Mark Cuban Hates Bloggers, Is a Blogger Himself
Mark Cuban - billionaire team owner, dancer, and blogger - has instituted a curious policy inside the Dallas Mavericks’ locker room: No stinkin’ bloggers allowed!
Furthermore, if a blog writer is coming to cover a game, the publication must inform the Mavericks PR staff they are sending a blogger. In order to enforce this policy, we must know this information.
Unfortunately, there isn’t enough room to allow any and all bloggers in the locker room. There also are no standards that I have been able to come up with that differentiate between bloggers to the point where I should or should not credential one versus the other. My experience in reading blogs has favored bloggers not affiliated with major media companies, but that could be my unique bias.
This apparently stems from a negative post from Tim MacMahon, a writer for the Dallas Morning News. And according to the paper, he’s the only one affected by this ban since he was the sole blogger with regular access to the Dallas locker room.
Of course this isn’t the first time Cuban has had a beef with a sports blogger who had the audacity to be critical of him or his beloved Mavs. The NBA says they’re looking into the matter, and the newspaper has filed an official protest.
So, um, if we are to take this ban to its (illogical) extreme, does this mean that Cubes the blogger is no longer allowed to walk around the Mavs locker room either?

That would be amazing if he, by implication, banned himself too.

Mark Cuban is a tool. I can’t even imagine him with an adult haircut…. which is a thought I’ve never had about a grown man.

That’s how you get rich. Ban competition. That’s also how you publicly embarass yourself. Wouldn’t it be fun if Cuban’s parents or his nanny kinda stopped by and took away his toys?
“No Mark! That’s enough playing with the Mavericks! Be a good boy now and mommy will take you to the Dairy Queen.”

Not all blogger’s are as scrupulous as you Marcel, so it does make some sense. Generally someone writing a blog can avoid the kind of liable charges that a newspaper could be hit with. A blog can post something false, and then other media outlets can pick it up with the header “douchebag’s blog is reporting…” I’m not saying it’s a good move by Cuban, but there is some validity.

gumdrop, i get where you’re coming from. but this ban came as a result of the blogger/reporter linking to a ‘Fire Avery’ website, whose stance he didn’t even really agree with! cuban is being stupidly reactionary, and just flat-out wrong here.

Perhaps he should find a link to a blogger that can cure male pattern baldness and another that has a surefire cure for Frankenstein forehead.

i actually agree with the point he makes though, blogs have far fewer standards with regards to accuracy.. maybe he is indeed waging war on bloggers out of a personal disdain, but the point he makes is more than valid..

Kevin says:
just look at the blog entries you guys write with sensationalist and often-misleading subject lines..

Kevin loses points for being a Keane fan, but he earns them back for the very salient point he raises. I love me the internets, and certainly the blogosphere has added a great deal to sports coverage and everything else coverage, too. The problem, as Kevin points out, is that conventional media have a (admittedly flawed) system of checks and balances that makes it difficult to make stuff up or slander people or whatever, at least not without consequence. Bloggers don’t really.
Then again, this guy apparently blogs for a newspaper, right? So, um, nevermind. Cuban’s still my favorite owner, though, if only by default.

Also, I guess the continued existence/employment of Peter Vecsey by a major daily newspaper further disproves me point. Viper and I used to be neighbors, so it’s all love, but still.

At first, I thought this made reasonable sense: Not ALL bloggers deserve to be invited in a locker room. Then I read he’s just using it to ban people he doesn’t like. Oh, Mark!

Tim MacMahon is probably the best Mavs beat writer. He gives good insight into the Mavs locker room and his work is always on point. I dont like the move, but as long as the Mark Cuban TV show doesn’t come back.

Mark Cuban is banned from YaySports!NBA at YAYsports! NBA says:
[…] For those unaware, curious, or surprised as to the hostility towards one of the NBA’s most charasmatic owners, the banning of Mark Cuban and the Mavericks is in response to Mr. Cuban’s preposterous “banning” of bloggers from the Dallas Mavericks locker room. Until such time as Mr. Cuban decides to re-grant bloggers access, this site will not recognize him or his team as members of the basketball community. […]
