Did KG Tank It In Minnesota?

by Lang Whitaker

T-Wolves owner Glen Taylor seems to think so. How do we know? He says so

“I don’t like that so much, I don’t like that,” Taylor said of the notion the Wolves tanked last season. “It was more like, I’d say, K.G. tanked it.”

Hmm. His thinking behind this seems to be that because KG sat out the last 5 games of last season, he was tanking it.

I didn’t ask Kevin about this when I interviewed him for our season preview, but he did say something that kinda stuck out to me about the T-Wolves front office possibly being disingenuous toward the fans. I asked him how much control he had over being traded from the T-Wolves, how much he could dictate where he was going.

Kevin said…

“A lot of control…well, as much as you want, because you have stuff in your contact. I’m sure the Timberwolves wanted me to be as cooperative as possible and make the transition kind of easy on both parts. I think too they was trying to get season tickets out of people, and I’m sure they was catching a little backlash off what they was hearing. I stayed in Minnesota the whole time. I didn’t go anywhere. I finally took a vacation, which was very short from what I usually take, and came back. I immediately went to L.A. and started working out.”

Hmm…

Negative press on KG? No…

Glen Taylor has some nerve, talkin sh*t about the one relevant player in the history of his sorry ass franchise.

Allenp says:
This is why I’m so glad KG doesn’t play in Minnesota anymore. So, so glad. Thank you Glen Taylor for being a horrible owner who retains one of the worst GMs in the league but continues to denigrate one of the best players in the league. Thank you Glen for being who you are.

this is the same front office who shot itself in the foot when it tried to cut an illegal deal with JOE SMITH!!!

Captain America says:
KG missed the last five games last season and the previous season. Aside from that KG played hurt many times and logged a ton of minutes for the Wolves franchise. KG is a hyper competitive star athlete who, like many of us, got sullen and moody when things weren’t going well. Do I blame him for sitting out? No. He worked his buns off the the Wolves. But the quotation from the article is somewhat out of context. Taylor was comparing two different seasons and two different rosters.

Actually being a Twolves fan, I know that Taylor and McFail think up ways to piss off the fanbase while lying awake in bed together at night.

Shouldn’t the real question be whether Glen Taylor tanked it in Minnesota?

Gerard Himself says:
classy stuff mr. Taylor.

Mar.18 at 6:24 pm

Captain America says:
Russ, we can (and have) cheap shot Taylor to death, that’s easy. But the owner has the money and sets the rules. For once, there is reason for an optimistic future for the Wolves franchise. Taylor prepared season ticket holders that this year and next are going to be tough. The real test in this latest experiment comes in 2009-10, when the only player under big dollar contract is Big Al. This also coincides with several big name free agents entering the market.

I’m gonna paraphrase Charles Barkley on this one, “Glen Taylor has a lot of money, but he don’t know a damn thing about basketball.”

Russ Bengtson says:
CA: So why, if you’re Glen Taylor, keep taking shots at the most important PERSON in the history of your organization? It doesn’t make a damn bit of sense. Lots of season ticket holders wouldn’t be season ticket holders in the first place if it wasn’t for the Big Ticket. Move on, Glen.

i completely missed the point about the KG quote. what are you trying to point out here Lang?
and to bad mouth someone who’s been loyal to you? bad form, Taylor, VERY bad form.

Mar.18 at 6:54 pm

Captain America says:
John, we will see. Glen knows what he don’t know (unlike Charles, who gets paid to run his mouth). Besides McHale, you have Fred Hoiberg, Jim Stack and Randy Wittman. Fred has been doing much of the talent scouting here and abroad.

Mar.18 at 7:01 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Mind you, I’m not saying that KG didn’t tank, I’m just saying it’s bad form for an owner to call out the best player in franchise history, especially one as well-liked (and respected) by other players as KG. Bad PR move.

Mar.18 at 7:03 pm

Captain America says:
Russ, taking the quote out of context and it doesn’t make any sense. If the original article read “Taylor Disses KG” than perhaps it would. But the article is about the differences in how this year’s team is finishing the season with an interest in winning the remaining games. Taylor’s point is that the intention in prior seasons was not to lose as many games towards the end (like the Heat this season) in order to get more ping pong balls but that winning to the end became a mute point since KG opted to sit the final games out. Like I said, I don’t blame KG and I don’t think Taylor is dissing KG as such. But no one can doubt the impact of KG sitting out the final games had on the outcome. As an aside, I’m amazed at the halo effect bestowed on KG. He is human, he just plays a superhero on the court.

Glen Taylor is a P.O.S. I’ve never heard a more dishonest and self-serving comment in my life. To publicly accuse and try to hurt KG’s solid reputation after all the years of service KG put into the Timberwolves is disgusting. KG was the consummate professional. Don’t blame him when you couldn’t put the right guys around him. Now that KG has moved on into a new and better organized environment, look what’s happened. The Celtics, being the worst NBA team last year, is now the best. Thankfully, everyone knows Taylor is F.O.S.

i’m not agreeing with taylor, but i do agree that garnett is overrated. *pause waiting for the world to explode* kg’s making easily 10M a year on just endorsements. did he really need another 20-25M while crippling the franchise? it’s nearly impossible to convince free agents to come to minnesota. what am i trying to say? kg should have taken a pay cut and ownership should have been smarter and not overpay for scrubs like wally, troy hudson, marco jaric, et al.

KG should have taken a pay cut so McHale could get more useless players

Random note: can I please get credit for coining the term “Superblogger”? I just thought of this. There used to be just models, like how there are just bloggers now. But there became so many models that people had to differentiate the girl who was in the Target weekend ad and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model. The term “supermodel” was born. And now with tons of bloggers on the web, and Mark Cuban waging war on bloggers, I believe we need a new term. And that word is : SUPERBLOGGERS. Example: Henry Abbott is the like Janice Dickinson of bloggers. He is the first true SUPERBLOGGER.

Allenp says:
I thought KG sat out with an injury? Why would he play through pain for a team that was going nowhere? I will be interested to see how free agents react to Glen Taylor’s comments about KG who put up with a lot of failure by his front office during his tenure as a Timberwolf. No, KG is not perfect, but his front office wasn’t even adequate.

Mar.19 at 11:32 am

Allenp says:
DMA, KG’s contract did not criple the franchise. That’s a lie. The Wolves had more than enought money to take on the long term deal of Marko Jaric, resign Troy Hudson and Trenton Hassell to big contract and also give Mark Madsen millions of dollars. Don’t mention the massive deal they gave to Wally World. The fact is, the Wolves sucked at talent evaluation for most of McHale’s career. Instead of resigning Chauncey, they let him walk becuase he was too expensive and brought Terrell Brandon and his questionable knee. The refused to extend Sam Cassell and Spreewell at the contracts they wanted, but instead took on the long term deal of Jaric! The problem wasn’t a lack of money, but in how that money was spent.
