LeBron ‘Supermans Dat’ DeShawn

by Marcel Mutoni

You just knew that it was only a matter of time before reporters wrangled a reaction out of LeBron James following DeShawn Stevenson’s diss last week.

Naturally, James compared himself to Jay-Z - Dude, we get it already: You’re friends with the guy. It’s been noted - and referred to Stevenson as someone who I’m not entirely sure should even be considered a musician to begin with:

James said: “With DeShawn Stevenson, it’s kind of funny. It’s almost like Jay-Z [responding to a negative comment] made by Soulja Boy. It doesn’t make sense.”

Ouch.

Getting (metaphorically) dismissed as nothing more than a kid whose entire musical career will most likely only be remembered for one mindless hit and a taste for funny-looking sunglasses has got to sting.

I can only hope that this leads to some kind of freestyle battle on 106&Park to settle the beef once and for all.

Leave it to Lebron to crush the dudes hopes at being self important with a rapper compartison. Fantastic.

or a plain old comparison.

Irishpaul says:
Im guessing that’s DeShawns self-esteem in the toilet… I also find it quite aggravating that Lebron can constantly refer to himself in such elevated terms, as if his greatness is preordained, and have virtually no mass backlash against him. Yet when Kobe made similar statements in the past he was slaughtered as if he represented the arrogant antithesis of what a “real” athlete should do.I have no problem with athletes with justifiable ego’s, but i do have a problem with hypocrisy.

uamini says:
I still expect up LeBron to end up as the NBA version of the Williams Sisters…superior talent, a chance to become the best ever but in the end someone who’ll have focused too much on off-court business activities to fully live up to his potential…
And last time I checked Jay-Z actually owned a couple of rings ^^

Mar.17 at 9:43 am

riggs says:
ouch, that hurt me and im not even named deshawn

Mar.17 at 9:45 am

Eric says:
The Williams sisters comparison is silly. They play an individual sport. If Lebron doesn’t win a ring it will because of Dan Gilbert,Danny Ferry and Mike Brown not a lack of focus.

Maybe so, but I just hate athletes (and musicians for that matter) who blatantly care more about the business side of things than about their actual job…I’ve always considered that to be disrespectful towards those loyal fans who support them
I guess Lebron is very much like Jay-Z in that way…

He’s a great player, no doubt…but so far he hasn’t won anything which makes the Jay-Z comparison pretty ridiculous

Didn’t he win all-star MVP twice, and isn’t he an eastern conference champion, uamini? I mean, it ain’t the NBA championships but give the guy a break. It’s not like he’s accomplished nothing.

Mar.17 at 10:16 am

Irishpaul says:
He cares about basketball. Just not as much as he cares about supplanting MJ as the world’s most recognized basketball face and brand the world has seen. Oh and pulling up his bank balance and seeing a billion dollars gleaming back.

I don’t care about All-Star MVPs, but yeah, being the Eastern Conference champion is not bad (with all the powerhouses you have to beat along the way…ahem)…
It’s just that we’re talking about a guy who willingly lets himself call the Chosen One, King James or whatever…shouldn’t he have a couple more things on his resume than impressive individual stats?
I guess I’m too much of an idealist to expect a little bit of humility from a guy who has yet to prove he can carry his team all the way…

Lebron is like four or five years into his career. I’d say that as this point he’s done enough to earn all the nicknames people have given him. Simply put, would anybody on this board be willing to bet a large sum of money that Lebron won’t reign as the best player in the league for most of the next ten years?

Mar.17 at 10:55 am

Jukai says:
uamini… he’s arguably the best player in the NBA right now (or second best, to prevent Kobe fans from jumping on me). Rings aside, why should we NOT call him the Choosen One or King James? He is the most complete player since Magic Johnson but with three times the offensive power. Even if he NEVER reaches his potential and chooses to focus solely on being a global icon, he still may be a top ten legend. We get it, you don’t like the self righteousness… but really, enough with the whole “he’s still got something to prove” deal. If he really wants a ring, he can opt out and join any half-decent team and bring a championship to it. For now though, this is Lebron “cash cow” James, and damnitall, I say let him run his businesses.

uamini, you’re right about them not contending for a ring, without Yao its going to be damn near impossible for them to beat 3 playoff teams in the west, BUT, they can definitely get hot/confident for one series and knock off a serious contender, so thats what should be looked out for.

Eric says:
You don’t have to better than someone to criticize, but you do have to be good at the topic that you popping off at the mouth about. Stevenson is a bottom feeder with R-Kelly like tendencies. If Lebron is overrated, then Stevenson doesn’t even belong in the league. If I remember correctly, coming out of high-school Deshawn tried his best to be the “chosen one”. The only way Deshawn’s accessment is accurate is if you compare lebron to perfection. That says more about Lebron’s critics and what they really think of his potential/talent. In order to make him look less than amazing player, they have set up an impossible standard for him to reach.

Leave it to an overrated player to compare himself to an overrated rapper. Jay-Z? If James had said Nas, or if he took it a little more old school and said Rakim or Grandmaster Flash, then we would be talking. But Jay-Z? Until Lebron starts playing decent defense, can overcome hard fouls, and does not rely on his blatant traveling (that were so obvious the league changed the freaking rules to allow his crazy power hops), he is nowhere near the best player in the league. Also, the fact that D-Steazy got into Lebron’s head to the point that King Travelier hoisted up a three rather than drive and get the garaunteed call at the end of the Wizards game proves that Lebron does not have the mental toughness to take his team to a championship. That and the nail-biting. And the whining. And the pouting. And getting swept in the Finals…

John E. Sanford says:
Just as Deshawn’s comment was much ado about nothing, so was Lebron’s. Who gives really gives two sh*ts? Lebron had a witty comeback, great. How this relates to him being more concerned about his life outside of basketball? Again who cares, this a ridiculous comparison as well. Dude is arguably the best player in the game at 23!!! He is only going to get better.

TADOne says:
I thoroughly enjoyed that quote.

Mar.17 at 2:56 pm

The Biz says:
Winslowalrob name three players better than LBJ right since he’s not even close to the best player in the league. I do agree that his defense is pretty bad and his freethrows need to improve but to say he is overrated is getting a little carried away

Son of Shawn says:
Deshawn: 03-abr-1981; Years Pro: 7
PPG: 11,0; RPG: 3,00; APG: 3,2 Lebron: 30-dic-1984; Years Pro: 4
PPG: 30,9; RPG: 8,10; APG: 7,5 Yes Deshawn, Lebron is overrated but lookin above and aplying you your own standars maybe you you aren“t even a basketball player:
1/3 PPG; 2/3 RPG; LESS THAN 1/2 APG, (not talkinĀ“ bout who gets more defense attention) so… shut up and play better!!!

Winslowalrob says:
A) I am a MASSIVE hater of Lebron, I freely admit it. Lebron is good, but he is nowhere near MJ or a post-MJ player.
B) Define “better”. For the sake of argument, I will say “player to build a franchise around”, at which point I have a tie between Kobe and Duncan at one and two, and Nash for third. Put any of those players in the East, especially the modern Cavs, and they will be fantasy gods. Like Kobe said…

RV says:
the thing about lebron is how young he is. He IS overrated in a way, but only because people act like the expectations are certain to come true. As if he’s a lock to get the all time scoring record or to win numerous rings. If he were 32 right now he wouldn’t be hyped up as much, using Winslowalrob’s criteria, people should pick lebron because who wouldn’t want to build a franchise around a kid who’s that good, so young? Nash may be more efficient and better with teammates, but he also didn’t become MVP-good until he was in his 30s. So if both guys play at an MVP level, do you want to build around a 30 yr old point or a 21-ish guard/forward?

Wait, Lebron isn’t 30 years old?

He aint Jordan and never will be…in fact,he aint even Kobe…there are players in the league right now that i would take over him…personally i think Melo is better…he can outshoot him any day of the week…so can a lot of other people so i guess that aint sayin much…

At least Lebron’s the best player on his team… can’t say that about Melo.

I think its interesting that Lebron is a new kind of basketball athlete. Stronger, faster, more athletic. If someone told me that Lebron was on HGH I would not be surprised. Anyone notice how much muscle he put on between his sophomore and junior year in high school?

Mar.17 at 10:28 pm

Jukai says:
Jeremy and Winslowalrob have brain damage. Severely. I had wrote a lot of counter-arguements but I’m not even going to get into it. No, he isn’t better than Jordan. But you can make an arguement that at his age, he’s almost better than everyone else.

Rapper NBA player comparison Ron Artest/The Game- Both are lost at times. dont know what the hell they are gonna do. KG/Scarface- Both been in the game for a while very consistent. Both underrated at times. Joe Johnson/Lupe Liasco- Both dont ooo and awhhh u but when u look up u are thinkin to yourself” that was hot. Man, you know you’ve made it when people devote themselves to talking NONSENSE trash about you. Hatin’ on LeBron. How can any of you say he is not one of the top 3 players in the game??? How about putting LeBron on the Lakers, with Gasol and their supporting cast. How would that turn out. Didn’t they just start winning when Kobe became more like LeBron and started being more unselfish and not shooting 30 times a game??? And if you put Kobe in the East, there is no way he goes for 31-8-8. Only LBJ, Jordan and The Big O have done that. Overrated????
BTW, not hating on Kobe. I think he’s the best player in the league. But there’s no comparin Gasol, Bynum, Odom, Farmar and Fisher with Ilgauskas, Ben Wallace, Pavlovic, Varejao and Boobie.
