Team Leaving; Sonic Legacy to Remain in Seattle
There’s not a whole lot to be happy about if you’re a supporter of the Seattle Sonics these days. Not only is the team awful, but they’re on their way out of town. But if there’s one thing Sonics fans can hang their hat on, it is this: After the move to OKC, everything about the team (except, uh, the actual team) will remain in Seattle.
During a breakfast meeting for team sponsors Friday at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel in Southern California, Bennett said he plans to influence the city to accept a buyout. He also told several sponsors that he wants to negotiate a settlement in which the city retains nearly everything associated with the Sonics except the players and coaches.
Forty years of history: Down the drain! Jesus, that’s depressing.
The Seattle die-hards, meanwhile, are still protesting and politely drowning their sorrows in pitchers of beer. As the old saying goes: If you’re going to lose, might as well go down … drinking.

I don’t think the NBA has a racist Native American-related team name yet… about time they got with the program.

I’m actually happy that the name is not leaving with the team. I hope the trend sticks. Really feel crappy for Seattle though. Hang in there the Great Northwet.

Wasn’t it a forgone conclusion that they kept the history of the team while they were in Seattle?

Why don’t they just start an OKC expansion team? Why take the Supersonics from Seattle?

The last thing the NBA needs is another expansion team named after some random animal.

5 years after they get the new Sonics (if thats the plan) it won’t matter… the Ravens did the Same thing to us in Cleveland, and now it doesnt even seem like a different team…its all perspective.

What happens to the divisions? Do they remain in the Northwest? They’re basically as south as Memphis, But I guess they will stay for number purposes.

I don’t know, I have no emotions over the Sonics’ departure whatsoever. It’s been such a foregone conclusion that this franchise was no longer relevant. I don’t know all the details about ownership, fan response, etc. - but I stopped caring when the Kemp and Payton era passed. Now THAT was Sonics basketball. Seattle isn’t losing Sonic basketball now; they lost that long ago. They’re just losing some basketball team, and frankly, I don’t care.

Okay whos going to make it to the playoffs first…an “oklahoma outfit” that basically struggled in Seattle (which in all fairness is weaker than an expansion team roster..) or a revamped Sonics team that gets to pick from a deep draft class and a solid bunch of unrestricted free agents in 2009? PLUS THEY GET TO KEEP THEIR LOGO AND UNI’S ANYWAY..?? Heh… as soon as this goes through I am going to start following the Sonics again.

The NBA should FORCE Bennett to take the name and logo and uniforms just so he’s reminded EVERY DAY that he stole another city’s franchise. Too bad his BFF Stern will never hold him to that. FIRE STERN.

I went to my first Sonics game this year, the arena sucked, it cost 8 bucks for two bottles of water, and the dancers all looked like rejects from a Jane Fonda work out video. Not to mention they were playing the Lakers and the place was half packed. It’s going to suck now since I live in BC and the closest team is portland. Now I can’t bank on the other team winning when I go… damn you Seattle…. damn you.
