Billy King Praises Himself for Sixers’ Good Run

by Marcel Mutoni

Failed coaches and executives have a fascinating tendency to praise the work they did - work, which mind you, led to them being fired by the organization in the first place - when a place they left in shambles gets its act together.

Case in point: Billy King, who you might recognize from his role in the harrowing film “Worst GM’s of the Modern Era” (It’s in the horror section at your local video store.) King says he should get some credit for the Sixers’ wholly surprising run at a Playoff spot.

“I asked Maurice (Cheeks) how he wanted to play and he wanted to be an up-tempo team,” King said by telephone. “And they’ve won by running. I hope people will look at it and think that I did a good job. And they are in good financial position as well.”

Sure, Billy. This is exactly how you drew it up.

The linked article goes on to mention that King is a possible candidate for the Isiah Thomas’s job in New York. I can’t even begin to tell you how happy this would make me. For hilarity’s sake, both guys should be put in charge of the franchise just to see how bad things could get.

Billy looks on while Isaiah is teeing up; 18 holes, lunch, mandatory lap-dance, two NBA masterminds planning the next dynasty - it’s good to be the King.

I think Billy King should apply to be the Fed Reserve Chairman. Could you imagine what would happen and the hilarity that would ensue? Can we make this idea a TV show?

He should ask for an extension even though he’s already been fired.

Dre's on point says:
Forget Billy King, I agree with “Boing Dynasty” i’m still trying to see what is so great about the 76ers run into the playoffs…they are still a sub .500 team and technically still a losing team. There is nothing spactacular about making the playoffs being below or a few games over .500 in the Eastern conference. Sad, but TRUE.

Mar.17 at 4:32 pm

Dennis Castro says:
Um, the thing that’s so great is that many “experts”, and I use that term loosely, picked this Sixers team to be dead last in the conference, yet showing heart that a lot of teams don’t have, the fact that they’re even in the playoff hunt is a feat itself.

Allenp says:
Billy was a bum, but, he did see something in Dalembert that I had no idea existed. I will give him credit for that and Thaddeus Young. He also drafted Louis Williams and Willie Green. Wait, hold on, I can’t defend Billy King. Just forget everything I just wrote.

15-4 since Feb 5. 2nd best in the league behind that Houston blaze.

Russ Bengtson says:
Billy King did a better job with the Sixers than Isiah has done with the Knicks. They’re in much better shape moving forward. He’s drafted well, there’s no gigantic untradeable contracts, Mo Cheeks is a terrific coach. They still need a No. 1 option to be true contenders, but they’ll still probably finish over .500 this year. Not bad.

Mar.17 at 6:09 pm

Jukai says:
Wasn’t Iverson “moved” because he asked for a running team? What the hell is this?

Mar.17 at 6:51 pm

what says:
Isiah’s time with the Knicks looks worse because he’s in NYC and the media covers it more than it deserves. But if you break down his actual basketball moves the team has more talent than it did when he got there. Sure, none of the talent meshes together, but at least there’s talent there, and he’s actually not done that bad of a job drafting. You can’t say the same for Billy King or Kevin McHale. To me those two are far worse than Isiah, and if they were allowed to spend unlimited amounts of money their teams would look much worse.

Dre's on point says:
“Dennis Castro”…nobody cares. Like I said, the Sixers will more then likely be a sub .500 team (or a few games over .500) in the playoffs, just to be first round fodder and swept by the Celtics or the Pistons. Again, being a sub .500 team in the EASTERN conference is nothing to call home about. That team has a long way to go before they are even remotely relevent again. Also, as a fan of B-Ball in general, I do not like the way that organization handeled the Iverson trade, just hella disrespectful. I can’t imagine any “star” player wanting to willingly go and play there after watching the way they handled things with Iverson….wasted five good years of the dudes career.

Mar.17 at 11:41 pm

TC says:
Say whatever u want about the AI trade, but at least the Sixers are going to the playoff this year. AI hasn’t made his teammates better since….2001.

what?, the team is below ,500; that´s a “good run”?, ok that´s a spot in the East and a 1st round 4-0 (Boston or Detroit) that nobody is gonna pay to watch on ppv, so he clearly deserves a GM award!!!, this is ridiculous, put Sacramento in the East and they have a spot too, and let´s see what´s with Iggy in the postseason

Allenp says:
Y’all know I couldn’t let TC’s comments slide. I’m wondering how the fact that the Nuggets have one of their best team records EVER is proof that Iverson doesn’t make his teammates better. Just doens’t make sense to me. But then, I usually try to make arguments based in logic.

Mar.18 at 2:21 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
the nuggets problems are melo and g. karls fault.

Mar.18 at 4:54 pm

Dre's on point says:
I couldn’t let TC’s comments slide either. LOL!! You’re right, its Iversons fault for everything. That organization had all the proper teammates around him to succeed *sarcasm*. Please don’t talk stupid, thats all Iverson did on his teams in Philly was make those below average NBA teammates better. If it wasn’t for that guy, half of those other teammates would not have gotten the contracts they did get. So get out of here with that BS. And LOL at you people making a bigger deal about the Sixers going to the playoffs with a sub .500 record. You people are ridiculous. smh

Mar.18 at 4:59 pm

Dre's on point says:
^^ All below average, except for Iggy…I like Iggy. LOL!! Anyhow, the fans are still delusional if they think the Sixers are going anywhere anytime soon except for an early exit out the playoffs. Bitter fans just reaching for anything to try to throw in Iversons face. pathetic.

Mar.18 at 5:22 pm

Allenp says:
If Khalid was being serious, then I tend to agree with him.

Mar.18 at 6:13 pm

Dre's on point says:
If Khalid was serious, I only agree about Coach Karl and the fact that the Nuggets have had mad injuries to key players this season, even with that they are still like 15 games over .500… the West is staked this year and there is only like 4 1/2 games seperating seeds 1-9 (people act as if they don’t understand or recognise that) so everyone is in danger of not making the playoffs. If anyone in that conference loses a few games in a row they will drop down the rankings and possibly out the playoff picture. Its not a game. So EVERYONE needs to be on their A-game. But yeah, unfortounatly Coach Karl might have to go, because his style seems not to be fitting with this team. I feel like they have won games off of their talent alone. Coach Karl is a good Coach…but i’m afraid just not the right Coach anymore for that team.
