team trying to do the same and they continued their winning as they defeated them 121-99. With the Bulls trailing by 13 at the end of the first quarter, they were playing catch up the rest of the way through and the Sixers were not interested. Using an 11-0 run in the second quarter to take a 65-49 advantage at the break, Philadelphia held off Chicago in the third and went ahead by as many as 26 points in the final quarter of a game where the Bulls never lead. They shot 54% in the contest while holding Chicago to only 39% and outscored them on fasttbreak points 30-2. Louis Williams led Philadelphia with 23 points while Andre Iguodala scored 21 points to go with 9 assists. Thaddeus Young had 20 points and Andre Miller scored 9 points to go with 18 assists and only 1 turnover. Thabo Sefolosha had 20 points off of the bench to lead the Bulls while Kirk Hinrich added 18 points and 6 assists. Andres Nocioni scored 16 points, Ben Gordon had 12 and Joakim Noah added 10.
Toronto 89 Detroit 82
With a change at the point guard spot that was suggested by starting point Jose Calderon to go along with another tweak in the lineup by starting Rasho Nesterovic rather than Andrea Bargnani, things worked out for the Raptors against the Pistons in Toronto last night. After a close first half that had Detroit leading 35-33, the Raptors outscored Detroit 28-16 in the third to take a 10 point advantage into the final quarter. Toronto opened the fourth on a 7-0 run but the Pistons would cut the lead down to five before the Raptors pushed the lead back to eight points and went on to the victory. Chris Bosh had 21 points for Toronto while Nesterovic scored 15 points to go with 9 rebounds and 4 blocks. Jose Calderon and TJ Ford each scored 13 points with Ford also dishing 9 assists. Chauncey Billups scored 24 points and had 9 assists to lead the Pistons as rookie Rodney Stuckey scored 16 off of the bench, Rasheed Wallace had 15 points and Tayshaun Prince added 10.
Houston 97 Minnesota 86
After finding themselves in a battle that was too close for comfort against the Timberwolves, the Rockets looked to Tracy McGrady to get them the victory last night. He responded, scoring 10 of his 23 points in the final period of the game where the Rockets were able to hold the TWolves at bay, after holding a nine-point advantage going into the period. After the TWolves started the fourth on a 12-5 run, McGrady stepped up and drained three straight baskets to keep the Rockets ahead by double-figures and go on to the victory. They only led by as many as 12 points in the contest despite out-rebounding Minnesota by 20 in the game (58-38). In addition to his 23 points, McGrady also finished with 11 rebounds and 9 assists. Luis Scola was huge for the Rockets, coming up with 18 points and 18 rebounds. Rafer Alston scored 12 points and Carl Landry added 11. Al Jefferson’s 21 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocked shots led the Timberwolves. Ryan Gomes had 17 points and 9 rebounds, Rashad McCants scored 16 off of the bench and Kirk Snyder added 12.
Washington 104 Seattle 99
With the Philadelphia 76er’s on their heels for that fifth spot in the East, each and every game is going to be important for the Wizards as the season comes to a close. Trailing Seattle 56-50 at the half last night, the Wizards were unable to cut the deficit in the third quarter where they went down by as many as 17 points before using a 10-0 run to go into the fourth trailing by seven. In the final period, they had an unlikely hero as Roger Mason stepped into the game off of the bench and knocked down five three-pointers in the quarter to help Washington drop in 36 points while holding Seattle to only 24, enough for them to hang on for the victory. Roger Mason had 22 points for the Wizards, Caron Butler scored 21 points to go with 9 assists, Antawn Jamison had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Brendan Haywood added 13. The Sonics were led by Kevin Durant’s 32 points while Nick Collison had 9 points and 21 rebounds. Damien Wilkins and Jeff Green scored 13 points apiece in the loss.

Which one of you **** is gonna post second?

Logan says:
Hey H, yeah the bobcat loss was bad….i dont know why Kobe got tossed….was not able to watch the game….Memphis up next so everything will be back to normal soon…unless Kwame gets motivated and….wait did i use Kwame and motivation in the same sentence? Is he still on the Grizz? CP is playing out of his mind now, but I still think Kobe deserves the MVP this year….
Mar.27 at 9:00 am
Logan says:
maio, since you posted second, does that make you the ****? just kidding bruh…
and yeah, Shaq….well dont want to waste time talking about him
Mar.27 at 9:04 am
Holly MacKenzie says:
Logan, he kicked/tapped the ball towards the ref. A friend who was at the game said it was more of a tap than a kick but when you’ve already got 14 techs you have to play smarter than that. It will be interesting to see if Kobe can keep it together in the remaining games and not get another T. One more and he gets that mandatory one game suspension. Uh Oh.

Cheryl says:
I was happy to see the Celtics whip up on the Suns last night. My feelings for Shaq right now are jacked and because of it, I’m going for any team that plays them now. Maybe I’ll get over it in time, but I’m not sure. I wouldn’t have minded it too much if he’d dissed Riley’s lack of offseason moves and letting Posey walk–I agree with him there. But to diss the training staff and to throw the kid Quinn and even Buckets under the buss was trifling. What’s his problem anyway? I was pulling for a reconciliation with Shaunie, but I now I hope she does a “Juanita Jordan” on him. Do I sound salty?
Mar.27 at 9:10 am
Eboy says:
Can’t blame him about the Quinn comment.
Mar.27 at 9:10 am
Ryne Nelson says:
@Cheryl - Yes, you do sound a bit salty…but I see where you’re coming from.
Mar.27 at 9:11 am
Ryne Nelson says:
Holly, how do you feel about your boy’s ejection? One fore T and he’s suspended.
Mar.27 at 9:11 am
WhaHuh says:
Hornets/Cavs was a good match, Big Z was clutch down the stretch. LeBron couldn’t guard Paul AT ALL, he shouldn’t try again he was too small and fast. The wolves had a suprisingly good match, Jefferson is a beast
Mar.27 at 9:13 am
Eboy says:
I’d be more hostile if he called out guys that actually played hard like Zo or Wade. Ricky has cost us the Heat about 6 games this season from his horrid play at the end of games so pulling on the jersey and playing shi*ty doesn’t make up for the fact that you are Antione Walker less 60 lbs.
Mar.27 at 9:14 am
Cheryl says:
Well, sure, Chris Quinn is no JKidd, but he Shaq was usually sitting when Quinn got his two minutes of playing time anyway. And even so, keep that sh*t to yourself, no need to call the kid out in the press.
Mar.27 at 9:15 am
Eboy says:
Well, I’ve been calling him out all season here and I don’t feel bad.
Mar.27 at 9:17 am
Cheryl says:
yeah, because you could probably replace him on the squad and do better. you’ve got an excuse. Shaq doesn’t.
Mar.27 at 9:17 am
Eboy says:
Quinn’s not much worse than Kidd at the moment.
Mar.27 at 9:20 am
TADOne says:
Please tell me how you really feel Cheryl. Stop beating around the damn bush, ok!
Mar.27 at 9:20 am
Eboy says:
Well, that’s kind of funny, but no, it falls on Riley that the Heat have to rely on Quinn for point guard play and then have Ricky as our starting small forward. That falls on Riley only. If anyone around the league says they’d love either one as their starter at either postion, they must be retarded or employed by the Knicks.

Riley’s to blame for the Heat’s sh*t season solely. We should be talking about this in Mutoni’s post, Cheryl, so Holly doesn’t lose her mind.
Mar.27 at 9:23 am
TADOne says:
Did anyone see the end of the Cavs/Hornets game? Classic ending for two worthy MVP candidates. That LeBron drive and left handed layup was awesone, but when Paul got the inbound, slow dribbled tgo freeze the defender, drove the lane hard and attracted 3 defenders, and then the perfect flip back pass to West for the winning 18 footer was incredible. I jumped out of my damn seat and hollered on that one. Great game, spectacular ending.
Mar.27 at 9:23 am
Holly MacKenzie says:
Shaq just needs to shut up and play ball in Phoenix. I’m with Cheryl on this one. Kobe needs to do the same thing in LA. No more techs, please.
Mar.27 at 9:24 am
Eboy says:
Holly,, can you blame Kobe for being mad.? They were struggling against the Bobcats at home? That sucks.
Mar.27 at 9:24 am

Tricky Ricky and Frat Boy Quinn can do whatever. THE BIG CACTUS!!!!! Bobcats are victouris!!!!
Mar.27 at 9:25 am

sorry bet, if you read you’d know I fell asleep and missed all of the action. Your boys showed up and we disrespected you guys by not being ready. Loss deserved. Lessons to be learned before the playoffs hit, that is for sure. And, bet, your boys always seem to kill us.

Paul.WOW. Celtics. WOW. Shouldn’t Scola be considered for ROY? after all he’s doing about the same as Horford on a much more relevant team playing in the West. And yes I know the hype/stats of Durant will probably win him the award, but he really shouldn’t get it.

Mar.27 at 9:34 am
Holly MacKenzie says:
Scola was nice last night. Impressed me. Suns need to calm down. Seriously, they are going to kill themselves this offseason with their hot tempers and techs at the wrong time if they don’t learn to cool their jets now. Paul….is…..amazing. He kills me. Peja killed the Cavs as well with his 6 three-pointers.
Mar.27 at 9:35 am
Ryne Nelson says:
(over Navarro and Moon)
Scola is, without doubt, this League’s best 27-year-old rookie.

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Holly has a bias BET, Lakers lost and Kobe crapped his pants therefore no mention. Did you guys/gals see how Rondo made Nash look like Montgomery Burns with that hestitation move? Rajon is really turning into a player these days.

TADOne says:
Paul forged ahread in the MVP race in my book last night. Kobe didn’t just kick the ball, he was riding the ref all night, and theref just got sick of the verbal abuse. I don’t blame him. Kobe better start doing some meditation with Phil before he gets his 16th.
Mar.27 at 9:38 am
Holly MacKenzie says:
hhaha, I’m cool, Eboy. Thanks though. A fitful night’s sleep just left me wonky this morning. I turn on the tv and see KB’s ejection plus the score…and thought I was still dreaming. Being sick just sucks. You know this, though! Hope you are feeling better.
Mar.27 at 9:39 am
TADOne says:
Speaking of crapping the bed, my Pistons did exactly that last night. If it wasn’t for Stuckey going off in the 4th, it would have been much worse.
Mar.27 at 9:39 am
Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Just joking Holly, respect you dozing of (it was about time). Was just looking for a way to get the Kobe line incorporated hehe..
And who cares if Scola is 27 (Oden would have been 37 if he had played) he’s still an NBA rookie right..
Mar.27 at 9:40 am
Eboy says:
Thanks, Holly. Same to you. FINALLY coming around. Everyone down here seems to have the same virus. Sucks worse than the Heat and that’s bad-bad.
Mar.27 at 9:40 am
TADOne says:
I’m fretting the Heat tonight because this is exactly the type of game the Pistons never show up for. I expect either a Pistons blow out or a 83-79 loss. Neither would surprise me.
Mar.27 at 9:42 am
Eboy says:
TAD, they have that scary cycle of playing great against good teams and mediocre against less than stellar ones. They better get straight NOW because Boston seems to be getting ready TODAY.

Calderon on the Heat would be interesting, I think it would benefit Wade to play with a real point guard; easier shots would keep him from spending half the season sprawled out on the floor. But could it happen?

Mar.27 at 10:18 am
Holly MacKenzie says:
Bet… you killed me with that one. Calderon’s got more going on than Brevin. 53% 45% 92% 4.91 assist/turnover ratio. That’s nice.

Holly, that is this year. Remeber those first few years with Bobcats, Brevin Knight was averaging like 7-8 assist per game. Why we let him go i do not know, the Nuggets or Knicks really could have used him, he PASSES and doesnt SHOOT. Same with Jose

THE NBA EUROPE LIVE 2009 plans annonuced. Here it is, from SI.com: By Ian Thomsen, SI.com NEW YORK — Four NBA teams will be playing preseason games in Europe next October as part of NBA Europe Live 2008, commissioner David Stern will announce Thursday. The series will begin with the New Jersey Nets meeting the Miami Heat on Oct. 9 in Paris and Oct. 12 in London. The Washington Wizards will then play the New Orleans Hornets on Oct. 14 in Berlin and Oct. 17 in Barcelona. Next season’s exhibitions will have increased relevance following Stern’s recent declaration that he is hoping to launch a European division of five NBA expansion teams over the next decade. The leading candidates for franchises are London and Berlin, because they are the only two European cities currently with arenas built to NBA specifications. “Our third consecutive year of NBA Europe Live is another step in our ongoing effort to bring the excitement of the NBA to our growing fan base,” says Stern. The NBA continues to make these overseas visits in partnership with the Euroleague. Jordi Bertomeu, CEO of the Euroleague, insists that he does not see plans for NBA expansion as a threat. “Euroleague Basketball is always seeking to participate and help in making the sport of basketball grow across the globe and, for the third consecutive year, we are happy to be participating and making the bridges between Europe and the USA stronger,” says Bertomeu. “The NBA Europe Live program offers fans the possibility of watching great basketball, and is one in a series of ideas that can bring basketball to the forefront of world sports.”

Russ Bengtson says:
BET: Chris Paul has about as much of a chance at being the next Oscar Robertson as you do. The Big O averaged 25.5, 9.5 and 7.5 for his career, and 30.3, 10.6 and 10.4 combined over his first FIVE seasons. I know you need to post 56,972,089 times a day to fill your quota, but think before you type sometimes.

TADOne says:
Zeke was the best comparison, but Chris Paul will soon be his own player, uncomparable.
Mar.27 at 10:58 am
Eboy says:
I’d hate to imagine how great CP3 would be with an incredible 2 or 3 that could finish at the rim and spead the floor even more for him.
Mar.27 at 10:59 am
TADOne says:
Um, Peja?
Mar.27 at 11:00 am
Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Agree that Zeke is a good comparison, but what about KJ in his prime. 20+ points 10+ assists, loads of steals, fast, strong, aggresive, leader, could throw down on bigs - don’t remember Zeke ever doing that (I might be wrong).
Mar.27 at 11:01 am
Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Forgot; good defense, suspect three point shot,
Mar.27 at 11:03 am
Eboy says:
That’s funny, TAD. I was thinking more of a finisher not a jump shooter.
Mar.27 at 11:03 am
TADOne says:
Isiah could dunk, he just chose not to. KJ was good, but if you just watch Zeke’s ballhandling and Paul’s, you can see the comparisons with the hesitation and dribble drives.
Mar.27 at 11:05 am
TADOne says:
Well, you said finish at the rim AND also spread the floor. Peja definitely spreads the floor, and he is a decent finisher. But I could definitely see JR Smith as the 2 on this team, but Byron would probably never take him back.
Mar.27 at 11:10 am
Eboy says:
What about someone like a Gerald Wallace?
Mar.27 at 11:11 am
TADOne says:
As a 2?
Mar.27 at 11:13 am
Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Agree on the dribbling skills TAD, KJ was more just pure explosion/quickness. Still think Paul can be compared to either one. But as you said very soon he’ll be uncomparable. Paul needs a flying wing player no doubt about it. He throws the alley with such ease, currently Chandler and West (maybe Bonzi to a lesser extent) are on the receiving end. But if he had a flyer on either the 2 or 3 they would even more complete.

Mar.27 at 11:21 am
TADOne says:
Anyway, Gerald Wallace would do very well with the Hornets. As LZ said, someone like Wallace could run the wing and catch alley oops all day from Paul. He still has no jumper, but hey…

Sixers are straight beasting on fools. Lou Williams was huge last night. Andre Miller must be having a ball with these young kids. I went to the game last nite…don’t ask me why, but it was fun again at the Wac. These kids should be representing us in the preseason next year before the damn Nets. Sammy actually looks interested in basketball for a change.

illy: I may actually be getting to Philly for a game before the season ends. I have to come up that way and I hope they are still playing great and the Wachovia Center is rocking. It will be even better if they draw Detroit in the first round.
